This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested either the Ultrasun Family SPF30 or the Ultrasun Extreme SPF50+. This test was open to all UK MNers who have at least one child.

Here’s what Ultrasun have to say: “Swiss professional sun care brand Ultrasun offers super sensitive broad spectrum sun protection from harmful UVA, UVB & Infrared A rays. Advanced lamellar technology gives long-lasting, fast absorbing and lightweight formulas. All products are hypoallergenic with no emulsifiers, perfume or parabens, reducing the risk of allergy. Babies and children can be prone to heat rashes during hot or humid weather because their sweat glands are not fully developed. Ultrasun’s products help to prevent prickly heat making them especially suitable for children and those with very sensitive skin. The easy to use products are, non-greasy, non-sticky and water resistant meaning applying sun cream to wriggling little ones is less challenging and teenagers are protected without constant reminders to reapply.”

Testers please answer the following questions:
- Who did you try the sun cream on?
- How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?
- Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?
- What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
- Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Selected testers will be required to test out the product until the beginning June whenever possible and then leave feedback on a thread on Mumsnet as well as filling in a short survey. Testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher each of their choice (from a list).

Who did you try the sun cream on?
Me, my partner and my 21 month old son.
How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?
We went out all day and applied in the morning, at lunch and then again around 3pm. I was a bit over cautious I think but it lasted all day and none of us even slightly tanned even though it was an extremely sunny day.
Did you find the product easy to apply?
I thought it went on really easily to me and my son, DP has eczema so it needed rubbing in a little more on those patches but didn't sting like a lot of suncream does.
Was the process fuss free?
Is applying suncream to a toddler ever fuss free? 😂 It was as easy as it could have been and because it sank in easily I wasn't wrestling with a slippery child. Easy to apply to myself too!
What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
That it's UVA and UVB protecting. I always go for high factors, it's just not worth the risk.
Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
I definitely would, I'd go for the 'extreme' for my son as he's very pale skinned. It didn't hurt or irritate my partner's eczema either so that's the big reason we'd buy it again!

Overall I actually loved this for my family, I recommended it on another thread to a mumsnetter. It is expensive for us but as it's the only one we've found DP can use we'll stock up when it's on offer.

I tried the suncream on myself and two children who are 4 and 1. I was very confident in this brand as I have heard good things. It was easy to apply although the bottle was different to what I would normally use and wasn’t too comfortable to squeeze. I would definintely buy this though.

  • Who did you try the sun cream on? myself and dd
  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child? apprehensive at first and did reapply a lot, but did not need to apply so often.
  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free? very easy to apply thanks to the wide bottle and easy pump, which gives you a decent amount to apply to a wriggly baby. I used the 50+ on her, it soaked in quickly and did not leave any marks.
  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product? mostly that it actually protects against all sun damage, i burn easily and I expect dd would too. I also look for easy application, cruelty free and quick to soak in - hard to find in high spf. Oh and water proof!
  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? yes, it's expensive but worth it in my opinion. Plus not having to apply often means it lasts longer, and 24 month life once opened would hopefully mean no waste!

  • Who did you try the sun cream on?

SPF30 on myself and the SPF50 on my 2 children, 3 and 6 months whilst on holiday abroad.
  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

Very confident as I was aware it is a premium brand with a good reputation. I liked the application tips inside
  • Did you find the product easy to apply?

Very easy to apply. I liked the wide pump and the cream, even the SPF50 glided on and absorbed quickly without leaving a white sticky film.
Was the process fuss free?
Yes, especially as the SPF50 went on so quickly so great for the children
  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

5 star protection, doesn’t aggravate eczema/prickly heat, absorbs well. I was also pleased it was ocean friendly.
  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes, as despite the 30C heat and being in and out the pool all day I didn’t burn at all. I will definitely be buying the SPF50 for the children again.

  • Who did you try the sun cream on?

I used it on myself and my children (age 4 and 2)
  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

It seemed to work for a number of hours and it was easy to feel what parts had been covered.
  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

It was easy for me to apply on myself and my children. My 4 year old finds sprays easier to apply herself so I applied in the morning and sent a spray to school with her.
  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

High SPF, nice smelling and doesn't bring children out in a rash.
  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes. My children didn't come out in a rash and it smelled nice. Good sun protection.

-Who did you try the sun cream on?
Myself, DH and 6 month old DD.
-How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?
Very confident- I have very sensitive skin but tan easily, so used the 30spf, DH is very pale so used the 50spf, and sensitive skinned DD used the 50spf - we were all well protected during our holiday in Greece.
-Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?
The plunger style bottles made the cream easy to apply and mess free, but the 50spf was quite sticky for a while after application.
-What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
Effective protection and suitable for sensitive skin.
-Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
Yes - most suncreams cause a reaction on mine and DD's eczema prone skin, but we had no problems with these!

-Who did you try the sun cream on?

Myself, baby and 4 year old

-How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

I assumed that something given to test by mumsnet would perform as stated, so did not reapply on a day out that was alternately sunny and cloudy. Other times ised were for shorter times.

-Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

Factor 30 was fine on me. For the kids I prefer a spray or roll on one as they don't do still for a moment. Neither were greasy and the 30 absorbed well. The factor 50 was sticky and left white streaks even after a lot of rubbish in.

-What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

Protection from burning and less visible harm. Natural products are always preferred, but need to do as good a job.

-Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
Only the factor 30. Found the 50 too difficult to use. Even then only for me, not kids, unless a spray or roll one is brought out.

  • Who did you try the sun cream on? Myself, my husband, my 3yo and 1 yo.

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child? I was pretty confident with this as we have really put the cream through it’s paces. Myself and my husband have mainly been using the spf 30 for work. We both teach PE so are our in the sun all day, every day. Neither of us have had any incidents of burning since starting using the cream. We have also been using the spf 50 on our children because of the higher protection but also because there have been a few days spent at the beach or I. And out of a paddling pool. I only had to reapply the lotion on the very hottest day where the children were both in and out of the water.

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free? Very easy to apply. Non greasy which definitely helps. It absorbs really quickly. I also really like the guide inside the box.

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product? The protection level.

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? Yes, definitely.

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child? Very. The high SPF helped and there was no burning when playing outside in the sunshine after one application.
  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free? Yes, the cream was easy to apply and didn't take too much rubbing in. It can be a problem otherwise with a fidgety toddler!
  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product? SPF, suitability for sensitive skin and price.
  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? Yes, it was suitable for mine and DDs sensitive skin and easy to apply.

  • Who did you try the sun cream on?

Myself (very pale skin and dark hair), DS (19 months old, not overly fair skin and blonde hair) and DP (dark hair and olive skin)

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

The product worked well - we were all out for the full day and followed all instructions regarding application times etc, and we were all protected throughout.

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

Very easy to apply - the dispenser made it very easy to get the correct amount (unlike bottles that can sometimes end up with waste) and easy to apply and make sure it was rubbed into the skin rather than just sitting on top. The process was definitely fuss free.

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

The UVA/B rating is the most important thing for me, along with it being suitable for sensitive skin as our DS has a reaction to some branded sun cream products such as Nivea. Picking the right SPF is also important to me at the time of purchase, eg when we traveled to Cyprus last year, it was important to have factor 50 sun cream for myself and DS, whereas in the UK I would probably use factor 30 for myself and 50 for DS.

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes I would buy this again - it worked well, offered great protection and didn't cause any reactions to DS's skin.

I tried it on myself, my husband and my 5 month old son.

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

I was pretty confident. No redness or burning and the product lasted quite a long time, I didn’t feel much need for re-application (although I did the first few times I used it as I was a little nervous! Though I really didn’t need to be!)

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

Yes very easy to apply, spreads well. And only have to do it once on a wriggly baby!!!

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

High factor protection, sensitive to skin.

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Definitely would repurchase, I felt it was really high quality and did the job! Great that I didn’t have to worry too much about applying several times to a little wriggler and was great it didn’t bother his skin or cause any discomfort. Excellent overall really pleased thank you for opportunity of trying it!

  • Who did you try the sun cream on?

My 2 & 3 yr old and tried it myself.

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

The information on the suncream sounded impressive and we didn’t get burnt!

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

The SPF 30 one was very impressive as it wasn’t at all greasy and didn’t leave that white residue. I also liked that it was water resistant and didn’t require reapplying - which made it very convenient. I think the kids are more attracted to the spray bottles (especially as the tend to have bright colours on) and I guess it is handy to be able to spray on sunscreen, but I always find it tricky to keep hold of the bottle to press the spray bit again once my hands have got greasy from rubbing the sunscreen onto the kids - this wasn’t at all sticky and felt really moisturising. A little went a long way too.

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

That it works and that the kids don’t react to it.

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes - I really liked having such a high SPF and my kids not reacting to it (my 3 yr old has eczema prone sensitive skin). The SPF 30 I really enjoyed using myself as it wasn’t at all sticky/greasy and It didn’t leave a white residue. Only having to apply once in the day was also very convenient.

Thank you for allowing us to take part in this trial.
I used this on myself 3dc and my dh.
I found it very easy to apply and was hassle free as it rubbed in really well and none of us burnt.
I would say the protection level is what concerns me most and wouldn't hesitate on pricing if it does what it says it will do.
Yes I would definitely buy again and recommend to family and friends.

Myself and my children 14, 5 and 10 months.

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

I certainly believe it provided excellent protection for us all. There has been no hint of sunburn when using these products.

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

I like the pump system although one bottle arrived in 2 pieces presumably due to a knock in transit.

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

It has to be hypoallergenic and non greasy whilst providing a high level of protection.

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Definitely, especially if on offer as it is on the pricey side.

Who did you try the sun cream on? Both daughters and myself

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child? My children love being out in the garden and I'm always concerned about the sun exposure even with sun cream on normally, as my one daughter always seems to catch the sun regardless. This cream however, kept them both fully protected and my daughter showed no signs of being burnt at all, no redness or anything. Very impressed

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free? Very easy to apply, soaked in very well. Non greasy which is great. Not too much was needed either.

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product? Level of protection and reasonably priced

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? Yes if it was on offer I would definitely purchase.im also interested in trying out the "face" one shown in the leaflet that was provided.

Who did you try the cream on?

  • both myself and my 2 kids (aged 5 & 1).

How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?
  • very confident. We've not had much sun here in central Scotland over the last couple of weeks but Ultrasun is a brand I trust because of it's uva and uvb protection. I'm very pale and burn and freckle very easily so I need a high factor sun cream which doesn't irritate my skin and I'm delighted that this product fitted the bill and was incredibly easy to apply.

Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?
  • Very easy to apply on myself and my 5 year old, not so much the 13 month old! I used this while having an eczema flare up and this didn't aggravate it at all. Both creams were so easy to use, dried in very quickly and didn't stain clothes.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
  • high level of uva protection, suitable for sensitive eczema prone skin, and doesn't stain clothes.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
  • Yes. The high price point is quite off putting so would probably stock up when on offer due to it giving excellent protection and a little seems to go a long way. Very happy with this product.

Myself, husband and all 3 of our children (6,4&1)

-How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?
When I first applied it I had high expectations, and also was a bit worried about if it would do exactly what it was claiming

-Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?
Yes, I loved that it was a pump too, no spraying all over clothing and causing stains etc

-What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
High star rating, good reviews, nice smooth coverage, and a nice smell

-Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
Yes I would, we went to the beach on Saturday (has been applied on many occasions but this is one specific) and we had at least 8 hours in direct sunlight enjoying the beach, we applied the cream when we got there and again after the children got out of the water after swimming, once home, we realised the children didn't even have a dot of red! Amazing coverage and so worth the high price tag!

  • Who did you try the sun cream on?

My husband (SPF 30), myself (SPF 30) and my toddler who is 30 Months (SPF 50).

  • How confident were you that this product provided the best and long lasting sun protection for you and/or your child?

I was very happy with the results of the suncream - both the SPF 30 and 50.

  • Did you find the product easy to apply? Was the process fuss free?

Both products were easy to apply and absorbed well into the skin. I personally prefer a spray application, as with the SPF 30, so would have liked the SPF 50 to be the same, especially as I used it on my toddler. Spraying makes for an easier application.

  • What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

High SPF factor, kind to Ecezma prone and Sensitive Skin as all of the family suffer one or the other, proven protection on trying it out and a spray application bottle.

  • Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

I would buy this again as it had both good results with protecting the skin against the sun and on Sensitive/Ecezma prone skin. I have found other sun protections that give me the same results and are less expensive, so I would have to find it on offer to buy it.
