This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested the personalised pen pal experience from Banjo Robinson the travelling cat, who helps boost creativity, reading and writing skills for their child/children.

Non-Tester? 90% of Mumsnet Tester's children wrote Banjo a reply and Banjo Robinson has now officially launched! They are offering 15% off full subscription charges with the code BanjoLovesMumsnet. This code is valid until 31/10/18.

Here’s what testers received:

  • An initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, a doodle sheet to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers.
  • A follow up letter from Banjo Robinson detailing his next stop in his travels including more goodies.

Here’s what Tree Climber Publishing have to say: “Banjo Robinson the cat is in India at the moment, checking out the Taj Mahal. He was at the pyramids last Tuesday, and next week he's off to the Great Wall of China. And while he’s away on his amazing travels, Banjo sends real, personalised letters to your child full of exciting tales all year round. Your child will get a world map and stickers to track Banjo’s progress and two personalised letters asking them to reply with pictures and messages.

Letters from Banjo Robinson encourage them to craft a reply, improving their writing skills and creativity. Parents can spend quality time with their children, away from tablets and TV, reading Banjo's letters, widening the child’s vocabulary, learning about different countries, and building communication skills."

Testers please answer the following questions:
  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Yes it was great. Good quality product and daughter loved it

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter absolutely loved receiving the letters and loved writing back. She really bought into the “make believe” aspect of the letters and looks out the our neighbours cat who picked up her post.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

She loved writing back and checking if the car had picked up her letter

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The long is too long and tedious for younger children (my child is 5). It was hard to keep her attention while reading it.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes, price dependant

No, it’s too expensive. £5 a month is more reasonable. I really want to continue and subscribe as she loved it, but I’m really put off by the price

Just wanted to add that it is a shame that the test now stops so abruptly. Like other posters, I will also be having to field questions about where our letter from China is, and if we subscribe, I would imagine we'd have to start from the beginning again which will be impossible to explain.

My 7 year old daughter was so excited when she got this. I gave a bit of a back story before I gave the pack to her, which brought up a few questions, but my quick thinking got her excited! Both the letters she received, she replied too and hid under the sofa. But from what she has said and reacted she really loved it.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? Quite satisfied. I loved the idea and ds aged 4 loves reading and learning about different countries plus we want to encourage him to write more, so I was very excited about the product. I already subscribe to 2 children’s products and would be happy to do a third.

The story about lunch and a cat was not believed.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? Ds can read very well but I don’t think the font or style of the letter was ideal. The info was ok but pretty bland and he didn’t find it interesting.

He wrote back to the first letter but not the second.
The map was nice as were the stickers. I thought the colouring sheet wasn’t great.
  • What did you like most about the letters? The combination of reading, writing, geography and real post!

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? I loved the idea but ds wasn’t keen, banjo has not been mentioned once despite the map having been put up on the wall.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family. Maybe if I thought they would like it.

-cost - unlikely I would subscribe but thankyou for allowing us to take part. I was hoping it would be great. The price is not surprising but it seems underwhelming for almost £100 a year. A small piece of white writing paper. Small white envelope. Approx 10 normal sized coloured stickers. Letter on white paper. Small colouring sheet on white paper. However I am not after trinket style souvenirs either or key rings etc as too much clutter.

Thank you for the opportunity to test this out, we loved it!

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Very satisfied.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My 6 year old son absolutely loved the letters. He was until fairly recently a quite reluctant reader but was more than happy to read through Banjo's letter in one sitting without pausing. He needs a lot of persuasion to write at all but happily sat down to write a reply to the first letter (we've not had chance to do the second one with back to school stuff on).

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The map and the stickers and the geography element are great. My son has it up on his wall and loved finding the country to match the stickers.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The concept of a cat that travels the world and sends him letters was fine, as was our cat being friends with him, but my son was a bit "yeah right" with the idea of me having lunch with a cat. The introduction might be better as I'd seen our cat talking to a strange looking cat who looked like he was off travelling somewhere.

Another issue was Banjo saying he was going to the Amazon rainforest "tomorrow". We didn't get chance to sit down to write a reply and my son was upset that Banjo wouldn't get his letter before his trip. Avoiding anything to specific in terms of time would solve that one.

Adding in details from my son's reply to appear in the next letter as others have said would be a bit bonus.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes, absolutely.

  • Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

My son has loved the first two letters so I would pay this.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? I liked the concept and I was really looking forward to seeing how it was done.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? She was so excited when she received the letters and has told pretty much everyone about the letters and about Banjo. She has written her replies and asked our cat to collect them to take to Banjo. She loved the stickers too and the map as well.

  • What did you like most about the letters? My five year old loved the letters and I enjoyed reading them to her. She wrote her replies and didn't let me see what they said before they were posted for our cat to collect and take to Banjo.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? Perhaps needs a more environmentally friendly method of sending than a plastic bag unless it is biodegradable.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Yes I think I would.

Do you think this is a fair price for the product? I think the price is a little expensive for what you get. I think £5 per month would be better for what's included. My husband thought one letter per month for about £2.50/£3 would be better to allow time for reading and writing and also keep children interested but I'm not sure as it is likely to be almost forgotten if waiting a month for a reply.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Very satisfied. I thought it was good quality and very interesting.

What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter enjoyed reading the letters. She’s cat mad so it really appealed to her. She enjoyed writing back.

What did you like most about the letters?

The personal touches. Also Learning about the different countries and putting the stickers on the map.

Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

No but I do think the subscription is quite expensive for our budget and would soon add up so it’s a shame there isn’t more options to suit different budgets. Such as 1 letter per month etc.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes definitely and already have.

Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I do but I think a lot of families won’t be able to afford it. Especially as many have more than one child.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Quite satisfied although he seemed unconvinced about me having lunch with a cat!

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He wrote back to the first one but not the second. He's only 5 so I read the letter out. He enjoyed it but it was a bit long for him to even attempt to read by himself.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The personalisation was really good

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Instructions as to where to put the stickers and also the ability to feed back the childrens replies to get even more personalisation (and I've just seen that this is possible). What would be awesome would be for the parents who took part in the trial to be able to continue for half price as I would totally go for that.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Maybe if the price was right

Not for the amount of work the parent has to put in. I would pay £5 a month tops.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
It’s a good service and lovely ideas. My 8 year old found them very easy to read though.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? He found them very easy to read. He enjoyed reading them but wasn’t that bothered to reply, though did reply to one of them as he wanted to see if the cat would take it away and asked us not to touch it.
  • What did you like most about the letters?

The personalised stickers and the info in them.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I think the age group needs looking into. There’s a big difference in reading and writing ability between a 5 year old and 7/8 year old. The older kids need more information and younger kids perhaps easier letters to read and more letter writing prompts. The ‘magic’ also seems a bit odd for older children too who maybe past that stage of things and wanted the truth of how it works...
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Not sure

Really nice idea but perhaps more tweaking required and I think an information book on the country or something more would be needed for the price.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Pretty satisfied, it seemed like a very quality service with lots of nice stickers and stationary. The pack was high quality.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My son, nearly 4, was a bit confused about what was going on, I had to do a lot of explaining. He didn't really understand the countries or global element. He drew pictures on the letter but totally forgot about the whole process within a few hours.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The stickers and the map.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I think differently pitched letters for age groups would be useful, eg preschool, reception, older school years etc.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I would recommend to those with older children.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was very satisfied with the service.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

DS (7) loved them. He was so excited when they came and excited to write his letter back.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked the colours and the fact that they are personalised.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

No, I actually just thought they were great.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes I would. DS is a reluctant reader and writer and he was so thrilled about the letters that it really encouraged him to read them and write back.

I'm not sure. That's nearly £4 a letter which is comparable with a magazine so I think it is a little bit pricey as the magazine comes with the crappy plastic toy - I know which DS would prefer me to spend the money on.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
The first letter was great and met with enthusiasm, but the gap between the first and second letter led my child to become disinterested and question the "realness" of the letters.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

Very excited the first time, but I haven't been able to convince her to write the next letter as she now doesn't believe he's real.
  • What did you like most about the letters?

The geographical element, learning about different countries in a hands on way is lovely.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

As other responders have said, a genuine artefact from the country would raise the value. Also curriculum based learning would be a great value.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Maybe, if their child was especially into geography or cats.

It is a fair price, but I think my child being nearly 9 is too old for this product. You have to catch them at the make believe stage for the idea to take.

My daughter was initially excited about Banjo, however I think a more detailed back-story for parents to use might help to make it more believable. My four year-old daughter looked at me like I was mad when I randomly said I’d had lunch with a cat!!

I think also perhaps Banjo’s letters
could be much more detailed, and contain more information about each country, so the children can really learn more. Perhaps a fact-sheet about each country could be included, and a fact-file created?

My daughter enjoyed colouring-in the pictures that Banjo sent, and really engaged with writing her reply to Banjo (with her big sister’s help!) and posting it under the sofa. I think she would have been even more excited with her reply if the letter Banjo sent had been more personalised to her. Although, the sofa colour was a good touch.

The map of the world was great, and my daughter straight away wanted to put it up on the wall. We weren’t sure what we were meant to do with all the stickers though, so another suggestion I would make would be for this to be explained to the parents.

Thankyou for selecting us for this trial. I think the concept of Banjo is great, my daughter and I enjoyed taking part. I think with a few tweaks this could be a very good way for young children to learn about the world, and spend quality time with parents.

I was satisfied, the letters were very well written and at the right level. My son enjoyed the letters.

I liked that it encouraged him to read and had some information that was educational.

- Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I think an online blogg and chat would be good; where the kids can ask questions.

yes

If the personalized reply was written by the Banjo team that would better as it is difficult to find time, actually posting a reply in a prepaid envelope might make it worth the money (and the walk to the post box would get the kids out of the house for a bit of fresh air!).

My son enjoyed the letters more so once he realised it was personalised to him "how does Banjo know that!" Was good fun and was great to get him practising reading and writing.
I think that some of the language could be simplified making it easier for younger ones to fully understand the concept. I would recommend it to others. £7.99 Just for the letters is steep but with the stationary and bits included this seems a fair price. Overally my son loved it and did write back.

  1. I was satisfied, it was fun and high quality and something different. We enjoyed it together.
  2. She loved getting the exciting pack with the map and that a cat had written to her! I did the build up which added to the magic. I did have to work to hold her interest as she's only 4 and so we paced the activities over a few days, she wrote back and it was the most she's ever written. So she was motivated by it and enjoyed it. She also made banjo a necklace and talked about him a lot.
  3. I most liked the personalisation and the fact you learn a bit of geography along the way , I like the PS box option idea which is available in the full package.
  4. Paper envelopes not plastic cello, I think having differentiation for different ages would be good, the sketch book pictures were very small for four year old hands and she asked me to do them together with her.
  5. Yes I think they are great.
  6. Its a fair price but I couldn't really afford it to be honest. Maybe they could do a discounted print at home version?

Great idea and will consider subscribing when I'm no longer on maternity leave.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? I do like the concept and Lucas liked having post addressed to him. We found that the letters were just too long though. After a few sentences he got bored and as most of the personalised stuff seemed to be as a PS at the end he didn't really get the benefit of this. Also, because there was such a delay in the project, the first letter literally arrived 2 days before we went on holiday. Lucas was excited by the map more than the letter to be honest. With a holiday in between there was less time to really get him "buying in" to the concept.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? As above they were too long and so he lost interest unfortunately
  • What did you like most about the letters? The personalised bits were cute but they need to be at the start rather than the end
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? I just didn't find the contents of the letter particularly inspiring or colourful. Both letters seemed, basically, identical. Without variation each time they would become too "samey"
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Possibly, Just because they didn't "do" it for Lucas that's not to say they wouldn't appeal to others.

Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription is £7.90/month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I think its a bit overpriced, i think something similar could be created at home for little or no cost.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I was very satisfied. My child loved hearing the letters read out by me and using the stickers to decorate and add to the poster.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

She enjoyed them and wrote back immediately and put her letter under the sofa the same night! She was fascinated that Banjo knew the colour of our sofa!

  • What did you like most about the letters?

They were educational and easy for children to understand. They were also exciting.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Nothing, perhaps more stickers.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes I would.

  • ‘A Banjo Robinson subscription is £7.90/month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

Yes, I would be happy to pay this.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

My son loved receiving the letters from Banjo! it was a real treat over the summer holidays and the little pack with the letter was used well. The letters were fun, easy for him to read and engaging, teaching him something new about the countries visited.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He really loved the letters, and wrote back straight away! He was amazed that the letters got "picked up"...

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked that they encouraged him to read and think about the letters and countries, sparking his imagination and developing his literacy skills.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I liked the packs as they were, but would expect a lower price.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Maybe. I like the idea but find the subscription cost expensive.

  • Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

Sadly, no. The letters would be pre-designed and computer generated so not much human input in the printing. Would be prepared to pay perhaps £4 - £5 max.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

My son really enjoyed the post addressed to him! And he did find the whole leaving a letter for Banjo thing quite magical (a bit like our Elf on the Shelf).

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? My son did but was more interested in the colouring / stickers.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I thought it was informative and interesting - great way to get kids learning about other countries and cultures.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The letters were really long and unfortunately not readable for my son who is 6.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

If the letters were in a slightly shorter format / easier for my son to read himself, then yes. Its a sweet idea and great way to encourage further learning in a different way. I do however think its perhaps a little on the pricey side for what currently is offered.
