This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested the personalised pen pal experience from Banjo Robinson the travelling cat, who helps boost creativity, reading and writing skills for their child/children.

Non-Tester? 90% of Mumsnet Tester's children wrote Banjo a reply and Banjo Robinson has now officially launched! They are offering 15% off full subscription charges with the code BanjoLovesMumsnet. This code is valid until 31/10/18.

Here’s what testers received:

  • An initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, a doodle sheet to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers.
  • A follow up letter from Banjo Robinson detailing his next stop in his travels including more goodies.

Here’s what Tree Climber Publishing have to say: “Banjo Robinson the cat is in India at the moment, checking out the Taj Mahal. He was at the pyramids last Tuesday, and next week he's off to the Great Wall of China. And while he’s away on his amazing travels, Banjo sends real, personalised letters to your child full of exciting tales all year round. Your child will get a world map and stickers to track Banjo’s progress and two personalised letters asking them to reply with pictures and messages.

Letters from Banjo Robinson encourage them to craft a reply, improving their writing skills and creativity. Parents can spend quality time with their children, away from tablets and TV, reading Banjo's letters, widening the child’s vocabulary, learning about different countries, and building communication skills."

Testers please answer the following questions:
  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
my daughter loved receiving the letter, she was so excited! but the letters were a little difficult for her to read and understand (she is 5) and she quickly lost interest in them but know she remembered key things are she remembered them afterwards eg that Banjo went to Brazil.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

she loved all the bits which came with the letter, stickers and things
  • What did you like most about the letters?

the stickers for the map and the opportunity to write a reply
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

maybe an easier letter for her to read and understand
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

yes, because kids love getting things in the post and the element of excitement and make belief

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

The letters were visually exciting, lovely quality, great stickers and character was appealing. The idea of country related activities was unique, as was the personalisation elements.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

They liked the stickers and found the personalisation fun. They liked the idea of writing back but after reading the letter and doing the stickers their concentration was gone so it seemed a bit like homework.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

Introduction to different countries, vibrant colours and quality of the products. Personalisation and great quality stickers. Character is cute and appealing.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Letters were a bit long for our age group, needed more country related facts to keep interest. The map could have done with being glossy to ensure it lasts longer and fits in with the quality of the rest of the product. Maybe different activities like making something or colouring in so it felt less like homework.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

As a quirky and different gift yes.

I would not have paid £7.90, even for £5.35 I would expect more items and activities.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

My son really liked it, especially the map and he really looked forward to his second letter.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He wrote back the first time and was very excited about sticking the stickers on the map.

What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The letters looked very appealing and exciting for my son. I felt they could have had more interesting information about the location rather than a lot of irrelevant things which made the letter a bit long. My son didn't ask me to read it again, although he spent a long time looking at the map.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes

-Do you think this is a fair price for the product?
If it is 2 letters a month then yes.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Quite satisfied - appealed more to 8 year old daughter than 5 year old son who I was hoping would use it

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

5 year old found quite wordy and didn't really capture his attention. He did write one back with persuasion but didn't really buy into the letter being picked up from under the sofa

  • What did you like most about the letters?

Good quality materials. Son liked stickers. Like the pen-friend concept and the ability to personalise letters

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Need to be more clear as to which age range this is targeting. Letters were too long/wordy for 5 year old, yet 8 year old didn't believe the Banjo story. Needs to be more fact based and punchy I think

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

As a concept yes, but with tweaks to letters as per above

  • A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

Yes for 2 letters a month

Yes for £5 ish I probably would subscribe if DD wanted to continue with it.

My 5 year old enjoyed receiving the initial pack, however this is possibly because it was just for her and not something her younger brother also got. She didn't believe in the character at all unfortunately and probably would have appreciated it more if the character was either human or magical (Santa, fairies, things of that ilk). She was distinctly unimpressed with the suggestion of her indoor cat leaving the house to deliver the letter Grin.

Despite this she was a big fan of the stationery and activities and was keen to write her letter with my help (due to all the focus being on her). She didn't seem all that excited by the response however during the trial the response was delayed which could explain why it no longer caught her attention.

I did find that my daughter was a bit young to really get into writing much in a letter yet the character would only really be believable for a much younger child, so I'm not really sure which demographic the product would suit.

I understand that in the final product there would be a more tailored response which would be a welcome change, so that the child feels like the character is actually interested in them. As this was not included in the trial I would not be able to comment on the quality of the letters.

My daughter would have been just as happy with some stationery and a colouring in book meaning this product would not be cost effective. However for a child who appreciated the letter component more may look forward to receiving the letters twice a month.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

  • It was great! I thought they were packaged really nicely and it was brilliant for her to get post with her name on.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

Yes, DD wrote back both times and enjoyed drawing him pictures too.
She loved the map and the stickers.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The fact they were sort of personalised, we have a cat so linking to this made it real for her and she really bought into it, also the colour of the sofa etc. I'm a primary teacher and it was a really cute way to share geographical information etc.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

My DD is only 5 and therefore needed a lot of help reading the letters - they were quite long. I can see that this wouldn't be such an issue with older children.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Absolutely!!!

My son absolutely loved this! He kept asking each day whether he had had a reply to the letter he sent! He is interested in the world anyway, so the map really engaged him and he loved the stickers. I would recommend, but am unsure whether I would buy for £5.35 a month - if the price was lower it would be more appealing. For a younger child who could not write back might not be so engaging.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Initially very, then not so much

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

They wrote back to the first. The second letter was very impersonal, they got the colour of the sofa wrong and then my daughter really lost interest.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked the make believe, magical element and the personalisation of the first letter.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Unclear what was supposed to happen and where it was going. If the personalisation element dropped so far after the first letter it makes me doubt what would be coming through in future.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Not in its current state. Shame because I loved the concept

No, it's too much. to be fair, this wasn't a good test as the back and forth element was lacking. But £60 per year is overkill.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? Fairly satisfied although I think my child is probably not quite the right audience

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? He was interested very briefly, but not enough to keep him attending for the whole letter. He came to listen for the second one but didn't seem excited by it. He didn't write back.

  • What did you like most about the letters? The personal details - it's hard to keep my son engaged, and I definitely felt this helped.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? Only things that have been mentioned already - speed and price; more personalisation

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Not at present; it's too expensive for what it is. I may have felt differently if we'd had a chance to experience the letters in the proper time frame.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Very satisfied - it has really captured our child's imagination.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

They absolutely loved it and have been telling their friends all about the travelling cat who writes to them.
  • What did you like most about the letters?

The personalised content which really brought it to life for our child. Also the little nuggets about each country so that we could then go and look up that information online and watch a YouTube video.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

A photo of Banjo in each place.

Also if the letters could be shorter for younger subscribers.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes as it has really captured our child's imagination and we now spend a lot of time looking at world maps and talking about features of different countries, what people there eat and wear etc.

Not at all. My daughter was completely disinterested in the letter. She hasn't even looked at the second one. She liked the paw stickers and the map, but that was it.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

No. I ended up scribing her thoughts on Monday night so she could get the second letter on Tuesday. She thought the first letter was 'weird' and she hasn't looked at the second one.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The stickers

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The writing style is very weird. Assuming the idea of the project is to enthuse early writers, the contents were aimed at much older children and made a lot of references that went completely over my daughter's head. I reckon you'd have to be about 10 to find those letters interesting.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

No. I had a battle to get my daughter to bother with this, and she is very keen to read and write at the moment.

For context: my son is 6, in year 1. He is a average acedemically as far as I can tell, his reading and writing are coming along nicely (he could do neither when he started school) but he isn’t hugely interested in going beyond whatever he is set as homework.

  1. overall I thought it was a nice idea but DS wasn’t that interested. He was vaguely interested in the map and stickers but not overly fussed.

  2. our household doesn’t ‘do’ Santa or the tooth fairy so he wasn’t exactly convinced by the idea of a talking, writing Cat. He accepted it as a fun joke - I suggested he could draw a picture for banjo and he agreed but ultimately it was always ‘later’ and never got done.

  3. the map

  4. make the letters simpler, less wordy. Less information and perhaps more interaction (I visited Egypt - colour this pyramid)

  5. really, really not

My so enjoyed the idea of banjo and loved the idea of leaving the letter under the sofa. However the exitmenr was all gone after we spent so long reading the letter. It took too much time for him so he lost interest. Tried to get him interested / engaged again but he was not.

The stickers etc were a good idea and we did talk a bit about other countries which was useful however because of the gap in Between letters the interest was lost.

It’s a nice ide to encourage reading however the subscription cost was quite high and I’m quite sure the novelty of banjo would go quite quickly

Can't find my review so will repost...

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

It’s a sweet idea and my 8 year old was massively excited to get the first letter. She kept looking out of the ‘collection cat’ and was totally into it. The second letter was less excited for her I think. She said she was crying tears from happiness when she got the first letter but I think she was a bit over it as the second took a while to come.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

She did love the first, as mentioned, and wrote back immediately. She liked the second too but wasn’t keen to write back this time.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I think the personalisation is nice and the idea is good. I like the way they looked and the ideas / topics they had.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I think they could be a bit more interactive in terms of making things, experiments or maybe something like, ‘i went to india and I tasted some spicy food. Here’s a recipe for something I ate. Maybe you can make it and let me know what you think of it?’. I’d prefer some sort of craft to make or even toys and more stationery to be included ideally though.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Possibly - it depends what they are looking for. I have to say that there are many services oit there and a subscription has to be pretty enticing to get my kids attention to complete with craft / science and other magd / boxes.

I would say that it’s hard to justify this much per month when other subscription services offer similar engagement and enjoyment for less money or charge more and deliver a lot more. We have 3 currently and all are better value in my opinion (they are for my 8 and 10 year old)

Sorry I’m late to post.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

It was ok. Not particularly wonderful or engaging but she liked her letters I suppose.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

The letters looked nice. She drew a picture after the first one.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I realise that part of the concept is the travelling to other countries but this aspect went completely over the head of my nearly five year old. She hasn’t really travelled and it was all a bit abstract.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

She’s love letters from the cat but maybe without the travel element and with more meaningful context for a five year old.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

No. Although the personalised bits were lovely I just didn’t think there was enough there that couldn’t be done myself on a computer in a few minutes.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? she thought Banjo was the coolest ( her words ) she has decided when she's old ( 10 in her words haha! ) she is going to travel the world with banjo and visit China as she loves the place ( her answers get even better lol )
  • What did you like most about the letters? I liked the interaction and that they were personalised. This makes it more unique and extra special for the child and parent. I mean come on who doesn't like getting an exciting letter that's not a bill?!
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? i would love ( although i mentioned up above about it being negative ) possible an interactive app that could accompany subscribers to follow Banjo on his journey BUT that has interactive maps that allow the kids to click on the places he has visited and learn key, useful facts about each place. They are far more likely to remember and interact if they are part of the whole journey along with learning capitals of where he visited, maybe the signature food and possibly the national anthem and flag?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? 100000000% i have done nothing but rave about them since i received the first one.

Thanks again so much for the chance to try it out. you have one happy mummy and little girl :-)

  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month.

Yes i have already added it to the budget and will be subscribing :-)
