This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested the personalised pen pal experience from Banjo Robinson the travelling cat, who helps boost creativity, reading and writing skills for their child/children.

Non-Tester? 90% of Mumsnet Tester's children wrote Banjo a reply and Banjo Robinson has now officially launched! They are offering 15% off full subscription charges with the code BanjoLovesMumsnet. This code is valid until 31/10/18.

Here’s what testers received:

  • An initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, a doodle sheet to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers.
  • A follow up letter from Banjo Robinson detailing his next stop in his travels including more goodies.

Here’s what Tree Climber Publishing have to say: “Banjo Robinson the cat is in India at the moment, checking out the Taj Mahal. He was at the pyramids last Tuesday, and next week he's off to the Great Wall of China. And while he’s away on his amazing travels, Banjo sends real, personalised letters to your child full of exciting tales all year round. Your child will get a world map and stickers to track Banjo’s progress and two personalised letters asking them to reply with pictures and messages.

Letters from Banjo Robinson encourage them to craft a reply, improving their writing skills and creativity. Parents can spend quality time with their children, away from tablets and TV, reading Banjo's letters, widening the child’s vocabulary, learning about different countries, and building communication skills."

Testers please answer the following questions:
  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

  1. Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

  • very satisfied

  1. What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

  • The letters where written in such a way, that further learning could be incorporated into the activity, for example Banjo mentioned 'sugar loaf mountain' in Brazil, we then looked up where sugar loaf mountain was, and how the name came from how cane sugar used to be packed and transported to the UK.

  1. What did you like most about the letters?

  • that they were personalised which was a really nice touch; that they were really engaging and enabled further learning of geography, natural history, history and a few words of the language of the countries Banjo visited/ is about to visit.

  1. Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

  • Yes; I think a slightly larger and easier to read type face would be great for younger children, so it encourages them to read the letter. It would also be great if Banjo could ask the child/ children to find out three or more facts about the country he's going to visit; for example "can you find out and draw a picture of the flag of Brazil; can you find out about a river that runs through China? What wild animals might I [Banjo] meet on the plains of Tibet (or wherever Banjo is going). Can you help me [Banjo] get from A to B (so child has to have a go at looking at a map and drawing or writing directions), etc.

  1. Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

  • YES! YES and YES!

Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription is £7.90/month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I think it is slightly on the Pricey side, I would be very happy to spend £7.00 per month on this product, and if it was £7.00 a month I would definitely sign to a subscription.

Oops missed out part of qu2.
Yes my child did write back and she made a little mouse for Banjo, as she thought he'd like some company on his travels...
Can I also add it was a lovely touch that our dog was in the letter and dd loved the idea that our dog helped get the letter to Banjo.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
The quality of the materials, and the quantity was great. My daughter enjoyed getting letters and replying to them. The only issue was the letter, size 11 font on 2 full sides of A4, was far too long. For a 5 year old to try and read, and boring.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

Dd was really curious and wanted to know as much as possible about the places he mentioned in his letter. She wrote a reply the same day.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

Visually, they are lovely. It's also a nice way to introduce other countries and cultures.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The letter was far too long. I felt bored reading it never mind my daughter.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I've already spoken to friends about the idea, but we're all in agreement that it would be something we could easily do ourselves.

For 2 letters a month, no I wouldn't pay for it. Although in all honesty, I'm not sure that I would pay for the service at all.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Very satisfied, my daughter loved the letters and was so excited waiting for them to arrive

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

The second the letters arrived she wrote back. She loved learning about the different countries that he went to.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

That they were personalised. She really did believe that Banjo was writing to her. She was excited that it wasn't for the family, it was for her :)

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Just additional personalisation (however, I understand that this was a trial)

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

It would depend on the child. My daughter loved it but I know that my cousin of the same age would not have been fussed at all.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I was very satisfied. I thought it was quite good to have a few weeks between writing and receiving the next letter as DD had almost forgotten about Banjo and a new one appeared. She already loves writing so I thought that having something to focus on to channel her creative tendencies.

What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
DD loved them. I span a bit of a tale (or should that be tail??) about meeting Banjo for lunch and that he was going to write to DD. She didn't believe me at first but then the first letter appeared and she was amazed and delighted.

What did you like most about the letters?
I liked that there was a post script with an additional detail about our house.

Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
1- The ability to add additional details for future letters would be good.
2- I feel that for the price of the subscription there could be a little bit more to the pack, maybe an activity based on the country Banjo is in.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
I would tell them about them but would mention the pros and cons as outlined above. The child really needs to be a fluent reader in my opinion as my younger son did not have the patience to work through the text.

A Banjo Robinson subscription is £7.90/month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?
I think this seems quite pricy for a letter and stickers. It would be better if it was under £5 and included a themed activity for the child to do.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Pretty satisfied overall. I thought the overall concept was good and I liked the actual design and content of the envelope.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

She really liked the stickers and looked over the map, but was less enthusiastic about writing back. She didn’t believe the cat story - her words were “you paid someone to send this to me didn’t you?”

  • What did you like most about the letters?

They were engaging and the facts were good. I felt that all the materials were of a high quality and well designed.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Maybe more personalisation- she loved the mention of our dog.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Probably not at the proposed price point. If it were cheaper then yes. For younger children.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

yes- a more realistic map perhaps- for the price i think there should be more to it.
perhaps an album where you can save all banjos letters in? a file of some sort that can be sent out with the 1st letter.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

not really as i dont think it wa worth while-

- Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
So to start with he wasn't into it but then he picked it up one day and wanted to write back - a longer gap between the letters suited us better. I was quite disappointed that they got his surname wrong and put mine instead - quite a presumption there, and had my first name as our home town. I thought that was pretty sloppy for a product test. The level of the letters was pitched about right for us.
- What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? He really loved them, and chuckled a lot about Banjo licking sugarloaf mountain and finding it wasn't made of sugar. He noticed that dirt and ants were also on the colouring sheet provided Grin.
- What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the opportunity to personalise them, Banjo knowing the colour of his sofa really persuaded him it was real. I'd just worry with the mistakes so far that they'd get stuff wrong.
- Is there anything that you feel could be improved? A bit more care and proof reading would be good
- Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? I'm not sure at the moment. I think the price is too high, compared to other monthly packs. I feel a bit sad about it though as my boy did like getting the letters.

I think it's too much. You can get a craft box with multiple activities for that. Okido magazine isn't that much per month. If it was a fiver I'd probably do it.

I found them interesting and funny.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

No.

Yes, I would recommend it, definitely. My middle son is wary of new things, but I'm sure if my youngest son was 5 now he would write back.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
-They were nicely presented and it was a fun idea, but I realised quite early on that I wasn't going to be subscribing and so felt a bit Confused about having to manage my son's expectations with it.
The number of countries in the total list means that it is quite a financial commitment, and whether you want to stop early or late on in the process, you're going to have some quite tricky questions to answer from your kid, especially if they're little.
It sounds like I'm over-egging it but I would hate to be in a position of having to explain to an anxious kid, or a foster kid, or a recently adopted kid that Banjo wasn't going to be writing to them any more, and that they wouldn't get the letters from all the other countries, but that it didn't mean Banjo didn't like them, etc etc. The personalised nature of it suggests to the kid that it's a real relationship, which wouldn't be the case with a bog standard subscription like Toucan Box.
Banjo stopping writing to them is a thing some kids would always remember, so I can imagine some parents might try it and then feel they have to continue a subscription they can't afford or don't want because the alternative is pretty bleak for their kid.

The company could make it so each pack was stand-alone, and that would solve this problem.

The pack was quite text-heavy and I wonder if a simpler version could be made available for younger children.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters?

My son loved the first one which I sat down and went through with him, but the second one arrived in an insanely busy week and he opened and read it on his own, so I wasn't on hand to hype up the excitement.

Did they write back?
Yes to the first one - I wrote the words my son said he wanted to say. It was quite enjoyable.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

It's a whimsical concept and my son loved getting a letter in the post.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

See above

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Possibly, but I would make it clear they were signing up to something that it would feel awkward to discontinue before the end of the collection.

My 8yr old son was more interested in getting his letters from Banjo than when he received them. The timing was a bit off for us as we were in back to school mode.

Not so keen to write a response back. Good to get him into writing again at the end of the holidays (Letter1).

The personalised approach works well. I liked the aspect of a fun way to inspire writing and the informative approach to learning about different countries. More space was required for writing and the activities. I think however it is probably better for a younger child but outside term time in the holidays.

I signed up my 6 year old son who loves adventure to test it out.

-Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
The letters were quite well thought out and cute/colourful, but my son (who thinks a lot) found them rather far fetched and a bit silly - the idea of a cat writing a letter to him.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He liked the idea of getting post. And he enjoyed hearing about the adventures, but he also said it was silly and crazy. He did write back, but needed to be prompted to do it. I think he felt a bit odd writing to an imaginary sounding being! lol

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The map was nice!

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Maybe making it sound a bit more real. A bit more geography element perhaps.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I'm afraid not - just not exciting enough, not when you could write to a real person instead.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Tough one, some things are great and others not so good. I like the idea of stealth teaching reading, writing and geography as my son resists structured learning at home (just reading his school books is a mission). He's only 5, I"m reluctant to push too hard so I was very pleased that he was excited to read the letters and write back.

However I was uncomfortable with the whole concept of supposedly having lunch with an imaginary travelling cat and putting letters under the sofa. My son is very cynical and it was a tough sell.

What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He loved the fact that an actual letter arrived for him in the post. Even though he was dubious he thought the whole thing hilarious and couldn't wait to reply. Unfortunately our neighbour's cat had the wrong name so I had to change it when I reading it out. Thankfully his reading isn't that great or I would have been sussed!

What did you like most about the letters?
I was pleased with the overall quality of all the design and the printed materials but I thought the letters themselves lacked substance. They contained a lot of waffle and the bit about him coming to sit on the sofa was just annoying. I loved the map and the process of getting a sticker for each country, I can really see how he would like to collect them all.

Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More information on the countries he's visiting. The culture, the food, the customs, the traditions, the dress, the tourist attractions. There was a passing reference to Sugarloaf Mountain and I think if he had been given more detail he would have asked to look at photos, go on the internet to find out more etc. It felt like a lost opportunity.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
There are a couple of friends of his who would absolutely buy into it so I'd tailor it to those parents.

A Banjo Robinson subscription is £7.90/month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?
It's in line with similar products such as craft boxes so the pricing feels right. However I'd have to have two subscriptions, one for each child, which then becomes a considered purchase especially as it's every month. I think if there was a bit more included, maybe a themed toy or a bigger pack of stickers each week it would be worth it - a magazine is £4/5 now but there's a lot more activities in a magazine.

I'm going to be completely honest and say that my son was not interested at all with the whole thing and didn't want to participate. The initial letter that I read out to him, he didn't really understand and despite me trying to make it sound exciting, he didn't change his mind. My daughter absolutely loved receiving the letters she was so excited (age6) she laid the map out, found the places and popped the stickers on. She also wrote her replies straight away and couldnt wait till morning to see if the letter had been collected. For the price I agree with others, it would be good if there was a little souvenir of each country and also more write up asking the kids to explore certain elements of that country. I probably would recommend it but it does need tweaking just a little bit to be an interesting subscription service.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Not entirely satisfied but I do like the concept.

What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter was very interested initially, but lost interest quite quickly and actually has only replied to the first letter. She loved seeing her dog’s name mentioned in the first letter.

What did you like most about the letters?

My daughter loved receiving a letter addressed to her. The map and stickers were nice, although it was a bit confusing trying to work out which stickers should go where.

Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The overall style of the letter wasn’t really age appropriate for my 5 year old. It was long and there was quite a lot of waffle and not much real information about the countries visited. Some photographs or more drawings or facts within the letter would be good, as it is currently presented it requires quite a lot of parental input to encourage further research. I thought the map could be a bit more colourful, and perhaps could include some kind of scrapbook for keeping the drawings in or collecting country facts or something. I also thought the concept of me having had lunch with the cat a bit much, I sort of glossed over that part.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Not really to be honest.

Fairly satisfied, I liked the concept and it was quirky to my child, helped that my husband was on board with the concept. I think that the activities may need to vary, because if it’s a letter and colouring everytime then I think he would switch off. It needs more back story and maybe this could be linked with online activities as well to vary it a bit.

He wrote back and it wasn’t too much to write but I had to give him structure.
  • What did you like most about the letters?

I think this is a great idea, it teaches children more about the world, the map is great, I was pointing out different countries to the girls (5&3 years old). I would have liked it if the letters could have been addressed to both children, but it wasn’t too much of an issue. The letters come with lots of activities for the child and makes them use they’re imagination.
The way the letters were written were great, my 5 year old struggled with reading it all, so I read them. The girls were very interested in hearing a letter from a cat and looking at the map too. It would have been better if the letter were broken up a bit by pictures. My 5 year old wrote back both times and my 3 year old drew pictures for Banjo. They loved leaving them under the sofa for them to be collected.
I liked the detail that’s goes into the letters, it’s very descriptive.
It would be good if the letters could be addressed to multiple children and if pictures could break up the letter a bit.
I would probably recommend the subscription to some friends, but not sure all would like it.
I think the subscription cost is a little high than what I thought, but if it helps my children learn key skills like writing a letter, geography and reading then it pretty good.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was reasonably satisfied.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter was very excited when the first letter arrived and liked the detail that was relevant to our neighbours cat. She wrote a reply to the first letter but not the second.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

Quite informative and was a good starting point for a conversation about the countries he was visiting.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Like other testers I found the letter quite long winded. By the time the second letter arrived my daughter had lost interest and wasn't as excited. I think if possible more personalisation and more activities to be included with each pack to keep them interested and to make it better value for money.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Not sure in it's current format. I think my daughter (8 years old) is probably at the top age range for this so it might be more suited to younger children. I also think cost wise I would want more included to justify the cost.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes
  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product

I think it’s quite expensive. I’d be tempted by a lower price or maybe a product to accompany the pack to warrant the price.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
We thought letters were a fun idea and DC enjoyed receiving them. Letters arrived when stated and in perfect condition. The letters were too hard for the DC to read by themselves and whilst the letters were long there was very little detail about the places visited/visiting. DC 5 told me straight away that Banjo was just pretend

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters?

DC liked the letters but think this was a novelty and hasn’t asked if there will be any more since reviving the second

Did they write back?
Yes DC wrote back to both letters but said Banjo was pretend.

  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Liked the stickers for map, colouring sheet & personal information. I think the improvements could be having more personal information in the letters and greater information on the places visited/visiting- I thought this was particularly lacking. Letters need to more pitched at the target audience

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I would as a once time novelty but not as a regular subscription as it didn’t hold DC attention enough and was soon forgotten about.

I think £7.90 is very expensive and will price out a lot of families, you aren’t getting much for the money or to keep. The product is easy & cheap to produce. The price would definitely mean I wouldn’t subscribe.

Thank you for opportunity 😃
