This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested the personalised pen pal experience from Banjo Robinson the travelling cat, who helps boost creativity, reading and writing skills for their child/children.

Non-Tester? 90% of Mumsnet Tester's children wrote Banjo a reply and Banjo Robinson has now officially launched! They are offering 15% off full subscription charges with the code BanjoLovesMumsnet. This code is valid until 31/10/18.

Here’s what testers received:

  • An initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, a doodle sheet to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers.
  • A follow up letter from Banjo Robinson detailing his next stop in his travels including more goodies.

Here’s what Tree Climber Publishing have to say: “Banjo Robinson the cat is in India at the moment, checking out the Taj Mahal. He was at the pyramids last Tuesday, and next week he's off to the Great Wall of China. And while he’s away on his amazing travels, Banjo sends real, personalised letters to your child full of exciting tales all year round. Your child will get a world map and stickers to track Banjo’s progress and two personalised letters asking them to reply with pictures and messages.

Letters from Banjo Robinson encourage them to craft a reply, improving their writing skills and creativity. Parents can spend quality time with their children, away from tablets and TV, reading Banjo's letters, widening the child’s vocabulary, learning about different countries, and building communication skills."

Testers please answer the following questions:

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Very satisfied. It's well thought out and effective.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? He loved the letters and was excited to write back.
  • What did you like most about the letters? It encouraged my child to reach for an atlas and learn more about where Banjo was.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? Pricing (but I see you've addressed that) and the ability to combine two children into one letter. Also, a little more personalisation.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Absolutely - I already have and I intend to order a subscription for my nephews.

I tested this with my 4 year old son.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? I thought they were very sweet and interesting.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My son was initially very excited at having a new friend write to him and we helped him write a reply that we left under the sofa. The idea didn’t stick though and he hasn’t mentioned it much afterwards.
  • What did you like most about the letters? Personalised and the stickers.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? Too expensive.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Not really.
Playmobilpeacock · 17/09/2018 16:26

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was satisfied at first but the gap between letters was quite long so my daughter wasn't as excited about the next letter. Also the personalisation was a bit hit and miss as we have a multi coloured sofa and no local cats that my children recognised.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter did like the letter and she wrote back to the first one. She had rather lost momentum by the second.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked the information about the countries and the stickers for the map.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

If the letters could be addressed to 2 children or there was a way of adding a sibling that would be helpful. My youngest was most put out not to get a letter!

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

To be honest, I probably wouldn't at this stage.

The last question was about price.
I think the revised price is more than fair for what you get.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
My 6 year old son really enjoyed receiving a letter addressed to him and that it was from a special talking cat, he was amazed and completely taken with idea. His older brother (9) was equally excited and they read the letter together and looked at the map, although the stickers were all kept by the 6 year old!
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
Completely mesmerized, a different cat started coming into our garden around this time, so both of them were convinced it was a friend of Banjos that collected the letters from under the sofa. He wrote back after the first letter, but there was a long delay and unfortunately due to the nature of the letters, his questions weren't answered. Not so excited at the second letter and didn't write back.
  • What did you like most about the letters? The friendly tone appealed to my children and the stickers!
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More of a personalised response, as I feel the amount asked for per month is a lot for pretty much a standard letter with a few changes for name, sofa colour, any other pets etc.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Not at the current price. I love the idea and the amazed look on their faces, but the time delay and the lack of personalised responses does let it down.
SleepsAMyth · 17/09/2018 17:02

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I was pretty satisfied with the service, my son was very excited to have a letter to him and wanted to complete all activities etc. Some information within the letter that they use to personalise it was wrong even though I had given correct details and emailed to tell them some was wrong, but my son accepted my explanation that cats get some colours mixed up.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My son loved getting the letters and wrote back the same day. He particularly liked the stickers and we had many conversations about where Banjo Robinson was and what he might be doing for several days after he got a letter.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked that they are personalised and that my son was so eager to write back, he didn't feel it was a chore to be writting (which he usually does!)
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
My son was 6 at the time of testing and now 7, so I would like it if they could be made so older children are asked to write more, or use more details etc to encourage their writing skills. My son needs to practice writing and he would happily reply to BR so I feel this could be used even more.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes I would

I would pay £5.35 but no more. For 2 letters a month that seems fair, however more than that and I would feel it is too much and I would not buy the subscription myself and therefore would feel unable to recommend it to others.

Testers please answer the following questions:

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Thrilled to bits with it!! When I told my son I had lunch with a cat called Banjo Robinson, he believed me 100% and was so excited when I said he might write him a letter. The excitement of the letter arriving, addressed to my child, looking like the real deal, and being fun and exciting was PERFECT!!

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He was so so so interested in what Banjo had to say in his letters, and made the whole family sit around him while he opened the letter and read it out. We loved the little envelope and piece of paper included to write back, and the stickers made it fun too!

  • What did you like most about the letters?

They were interesting and easy for him to read without help.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I would love to be able to add more personalised things, like more that Banjo knows about us, my son couldn't believe it when Banjo wrote about our cat and our sofa!
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

YES! They got him reading, thinking, and writing! And it was great to see him so excited about something that wasn't a screen!

YES!! I was so happy when I saw the price....I was so worried that such an amazing subscription would cost a fortune. But I will DEFO be signing up to this, and will recommend highly to friends and family.
I think the option to personalise it etc as you mention is SPOT ON! I can't wait to see more letters!

The fact that they engage the child and make them want to write.

More personalisation.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

I think it's a bit expensive.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? I was pleasantly surprised with how much was included alongside the letter. The poster is a nice size and my son enjoyed searching for the correct spots to place the stickers. He really enjoyed listening to the letters and the personal touches really tickled him.

What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He enjoyed listening to the letters as I read them out and he was very excited when our dog was mentioned. He can't write yet but he narrated a letter for Banjo.

What did you like most about the letters?
The fact that a talking cat was writing to him. He was also very excited that this cat was travelling places and he wanted to know which dinosaurs lived in those cities.

Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
The letters are a little bit too long for a young child and whilst he was very excited to receive the first letter he wasn't as fussed about the second one. Having the letters little bit more personalised would be good as well.

Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes, I think it's a great idea but I think at 4 my child is still a little bit too young for this.

Do you think this is a fair price for the product?
Yes, I would pay the revised price for this but the original price is a little bit too expensive.

Pandrea1 · 17/09/2018 18:57
  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Personally I thought they could have been more exciting, more punchy .
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My son was excited to receive the letters. He wrote back to the first one.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
Loved that they encouraged my son to explore the map and learn about other countries. My son loved the stickers and the posting under the sofa bit,
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More details in the letter about interesting facts about the countries.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes. Think it is a good idea, especially the letter sent through the post and the element of mystery. Helped my son to learn about other countries.

-. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?
Probably considering postage and time spent in production and the need to make a profit.

babysleeper · 17/09/2018 20:15
  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

We thought they were lovely. Gave us lots to talk about and get DS excited, he was particularly intrigued by it being a cat and the cat mentioning our dog!

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He enjoyed them, like a story. He was reluctant to write but he drew and I believe with time and more letters he would have enjoyed writing to Banjo too.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

It was personal and imaginative. It made drawing exciting because I could see that DS was excited and proud that the letter was going to be 'seen by someone'.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Shorter time in between letters!
Possibly one or two more personal comments in the letters.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes, I would. I already mentioned them to DS grandparents and they were very impressed. I think it would be a great way of getting children involved in reading and writing.

  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I think £5.35 would be a fair price, yes. It is educational and exciting and we as a household really enjoyed reading the letters as well as family time writing and drawing.

RhubarbAndCustards · 17/09/2018 20:21

I originally posted my feedback that DD 7 wasn’t overly excited. I wanted to update to add that I’ve come home from work today to find her giddily running round doing her second letter and has spent well over an hour on her reply. When I mentioned that he may not write again she was crestfallen - so we will be subscribing! I think the lower price is more in line with what we would be prepared to pay.

peakypie · 17/09/2018 20:37
  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

My 6 year old was very excited to receive both letters and enjoyed putting the stickers on the world map and reading about different countries. She enjoyed putting up the map in her room and the personalisation in the letter (colour of our sofa). The cat that collected the letters from under the sofa was also a bit strange...

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

She enjoyed receiving and reading the letters, doing the sticking and colouring, however, she only replied to the first letter so I think her enthusiasm waned a bit (perhaps a bit like homework, which can also be a struggle).

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The detail in the letters, igniting their imagination for different countries and cities, was lovely. And the personalisation made it feel special.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Perhaps add more detail to the world map, like mountains, larger rivers, rainforests etc?

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes, for the right price and the right kind of child.

  • A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

Much better than £7.90, although still quite pricey. How many months subscription would we need to complete the map, would be very expensive overall. Bit of a luxury product I think.

Estraya · 17/09/2018 20:40

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I was quite happy with the letters.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? My son loved receiving the letters and loved the map. He wrote back straight away the first time and would probably write again if he was reminded, but was a bit distracted by the start of term.
  • What did you like most about the letters? I liked the map and the information about different countries.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
It could be more personalised maybe. My son asked questions in his letters and these were obviously not answered.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? I think I would recommend them as a fun thing to get a reluctant reader/writer interested.

I think the price is a bit much for what you get. Maybe if there was a bit more to it, like colour postcards and souvenirs from each country.

Sviram · 17/09/2018 21:03

My daughter was so excited to receive her very own mail! I pleasantly happy with the content of the letter and the personalised touch was lovely.

I did find the letter a little too advanced for my daughter, she needed a lot of explaining as to what certain things meant. I think a simplified letter would be better for younger kids.

My daughter loved the map and adding the stickers. The contents of the letter did keep my daughter occupied for a short amount of time...but I think something more is needed like a puzzle maybe(wordseach, trivia, spot the difference etc)

Banjo is a lovely character and my daughter did believe that her reply letter would be collected.

Also i think maybe a little souvenir would be a lovely touch (keyring, fridge magnet etc)

Admiralclingus · 17/09/2018 21:16

I'm really happy with the letters and my daughter was really excited about the letters. She loved the map and has had It out to look at a lot since it came. We went on holiday just after the first letter came but she wrote back to tell Banjo where we were and that nannies cat was going to bring him the letter. She even asked my mom's cat if he would mind taking it for her 😂 she didn't reply to the second one as she took it to her dad's and he lost it 🙄 we both love the map and the information about the countries banjo was visiting. I do feel that the letters could be slightly more personalised though.
I would probably recommend the letters if you have a reluctant reader, my daughter often says she "can't read" but she tried really hard to read the letters.
I think the price is a bit expensive for what came in the original letters, they could maybe include a bit more for the money.

MrsWeasley · 17/09/2018 21:16

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? Fairly satisfied with them.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? The children found it great fun.
  • What did you like most about the letters? That it could give more learning opportunities.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? More activities.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Yes but I would be concerned over the cost.
Hanhan28 · 17/09/2018 21:24

My daughter aged 5 loved receiving the letter and she did engage with it. Wanted me to read it to her and was keen to do the activities. She wrote back both times although I do think she would have preferred to post the letters back rather than put them under the sofa. I’m not sure about the price, I used to subscribe to different things that cost less and provided more so I’m not sure that I would chose to subscribe.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Very, I thought the personalised content and additional items like stickers were lovely
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

she liked listening to them but isn't quite reading herself yet. Hence she didn't write back but did draw a picture.

  • What did you like most about the letters?
tone was perfect and personalised aspects made it something worth buying
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
my only issue was that really my daughter was a little too young to fully engage
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

yes, if they were a year or so older

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Not really satisfied or disatisfied. I like the idea of it and the stickers and the map. I just think the content of the letters was too confusing for my child. My 5 year old would not be able to even attempt to read it by herself and seemed a bit lost when I read it to her as there's quite alot of unnecessary waffle in there that gets in the way of her being able to take in the facts and the important parts. My 8 year old could read it but again got a bit lost in the waffle. We all loved the personalised sentences, they loved the fact that I'd apparently met up with Banjo and that one of our cats would help deliver letters to him!

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
They loved them and they did write back. It was nice as my 8 year old offered to help my 5 year old with her reply so it was nice to just let the two of them get on with it and do something nice together.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the stamps and the reply cards and also the facts within the letter that can be taught and the personlised sentences.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Just the content of the letters. There's too much waffle in there so as I was reading it out I can see it going over my kids heads as they're not really sure what he's saying. I found myself skipping over some bits and jist reading the more exciting/educational sentences. Maybe it could be tailored to suit different ages as I thought my 5 year old would be able to read the letters herself but that isnt the case.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Probably not.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I really liked the idea of a penpal having always had one as a child and my son loved getting post.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
Yes, he enjoyed them and wrote back. However I'm now left with the job of having to explain somehow that Banjo won't be writing back. I really didn't realise that I'd be left with that emotional task after signing up to this trial and am quite annoyed that it wasn't left more open.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
That it comes from different countries. We are a well travelled family and love to talk to our children about the world.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I know the letter writing is the point but he would have liked more pictures and country facts. Also, the personalised bit seemed very tacked on. I can't imagine anyone ever bringing up a beige sofa in conversation. It also took a lot to persuade a 4 year old that a cat was writing him a letter. I can't imagine an older child would be so invested. Perhaps just make it from other children.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
probably not
Gembo78 · 17/09/2018 21:53

Overall satisfaction with letters and communication - to be honest I forgot that I had signed up for the letters as they were delayed several times. When the first letter arrived it mentioned me having lunch with a cat. I wasn’t expecting this and felt w big put on the spot.

What did your child think?
He loved it - Once we got past the initial questions about why I would not have told him that I had met a talking cat 😂 He loved receiving the letters and replying to them.

What did you like most?
The letters were educational and the stickers were personalised.

Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More/larger writing paper is required, even if this is blank. My child’s handwriting is quite large and easily filled the page.

Would you recommend?
In principle yes - it was a very enjoyable activity for my 7 year old and letter writing is a bit of a novelty these days. The price would be the only thing that would put me off.

Is the price fair for the product?
Yes probably it is a fair price for a personalised product. Unfortunately I don’t think that people will pay it.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I was unfortunately quite underwhelmed by the letters.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He began writing back to one of them but just didn't believe the theory with the cat etc. He was more concerned that they knew the colour of sofa etc.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the premise, the aim to get children reading, writing, spending less time on screens and more quality time with family is great.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I didn't think there was enough to keep his attention, it wasn't engaging enough.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
No I wouldn't

Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I think the personalisation element comes across a bit creepy and hard to relate to. I think the interaction would be improved if it was just a person travelling the world and writing to them. I think it is expensive, but then the key aims of reading, writing, quality times etc are all things we do on a regular basis so didn't rely on the letters to drive it.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
I would rate the product and service as average.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My 5 year old was initially engaged with the letters but lost interest writing back.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I like the global aspect of this product, the idea presumably being to educate children about different countries. My child liked the map and stickers.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I think the letters could be better personalised, and could be more tailored to a child's age. The letter format may be somewhat dated in the age of social media.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
I wouldn't in the current format I'm afraid.
  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month.
Even at the reduced price, no I'm afraid. I would expect more interactive content for that price and better personalisation of the letters.

Maybe an occasional package/parcel full of souvenirs/memorabilia from the countries that Banjo would be visiting at the time would be even more exciting and educational,as well as have a greater surprise element.

It is a fair price for the product and the efforts that go into producing it.
