This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnet users who tested the personalised pen pal experience from Banjo Robinson the travelling cat, who helps boost creativity, reading and writing skills for their child/children.

Non-Tester? 90% of Mumsnet Tester's children wrote Banjo a reply and Banjo Robinson has now officially launched! They are offering 15% off full subscription charges with the code BanjoLovesMumsnet. This code is valid until 31/10/18.

Here’s what testers received:

  • An initial introduction pack which includes: a personalised letter introducing Banjo and his travels, a world map, stickers to track Banjo’s progress, personalised stickers to use creatively, a doodle sheet to colour, a reply page to draw and write their response, a reply envelope with postage stamp stickers.
  • A follow up letter from Banjo Robinson detailing his next stop in his travels including more goodies.

Here’s what Tree Climber Publishing have to say: “Banjo Robinson the cat is in India at the moment, checking out the Taj Mahal. He was at the pyramids last Tuesday, and next week he's off to the Great Wall of China. And while he’s away on his amazing travels, Banjo sends real, personalised letters to your child full of exciting tales all year round. Your child will get a world map and stickers to track Banjo’s progress and two personalised letters asking them to reply with pictures and messages.

Letters from Banjo Robinson encourage them to craft a reply, improving their writing skills and creativity. Parents can spend quality time with their children, away from tablets and TV, reading Banjo's letters, widening the child’s vocabulary, learning about different countries, and building communication skills."

Testers please answer the following questions:

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
  • What did you like most about the letters?
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Once subscribed, parents will be able to log on to their account and compose the closing paragraph of the next letter their child receives from Banjo, enabling them to address questions their child has asked, and creating an authentic back-and-forth correspondence between child and ‘cat’.’ A Banjo Robinson subscription was £7.90/month, however as a result of your feedback, Tree Climber has decided to price this offering at £5.35. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

All testers who leave the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Service was good. Letters arrived within expected time frame. The quality of the product is very good, I was impressed.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He was intrigued, but not overly enthusiastic. He found the letters a tad too long. Despite having a wonderful imagination, he didn't entirely believe a real cat was writing to him, so I misjudged that a bit! Also some of the personalised info (e.g. sofa colour) had changed in the time we waited for the product to launch. He didn't write back.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The stickers and activities went down well. The learning opportunity was great.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Slightly shorter letters, some small token like a badge for each country or something, he likes to collect stuff like that.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes, the idea is sound, just not entirely successful this time A few tweaks would make it more appealing.

  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month.

£5.35 is very reasonable. I would consider a subscription at this price, but not £7.90, so a great idea to change it.

- Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Very satisfied - my daughter (5) was massively excited to get a letter in the post for just her, and wrote back straight away.

- What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

The contents of the letter was less exciting to her than the pack that came to reply with (the stickers etc.) She enjoyed reading it, but didn't go back to it once read. She absolutely wrote back, immediately.

- What did you like most about the letters?

The personalised details were lovely.

- Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The back story definitely needs some work. I told her I'd met Banjo for lunch, as suggested, but no other details were given about him. She was very disbelieving at first, so I had to extrapolate a little and ended up inventing a human-sized talking cat who was a teaching assistant at a local school (she was very persistent wanting to know how I'd met him). This all fell apart a bit when she met another little boy who also turned out to be doing the test, and she was a bit disappointed to learn that she wasn't Banjo's only penpal. I had to change the subject before she quizzed him to find out if his mum also knew him as a result of Banjo being a teaching assistant. Blush

- Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes - for a child who loves reading and writing. I think for a 5 year old, whilst it was eminently readable, the geography details went over her head a bit, and she wasn't that interested in this perspective.

- ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I really like the idea of a parent being able to answer the child's questions, as this would definitely make it seem more real. For a company purporting to help a child's literacy, the correct spelling of "stationery" might be advisable. The revised price is definitely more in the ballpark of what we would pay. It would be nice if there were an activity too, that you could take photos of and send to Banjo (e.g. colouring, write about somewhere you have visited etc.)

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Very satisfied. The letters were well written and we liked the stickers and the map.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He was pleased to get post addressed to him and wrote back, but I think he was probably a bit old and cynical (at 8!) to believe the story.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the style in which they were written and the learning element.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Perhaps more personalisation would increase the “magic” factor, for want of a better word.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
I would recommend it to families with children younger than mine and feel the new price point is more realistic than the previous one.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
My son loved the initial pack with the map and was intrigued that a cat had actually written to him and not to his older sister.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My child loved the letters and has written back to him. He was a bit surprised how long it took to get a reply but helpfully his older sister pointed out that letters from other countries take a long time to arrive!
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I liked the chatty tone of the letters and I thought the length was about right. The detail of the colour of our sofa and the colour of my son's favourite neighbourhood cat really made him happy that Banjo knew things about him! It also helped him believe that his letters under the sofa were really being picked up by another cat. He had been a little dubious about this as he is more used to posting letters in a letterbox.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Increased personalisation will really enhance the product.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
I would recommend them as something a little different. The delay to the product test made this more relevant to my son than it would have been if the test had taken place at the original date. My DS is really getting to grips to writing and this is useful practice without it being actual homework. The map is also a useful introduction to some geography. He was more excited about the colouring in than I thought he would be. To an adult it doesn't look very exciting but again he bought into the idea that Banjo had drawn the pictures for him to colour in and liked them. The revised price of £5.35 is a much fairer price for the product. It is still quite expensive for what you actually receive compared with other products on the market - both children's magazines and arts and craft subscription boxes. However I like that it is different and encourages the act of writing physical letters.
Annazak · 17/09/2018 12:32

My son loved receiving the letters. The stickers and personalisation went down well. I think they could be improved by being a bit shorter so easier to read for younger children and by having more information/ pictures on the country Banjo is in. And perhaps a cheaper postcard version? I did this so my little one didn’t feel left out!

DandGMummy · 17/09/2018 12:37

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

It was OK but I was expecting something more. The letter felt a bit stilted and rambling - it didn't really teach anything but neither was it a story. So I was left wondering what it was trying to be.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He was excited to receive the first letter, with the poster, but was disappointed once he started to read the letter. He is a bright child and his knowledge of global geography is good, so he said he was expecting more facts about the two countries, and more of a story.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

He loved the stickers and that Banjo mentioned his cat and sofa,,, but he thought that "the person really writing the letter is trying to trick me, as he only mentioned Molly and our sofa in the P.S. and not in the story." (Sorry! I told you he was bright!!!)

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

More interesting, less patronising content in the letter. And some more pictures / holiday photos!

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

No

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

I was very satisfied with the letters and the service.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My daughter loved the letters from Banjo and wrote back straight away, but was a little impatient waiting for his reply!

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked the whole thing. My daughter was very engaged in this project and loved writing letters to him and learning about the different countries he was in too.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I think maybe having different ability levels would be a good idea as my younger two daughters aren’t at that age yet so felt a little left out. Also maybe weekly letters would be a good idea (maybe at a higher prescription rate) as my daughter was quite impatient waiting for his reply.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yeah I would recommend this to friends and family as my girls loved this test and we’ve signed up to hear about signing up in the future.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service? My daughter thought it was amazing getting her own post. I didn’t think the pack was overly interesting
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? Yes we wrote back both times
  • What did you like most about the letters? The fact it appears to my daughter and combined fun and learning
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? Just more to the pack, souvenirs and maybe a map which includes pins to where banjo has been and the pins are pinned to the map with each letter?
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Probably not

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Impressed with the personalisation and the stickers, maps etc. However I feel the letter needs to be more age appropriate as a lot of it went over my 7 year olds head. Short, sharp facts would be good.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He loved receiving the letters addressed to him and was in awe that Banjo knew so much about him. He didnt write back.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
The personalisation.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More age appropriate facts and short, sharp busts on info.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Unfortunately no.

Unfortunately I still feel the lower price is too steep for what you get.

Very satisfied, but the kid did realise it was not a real cat ..

As for the reply she drew pictures but was not keen on writing a reply, but I think if she believed in the character she might write a reply in the future.

Loved the idea of collecting stamps in the map, and learning a bit about other counties.

Yes would recommend it to others.. price I think £5 to be fair

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He loved it and he wrote back an adorable letter asking if when Banjo gets back he can come round to meet him.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
They were interesting and you added details to make it real for the kids.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Options to personalise more
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
overall i do unfortunately think it seems an overcomplicated if process. They letter was humerous in parts but too long so my son lost interest. I think 6 years old he was a little too old for the 'under the sofa' magic but if more simplified he would enjoy learning about different countries.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He was happy his cat was mentioned and interested in learning about the countries. However, he lost interest reading the letters and writing back
  • What did you like most about the letters?
I did like how they were personalised.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
Simplify the whole process, letters te children can read too.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
No. Do you think this is a fair price for the product? Not for what you get.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Overall I was satisfied although I felt more could be included

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters?
Daughter was excited to see the letters addressed to her and loved opening reading them.

Did they write back?
Yes she wrote back

  • What did you like most about the letters?
The information regarding the country
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
More personalized to have like an interaction with the child as she was aware that Banjo did not mention anything about her reply. Pictures to make it more interesting.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes I would

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

My son loves cats and loves learning about different countries. He was excited about both letters and enjoyed the activities, especially the map with stickers.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
He liked the letters a lot and he did write back, although he was a bit unsure what to write.
  • What did you like most about the letters? The personalised facts were good and my son is very suspicious of our cat passing on info to Banjo.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved? More country information would be good. And maybe some photos.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
Yes I would recommend them.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

He loved it, which makes me happy.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He took a bit of convincing that a cat could write a letter. But once he 'got it' he was really into it. He wrote back to one of the letters, been really busy so not done the second one yet.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The layout. It makes it more interesting for him to read.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

The price but I see this has been reduced.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family

Yes!

DS is now really into playing along. Whenever he sees a cat or dog he asks if they might know Banjo!

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
Very satisfied, both of mine absolutely loved getting them, my 6yr old was able to read them to her younger brother and they both loved doing the stickers and leaving letters for him.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

Yes, they both wrote back, and were completely caught up with the excitement that our cat was going to deliver the letters!

  • What did you like most about the letters?

They were great for reading practice for my 6yr old and it created a good amount of time the two of them cooperated, played and coloured together without arguing!

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

No

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes, definitely to those with children of similar ages.

  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

It’s definitley a better price than the original, but I do think it might be prohibitive if there’s more than one child. A sibling discount or joint letter would be a good option.

Sparklezz · 17/09/2018 13:43

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

Initially thought the idea was great, I am always trying to encourage my daughter who is 6 to read and write and learn about the world and so the concept sounded brilliant. When the package arrived the quality of the items was there. I thought there wasn't much to it on the whole though.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back? My daughter was first quite excited to get a letter addressed to her. The letter raised some questions from her which was good but she didn't stay interested for long. We read the letters and she wrote back to Banjo but by the time the second letter arrived she didn't actually bother replying and had lost interest. We looked at the map and the places Banjo could go and also the stickers.
  • What did you like most about the letters? I liked the quality of the items sent.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

I think the content could be improved, my little girl is quite visual and so the letter didn't hold her attention for that long. I think the addition of pictures or more drawings as well would be good.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? I don't think I would because it is a lot of money for what it is.
  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month. Do you think this is a fair price for the product?

I think the new price is still too much for what is actually offered. I think if there were more teaching elements to the subscription and if there was perhaps more hands on material for the price my daughter would have enjoyed it more.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

My son got very excited by the letter and scurried away with it. I didn’t get a look in! Which unfortunately meant I didn’t realise that he’d left a letter for ‘cat mail’ to collect.

The letters seemed interesting. I think my son was just a little too old. He didn’t get into the make believe aspect, he did enjoy the geography facts etc.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

I liked the look and feel, there was a good quality. I think the into letter wall chart and geography/country facts were my sons favourite bit.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Not particularly. It would of been useful to have a bit more idea of what parents were expected to join in with/pretend about. My son is old enough to read and write alone so I’d didn’t get chance to read it all before he’d sent his ‘cat mail’. He was very disappointed in our cat when he had failed in his post collection duties!

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Maybe, it would depend on the child. With mine he much preferred his Whizz Pop Bang subscription, though for a child that likes more imaginative play it would be great.

At the Lower price I think it’s a good price and comparable to other subscriptions of similar quality. I’d worry if I had more than one child wanting it though, that would start adding up quickly!

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
It was OK as a trial but not something I would pay for as it would be easy enough with decent IT skills to mock up a letter like that myself and then I could make it more personal and more suited to his reading and writing ability.
  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My son was very interested in the first letter and scribbled a few words in reply.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
Geography facts and giving children the motivation to write.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I think it should be possible to adjust by reading and writing ability.
  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?
No probably not, although for a child who loves to write and draw this would be nice. I dont think it will enthuse reluctant readers or writers though which is what I was hoping for. I agree with another reviewer who said insisting it was real but then not having somewhere to post a reply back to didn't really work.

Very satisfied, my daughter absolutely loved it. I'm a bit stuck now as we're very invested!

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
She was really excited. The quality of the letter was great. She wrote back immediately!
  • What did you like most about the letters?
The information about the countries and he stickers.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I wish we were testing the entire package. Seems a bit sneaky to get this far with your child and leave them hanging.

Yes I would.

  • Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?

They were good although he couldn't read them himself being 5!

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?

He loved it and loved that our cat Pudsey knew Banjo. He did write back yes.

  • What did you like most about the letters?

The stickers and how personalised they were.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Possibly more age appropriate for the younger audience, and also a way of encorporating the child's reply in the next letter from banjo.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Yes definitely

  • ‘Banjo Robinson sends personalised letters, personalised stickers, colouring-in activities and writing stationary from two new countries per month.

In a ideal world yes £5.35 is an ok price but in the world we live in know where finances are tight if it could be done cheaper I think there would a lot more people sign up for something like this.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
It is a lovely concept.

  • What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
Dd is just 9, she did like the letter, particularly the fact that our cat would be taking the letter back to Banjo.
  • What did you like most about the letters?
That Dd could write a response herself.
  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?

Letters could be more frequent, and a little more personal. There could be more room for the children to write and draw a response.

  • Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family?

Probably

Wanted to add after reading some other reviews.
My son is a really good reader and an option of differing reading difficulty rather than just simplifying it for all would be great. Those struggling now will be better readers the older they get so if it grows with you it would be fantastic. It really encouraged my 8yr old to write something. He hates writing as he cannot keep up with his vocabulary or millions of ideas. We have tried to keep make believe and magic alive in our house so he really enjoyed this. Whether he truly believed, who knows? I think he’s hedging his bets.
Having an idea of things like Cat Mail would help in case the letter is whizzed away.

Overall how satisfied were you with your child’s letters from Banjo Robinson and the service?
My daughter was beyond excited and enjoyed this a lot more than I even imagined. She told everybody, even face timed her nan abroad to tell her all about Banjo and all the places that he goes on holiday. I liked the personalised stickers, huge map and sticker which is now displayed on her bedroom wall and I love the fact that you can add personal details to the letter to make it more magical and believable.
What did your child think of Banjo Robinson’s letters? Did they write back?
My daughter loved them and wrote back straight away. She looked on Google to find out information on the rainforest to send Banjo which was great as it was educational learning about all the different animals and helped her drawing skills as she practiced drawing different animals to send to him too.
What did you like most about the letters?
I loved the map reading part of the letters, having to look for certain places in the world and the add the relevant sticker to it. This really helped my daughter learn about different places in the world and can now point them out on a map which she couldn't do before. I also love that they have to collect stickers to get a gift from banjo at the end.

  • Is there anything that you feel could be improved?
I do think that they need to be more frequent because the wait inbetween was torture for my daughter. She asked everyday why he hasn't wrote back and at one point thought something had happened to him and then that he just didn't want to write to her anymore. Also if you can add even more to make it more personalised I think it would make it even more special. Would you recommend the personalised letters to your friends and/or family? Defiantly!! I cannot wait to subscribe to this and I'm just waiting patiently for the email to arrive to get the ball rolling. I love the fact that it gets children away from the screen, helping them with there handwriting and spelling, there reading, learning the world, letter writing skills and her face when she gets post is priceless!!

Thanks for this opportunity and helping me find something that my daughter really enjoys and gets so much from .
