Find out how much Mumsnet testers saved with Carphone Warehouse’s new Energy Saver service

This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who have tested Carphone Warehouse’s new Energy Saver service, either by going in store or via their app (Energy Saver on iOS and Google Play).

Here’s what Carphone Warehouse has to say: “We’re famous for getting people a better mobile deal. And now we’re using our expertise to help you save on your energy bill. Switching your energy supplier may seem like a lot of work – but don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for.”

Testers, please answer the below questions:

  2. How much did you/ could you save?
  3. How easy did you find the service to use?
  4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

All selected testers who give their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where three MNers will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list). If you’re not a tester but you’d like to try the service out please feel free to do so. It’s useful to know who your energy supplier is and which tariff you’re on before you start, but the process should take just a few minutes (and the average saving is £273!)

  1. I used the app and not sure i'd ever pick going into store.
  2. I could have saved 46 pounds but have a 35 pound penalty to leave my current contract so the switch wasn't worth it.
  3. V easy to use - more user friendly than others i have tried.
  4. I would recommend it, yes.

I found I could save £46 per year. The supplier suggested had a poor customer rating so I didn’t bother switching.

  1. How easy did you find the service to use?

Extremely easy - a doddle to download, register and then enter a few details and up came the quotes.

Most definitely yes.

Definitely, I’m not keen on keeping the app as I don’t like having lots of apps but would download when needed

The app was really easy to use and seemed to only ask relevant questions unlike some similar services which ask everything but your shoe size.

It was very easy to navigate but a bit tricky to provide usage information (not possible to input monthly kWh usage). Also, the deals should provide a little bit more information about the company, rate details, etc.

Not really, apart from being an app, how different is it to uswitch etc? Seems really similar. I guess if I knew any older people who can't use the internet they could go in-store.

No, the saving it came up with was unrealistic. It's not an app I would like to keep on my phone; it's so much easier to go to uswitch or any of those comparison sites.

Yes - I like the fact that when the quotes come up you can look in detail at customer satisfaction ratings and other information about the supplier as I hadn’t heard of most of them.

came up as nothing as I am with Bulb who were the lowest provider - I am still glad I used the app as it made me confident I was with the cheapest provider.

I already have done the comparison for my sister and she has saved £240 by swapping, I am going to pass the details of the app to my colleagues at work too.

Yes

You MUST read the terms of the new energy supplier though.... The one with the best saving requires £240 payment upfront and then will adjust your DD.

App - on the website, rather than downloaded to a phone.

Apparently, £246 per year. I've used comparison sites before and the 'per unit' costs used to calculate savings were not right - on this app they seem to be, so it looks like it could be a real saving. I liked how it also warned I could face an exit fee (and showed how much) if I left my current supplier during the fixed period.

Very easy. The hardest part is always working out how much energy we use as it is never easy to find from bills and websites.

Possibly. The only downside is it doesn't appear to give suppliers a rating on their customer service - we've used some suppliers in the past who look cheaper, but they had problems and never helped resolve them, so the extra hassle wasn't worth saving a few quid for. If that can be included, too, it would make a big difference. Overall, a fairly easy tool to use.

I tried to use the app but didn’t get past the first page as my current energy supplier (One Select) wasn’t on the drop-down list of available supplier to select.

So I couldn’t find out how much money (if any) I could save.

  1. How easy did you find the service to use? Very easy and straightforward to use, tool only a couple of minutes I think, however the app crashed at the end of the detail input but when I opened the app back up my possible savings were there to view immediately so the details had saved.

Well, I don't my tariff, however, I know my monthly direct debit. When using the app, it estimated that my bill was twice the actual amount I pay. I think you need to know your tariff to receive a more accurate rate suggestion.
  1. How easy did you find the service to use?
Super easy and quick to use, with non-invasive questions. It would be great if you could submit how much your monthly direct debit is to get a quote comparison on that.

For ease of use, yes. However, I would advise that they know their actual current deal.

About £50 but the company that offered that had very bad reviews. I have actually decided to pay a fraction more to go with a renewable supplier.

Very easy. No problems with it.

Yes as it was easy to use, but in reality I don't think it offers anything much better than other more well known comparison sites.

I used the app and it calculated I could save £326 a year! It was easy to use and I’d recommend it to a friend. We are going to switch provider, based on the info given, so it was definitely a success for us.

Downloaded the app. Very easy to do and use; much more convenient than going into store! Found the app to be quite non invasive in terms of asking for information aswell which was a massive plus.

£778!! Although I did not change my provider as decided to do that through a cashback site instead....

Very easy. The app was impressive and I would definitely have changed using the app if it hadn't been for better 'benefits' through other sites....
