Non testers - for a chance to win your very own Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90), please share on this thread your best tips for reducing high temperatures in your small children - what works best at making them feel better quickest? Add your comment and you will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win one.

What is the Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90)?

"The smartest way to take care of the whole family
A temporal thermometer that accurately and easily measures temperature with automatic sync with the Nokia Thermo app.

Now a fast, effortless gesture yields accurate results and provides an automatic sync with the dedicated app. In app, you can track temperature readings, get reminders, and input related symptoms and medications for fever management advice right on your smartphone.

High Accuracy & Ultra-fast measurement
Thermo measures from the temporal artery considered an ideal place to detect temperature changes, as the blood that circulates there comes from the core of the body.
As Thermo sweeps across the forehead, 16 infrared sensors take over 4,000 measurements in a few seconds to find the hottest point.

Sanitary – non-invasive
Unlike traditional methods, Thermo avoids any contact with saliva, earwax or other body fluids — making it an extremely sanitary way to take one’s temperature.
Lights-off measurement allows a child to sleep while keeping tabs of fever.

Instant colour-coded feedback
Readings appear illuminated on the device along with a colour-coded LED indicator to tell you if the temperature is normal, elevated or high.

In-app fever management
The Thermo app allows to track the temperature of up to 8 users.
In addition to tracking temperature and symptoms, users can enter comments, medications, and even photos in any user profile. This helps to see if the treatment is effective and allows to have a complete history to share with a doctor."

Oh, would love to try it out :)

sarahw2 · 19/11/2017 23:10

Non tester - removing any heavy layers of clothing, a cool flannel, and some paracetamol.

Lydia30 · 20/11/2017 00:35

Non Tester - Just removing a layer of 2 of clothing can bring a temperature down, If not, give calpol and plenty of fluids, and allow the child to rest and sleep

robyn297 · 20/11/2017 00:42

Usually a story in just his nappy with a jumbo muslin covering him for comfort. He usually drifts off to sleep and wakes up a little cooler.

ipanda · 20/11/2017 02:57

Calpol works fairly fast & removing some clothing.

joannecc · 20/11/2017 06:22

If my little ones had a high temperature I would remove most clothes and use a damp sponge to cool them down whilst waiting for the paracetamol and / or nurofen to kick in. They usually feel much better once the temperature has reduced

cathryn1 · 20/11/2017 07:10

Calpol, loose fitting clothes

bex552 · 20/11/2017 07:29

Non tester - Lots of cuddles and alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen :)

myboycraig · 20/11/2017 07:57

remove tight fitting clothes, paracetamol and plenty fluids (water)

First I give Calpol then I give plenty of snuggles. Cwtching up watching Disney films all day really helps too :)

ikkle87 · 20/11/2017 13:21

We don't find calpol to be overly effective in reducing temperatures and as my son is haemophilliac we can't use ibuprofen but my son is prone to febrile seizures so it's important to reduce his temperature.

Ways we do this are to remove layers of clothing, sometimes stripping him down to just his underwear.

We have a fan which we put on a circulating movement at a low temp as you don't want to blow it directly on the child and make them cold but to cool the air around them is beneficial.

ChippyChips · 20/11/2017 16:54

I find a dose of calpol and loose fitting/ light clothing helps to reduce it quickly.

SpottyGecko · 20/11/2017 19:33

Non tester

  • calpol
  • strip down to vest / tshirt and cover with cellular blanket
  • sips of water

Sorry for being a little slow with my feedback!

How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
Very easy. Love the packaging, simple but nice quality. Installation was extrememly easy (and I'm not a whizz with technology!). It was quick with only a couple of steps (I find it off-putting when something comes with reams of instructions).

What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
I love the design, it's sleek and very very tactile. I also found it very simple to use (we have two other electronic thermometers and I find using them tricky as it's difficult in the dark and they are also quite beepy!).

How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
Extremely. It's small and lightweight, so easy to slip in your changebag/handbag.

In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
Mostly during the day, a couple of times at night with my youngest. My two eldest DC loved trying it out too, and it was easy enough for them to use. We've all been well during the trial except for my youngest who has had a stomach bug, so I've been keeping an eye on his temperature (it's not been raised but it was still useful to keep checking).

How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Very, it's clear and easy to read in the dark.

How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
I didn't really use this I'm afraid, it's not something that I'd find useful.

Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
I love the fact you can see a timeline of what their temperature was when. Being able to add what medication at what time is brilliant, no more trying to remember what time you gave them a dose of calpol and how long ago that was.

Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
No I haven't (and I have to admit I would previously have thought it was an unecessary gimmick but this trial has changed my mind!!).

What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
I prefer it, because it has a lot of advantages, but you can still just take a temperature and not assign it to a user (ie just have it flash up on the thermometer but not record it on the app), so it's the best of both worlds.

Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
I absolutely love it! If budget was not an issue then absolutely I would recommend it, but I have to admit that the price is quite hight, it is a lot of money to spend on a thermometer. I would also want to use it when my DC were actually ill to be able to ascertain how accurate the readings are.

CMOTDibbler · 21/11/2017 11:12

Non tester - regular medication, lots to drink (including ice lollies, jelly, and wet fruit like watermelon), and tepid baths

OpenMindedSceptic · 21/11/2017 15:42

Non tester - I would love to try this!
Tepid bath, light clothing and lots of fluid works wonders.

GimbleInTheWabe · 21/11/2017 17:57

Non tester here.

I’m a first time mum to my son who is almost 6 weeks old. Keeping him the right temperature has been a priority for me. I keep the window slightly open in our bedroom and have a room thermometer to make sure the room is between 18 and 20 degrees C. I always make sure he is dressed approximately as well and if his temperature was to rise I would amend his clothing and give him a feed too to get some liquid in him.

RockingDuck · 24/11/2017 11:21

non-tester

making drinks as attractive as possible with special cup/straw/type of juice
ice lollies
cool comfy clothes
watch out if they doze on you as that will make them hotter
calpol/ibuprof but watch dosages/timings

I have a nasty normal thermometer, but it doesn't seem super clean once it's been in a poorly mouth. I tried forehead strips but they didn't seem majorly accurate. Now I guess/use the back of my hand. My sister (a nurse) feels her kids' foreheads with her top lip! (hope she doesn't do that to her actual patients...I'll have to ask)

oatsandhoney · 24/11/2017 11:44

Sorry I'm slow with my feedback too! Although I think it does take a while to get used to the various functions. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to test this product. Smile

~How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
It's well packaged and the instructions are clear. Installing the app was very easy.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
It's very easy to use and looks good. I did find it quite heavy though as you have to grip the end of the thermometer beyond the screen display. But that's a minor point.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
Easy but it could do with a carry case as I found it got grubby easily and the marks showed up as the product is white.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
I tested it on everyone in the family. None of us had fevers during the trial period but it was useful to see just how healthy we were.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
It's very good to use at night as you don't have to turn the lights on and disturb sleeping children!

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
It isn't something I'd use regularly so not much use for us. I've noticed I've started getting weekly emails with information for this section that I wasn't aware would happen.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
The timeline of when you took a temperature is really useful and I'd imagine for regular medication it would be a good idea to track it using the app.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
I've never used one before so this was a new experience.

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
I like it and imagine if you have a child or other family member who is immune-compromised in some way it would be really useful. But for just checking a temperature every so often it doesn't really have a huge advantage over a traditional method. I wonder how useful it would be for checking temperature as a way of predicting ovulation, for example.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Yes I would for the reasons above.

kateandme · 24/11/2017 12:01

calming panic really helps.they will often be so het up so worried or fearful that they will soon be causing all temperatures and anxt to rise further.so soothing words.comfort, holding, storking and just lvoign them helps so much even at the most ill times.

soft cotton clothing too.

tillymint21 · 24/11/2017 14:32

Cool room, ice lolly and regular Calpol.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 24/11/2017 21:53

I have to be careful when it comes to temperatures. My little girl has a transplanted heart and temperatures are scary. For us it is to strip her to cool her down, we cannot use a cold flannel as she will go into shock. I will sit by an open window (only slightly or open the vent) and cradle her in my arms so her temperature will sync to mine. I will then give paracetamol because we need to keep her away from high temperatures as it could be very dangerous for her. Right now we use an ear thermometer, although the one we have isn't great but they aren't cheap, or we use an under the arm thermometer which she hates and makes her scream. she will be using thermometers a lot throughout her life and this one looks great but I couldn't afford that kind of money lol would love to win this and thank you for the opportunity.

suchnonsense · 26/11/2017 23:00

Sorry for being slow at providing my review. We were fortunate in not really needing to use a thermometer for a few weeks, but have had few bouts of furious teething recently resulting in a very hot and bothered toddler. Thank you for the opportunity to review!

  • How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
It was simple enough (although our patchy crappy wifi didn't help!), but took a while. I found it a bit annoying that you couldn't just start using it without setting up at least one family member online. Sometimes (or usually!) the option to have it as "just a thermometer" is fine!
  • What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
Our old thermometer was an in-ear one, so I love the fact that it's much more hygienic and doesn't require extra plastic caps (which I always worry about being a choke hazard). The connectivity is a nice extra, although probably a luxury! It was nice when the little one was a bit under the weather but I was at work, and I received an alert each time our nanny took her temperature - quite reassuring I guess and saved our nanny having to update me (although she did anyway!). With three children I can see how it'd be handy to use the different "allocation" if more than one was sick at the same time.
  • How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
Very - we took it on holiday and it was nice and small and light.
  • In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
For toddler (20 month old) who gets a fierce temperature when teething. Used at night and during the day.
  • How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
We're lucky in that our children sleep deeply and are undisturbed by light, so not really a benefit for us.
  • How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
Not really necessary.
  • Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
I can see how it can be useful to have a method of tracking temperature and medication, particularly with multiple children and caregivers. We tend to have scraps of paper all over the kitchen instead...
  • Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and which how did you find it?
No, didn't even know it was a "thing".
  • What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
I found the readings quite variable, which suggests that its tricky to get an accurate temperature. We don't have another thermometer (the last one broke) so I wasn't able to compare to check accuracy.
  • Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Probably not. I really like it, but it's quite expensive and I'm not sure that the benefits are good enough to justify the cost. Also, I remain unconvinced by the accuracy.
