We were asked by the team at Nokia to find 25 MNers to try their Smart Temporal Thermometer and report back for Mumsnet. Read on to see what they think!

Non testers - for a chance to win your very own Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90), please share on this thread your best tips for reducing high temperatures in your small children - what works best at making them feel better quickest? Add your comment and you will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win one.

What is the Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90)?

"The smartest way to take care of the whole family
A temporal thermometer that accurately and easily measures temperature with automatic sync with the Nokia Thermo app.

Now a fast, effortless gesture yields accurate results and provides an automatic sync with the dedicated app. In app, you can track temperature readings, get reminders, and input related symptoms and medications for fever management advice right on your smartphone.

High Accuracy & Ultra-fast measurement
Thermo measures from the temporal artery considered an ideal place to detect temperature changes, as the blood that circulates there comes from the core of the body.
As Thermo sweeps across the forehead, 16 infrared sensors take over 4,000 measurements in a few seconds to find the hottest point.

Sanitary – non-invasive
Unlike traditional methods, Thermo avoids any contact with saliva, earwax or other body fluids — making it an extremely sanitary way to take one’s temperature.
Lights-off measurement allows a child to sleep while keeping tabs of fever.

Instant colour-coded feedback
Readings appear illuminated on the device along with a colour-coded LED indicator to tell you if the temperature is normal, elevated or high.

In-app fever management
The Thermo app allows to track the temperature of up to 8 users.
In addition to tracking temperature and symptoms, users can enter comments, medications, and even photos in any user profile. This helps to see if the treatment is effective and allows to have a complete history to share with a doctor."

Meds help in our house. Ibuprofen is my preference.

Non tester.

buckley1983 · 08/11/2017 21:37

The best way I have found to soothe my LO when he has a high temp is to encourage plenty of fluids & put a cotton sheet over him rather than his usual bedding. It seems to settle him well. If he's wakeful - we'll usually watch something comforting on TV (The Snowman - tis the season for it now after all!) or listen to a gentle audiobook.

WonderLime · 09/11/2017 00:08

Non tester-

Paracetamol usually helps bring the core temperature down. In the meantime, I like the gently rub a cool, damn cloth over my little one as he finds it soothing.

ribtickler · 09/11/2017 02:05

I find a cool cloth on the forehead along with a fan in their room or a lukewarm bath a great help in cooling ill toddlers. Giving them plenty of fluids throughout the day and loads of cuddles also helps improve things.

dannydog1 · 09/11/2017 21:27

Cal poly, water little and often, light clothing and love

Sleepysausage · 09/11/2017 21:52

We use infant paracetamol to reduce temperatures in our little one

Marie1276 · 10/11/2017 05:10

Non testers : In case of high temperatures i always give my children a quick cool shower and especially letting the water run over the head, leave them without clothes or blankets, leave windows and doors opened in rooms for fresh air, give them ice lollies and plenty of fresh water, put cold compress on their forehead and body, also give some Paracetamol if the fever keeps rising and especially keep checking the temperatures with an acute thermometer. In worst situation bring my child to the GP or walk-in centre.Let the child have plenty of rest. And prepare to have nights without any sleep :)

Quietvoiceplease · 10/11/2017 06:46

Non tester
If fever is sufficiently elevated, then I used paractemol and ibruprofen.
Lots of fluids.

I was also told to cool the environment rather than directly cooling the child: sponging of a child or removing too much clothing can mean the body then tries to compensate which raises the temperature further. So cool the room, open windows, use a fan.

I also try not to panic. Fevers are a sign that our immune system is combatting an infection and working well. Respond to them, but don't fear that they are a terrible ailment in themselves. But of course seek medical help if prolonged and/or other medical symptoms exist).

BloodyWorried · 10/11/2017 07:44

Catching a temp early and giving infant paracetamol is the best way to make sure they aren’t too uncomfortable. If the temp doesn’t go down give paracetamol with ibuprofen (alternating what you give). My toddler likes to sit near me in a cool room but would rather not cuddle in, when he was a baby he’d scream and get really worked up and hotter - so we’d go to see my dad because he didn’t mind the crying and could comfort him (I just got worked up and found we would both cry and we’d end in a cycle where I’d want to cuddle him but that wasn’t what he wanted.

Pinklady1981 · 10/11/2017 10:52

Non Tester, mummy cuddles and lots of them. My 2 year old was recently ill with high temp, sore throat etc. He hates having his temperature taken as i have a Calpol one that you put in the ear. Next step is nurofen, lots of fluids and Vicks on the chest if he has a cold. Then sofa time with mummy!

Falconhoof1 · 10/11/2017 11:52

Non tester- paracetamol/ibuprofen and a cold cloth.

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

Really nicely packaged. The app was quick to install and easy to to set up / sync the thermometer.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

The LED display is great but I also love the over all shape/ feel of the thermometer, the Matt finish makes it feel more expensive that other plastic thermometers. It also has less joins/seams etc than other thermometers that could harbour germs and are hard to clean.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?

Very small and easy to carry around. I am a little concerned about losing the cap if it was in my bag so I might get some sort of pouch to store it in.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)

I tested it out on the whole family. I did try it when my daughter was sleeping and it read her temperature no problem. I used it in myself when I was feeling quite hot due to a cold but my temperature was in the green range.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?

I think this would be very useful. If your child has had a rough day/ night and has finally managed to fall asleep the last thing you want to do is wake them. The led display is great because it’s visible in the dark and as it vibrates rather than beeps there is also less risk of waking a sleeping child.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

I liked this and that it tracks the temperature with dates and times. It would be very useful should we need to visit the dr and share temperature results.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

I had a look at this part of the app but as I didn’t need to use it. I think it would be useful at the time when you or child has a fever.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

No my previous thermometer was an in ear one (nurofen if I remember correctly) that did not connect to an app.

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?

I really liked it. It’s very easy to track temperature and I like that you can take a few temperature readings and assign them later. It’s also much faster than traditional methods.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?

Yes I would so long as you are aware that the reading range will be slightly different from a traditional thermometer. I also think that’s it’s one of the best ways to measure temperature (my DR uses a forehead thermometer)

torthecatlady · 10/11/2017 13:12

Non tester here.

Depending on symptoms, we use calpol, hot drinks, general tlc (warm fluffy blankets, cuddles and a book) and a warm bubble bath.

CatRash · 10/11/2017 14:59

Non tester - paracetamol and cuddles

mrsbunnyw · 10/11/2017 16:27

Non-tester; I mostly use calpol and nurofen, but would try a tepid bath if that didn’t work.

Nikx85 · 10/11/2017 16:51

Non tester -paracetamol strip down with a cold flannel on head and wrists is how i cool my girls down.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/11/2017 17:46

Firstly, thank you for the opportunity to test the Nokia Thermo - I didn't know such things existed so it's great to be able to try out latest technology!

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

I'm basically a tech dinosaur, I'm ok when things have been set up and ready to go but the actual setting up and reading reams of unnecessarily long instructions etc I find tedious. I did put off opening the box for a day (I usually go much longer than that when un boxing new tech Grin ) and actually I was pleased at how simple it was - downloaded the app and it walked me through it - easy even for us dinosaurs Grin

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

It's quick and easy - press button, swipe, read (add to family members account if I wanted to with another couple of swipes), cap back on - done.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?

Mine just stayed at home but it being about the same size as a chunky stumpy carrot I can't imagine it would be difficult to pop in your handbag although I can't see myself going anywhere with an ill child who'd need their temperature monitoring that much other than a&e

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)

I tried the Nokia Thermo on myself, and my four dc 9yrs to 10 months. It's nice and quick for wiggly babies and stubborn toddlers! Easy to use at night, no fumbling about for those little forehead paper strip jobs and trying to hold my phone for light on my other hand.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Again, I didn't find the light too bright, if anything it was ideal as we have no lights on in any of the kids' rooms, just enough to see what I'm doing.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

I can see this becoming handy considering there's six of us! I've lost count the amount of times when our second eldest was really ill as a baby of having to go to a&e clutching bits of paper or the wall calendar with info on his health (he had an ongoing health issue so we're sadly regulars to our local a&e)

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

I had a browse but didn't need to use it but again I could see this being really useful for keeping track if you have a child with ongoing health issues.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

Never used one before the Nokia thermo - didn't even know such things existed!

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?

Brilliant! So much easier and quicker than potentially upsetting an already ill and upset child by having to hold them still to use a mouth, underarm or forehead strip thermometer. Plus it's accurate - no having to guess if the thermometer is showing as green/blue or tan Smile

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?

Yes but I must admit it is on the pricy side - most of the ear thermometers are about £35 - the Nokia is nearly three times the cost but then the functionality of it is unparalleled. When my second eldest was really ill as a baby I'd have bought this, it was such a stressful time that even having something like this would have helped. At the price it is I think it's going to be beyond most people's budget especially for how often it's going to be used, but for families where they are having to deal with ongoing health issues I can see this coming into its own. It's the type of thing I'd expect to see Heath professionals using.

if the temperature is high give paracetamol or ibuprofen, remove outer layers of clothing and leave them in light airy clothing, offer plenty of fluids, place a damp flannel on the forehead or neck, plenty of rest

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 10/11/2017 20:13

Tester.

How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

Unboxing was very easy nice package.

App easy to download once knew where to find it

Needed lots info to set up but once stored its there would be frustrating if purchased on the day for an ill child and then needed set up time.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

Small, light, non invasive and quick and means my 2yr old and 7yr old don't need to scream as if I am performing a major procedure as they do normally.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
Very, its compact fits in pocket of coat or in bag handy as parent of more than one child often a poorly child has to tag along on school run etc. Also handy to take away on holiday in case it was needed

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
Tested for purpose of this review when both boys were awake and then asleep and great so glad we now have this should either be unwell no screaming.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Good idea if you have a child who would wake with sloghest light personally didn't use

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

Really liked this feature

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

As a children nurse I knew this information but husband found v useful and would be useful if I wasn't around.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

No

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
I have used tympanic thermometers and traditional digital under arm and forehead strips all of which can have inaccuracies in measurement often due to user error, these all cause my children distress due to being invasive. This device is non invasive, quick and simple.

Yes it is expensive but no more so than tympanic thermometers when they first became available over the counter.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Yes I would and will be in my role as a maternity night nanny I think usefui
Piece of equipment for any new parent

I use paracetamol and swop bedding for a cool cotton sheet.
I also encourage them to drink more fluids.

This would have been a fantastic product for us when my daughter was younger as she has a brain injury and has trouble regulating her body temperature. I've always dreaded her getting a fever.

What does eventually bring her temperature down is a cool room, giving ibuprofen which is more effective than paracetamol in our experience and wearing a cotton nighty - there's so much polyester in nightwear now and it doesn't help at all.

bobblewobble · 11/11/2017 19:50

Non-tester - My oldest who is now 9 suffered from febrile convulsions, we found that stripping him down and having a fan in the room - but not pointed at him helped best for us. We always tried to lower temperature before resorting to medication but wasn't always possible.
My youngest who is 10 months old recently had a temp of 40.2 and ended up at the hospital. Paracetamol did nothing for his temp and we were advised to give regular ibuprofen, although this helped it did not completely lower his temperature. He keeps getting high temps, thankfully not that high but we are finding with him, a cool bath and opening the window has helped.
