We were asked by the team at Nokia to find 25 MNers to try their Smart Temporal Thermometer and report back for Mumsnet. Read on to see what they think!

Non testers - for a chance to win your very own Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90), please share on this thread your best tips for reducing high temperatures in your small children - what works best at making them feel better quickest? Add your comment and you will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win one.

What is the Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90)?

"The smartest way to take care of the whole family
A temporal thermometer that accurately and easily measures temperature with automatic sync with the Nokia Thermo app.

Now a fast, effortless gesture yields accurate results and provides an automatic sync with the dedicated app. In app, you can track temperature readings, get reminders, and input related symptoms and medications for fever management advice right on your smartphone.

High Accuracy & Ultra-fast measurement
Thermo measures from the temporal artery considered an ideal place to detect temperature changes, as the blood that circulates there comes from the core of the body.
As Thermo sweeps across the forehead, 16 infrared sensors take over 4,000 measurements in a few seconds to find the hottest point.

Sanitary – non-invasive
Unlike traditional methods, Thermo avoids any contact with saliva, earwax or other body fluids — making it an extremely sanitary way to take one’s temperature.
Lights-off measurement allows a child to sleep while keeping tabs of fever.

Instant colour-coded feedback
Readings appear illuminated on the device along with a colour-coded LED indicator to tell you if the temperature is normal, elevated or high.

In-app fever management
The Thermo app allows to track the temperature of up to 8 users.
In addition to tracking temperature and symptoms, users can enter comments, medications, and even photos in any user profile. This helps to see if the treatment is effective and allows to have a complete history to share with a doctor."

Calpol and if it doesn't work, Neurofen

Ibuprofen. My first baby was very late to get her first tooth- nearly a year old- and really suffered when it was coming through. It was the first really high temperature she had had and we had given her paracetamol which hadn't touched it. My neighbour, who was a nurse and had a child the same age, gave me a bottle of ibuprofen which I'd never used before and we couldn't believe how quickly it worked. Our rule now is: paracetamol for pain, ibuprofen for fever.

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

All very easy and simple to do

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

I like that it is no touch and you can set up different profiles for different family members with their details

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?

Its really light weight and compact and easily fits into a handbag - a carrying pouch or cover would be a great addition

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)

I used it on H (4) before and for a few days after she had her flu vaccination (nasal) and D (7) before and after his flu jab.

I also did a few spot checks in the night when they were sleeping (neither of them woke up)

I tried it out on myself - I had my flu jab so like with the kids before and after and also used it whilst I had an infection .

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Very useful - it was great to be able to take the kids temps without waking them up - so far neither of them have been poorly with a fever but if they had been the last thing you would want is to wake them up when they need their rest the most

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

Not hugely keen on this - being able to add separate family members was good but I dont think we really used it much and I cant see it being something we would continue to use really

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

We didnt really find it that useful to be honest - if the kids had been unwell and I had to give them some calpol or similar then i think it would be more useful but as neither of them needed it then we didnt really use it

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

No we have a basic in ear/mouth/armpit etc one which is electronic

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?

I like the ease of use, the fact it can be used as a stand alone or synched. I think being able to track data is really good and keeping a record is helpful as well so you can then take this with you to GP or hospital if needed.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?

It is a really handy piece of kit but it seems really expensive to me - if someone could get it on offer then I would definitely recommend it but I think at £75+ it's a bit expensive

Some final comments:

  1. Ours can sometimes be a bit unresponsive when turning it on
  1. When using the option to scroll to link the temperature to the name it would sometimes stick and be quite hard to scroll to the next name to select the right one. I only have 3 names on mine but could imagine if you did have 8 this would be a nightmare

Thanks for letting us try this :)

Letty7 · 12/11/2017 07:51

Non tester - calpol alone never lowered DDs high temps so alternate with nuerofen. Plenty of water, strip down to vest and pants and set up a bed on the sofa with the tv on. I try to turn it into a little adventure anf cheer her up as much as possible.

bestwayforward · 12/11/2017 11:36

I always found the best way to cool my kids down was to give them a cool flannel wash all over, we had lots of high temps with raging ear infections. Always did the job.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 12/11/2017 20:11

Non-tester.
I've found ibuprofen more effective than paracetamol for lowering a temperature in my DC. I make sure they're wearing something loose-fitting and don't cool down too quickly.

rachaelsit · 12/11/2017 20:37

Simply alternating calpol and ibuprofen!

EasterRobin · 12/11/2017 23:16

Non tester here. I use paracetamol (Calpol), one light, small layer of clothing (or a sheet), damp flannel, sips of water, and lots of distracting children's TV.

ErinSophia · 12/11/2017 23:31

Non Tester- Ice Cubes in every drink and thin layers that can be removed as necessary.

starlight36 · 13/11/2017 12:57

Non-tester Trying to keep little ones calm and happy stops them from being flustered and helps a bit. Sipping on a cold drink and removing a layer are other quick tips.

wobblywindows · 13/11/2017 17:36

Lavender essential oil diluted in tepid water. Wring out a flannel in the solution and apply to the forehead whilst child is resting / lying down. Take care not to get it in the eyes, obv.

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
Installation was fine, but it took me a while to get it connected and set up. I didn't like that it asked for height and weight before it would let you even take a temperature.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
I like that it doesn't have to go in an orifice. Pretty sure that's what my daughters like best, too.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
Haven't tried it, actually, but it seems pretty portable.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
Mostly just testing it out on myself and my two daughters. One had a fever one day, so I took her temp a few times that day.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Meh. It takes a lot more than a little light to wake up my kids generally.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
Nice to have an easy reference to their usual temperatures.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
Not particularly.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
No, I haven't.

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
A small amount of hassle (mostly connection setup). Nice to keep a record.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Sure, if the person had the money floating around. It's a bit pricey.

DuskPanda · 13/11/2017 19:32

Dose of calpol, undress down to nappy/underwear, cool flannel/cool bath and then being there with soothing words.

k8vincent · 13/11/2017 23:05

How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
It was well packaged, easy to open and inbox and pretty simple to install. Downloading the app was straightforward and setting up each family member didn't take too long. The instructions are clear.

What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
For me, how simple it is to take a temperature. No more faffing about with a forehead strip in the dark. And I can take a temperature when one of the kids is asleep.

How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
Very easy. Small size, a cap over the scanning end so it doesn't get grubby st the bottom of the bag. It seems quite robust.

In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
We've all used it (3 kids and 2 adults). We used it whilst out, at night and at home during the day. Twice when someone complained of feeling a bit unwell.

How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Very useful. See comment before. I don't have to rush out with the forehead strip before the reading fades, or wake up sleeping child to check temp.

How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
A nice feature, which is reassuring if you are concerned.

Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
Not as yet, but I can see how it might be, especially if I was worried.

Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
No.

What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
Far easier, provided you have the appropriate device to connect to.

Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?.
Definitely.

Non tester - it's a horrible thing to do, but really works. Wrap your child up in a damp towel. The whole body approach is more effective than just doing the forhead. My mum used to do it to us as kids. And I have used it on dd1 who gets really high fevers when she's ill.

MrRichTea · 14/11/2017 15:05

Calpol, Flanel

I find paracetamol to be very effective, if very warm then a cold flannel coupled with less layers!

Doubtfuldaphne · 14/11/2017 16:53

Non tester here - I’ve found that alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol works best and not to miss a dose as the temperature goes right up again. My dd has a history of getting very high temps (40+!) and she had febrile convulsions when she was younger. It was pretty scary. I was told that putting cold flannels on children as my mum did back in the day is no longer recommended as it causes boood vessels to do something weird. (That’s probably not the medical term!) also ice lollies help unless they’re too ill for those in which case it’s cold drinks.

tisha934 · 14/11/2017 17:32

non tester ...is something traditional in Romania for big fever ..we put socks with vinegar disolved with water ..

Rigbyroo · 15/11/2017 20:56

Non tester-cuddles and calpol

MrsSpa · 15/11/2017 20:57

Tester, many thanks for this product
How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download? I opened with the kids around which is always a challenge. I was flummoxed when I realised I had to set up the app for it to work at all, I thought I'd be able to use it without. But the app was straightforward to do, except the height and weights, which I just guessed at. So pleased that I was able to set it up despite the distractions and 'help'
~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.) Very smooth, solid feel. Nice look. Easy to use.
~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go? Very as it is small and sturdy and no disposable parts.
~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.) For all family members.
~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo? yes quite a good feature
~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members? it adds a layer which may be helpful. I'm a nurse so pretty confident in analysing the results so not so valuable for me but I think it might appeal to other parents.
~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you? As above, although the timeline may be helpful if you end up consulting a GP
~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it? No I have not come across one before.
~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods? For me it doesn't add a great deal of value due to my experience but I can see that for some parents the extra information and analysis and the time line would be a huge help and very reassuring.
~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo? yes

Halebeke425 · 16/11/2017 04:19

Non tester - a cold flannel on the forehead always works well!

NauticalDisaster · 16/11/2017 11:48

My best tips are:

  • strip child/baby down to a nappy/underwear
  • open windows if cooler outside than inside
  • give appropriate dosage of Calpol if child is uncomfortable
  • keep track of time you took temperature, what is was, if you gave medication, and how the child was feeling
  • seek medical advice/attention if the fever doesn't come down
