Add your comment and you will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win one.

What is the Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90)?

"The smartest way to take care of the whole family
A temporal thermometer that accurately and easily measures temperature with automatic sync with the Nokia Thermo app.

Now a fast, effortless gesture yields accurate results and provides an automatic sync with the dedicated app. In app, you can track temperature readings, get reminders, and input related symptoms and medications for fever management advice right on your smartphone.

High Accuracy & Ultra-fast measurement
Thermo measures from the temporal artery considered an ideal place to detect temperature changes, as the blood that circulates there comes from the core of the body.
As Thermo sweeps across the forehead, 16 infrared sensors take over 4,000 measurements in a few seconds to find the hottest point.

Sanitary – non-invasive
Unlike traditional methods, Thermo avoids any contact with saliva, earwax or other body fluids — making it an extremely sanitary way to take one’s temperature.
Lights-off measurement allows a child to sleep while keeping tabs of fever.

Instant colour-coded feedback
Readings appear illuminated on the device along with a colour-coded LED indicator to tell you if the temperature is normal, elevated or high.

In-app fever management
The Thermo app allows to track the temperature of up to 8 users.
In addition to tracking temperature and symptoms, users can enter comments, medications, and even photos in any user profile. This helps to see if the treatment is effective and allows to have a complete history to share with a doctor."

Non tester

For us it’s using paracetamol and ibuprofen and ensuring they don’t have too much bedding on.

sharond101 · 07/11/2017 12:32

Non-tester. Paracetamol and or ibuprofen. Cool clothes. Plenty of cold drinks. No hot baths. Cold flannel on forehead, moisten back of neck and soles of feet.

littlemonkeyz · 07/11/2017 12:44

Non - tester

I give my little boy Calpol to reduce his temperature and replace his duvet with a thin blanket.

julieef · 07/11/2017 12:49

Calpol and remove clothing, then if that fails a cool flannel on the forehead

julieef · 07/11/2017 12:50

malisa · 07/11/2017 12:58

Calpol and plenty of drinks. Keep them comfy without overheating body.
It's good to keep your child company ( give plenty of cuddles or read books)

Thanks for choosing me to test this. Here are my answers to the questions.

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

Nice packaging, looks very tech and professional. Everything was nicely packaged inside too, very tidy & straight forward.

The app was easy to download but I found it a bit of a faff to get going. It wanted to know info on height weight etc of every family member I entered - in all honest I have no idea of any of this! I don't really see a reason for having to enter such info either and feel there should be the option to bypass this or fill it in later. I wanted to play around with the thermo but got frustrated having to enter all this info first.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

I like the design, looks sleek and not scarey which I'd good for the kids.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?

I guess it's small enough to pop in a handbag or suitcase should you wish to take it with you. But I've never taken a regular thermo out with me so cannot really see a situation when I would need to take this one.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)

None of us was ill during the past few weeks so we just tested it out. I used it on all the family and was happy with the ease of use. My kids are 14, 8 & 2 and all enjoyed getting their temp done.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?

Didn't use this but am sure it would be helpful whilst taking a sick child's temp at night.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

It was OK, but I don't think I'd really use it. I'd more likely use the NHS website and common sense. If my child was poorly and I was worried I'd ring my GP.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

I didn't really use much of this and couldn't really see myself doing so in all honesty. I can imagine it would be reassuring to new parents. Helpful to the long term sick or those monitoring in their temperature (eg for ovulation)

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

Nope, but I found this one to be good. I'm sure it'll come in handy.

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?

Handy, but does the traditional thermo really need to be improved on?

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?

Undecided. It would be a little expensive for me personally as I don't think I would get enough out of it to justify the cost. Should I have a long term poorly family member or specifically following temperatures for some reason then yer I'd recommend it.

maisiesnan · 07/11/2017 13:20

Non tester Strip down to less or no clothes, Calpol, Cool flannel, cool fan , plenty to drink, ice lollies/ ice cream. These are all ways to cool a child down depending on the child's age.A cuddle with mummy/daddy is always comforting

becky004 · 07/11/2017 16:27

Non-tester, I give calpol for all fevers as parecetamol reduces temperatures.

UpOnDown · 07/11/2017 16:28

non-tester: paracetamol and ibuprofen, alternated.

Hairq · 07/11/2017 18:34

Non-tester.

Ibuprofen is the only that big that works to bring my child's temperature down when he's ill. I also give him a cotton quilt to sleep under rather than a duvet when he's unwell to stop him from over heating.

svalentine60 · 07/11/2017 19:19

A cool bath always works for mine.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 07/11/2017 19:33

Reduce layers, Calpol and ice pops. I find it a struggle getting them to drink when like that but an ice pop goes down no problem and helps with cooling, distracting and some fluids

jandoc · 07/11/2017 20:43

non tester
continually monitor temperature and if possible give pain killers

ladygoingGaga · 07/11/2017 21:34

Certainly paracetamol to reduce the temperature, and if in pain then I alternate with ibuprofen for maximum effect.
To help with symptoms my DS likes a fan with a cool cloth he can put on his forehead as required, works a treat as it doesn’t drastically drop his temperature like a cool bath would.

hanliying · 07/11/2017 21:43

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download? It was really nice packaging and definitely attractive design. Easy to unbox but not easy to use right away as need app installation
~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.) the design. It looks nice and feels safe.
~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go? It is quite small so def easy on the go
~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.) i tested temperature on my child
~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo? Yes that is helpful esp at night.
~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members? not easy to use as need a lot of info for set up
~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you? not really feels too complicated. We were lucky not sick at testing time but i can imagine if there's a sick child you just want to get the reading quickly w/o the fuss
~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it? No
~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods? To be honest i still like the traditional way to measure. My recommendation is that it is all good for the fancy function but it should at least think about adding a straight measure and tell w/o app.
~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo? probably not as it is really not very easy to use.

yoeydavis · 07/11/2017 22:07

plenty of fluids, some calpol, and something sweet

RTRBlog · 08/11/2017 09:59

NON TESTER

My children have autism and getting medication into them if difficult. I have been know to mix their paracetamol into orange juice and they cant taste it.
Also keep them cool, offer frequent baths and keep up their fluids.

Would love to win one of these, would be perfect for taking the kids temperatures

Pmliu · 08/11/2017 11:09

Non tester - remove all clothes & let my little one sleep in just her nappy, vest, tshirt or. Bodysuit depending what temperature she has.
I use 1 dose of Calpol & nerofen for children to bring down temperature & also put a cooling gel strip on her forehead

CopperPan · 08/11/2017 12:25

Non-tester - Ibuprofen works best with my dc, and a wet flannel on the forehead, frequently rinsed with cool water. They like to be covered with a sheet as it's lighter than a blanket but gives them a bit of comfort/coverage.

Hmumto3 · 08/11/2017 12:43

Non tester - sleep, lots of sleep is the best at making small children feel better and lots of cuddles

Sasstal67 · 08/11/2017 13:29

Non tester - When small, two of my 4 had febrile convulsions due to ear infections. I would undress and cover with a thin sheet if they needed a cover for comfort, give Calpol and a tepid bath. Now they're older I still really worry about high temps and keep a thermometer at hand.

WetDogLovesHubert · 08/11/2017 18:44

I'm a tester. I was really pleased to be able to test out this product as until now had generally relied upon a hand on head which is not helpful when you have a real sickness on your hands! Here are my thoughts.

~How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
Unboxing this was really fast and easy; no fiddling with wires, setting up the product etc. Other than an ancient thermometer this couldn't have been easier. Setting up the app took about a minute once I had downloaded, and this included inputting the details for me, my dh and my child.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
The design does resemble something less clinical, but it is clean, simple and easily understood - making it simple for all three of us to use. My dh and daughter both clamoured to try this out and enjoyed testing it out. The app picked up all our measurements really quickly and were assigned to each individual straight away using the swipe function on the device. 10/10!

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
I received this at my workplace and did test it out with colleagues before bringing it home. This gave me a chance to test the accuracy, and ease of use beyond the home. Thermo is really ergonomic - it fits nicely within my palm and weighs so little that it was no problem carrying it in my handbag. I imagine if I had to carry around with a sick child that this would be really easy, and comforting.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
As well as trialling in the office I also tested it out at night on my daughter. This didn't disturb her at all - being able to hover it close to her skin silently meant I could take several readings just to be sure each was reliable. This was simple, and brilliant in bring able to find out her temperature without disturbing her sleep at all. The lack of a sound response to measurements is a real bonus; haptic feedback really works in this circumstance.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Lights-off makes this even less invasive and easier to use.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
I didn't have any family health issues while testing this, but being able to see an overview and detail of past measurements provides a much more reliable method of reporting on temperature. If I'd had a real issue this wouls be invaluable at the doctors.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
The range of 'extras' on here, like the detailed measurements, makes this so versatile and helpful. I can imagine using this for doctor appointments to support a history.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
I had never used a connected thermometer before this, so this was a really fun experiment. I almost wanted one of us to get sick so I could trial a real life scenario!

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
This was a very positive experience; having the overview and detail on medicines etc. make this a more interactive and calming way of keeping an eye on my family's health. Being able to check when medicine had last been administered is a particularly helpful part of the app.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Definitely. This is such an all-encompassing app that it would be seriously helpful for monitoring health when issues arise. I have shown it to friends and family already.

TESTER FEEDBACK

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?
I was excited to receive the Thermo and the packaging was nice, much like opening a new mobile phone for the first time. The instructions were very basic and pretty much said 'download the app'. It was irritating having to do this first before being able to take a temperature and having to add each users weight/height/age.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
Ability to take temperature without touching, however not sure how accurate a reading this actually results in as there can be a large margin of user error (too close/far away/quick etc)

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
It's bigger than a normal thermometer, but small enough to put in handbag. Just watch it doesn't get mistaken for an adult toy, especially if you accidentally turn it on and it buzzes!

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
I used it on myself, my husband and toddler. None of us were sick during the test period.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
I'm not entirely sure what this feature is as can't see any instructions about it in the guide, not any settings to change on the thermometer itself. One thing I would feedback is that the two vibrations to let you know the temperature has been taken are VERY loud - even if there were no bright lights on and no beep, I think these vibrations next to my toddler's head would wake him!

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
If one of us is ill I suppose this feature would come into its own, particularly for our child being able to track history of temperature changes. It will also be useful for me as I have a medical condition which illness affects, so I'll be able to tally up the temperature readings with my management of my other condition.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
No, I can't ever imagine wanting to upload photos! Would potentially add medication notes but if my child is ill and I'm taking his temperature and giving medicine, chances are I don't have the time to be faffing about on my phone

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
No

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
It feels a bit gimmicky and just another thing that has been made 'smart' simply because it can be. Accuracy is the key with health related devices however, and I have doubts that the readings from the Thermo would be as consistent as an under-the-armpit thermometer.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Probably not; it's very expensive for a thermometer and I don't think the smart functionality is something that most people want/need/would pay for.
