Non testers - for a chance to win your very own Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90), please share on this thread your best tips for reducing high temperatures in your small children - what works best at making them feel better quickest? Add your comment and you will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win one.

What is the Nokia Smart Temporal Thermometer (RRP £90)?

"The smartest way to take care of the whole family
A temporal thermometer that accurately and easily measures temperature with automatic sync with the Nokia Thermo app.

Now a fast, effortless gesture yields accurate results and provides an automatic sync with the dedicated app. In app, you can track temperature readings, get reminders, and input related symptoms and medications for fever management advice right on your smartphone.

High Accuracy & Ultra-fast measurement
Thermo measures from the temporal artery considered an ideal place to detect temperature changes, as the blood that circulates there comes from the core of the body.
As Thermo sweeps across the forehead, 16 infrared sensors take over 4,000 measurements in a few seconds to find the hottest point.

Sanitary – non-invasive
Unlike traditional methods, Thermo avoids any contact with saliva, earwax or other body fluids — making it an extremely sanitary way to take one’s temperature.
Lights-off measurement allows a child to sleep while keeping tabs of fever.

Instant colour-coded feedback
Readings appear illuminated on the device along with a colour-coded LED indicator to tell you if the temperature is normal, elevated or high.

In-app fever management
The Thermo app allows to track the temperature of up to 8 users.
In addition to tracking temperature and symptoms, users can enter comments, medications, and even photos in any user profile. This helps to see if the treatment is effective and allows to have a complete history to share with a doctor."

Non tester, the only thing that we have found really works is a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol and keeping them stripped down to light loose layers

dul4hw · 06/11/2017 20:26

Lots of cuddles and a cool flannel.

SSCRASE123 · 06/11/2017 20:34

Ibuprofen and getting them stripped down works for us, always have them under a very light crochet blanket to stop them then getting a chill.

mummykate87 · 06/11/2017 20:38

I would say getting them into a cool room, running them a cool bath, putting them in just a vest and giving regular doses of baby paracetamol. Lots of love and attention makes all the difference.

Narnianescape · 06/11/2017 20:53

Paracetamol is the best tip I can give

stefalfie11 · 06/11/2017 21:17

Non tester - place a cold flannel on their head to help bring the temperature down and give paracetamol if that doesn't help.

pfcpompeysarah · 06/11/2017 21:29

Non tester - what works for my son is some Nurofen and a cool wet flannel on the forehead, as well as lots of cuddles!!

gamerwidow · 06/11/2017 21:33

Paracetamol and strip off as much is comfortable

BrawneLamia · 06/11/2017 21:40

Thank you for picking me to test this product

How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

I felt that there was quite a lot of packaging given the size of the thermometer. Installation was smooth although the app requested a lot of details such as everyone's height and weight. I did not know these details so I guessed them all, and I'm not sure what relevance everyone's height and weight have for the app, I would have thought it only needed to know the children's ages

What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

I really like that it can take temperatures so quickly and easily. My toddler hates having his temperature taken with a regular thermometer and it takes so long he normally wriggles away from me before I get a reading. With the Nokia Thermo, I could even take a child's temperature while they slept.

How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?

I'm sure it would be fine but I have never felt the need to take a thermometer out and about - if anyone was ill enough for me to be worried about their temperature I would stay at home.

In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)

I tested it on the whole family, taking multiple readings to test this out (including the cat!). I also used it when my daughter had a slightly raised temperature due to a virus. I also tried using it on myself first thing in the morning in an attempt to track body temperature to track ovulation, but this was not a success (see below)

How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?

I didn't use this

How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

The information was appropriate, although there wasn't anything which was new to me (although it might have been new to me before I had children, so for first-time parents of a newborn it may be more useful). To be honest I would probably use the NHS website instead as this would feel like the most reliable source of information. One thing I would definitely change is that the app recommends ibuprofen or 'acetaminophen' to reduce a fever - I had to google to find out what 'acetaminophen' was, and apparently it is another word for paracetamol. So please just call it paracetamol as everyone knows what this is!

Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

No one had a fever so I didn't test this out. I usually write medication doses in a notebook which works well enough for me.

Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

No I haven't

What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?

I'm afraid I didn't find it very accurate. Readings varied by several decimal points, even when taken within seconds of each other - for example 36.2, immediately followed by 36.8 . I wanted to use the thermometer to track my ovulation (through morning body temperatures), but the temperature change associated with this is only about 0.3 degrees, so this thermometer wasn't accurate enough. Such a shame, as it would be really helpful to be able to take my temperature more quickly in the mornings, as I am often woken by children who are impatient for me to get up straight away.
I also found it slightly annoying that it kept sending temperature readings to my phone, although this problem was mostly due to my non stop zapping of everyone, taking multiple temperatures when testing the thermometer out.

Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?

I'm afraid not as it isn't accurate enough. It is great that it can take temperatures so easily and quickly, but if I was spending this much money on a thermometer I would definitely want to be able to use it for all of my temperature-taking needs.

Non tester

Paracetamol to lower a high temp

freefan · 06/11/2017 22:20

Non-Tester:
I would strip my little one down to just pyjamas, no socks or vest with a cool cloth for wiping and some calpol, sips of a cool drinks and lots of cuddles.
Regular checking of temperature and if it wasn't settling I'd be on phone to doctor for reassurance

Sid98 · 06/11/2017 22:33

Non testers

Glass of cold water and take them into a cold room and put a wet tissue on their forehead

beckyinman · 06/11/2017 22:45

A bowl of ice water and get them to put their hands in up to the wrist. It cools them down quickly and then they can play with/ eat the ice cubes

lhlee62 · 06/11/2017 22:51

Non- tester- ibuprofen and/ or paracetamol and strip them off into their underwear. I also like to put a cold damp cloth on their forehead.

userinfinity · 06/11/2017 23:07

Non tester

A cool, damp cloth wherever they feel too warm - to absorb the heat.

Remove their vests and encourage to keep them drinking fluids

userinfinity · 06/11/2017 23:09

And calpol though that doesn't kick in straight away anyway so above points are usually always done

ggjacks · 06/11/2017 23:34

NON TESTER
Paracetamol and if particularly high and not coming down after an hour or so I add in ibuprofen. Strip down to light clothing and lots of drinks! I know more recent advice is to leave without medicine but my poor boy feels so ill with a temperature, I can't leave him like that!

del2929 · 07/11/2017 00:30

non tester-

best thing is to strip down to vest and have lots of cool drinks to bring temp down

angiehoggett · 07/11/2017 08:23

Non testers - Calpol is my go to for getting temperatures down, a good cuddle and their favourite does the trick as well!!

mo3733 · 07/11/2017 08:54

strip the child down to vest and pants and give them a lolly ice or ice pop to hydrate and cool

tallandlong · 07/11/2017 09:25

Non-Tester

Calpol (Paracetamol) and try make them sleep with light cotton sheet

Sammyislost · 07/11/2017 09:41

Non Tester

Some medicine, an ice lolly and thin loose fitting clothing. Looks like a fantastic thermometer!

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

The packaging was akin to opening a new iPhone product. Nice and techy with all the bits cradled in molded casing. Easy to open. Modern design

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)
It's a nice weight and size. Not too heavy or too small. I really liked the design.

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?
It's very portable. I used to use the forehead strip thermometers in my handbag but his was easy to locate and not too heavy to port.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)
I used it to scan everyone a couple of times on the first day in the excitement of opening it. My two year old helpfully developed a nasty fever during the testing period so I was able to keep track of that during proper illness. I used it on my kids when they were standing and when they were lying down.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?
Great, very useful.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?
I didn't find the app element as useful as I thought I would. It was rather alarmist, as in, directing me to see a doctor when my son was running a high temperature.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?
I think this feature may be of more benefit to those with long term or chronically ill people to look after. I didn't find it useful beyond the initial fascination of 'wow, look at all the things I 'could' do.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?
I've never used one and I really loved it.

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?
I've never gotten on well with other thermometers. I destest the forehead strip ones and kids never sit still for them. They loved having their heads scanned with mummy's head stick so it was so fast and easy to use. Loved it.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?
Yes I would recommend it with the caveats that it's a really expensive piece of kit (too expensive for me, I wouldn't buy it myself). Obviously I'm thrilled to have been selected to test it and will ditch any remaining forehead strips thermometers immediately!

Caillou · 07/11/2017 10:59

~ How did you experience the installation / unboxing of your product and app download?

The unboxing was fine, not too much packaging, just the right amount in my opinion.
The app download wasn't that straight forward as I first downloaded the Nokia health mate app before realising it wasn't the right one so I then downloaded the correct one, but then it might have been because I downloaded them before receiving the product as I was really keen.

~ What do you like best about your Nokia Thermo? (design, functionality, connectivity, etc.)

The best thing about the Nokia thermo is that you can record the temperature in the app and allocate it to the family member it correspond too, very useful with 3 children and a baby brain Smile

~ How easy is it to bring your Nokia Thermo on the go?

It is really easy, it fits perfectly in my handbag or the baby changing bag.

~ In what circumstances did you use your Nokia thermo? (at night, for baby, for yourself? Etc.)

None of us were ill during the trial, but I tried it on the kids (2yo and 6yo) both when they were awake and asleep, on ds (15 weeks) after he had his immunisations again both awake and asleep. As well as on dh and myself.

~ How useful is the lights-off measurement of the Nokia thermo?

It is brilliant when you are not willing to wake up the children but still make sure they are ok.

~ How do you like the in-App health overview for each of your family members?

It is fantastic, I love the fact that you can personalise it with a photo for each family member,
It took me a while to figure out how to change the units but once I did it was very straight forward.

~ Was in-app fever management with comments, medication and photos helpful to you?

None of us were ill, but if we were, I am sure I would find it useful and reassuring.

~ Have you used a connected thermometer before? Which one and how did you find it?

No I didn't, I used to use an ear thermometer (braun)

~ What is your experience of a connected temporal thermometer in comparison to traditional methods?

I find it works the same, yes sometimes the reading varies slightly, but I had the same issue previously with our ear thermometer,
But I do find the Nokia one much much better as it is a lot more versatile.

~ Would you recommend Nokia Thermo?

Yes I would and I already have to friends and family members.

Alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen and make sure they are in minimal clothing or just have a light blanket for comfort. A cools damp flannel on the forehead too.
