Who did you try the sun cream on? My 9 year old DD

Where did you go on holiday? UK beach holiday

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child? I was very confident, it was very thick and covered her skin and I could see it wouldn't wash off in a hurry

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
Factor 50 is my main concern, followed by waterproof, but price is also a major factor. I will buy a decent brand, but I will buy whatever is cheapest. For example , recently Ambre Solaire was £5 a bottle and also a spray which is easier to apply, so I have been buying that.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion? It was easy to apply, a little thick, but got it on ok. The fragrance was pretty much what you expect from sun lotion.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? I would buy it again, but only if it was BOGOF, as I think it is too expensive otherwise. However it is a very good sun cream, I have bought it in the past for water based holidays, but not for a long time due to the price.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 25/08/2017 15:58

Who did you try the sun cream on? Where did you go on holiday?
My DCs aged 4 and 7, however this arrived while we were in France, we have used it on a couple of sunny days since getting back.

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
Soltan is a trusted brand, so pretty confident! was a high enough factor.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
SPF, if its waterproof, how easy it is to apply, trusted brand and price.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
It did seem very thick compared to others we've used this year, and did need a bit more effort to rub in (make wriggly children stand still a bit longer). A spray version might make this a lot quicker to use.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
If they did a spray version, yes. A long lasting water resistant formula that doesn't make their skin itch and I can pick up in Boots when I'm walking past seems pretty handy.

SaltySeaBird · 25/08/2017 16:04

Who did you try the sun cream on?
My two children - aged 4 and 1

Where did you go on holiday?
Italy

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
Quite confident. I've used the Boots suncream before and like that it has a high UVA rating. I don't think I would leave it six hours between applications in very sunny destinations.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
That it has a high UVA rating, is water resistant and hypoallergenic - this ticked the box on all three accounts. I do have more than one sunscreen so I wouldn't use this for my face as for that I choose something lightweight and fragrance free.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
It was okay, I do find a spray can be easier and it was quite thick but did rub in very well. I had been using an Ambre Solaire one and it was comparable and a million times better than the awful Aldi one I brought in an emergency and binned the same day as it was so sticky it wouldn't rub in and just left white greasy stain marks on clothing.

It's my favourite fragrance for a suntan lotion as it reminds me of holidays as we have often brought the Soltan ones to take away with us.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
Yes as it ticks all the boxes for me. I would wait and buy it on an offer though. It worked very well, neither of my children had even the slightest hint of pink after full days in the sun and we only reapplied a few times through the day.

Falconhoof1 · 25/08/2017 16:05

Who did you try the sun cream on?
My 8 and 12 year olds and myself
Where did you go on holiday?
Benidorm
How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
A good brand so very confident
What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
High factor
What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
Quite thick but rubbed in well. Smell was very nice and light.
Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? Yes off but again as it worked well even though in and out of water. Also high protection.

ShowMeWhatYouGot · 25/08/2017 16:29

Who did you try the sun cream on?

Myself, my partner & our 2yo DS

Where did you go on holiday?

We are currently in Lanzarote, but have also used it in the sunny U.K. ;)

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?

Very, as soltan is a very well brand known for its 5* protection.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

It's important for my DS(2) to have a great suncream, as he lives outdoors. He has mild eczema so it has to gentle on his delicate skin, it needs to have the best possible 5* protection and if this is possible on a lower budget that is a plus.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?

All of us loved the fragrance, it's delicate and does fades after a few hours. The application was my absolute favourite, it's a very thick cream, which I love because I find it easy to feel any spots that I may have missed on my DS, most creams like this leave the skin feeling heavy and uncomfortable, but this absorbed into the skin leaving no residue.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes defiantly (especially as it's usually on offer!).

The second day of being in Lanzarote in 30+ weather, I used this on myself in the morning & forgot to reapply all day (I don't make a habit of this, but honestly was running around like a headless chicken!) I was in and out of the pool all day, and did not burn?

It's not making my DS skin flare up, and it's easy to rub in, so will defiantly re-purchase as our current suncream we use is £44 for 500ml!

Thank you so much for letting us try this product :)

oigetoffmycheese · 25/08/2017 16:43

Been in the med...40 degrees and v humid.

I need sun cream to be water resistant and easy to apply. Also not too stingy for the face.

This one worked really well. My husband liked it the best, saying it went on well and lasted.

Kids had no feelings against it and it went on easily.

Most importantly no one burnt...at all. We did reapply every few hours though.

Thanks

MummyBtothree · 25/08/2017 17:35
  1. I tested this sun cream on my 5yr old son & we were on holiday in the UK.
  2. I was very confident in the product offering sun protection because of the high factor & 5* USA protection which was excellent to see
  3. To me hight factor with good UVA protection is important when purchasing sun cream & also water resistant as we are all very fair haired & my son loves water play in the sunshine.
  4. I found this product very easy to apply, I loved the thick rich formula & liked the fragrance.
  5. Yes I would purchase this product again as it is a brand that I trust and after using it on my son for a few days it worked a treat - no sunburn and one happy little boy and mum. Thank you for the opportunity to take part Smile
Backhometothenorth · 25/08/2017 19:24

Where did you go on holiday? Cornwall
How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child? Very confident- trust the brand and like the selling points of this product
What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
SPF, ease of application, non-irritating and price
What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion? Very easy to apply and unnoticeable fragrance. Did not irritate our skin
Would you buy this sun protection again? Yes Why? Good all-round product of the price is right

Flamesparrow · 25/08/2017 20:31

Oooh this stuff is good. It was too "thick" feeling for DD1 (sensory issues), but fine on the rest of us.

Who did you try the sun cream on? Myself, three children (14,11,7) youngest with eczema, and DD'S friend.
Where did you go on holiday? Bournemouth, and the friend took it to Tenerife.
How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child? Very. It felt like it gave a thorough coating, and had very high SPF and UVA ratings.
What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
Both SPF and UVA protection levels
What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion? Went on easily, smelled pleasant. It was slightly too thick for the sensory child.
Would you buy this sun protection again?
Yes.
Why? I felt very confident with it. My children are very pale (ie one shade off blue), and one is prone to react to creams, and they could all use it without issue.

RunningKatie · 25/08/2017 20:42

Who did you try the sun cream on?
6 year old DD

Where did you go on holiday?
This arrived after our holiday so we have used it on day trips in sunny (!) Derbyshire, Rutland and South Yorkshire.

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
This applied well and is a recognised brand so I was happy that it should protect her. The summer in the UK has been somewhat less than amazing so I used the product as well as tshirts etc., rather than vest tops.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
A recognised brand that I trust, a product that is suitable for fair-skin but also suitable for eczema prone skin as my ds has this and I'd rather use one product on both dc rather than carrying about lots of bottles.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
It seemed quite thick, but it was easy to see where it had been applied so I was confident that dd was fully covered.
I did not notice a fragrance, so in that sense it was not overpowering or unpleasant.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
I'm not sure, it discoloured any fabric as it was applied - e.g. when reapplying at a splash park, I'm liberal with application and I noticed that dd's costume was discoloured as was my white top as I obviously got too close to her.

ThePug · 25/08/2017 20:51

Sadly mine arrived the day after we got back from holiday so haven't had a chance to test it. If the sun comes out over the bank holiday, we'll test it at home and report back but won't be able to comment on the waterproof resistance as not planning on doing any swimming!

Cadensofia1 · 25/08/2017 20:56

We have just got back from Turkey and I have to say this sun cream was fab never washed of in the sea and protected my kids from the sun .
The cream was easy to apply non greasy thick which made we think it was going to last .
Great fragrance absorbed very quick.
My daughter has senitive skin and it did nt irritate or leave a rash so I was super pleased. Kids where happy that they did nt have to wait long before they could go in water. I will definitely buy and use again
5* all the way

carolineandbaby · 26/08/2017 06:36

Who did you try the sun cream on?

9 year old step daughter, friends 7 month old baby and myself at 6 months pregnant.

Where did you go on holiday?

We did a staycation making the lost of our beach hut in Devon.

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?

Very confident. We had no burn issues.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

Ease of use - we have recently been using the sprays rather than creams as the are much quicker and easier to apply.
Reliable all day coverage - I want to know my child is safely protected all day but don't want to have to keep reapplying every hour.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?

For a cream it was easy to apply but very thick which meant a lot of rubbing in. I still like the sprays.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes as it was a high protection and water resistant.

catcatcatcat · 26/08/2017 08:23

Who did you try the sun cream on? Where did you go on holiday?

Me. DD1 who is 6 & DD2 who is 1 (almost 2). We went to cornwall for a week and also used the product at home too.

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?

We all burn very easily but had no problems with this product at all. It was a holiday in and out of the pool and sea where I do worry about sun cream, but it was all good.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

SPF, "all day long", water resistance & ease of application as my 6yo does not like wearing suncream.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?

Great, no problems at all. Quick and easy.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

I would. It was effective, easy to apply & did exactly what it was supposed to.

queenoftheschoolrun · 26/08/2017 10:14

Who did you try the sun cream on? Where did you go on holiday?

I tried this on my DD. We don't go on holiday until tomorrow so it's just been used in the UK until now. I'll report back if my answers change after the holiday but I'm confident it'll work well then too!

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?

Confident.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

I liked fact that this product lasts longer and in water. It will be great when we're away and also especially useful for school when DD has to put cream on before school to last the whole school day.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?

It was a little thick and sticky but absorbed well and DD liked the fragrance.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes, depending on price - because it lasts longer than most similar products.

aggga8 · 26/08/2017 10:47

WhosTakingDeHorseToFrance · 26/08/2017 11:36

Thanks Soltan and Mumsnet for including us in the trial.

Who did you try the sun cream on?
My Children 4,9 and my sisters kids 3,6 &8 when she forgot hers at the beach.

Where did you go on holiday?
UK and we were in North Africa too.

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
Completely, I have previous used the soltan brand and feel that it's a respected trustworthy brand.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
Something that my extremely fussy children will let me apply! Something that absorbs quickly and that doesn't feel sticky but offers good protection.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
Was really pleased with how quickly it absorbed, it wasn't too gunky and had a light pleasant fragrance.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
Yes, I thought it was easy to apply and the three hours protection when they were in and out of the pool/sea was great piece of mind. No burns or redness here despite being in some very hot sun.
My kids HATE having suncream applied because they say it's feels yuk, this was definitely a better experience.
My sister was also impressed with the consistency and how fast it absorbed.

primitivemom · 26/08/2017 14:13

Thankyou for the opportunity to try this cream! I used it on my two children, 12 &7. I thought it had a lovely fragrance, was not sticky or greasy and stayed on even in the water! We were on holiday in the uk even though it was lovely hot and sunny at times, and the children were in and out of the pool frequently. I would say this cream is one of the best i have used and i would definitley reccomend! I feel its very important to use a suncream with a high protection factorfrom a company that i trust, Boots Soltan did just that and i am a very happy mummy !!!!!

Astrongcoffee · 26/08/2017 16:22

Who did you try the sun cream on?
My 7 year old boy who can't usually wear factor 50 as clogs his skin

Where did you go on holiday?
UK - but will be taking to Gran Canaria

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?

They didn't burn and were playing in water so happy it works.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
That my son isn't allergic to it. We have previously had to use lower factors due to this. I also like it if they are water resistant.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?

It absorbs well, I like the fragrance. I don't like the colour or the stickiness.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why? I think so. I will make up my mind after our week in the sun (rather than not so warm UK) if it allows my boy to wear a higher factor without being allergic to it then I would buy it for him.

Seagullslanding · 26/08/2017 18:24

We are currently using this in Tenerife on our 4 and 7 year old daughters. I must say we are very impressed. My daughter s are very fair and prone to being sun sensitive. They have spent every morning for at least 2 hours playing in the pool with their very large inflatables. They haven't burnt at all. I can faintly see the lines from where their swim suits have been but that's it. No burning, no rash. We have been reapplying once after they have got out of the pool and that's it.

The product went on really easily, a lot easier than most children's cream. There isn't any overpowering smell.

We will definitely recommend and buy this product again. Even my husband rates it. I feel that I can really trust this product.

MoanaofMotunui · 26/08/2017 19:33

Who did you try the sun cream on?
DD aged 5yrs and DS aged 6weeks

Where did you go on holiday?
Spain, but tried in the U.K first

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
I really liked the idea of this sun cream as my DD's school does not help the children reapply sun cream throughout the day, so I was really excited to try a product which could be applied in the morning and then not need topping up all day. I found it worked very well at protecting both DCs skin. I can usually tell when sun cream is not working well for DD as her skin goes very flushed, however this did not happen with the Soltan.

However, we were quite disappointed with the colour as it stained their clothes terribly. DS was wearing a white top the first time we applied it properly (we used it for a patch test 48hours before a UK day out) and he spent the rest of the day looking like he had baby poo all over his clothes which I wasn't too happy about. It would be nice if he cream was white!!

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
The factor and the star rating. I didn't know, until this year, that the star rating on a sun cream bottle is just as important as the factor.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
It wasn't overly easy to apply. It was very stick and smeary which DD was not too happy with! We had to apply it in blobs and let body heat 'melt' it a little to make it easier to rub on to skin.

The fragrance was nice, but the colour and resulting stains were awful!

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
I'm really torn!! I think it's a brilliant concept, especially for school children who are not aided or reminded to reapply sun cream during the day, but it's really horrible waking round with yellow stains on your clothes!!

Intotheclouds · 26/08/2017 20:15

Who did you try the sun cream on?

DS's aged 3 and 9

Where did you go on holiday?

Wales

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?

I'm happy that it had a high spf and I trust the brand to be reliable

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?

Having a high factor and it soaks into the skin easily and not hard to spread around or leave a greasy residue.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?

I love the fragrance but did find it a bit thick to put on.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?

Yes, I liked the fact it was slightly coloured so you can easily see where the cream has and hasn't been applied.

BingBongBingBong · 26/08/2017 20:34

Who did you try the sun cream on and where did you go on holiday?
Tried it on my DD age 1 and DS age 3. Holiday location would rather not say but 2 hot places and 1 UK break!

How confident were you that this product provided the best sun protection for your child?
Pretty confident - it has great UVA rating.

What is important to you when choosing a sun protection product?
The star rating - this has 5 stars which is fab.

What did you think of the ease of application and the fragrance of the lotion?
Easy to apply (well as easy as it can be with 2 young children!) and not too strong of a fragrance.

Would you buy this sun protection again? Why?
Yes I would, it provided good protection for both of my children.

Thisoneorthatone · 26/08/2017 21:13

I used this on my DD 4, DS 3 and baby DS. I was confident in it, I love Soltan, it’s always been effective for me in the past.

I loathe applying suntan lotion but it is most important that it does protect my child, baby DS caught the sun a bit earlier this year which is a horrible feeling as a parent.

This was easy to apply but I wasn’t sure about the fruit smell. It did work well though, no burning or sun redness and it was reassuring in the water because of the consistency. It also wasn’t as greasy as other suntan lotions.

I probably wouldn’t buy this again. I wasn’t sure about the chalky colour on my pale family, it made them look a bit sickly and I did miss the reassuring blue of our normal brand. I also found the clay-like consistency a bit strange, I appreciate the non-stickiness but it felt like I was applying a layer of flesh coloured mud-mask to my children!
