We have been asked by Monqi, to find 20 MNers with a child aged 7-11 who hasn’t owned a mobile phone before, to test out their new smart phone, specifically developed for children. All parents also need to have their own smartphone, - to manage what their child does on their phone.

Monqi is a brand new mobile phone for kids which will launch on October 1st.

Here’s what Monqi had to say: “When should I buy my child a mobile phone? How do I keep them safe online? What about the costs? And what games are appropriate? Monqi is the revolutionary new mobile for kids which addresses parental concerns while giving children a phone they want. Monqi, Stay Close.”

If selected to take part, your child will get an Android smartphone with games, messaging, internet and Apps.

You will be sent the smartphone along with an active SIM card that includes the following - valid for one month from activation: 150 mins calls, 5000 texts and 1GB data. (note: if there is any “suspect” use eg international Calls, Premium Rate Calls etc, the SIM may get barred).

If selected, you and your child will need to test out the smartphone for 2 weeks making use of all of its features. Testers will have help and support from the mobile network during this time if needed.

Once the trial is over the SIM will be cancelled, but you will be able to keep the smartphone.

Selected testers will be required to leave feedback on a thread as well as completing a short survey. All who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list). This test will take place in September so please only apply if you’re around during this month and are able to give feedback then.

If you’d like to take part, please add your details here
We will be in touch with those selected.

Thanks and good luck!

My apologies, it's late, I mis-read the post. It's £150 OR monthly contract. But still, a lot of money for a first phone.

Amarjit2008 · 17/08/2017 00:58

Signed up for the study. Definitely a great opportunity for me as a parent with children who use mobile phones with internet access. Smile

delilahbucket · 17/08/2017 07:34

Signed up but actually hoping I don't get picked now. Not only for similar reasons as others, it wouldn't be fair to take it off DS, but also I've researched the company and if they cannot build a fully functioning and up to date mobile website then I wouldn't really trust they could do much else. The product is already on sale outside the UK so I don't understand why they cannot afford to do decent market research either. Unless of course, the product has flopped.

Dancinginthemidnight · 17/08/2017 07:39

I was about to sign up until I saw you have to send the phone back. That's too much hassle. What if they break or lose the phone? I don't want a massive bill at the end.

WelshMoth · 17/08/2017 08:12

Agree with others I'm afraid and I would be an ideal candidate.

Am looking at buying DD(11) her first phone in preparation for secondary school.

It's sounds more of a headache tbh. The next month will be a learning curve for DD and I which will be pointless if needing to start all over again with another phone.

Sorry MN!

PsychoPumpkin · 17/08/2017 08:26

You have to give it back? Yeah, I'm no longer interested. That seems a bit mean.

EllieMumsnet · 17/08/2017 09:25

Good update for everyone: Monqi have now decided that you CAN keep the phone after the two week testing period Grin !

I wonder what made them change their mind? Hmm

CarolinePenvenen · 17/08/2017 10:13

Have entered. I feel mean and grabby but it really wasn’t about that. Apart from the unfairness to the child and the possibility of forcing the parents into a purchase they aren’t able to make yet, the practicalities of going round getting contacts from school friends and setting up chats etc for a two week period just weren’t workable.

Scoleah · 17/08/2017 10:15

Wahay! Great stuff we get to keep it, DEFO would love to trial this now! Thanks MNHQ

CarolinePenvenen · 17/08/2017 10:17

And yes, huge thanks to Monqi for taking notice of the feedback. It’ll make a huge difference to the experience of those that are picked, even if it isn’t me!

starlingsintheslipstream · 17/08/2017 10:22

Common sense breaks out! Still not my sort of thing (ds2 is with us all the time so I can't imagine who he would need to phone!)

Good luck to all who are entering. I trust they will still honour the £300 voucher so that's quite good odds for the chosen MNers.

Dancinginthemidnight · 17/08/2017 10:45

That's great news. I have applied now.

Raahh · 17/08/2017 11:21

I have signed up for this but the auto fill function messed up my address. Will report my post with right details.

Soslowmo · 17/08/2017 11:43

I will sign up for this now. Phone use is a massive worry of mine and we have to carefully monitor our 13 year old with hers already.

Ds is 10 and would be getting a phone at the end of this school year, ready for secondary school. Hopefully the safety aspects of this phone will outweigh the dilemma of getting it too early.

Really not sure why this trial is for children aged 7-11 - can't be much call for children that young having smartphones! Confused

Butteredparsnip1ps · 17/08/2017 11:55

That's better - it would actually be good for us to test this as DD does a weekend activity, where it would be useful for to have a phone, but i have been reluctant to buy her one.

rupert23 · 17/08/2017 12:49

Thats good then i hope we get picked my son would love to try this as his older brothers all have phones.

ProseccoandPizza · 17/08/2017 13:10

Signed up now. I wasn't willing to give my son a longed for phone only to take it away etc. After seeing DSS's use of a mobile I was concerned about giving DS a phone with access to adult content.
Would love to trial use of a restricted content phone!

RomulanBattleBagel · 17/08/2017 13:45

Lost me at internet TBH. 7 is way too young for a personal device with internet IMHO, even with the parent being able to keep tabs on it

Theresnonamesleft · 17/08/2017 15:27

At least their quick change of mind shows they are already listening to feedback.
Of course I have signed up. Would have done anyway, he's used to me testing and sometimes the things have to go back. It would have given me an insight on whether he's ready for a smartphone.

outnumbered77 · 17/08/2017 18:29

That's great that they've listened to feedback already. I've attempted to sign up.

iamdivergent · 17/08/2017 19:05

It's good they've listened to feedback

nerysw · 17/08/2017 20:58

My daughter is 8 and asks me often when she'll be old enough to have a phone (like some of her friends) - it'd be a good test to see if she is ready.

4boysandonemore · 17/08/2017 21:20

My son would really enjoy this product test . He has been after a phone for a while now and I have put it off due to my concerns .
