We have been asked by Monqi, to find 20 MNers with a child aged 7-11 who hasn’t owned a mobile phone before, to test out their new smart phone, specifically developed for children. All parents also need to have their own smartphone, - to manage what their child does on their phone.

Monqi is a brand new mobile phone for kids which will launch on October 1st.

Here’s what Monqi had to say: “When should I buy my child a mobile phone? How do I keep them safe online? What about the costs? And what games are appropriate? Monqi is the revolutionary new mobile for kids which addresses parental concerns while giving children a phone they want. Monqi, Stay Close.”

If selected to take part, your child will get an Android smartphone with games, messaging, internet and Apps.

You will be sent the smartphone along with an active SIM card that includes the following - valid for one month from activation: 150 mins calls, 5000 texts and 1GB data. (note: if there is any “suspect” use eg international Calls, Premium Rate Calls etc, the SIM may get barred).

If selected, you and your child will need to test out the smartphone for 2 weeks making use of all of its features. Testers will have help and support from the mobile network during this time if needed.

Once the trial is over the SIM will be cancelled, but you will be able to keep the smartphone.

Selected testers will be required to leave feedback on a thread as well as completing a short survey. All who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list). This test will take place in September so please only apply if you’re around during this month and are able to give feedback then.

If you’d like to take part, please add your details here
We will be in touch with those selected.

Thanks and good luck!

Oh thanks!

Whyisitsodifficult · 31/08/2017 21:21

My son has asked for Goat Simulator, SnapChat.

Blatherskite · 31/08/2017 21:41

We both updated today so looking forward to seeing what's new tomorrow

outnumbered77 · 31/08/2017 22:00

We would like clash of clans

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 31/08/2017 22:09

I second Amazon Music and Skype as being required apps.

Have updated my iPhone but can't see how to update the Monqi phone. I've read the email but I've not received an update to be able to click install? Can anyone talk me through it?

Plus I asked before, what do we need to do to access the monthly paid apps? I'm sure I had email with details but can't find it.

Soslowmo · 31/08/2017 22:39

My son has been hoping to play 'geometry dash'!

outnumbered77 · 31/08/2017 22:40

There was an email with a username and password to enter pink.

And not sure about the monqi phone update - my son handed it to me as it seemed to be updating itself.

I'm really liking the locking feature (wish I could do that with older sons iPhone), but would find it easier to set the time I want it to unlock rather than the time period for which it's locked if that makes sense? I suppose both ways could be useful but I'm mainly using at night so want it to unlock at say 7am.

Soslowmo · 01/09/2017 08:26

I totally agree about wishing we could lock older teen's iphone. We currently take our teen's phone (and other gadgets) from her at 9.30pm - would make it so much easier if I could set the restrictions I want on it.

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 01/09/2017 10:34

Monqi have been in touch and sent the update again, so I have checked the phone and it is there this time, and it is installing it really fast.

I have had 2 emails today from MN and Monqi, very good efficient service.

Monqi have also resent the details required for the app login, so will give that a try.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 04/09/2017 17:59

Having had issues resolved by Monqi it seems ( no phone signal at all at home, yet we're in an urban area with no other issues with networks as far as we know. Outside home is fine). I'm impressed with their speed of reply.

Having used the phone quite a bit, I like it.
Most issues with phones these days seems to be related to social media and internet use. I've restricted DDs browser access and obviously no social media on the phone. These were my main worries about giving an almost 9 yr old a phone.
She loves texting her family and playing games. There's also a bit of kudos amongst peers! I also love that I can track where she is and call her if she's playing out. Just need to find a little rucksack type bag for her to carry it in.

I'd like to be able to set a certain time that the lock comes in rather than locking it at that moment. I'd also like to be able to drill into each app and set individual requirements like turn off at a certain time or only allow with wifi connection etc. But apart from that it's great. Although never had a geo fence location notification.

Also my texts come in silently but that might just be me. I expect now schools are back there will be less use in the week.

SequinsOnEverything · 05/09/2017 18:59

I can't get on the app at all today. It crashes whenever I try.

EllieMumsnet · 06/09/2017 09:14

Monqi have sent this message:

"Hi @SequinsOnEverything

Sorry to hear you had issues with your app. Please contact us directly on [email protected] or [email protected] and we can help you right away.

Great email from monqi. Ds will be delighted when I tell him he can now download geometry dash! 😬

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 07/09/2017 01:06

Yes, great email and great that Skype has been added.

Very happy to continue testing. Phone currently on charge as my daughter mislaid it and the battery died. Found it under the sofa!

Soslowmo · 07/09/2017 10:28

We're happy to continue testing too. Geometry dash was downloaded this morning and ds is very happy!

Mobile phone use is a big worry in our house and we physically take teen's mobile away at 9.30 - having this kind of phone with restrictions is great for early use.

Ds is only 10, so doesn't really have any need for a phone at the moment - none of his friends have phones, so his contacts are just family at the moment. By next year though, I'm sure this will be completely different!

Blatherskite · 07/09/2017 21:48

Did anyone get a phone call today? We're happy to continue testing too so I hope they call

RueDeWakening · 08/09/2017 11:31

Didn't get a phone call but happy to keep testing. Just had a letter home from school about year 6 being allowed to take mobiles in but have to be turned off on school premises, so might try that in the next week or two.

Blatherskite · 08/09/2017 13:42

He rang today. We're going to carry on testing :)

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 08/09/2017 18:16

Just another suggestion for an app, my daughter has a Go Henry card for pocket money and if she could download the child app for this, she could see her balance and tick of her 'to do' tasks to earn her money. Can't see it when I search the app store.

alibobins · 09/09/2017 21:23

On the overview it is still showing my son as being at the park when he is tucked up in bed. The battery died when he was out. Maybe this is something that needs looking into or maybe something showing the phone is off/ran out of battery.

OnMyShoulders · 10/09/2017 22:30

I'm not sure we ever got the update Confused. I updated the app at the time, but neither DS or I noticed any update happening on the phone. Is there somewhere in settings I can check?

Also, can DS access the premium apps if we don't use Facebook? I can't work out how to.

EllieMumsnet · 12/09/2017 09:29

Here is a message from Monqi:

"Hello Testers,

Thank you very much for all the recommendations on what apps to add to our store. Please, keep the suggestions coming.

A couple of direct responses to posts:

@OnMyShoulders: It is possible to see what version of the monqi software you have of the child phone. On the child's phone, please go to top right corner, click profile picture, At the very end of the screen is a version number. The latest version is 3.1.0 Build 154 Prod. if you have an earlier version than that please contact us on [email protected] and we can help you update. With regards to signing up to monqi jungle subscription (premium apps) no Facebook account is needed. We have provided a facebook log-in for mumsnet testers to use that will allow access to the subscription club. This will continue to be available to our beta advisors. However, it is possible to get access to the subscription wo. Just open monqi jungle>menu>join club and then follow the instructions.

@alibobins: I really like the suggestion of sending an alert when running out of battery. However, the challenge is that the phone may power down before a message can be sent. We are evaluating how else we can work around this. For now what we do is the following: On the top line on the dashboard where it reads latests activities you can see when the child was last active. Last active means when the child phone sent an update with a new activity or responded to an update request. We also show the latest battery status.

Please do feel free to contact us directly on [email protected] with any suggestions or issues you might have.

Best,

Frederik (founder of monqi) "
