We have been asked by Monqi, to find 20 MNers with a child aged 7-11 who hasn’t owned a mobile phone before, to test out their new smart phone, specifically developed for children. All parents also need to have their own smartphone, - to manage what their child does on their phone.

Monqi is a brand new mobile phone for kids which will launch on October 1st.

Here’s what Monqi had to say: “When should I buy my child a mobile phone? How do I keep them safe online? What about the costs? And what games are appropriate? Monqi is the revolutionary new mobile for kids which addresses parental concerns while giving children a phone they want. Monqi, Stay Close.”

If selected to take part, your child will get an Android smartphone with games, messaging, internet and Apps.

You will be sent the smartphone along with an active SIM card that includes the following - valid for one month from activation: 150 mins calls, 5000 texts and 1GB data. (note: if there is any “suspect” use eg international Calls, Premium Rate Calls etc, the SIM may get barred).

If selected, you and your child will need to test out the smartphone for 2 weeks making use of all of its features. Testers will have help and support from the mobile network during this time if needed.

Once the trial is over the SIM will be cancelled, but you will be able to keep the smartphone.

Selected testers will be required to leave feedback on a thread as well as completing a short survey. All who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list). This test will take place in September so please only apply if you’re around during this month and are able to give feedback then.

If you’d like to take part, please add your details here
We will be in touch with those selected.

Thanks and good luck!

Hi all, please find a message from Monqi below answering your questions:

"So far thank you for all the comments - very insightful and helpful. We have been following on the sidelines and have talked with a couple of you in person. In summary:

1. Emojis: They are there ;-) . Just long press the return key on the keyboard (lower right corner of the keyboard)

2. Lock on child phone: We fully agree this is an important feature so thank you for pointing it out. For now only the parent can lock the phone. We are in the process of creating a child activated lock-screen for the childphone with the ability for the parent to override it.

3. Contacts: We will ensure that these can be sorted, and a search function implemented. We will also make sure that the child can edit contact picture without parental approval

4. Feedback on monqi jungle:
App glitches: We are sorry to hear that some of the apps - like pokemon - go is not working. We will investigate and ensure that individual app glitches are not happening.

Available apps in the store: It is always a tradeoff when deciding what to put in the store. Some users want their children to have access to Whatsapp, Facebook etc other's don't. In the end however it is always up to you as parents to decide what is right and you can do so through your monqi app. If there are apps that you want to be included in the store please send us the names and if rights permit we will include them. If we permitted access to Google Play as an example there would be no filter what so ever on the content.

Subscription cost and fees: The price of 4.49 is for one month of downloads and there is a 2 week free trial. Not for one app. We will on our web-site create a full overview of what apps are available for free and which ones are part of the subscription club. I urge all of you to try the subscription club as there is really great content there.

If you have any questions please reach us at [email protected] or check out our support site at: monqi.zendesk.com"

Hi all

Monqi have asked us to share the below with you to help answer your queries:

"Thank you all for all your great feedback and insight!

Just a reminder that your DS/DD has their own SIM card meaning that they have their own phone number. All the information should be on the letter you received. If you are not sure of the number, please reach out directly to the monqi's Mumsnet Testers support email.

If you are getting logged out in the parent app on your iPhone, please make sure that you are updated to the latest version (you might get logged out after the update). If you are not receiving notifications, please make sure that they are permitted for the app on your Android or iPhone, and again please make sure you have the latest version.

Mumsnet Testing Task:
We'd like to ask you to test some features on the phone, and gauge your feedback on the usefulness. Today, we'd like you to test App Time Restrictions - this feature enables you to set the amount of time your DS/DD spends playing games. To learn how to do this, visit here. Looking forward to your feedback!

If you have any questions please reach us at [email protected] or check out our support site at: monqi.zendesk.com"

Hi everyone,

Here is an update from Monqi:

"Dear Mumsnet testers,

So clearly the biggest requests are proper notifications for new messages and accuracy of geolocation. For geolocation, we notice that the accuracy is fine for most users, so we will investigate why some are experiencing incorrect locations.

Another request was the selection of apps/games in monqi Jungle. There are several reasons why we opted not to include Google Play, such as the range of unfiltered (and potentially inappropriate) apps and credit card registration that opens up the risk of in-app purchases. However, considering your feedback, we are contemplating releasing Google Play on the monqi phone. We would like to hear your feedback if you are comfortable with letting DD/DS access Google Play, considering the fact that you can still Approve any app they download, as well as put any restrictions in place on that app. What are your thoughts?

Mumsnet Testing Task:
In case you haven’t already tested it, we’d like to hear your feedback on the Scheduling feature. You can allow/forbid SMSes, calls, apps for various timeframes such as School, Homework, Nighttime, etc. For more information on how to set it up, please visit: monqi.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000821811-Scheduling-tailor-the-profile-of-the-phone-for-e-g-school
As one tester noted, if you add several intervals please make sure you enter them chronologically, otherwise you will receive a message about overlapping times.

If you have any questions please reach us at [email protected] or check out our support site at: monqi.zendesk.com. "

Here is a message from Monqi:

"Hello Testers,

Thank you very much for all the recommendations on what apps to add to our store. Please, keep the suggestions coming.

A couple of direct responses to posts:

@OnMyShoulders: It is possible to see what version of the monqi software you have of the child phone. On the child's phone, please go to top right corner, click profile picture, At the very end of the screen is a version number. The latest version is 3.1.0 Build 154 Prod. if you have an earlier version than that please contact us on [email protected] and we can help you update. With regards to signing up to monqi jungle subscription (premium apps) no Facebook account is needed. We have provided a facebook log-in for mumsnet testers to use that will allow access to the subscription club. This will continue to be available to our beta advisors. However, it is possible to get access to the subscription wo. Just open monqi jungle>menu>join club and then follow the instructions.

@alibobins: I really like the suggestion of sending an alert when running out of battery. However, the challenge is that the phone may power down before a message can be sent. We are evaluating how else we can work around this. For now what we do is the following: On the top line on the dashboard where it reads latests activities you can see when the child was last active. Last active means when the child phone sent an update with a new activity or responded to an update request. We also show the latest battery status.

Please do feel free to contact us directly on [email protected] with any suggestions or issues you might have.

Best,

Frederik (founder of monqi) "
