JimJams have asked us to find 250 lucky Mumsnetters to test out their hazelnut chocolate spread. Testers will be sent one 350g jar of their 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread to try out with their family and will then be asked to leave feedback on a thread on Mumsnet.

Here’s what Kellie Bath, the co-founder of JimJams, had to say about the low-sugar treat: ‘As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are officially kinder to teeth (approved by The British Dental Health Foundation) and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO.’

For those of you with nut allergies and/or dairy intolerances in your family, please be aware that this product does contain nuts and milk, so it’s probably not for you (but keep an eye on our upcoming product tests for other options). Here is a link to the list of ingredients.

If you’d like to try JimJams, please enter your details here to sign up for the product test. If you’re selected, your jar will be with you soon and you’ll be required to leave some feedback on the thread on Mumsnet. All testers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

BeeFarseer · 19/07/2017 17:35

Ours is here! It was a Royal Mail delivery, if that helps anyone.

Scoleah · 19/07/2017 18:05

Fab thanks bee

BeeFarseer · 19/07/2017 18:15

Right, let's get to it.

First thoughts:

Nice, hefty jar. Feels good quality. The seal was paper when I was expecting foil, but I like shiny things and have been conditioned into liking foil, so don't read anything into that. It was sealed properly and the jar was nice and full with the spread.

I gave it a good swirl around with a knife and it was a smooth consistency throughout. No graininess, and very easy to swoop out.

First taste:

I tried it with a spoon (my preferred method of eating the leading brand of chocolate hazelnut spread). I could taste that it's made with sweeteners immediately, but that first taste vanished quickly and faded into delicious, chocolate hazelnut spread. I didn't taste the sweeteners again after that first try.

It's very light in your mouth and lacks that heavy, cloying feeling of other brands. If you've ever glued your mouth up with peanut butter, you'll know the feeling I mean. This doesn't have that, which I think is good.

However, I don't feel I could eat it by the spoonful. I'm undecided whether that's a positive or negative. Wink

Second taste:

We applied a nice thick layer to some crunchy toasted tiger bread. I didn't tell DS(7) that this was new spread. He tried some and said it was nice. Huge result, he's autistic with a massive sweet tooth and didn't notice it was different to our usual sugary spread!

DS(1) shoved it in his mouth and licked his hand clean, then tried to steal my portion off the plate. This happens with our usual spread, so I'm calling it a win.

I liked it better on the toast than I did on its own. It's still nice and light to eat, which means I could eat a lot of it. It would be lovely swirled through porridge with some chopped nuts.

I would definitely consider swapping our usual sugary brand for this.

I'm trying and failing to attach pictures, so I'll try in a separate post.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 19/07/2017 18:24

bee have MN sent out the testers question for the review?

MrsFigg · 19/07/2017 18:26

Initial thoughts as we've literally only tried it on a spoonGrin

MrsFigg · 19/07/2017 18:29

Oops!! Is that it's "very yummy" both my children said that exact sentence at the same time!!
They love it so far, my eldest (7) can tell it's less sugary so maybe the sweeteners? That's not a bad thing as she's not a huge fan of sweet things.
They can try it on toast tomorrow.
We also discussed the packaging. Thumbs up so far. It looks nice actually and eye catching.
Agree about the texture, not as thick to stick and glue your mouth.
So far so good, so far a hit!!

BeeFarseer · 19/07/2017 18:38

Not yet. I am very enthusiastic. Grin

MrsFigg · 19/07/2017 19:05

Me too!! Grin I will save my "proper " review for a week or so until we know we haven't had any adverse reactions to the sweeteners

Scoleah · 21/07/2017 09:47

Hope Mine comes today! We're having a film& Pj day so would be perfect timing lol

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 21/07/2017 11:20

Yay, ours arrived today.

I've just emailed jimjams to ask how many of the 49.4g of carbs come from maltitol, and how many from the cocoa and milk. My son has type1 diabetes and you only use 50% of the carbs from maltitol when calculating insulin doses, so its a bit tricky!

I was hoping that info would be on the label, since they are marketing this at people with diabetes.

And it still has palm oil in it Sad

Scoleah · 21/07/2017 11:51

Mine just arrived too, oooh it's delicious, I thought it might have had the nasty cheaply chocolate taste but it's Lush! Grin

lollylaus · 21/07/2017 11:53

Just received ours! Didn't realise we were testing until it came through the post. My daughter couldn't wait to try it and it's definitely a bit hit so far!!

Candyperfumegirl · 21/07/2017 15:03

We just got ours, bit of a surprise really as I never got an email to let us know we had be selected. Looking forward to testing it over the weekend.

ShelaghTurner · 21/07/2017 15:05

Still waiting...

MummyBtothree · 21/07/2017 17:36

Ours arrived today. Got to say, my first impressions are....it's ruddy delish!. I tried some on a spoon and had to stop myself. It's got a lovely consistency and no aftertaste (not that I've noticed). Might let the kids loose on it tomorrow Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/07/2017 21:41

What is the deadline on the feedback, please MNHQ? Would we have 14/15 days to try it? I'd like all of my DC to try it and they are on holiday at various times over the next fortnight but we could all have a go over a 15 day period.

poupee · 22/07/2017 19:22

Just received mine I am so excited to try it. We had waffles this afternoon and I blind tested on the family. They could tell the difference but they liked the Jim Jams. I can't believe it has less sugar but compared the ingredients to Nutella. Jim Jams has 8.7g of sugar compared to 56.8g per 100g in Nutella.
I feel healthier, I might have 5 times more waffles to compensate!

ShelaghTurner · 23/07/2017 12:34

It’s just arrived. DD2 (5) is so excited by the prospect that she wants to bring it to lunch and try it on her pancakes.... the downside being that we’re going to a Chinese restaurant and the pancakes will have crispy duck with them! Grin She is not to be deterred... Hmm

Feargalthecat · 23/07/2017 16:50

I've been on holiday so it was a lovely surprise when we got home to find we'd been chosen.

We all dived in with a spoon and were pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted. Could tell the difference between the leading brand but cannot believe how similar it tastes considering how much less sugar Jim Jams contains.

ShelaghTurner · 23/07/2017 20:12

It is lush! Sitting here dipping digestives into it. Haven’t even let the kids near it and not sure I will. It’s far too nice for them! Can’t fault it.
