Mind Candy asked us to recruit MNers with at least one DC aged 5-8 to test their new subscription service, containing fun Moshi-themed activities and games. The boxes work in conjunction with the Moshi Egg Hunt Mobile Game, which can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android. Selected testers were sent a letter from Moshlingologist Buster Bumblechops, enlisting their DCs to help in a quest to retrieve a special stolen egg. This was then followed up by the first in a series of Mystery Boxes, containing crafts and activities.

Here’s what Mind Candy have said about the product: ‘The experience begins when your DC receives an exciting personalised letter in the post, in which Buster Bumblechops explains that a very special Moshling egg has been stolen and that he’ll soon be sending a Moshi Mystery Box, jam-packed with clues, activities and missions. The first box contains fun art and craft activities, Moshi collectables, a comic strip, jokes and much more. And if you decide to sign up, there will be two more Moshi Mystery Boxes to follow.

A simple story runs across all three boxes, taking your child on a quest across Monstro City. Each box is also themed - box one is the Frostipop Glacier, two is Potion Ocean and three is all about the Gombala Gombala Jungle! The first box will also contain a pack of trading cards that can be scanned to unlock exclusive characters in the 100% free Moshi Monsters Egg Hunt Mobile Game!’

Testers - if you’ve been sent your mystery box, please leave your feedback on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw for a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Here are the questions Mind Candy would like you to answer:

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Thanks for taking part and good luck with the prize draw.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? My DD loved getting a letter that was addressed to her and with a lovely stamp! She wanted to know why it was her that had been chosen to find the egg and was really excited. When the box came she couldn't wait to open it. She kept pestering me to let her open it.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? She loved the tiny figures and yes is still playing with them.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? I've yet to do this as I try and limit screen time but I am planning to.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? I think the price is too expensive for what you get.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? Loved loved loved it. Personalisation is a great idea. She was instantly interested after seeing her name. She was a bit confused as to how to find the egg.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? Not very likely. I think the boxes are too expensive.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved? There definately needs to be an order in which to do things so the kids (and adults) know what they need to do and also, tell us how the egg was found and how did the kids contribute.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My daughter was so excited when she received the letter and box addressed to her! she couldn't wait to open the box.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
her favourite was the balloon experiment with the mini moshis
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
she wasn't really that interested in the game
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I personally think they are quite expensive for what you get!
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
She loved the whole experience, she completed the crafts in the box within the first day of receiving it. she took her cards to school and enjoyed showing them off to her friends.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I won't be subscribing for my daughter as its really expensive for what you get, maybe if it was cheaper id consider it
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Either lower the price or add more toys/crafts to the box so it's worth the £9.99 per box! Also add some sort of instructions or something as the initial thought when i looked at the contents of the box is it has no sense of order.
IckleWicklePumperNickle · 21/06/2017 21:35

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

He was very excited to receive a parcel in his name

Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

Definitely the little collectible

Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

We haven't had time to download it just yet, but can't wait.

These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

I would probably like some more collectibles for the price included.

What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box?
He loved it.

How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?*

Not likely at this time, as it's a bit pricey .

How do you think the experience could be improved?

To have the collectible in an egg or like a soft egg that dissolve in water.

Chocolateisnottheonlyfruit · 21/06/2017 22:27

-What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box ?

He was really excited about receiving post in the first place and even more when he opened it and saw what it was. I hadn't told him anything about it before he got the letter and he could not wait to see what was in the box too.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it ?

He shared some of the items with his brother, but he was keen to keep the cards for himself and the monster figure

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it ?'

We haven't downloaded the game yet, but will do so he can play it over the summer holidays

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

I think for the contents £9.99 is a bit much. It's not something I'd buy for him, but if he wanted it I'd put it on a birthday list maybe.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

He loved the mystery box and the fact that it was personalised to him made it really special. I think that was the best thing about it for him.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

I think it's unlikely, but I would suggest it as a gift item from another family member.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

The experience is really good and well put together - my son loved it and even wanted to share it with his brother (which is unheard of usually !). It's something a bit different which is great and if it was available as a gift option I think that would work well. I'm not sure I'd buy it as a parent, but if someone bought it for him I'd be delighted.

Celama · 21/06/2017 22:30
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

She was delighted to receive her letter which was very nicely decorated with its own special stamp. She loved that it was personalised to her and the style of writing inside and the letter created suspense over what would be in the box that would arrive "Next week". From the Monday onwards, she asked whether it had arrived but it took until the following Tuesday which was slightly disappointing. The box was colourful and tied in with the letter which she was really pleased with but she was a bit taken aback by the thin box as she had expected it to be shoebox sized like subscription boxes her brother had received previously.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

Definitely the mini moshlings which she is still playing with; the balloons were also very popular.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Yes, she downloaded it and really enjoyed it until her brother got hold of the iPad and hatched a moshling!

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Unfortunately, I think it is too expensive for what is in the box - the contents really are not worth that price. I would have said around£6.99, for £9.99 I would expect more content or a bigger/collectible Moshi.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

This was a hit. She was very excited to receive the letter and wait for the box. It was nice to see her happy about this.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

She is desperate for me to buy the next two boxes but I really am not sure about the price. In all honesty, I would say no but it is her birthday shortly and I think that would be the only way that I could justify it.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

I thought the contents might have been more related to the letter and box and was sure that she has to open the packages/read the sheets in a certain order as they would be clues but this turned out not to be the case which was slightly disappointing. I feel the box is really just an add on to the app rather than a box in its own right which is a shame. Good idea, appealing and popular but could be developed in a different way I think and it could be really good.

NormaSnickers · 21/06/2017 22:42

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was excited to receive a letter addressed to him but I think the week long wait for the box was too long for him, he was excited to begin with but definitly lost interest over the week.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He liked the cards but the Moshi figure was the biggest hit.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes, he seemed to really like it but hasn't played it for several days.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Way too expensive for what was provided. My son wasn't particularly interested in the egg activity, he quite liked the colouring and just blew the balloons up to play with. So it seems like a lot of money for a figure and a few trading cards, though I do appreciate that it was personalised and that went down well with my son.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
The letter was great, the wait for the box was too long and the craft activities didn't seem to me to link to the mystery DS was supposed to help solve.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not likely at the current price. Maybe if it was £9.99 for two, or even a couple of £ more. But despite initial excitement DS hasn't been bothered by the box since so, for me, it wouldn't be worth spending that much money.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Instructions could have been clearer, wait between letter and box could be shorter, and price of subsequent boxes definitely should be cheaper. Having said that, it was an enjoyable experience for my son and he really enjoyed the novelty of getting something through the post just for him.
leanneth · 21/06/2017 23:06
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

I hadn't mentioned anything at all so the initial letter was met with amazement and DS told anybody who would listen that he was expecting a parcel. He was very excited about it and told us that we had to keep a look out for "his parcel" and nobody else should open it!

When the box finally arrived, it was a Saturday afternoon so we didn't complete all activities in one weekend, but DS was eager to do more after school!

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

He enjoyed the frozen balloon activity best- although ours didn't freeze in 3 hours! The instructions didn't say how big it make the egg! We will do this activity again and make them smaller, he really enjoyed melting the eggs and checking on them!

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Yes we downloaded the game. After initial set up, DS (5) is able to navigate the game himself. He likes it!

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

It's too expensive. I certainly wouldn't walk into a shop and pay that much for them. I understand that a lot of the excitement was due to it being personalised and posted, but still think it's too much to spend on craft activities! Is perhaps stretch to £6 or £7 each, as a treat but don't think I could justify paying more than that.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

Overall, DS loved it. He loved getting a letter and then expecting and waiting for the parcel. He even told his headteacher about this! But I felt the contents weren't brilliant- it was all a bit higgledy piggledy and I had idea what was going on, how the activities linked to the game or the egg hunt- only the small note about the three part code on the letter. A covering letter for the box that featured a contents list or suggested order of doing activities would be good, although I understand children want to start on what takes their interest first! Perhaps a tick sheet that doubles up as a contents list? Plus an overview for parents would be good.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

I feel it is too expensive. DS has enjoyed it so I may consider buying another but really don't want to pay this much!

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Please see above, I've already mentioned improvements- also, better instructions i.e. How much water to fill onto egg!

Thanks mumsnet for letting us test this.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
I purposely didn't tell DD so that the letter was a complete surprise, she was so excited and really enjoyed reading it and then rereading it and showing it to all her family and school friends. She did get a little impatient whilst waiting for the box to arrive and the suspicions started where she thought I may have written the letter as it had a coffe cup print on it. Lol.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
She absolutely loves all of it, the favourite part was to freeze the eggs
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes and very good
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
As a one off it's not too bad but if this was to be a monthly subscription type box I think it's slightly high.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
she loved it
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I'm sure she would love it, would depend purely on cost
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Less time between letter and box More instructions and follow on letters in the box. If it's a subscription then postcards or further letters sent in the post to complement the experience, it's very exciting for the little ones to receive post The option to send or upload their pictures throughout their missions. Consider a price structure for example 12 month subscription £5.99, bimonthly boxes £7.99, one off £9.99
Backhometothenorth · 22/06/2017 09:42
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? She was so thrilled and intrigued when the letter arrived and very excited when the box arrived. She couldn't wait to see what was in it!
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? She loved the Moshi monster character, trading cards and activities. Yes still playing with them.
- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Yes we downloaded the game which was delightful. She loved naming her moshling and scanning the codes.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? Too expensive I'm afraid
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? She loved it!
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? I would definitely subscribe but not at that price. I am looking for a replacement for our toucan box subscription and this would be ideal... BUT toucan box is about £4 a month.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Think the concept is excellent. Reduce the price by providing just one activity and a toy in each box spread over more months.
fudgefeet · 22/06/2017 11:32

My daughter was over the moon when she received her personalised letter. She even took it to school for show and tell. She asked everyday if her parcel had arrived but unfortunately it never came. Luckily she has stopped asking and hopefully will forget about the whole thing. Very disappointing!

MTBMummy · 22/06/2017 12:30

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Very excited DD, she loved getting a letter addressed just to her, lots of squeals and a count down every day waiting for the box to arrive.

Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The mini monsters were a big hit, and in the hot weather the iced balloons have been good fun, we're about to do the painting activity, but she said she thinks it's a bit baby-ish (she's 7)

Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Not yet, it's been promised once her homework project is completed (Due Monday) so will add additional feedback once we've had a go

These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
That's very expensive! Especially as her magazines she tends to buy which include more than the box are £5 each

What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
She loved it, she said she felt very grown up getting her own post.

likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not for that price, it's prohibitively expensive.

How do you think the experience could be improved?
I think the activities could lend more to the hunt for the missing egg, DD spent a long time trying to figure out where the clues for the hunt were.

JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 22/06/2017 12:34

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Very excited about the letter. Was stalking the postman everyday. As soon as the box came, DS pulled everything out to have a good look.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He liked freezing the eggs, although there were 3 balloons and only 2 little figures and it said to put a couple in each balloon.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We did and he is enjoying the game. He loved scanning the cards but some didn't work, disappointingly.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Too expensive. I would have considered it at around £12 for two, but not £17.99.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He did love the experience of receiving a personalised letter and box.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Unlikely due to price.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
All cards to work when scanned. More crafty activities. More interaction between the box contents and the game.
Baldwin1973 · 22/06/2017 13:29

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

My daughter, who is 6, was very excited about getting a parcel through the post addressed to her so this bit was great. She opened the box straight away.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

She liked the little figures and played with them for an hour or so. She hasn't played with them since.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We haven't downloaded the mobile game but we will do this in te next few days.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

I think this is extremely expensive for what you get. I wouldn't pay anything like £9.99 for one of these boxes.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

She loved the personalisation but found the contents of the box quite confusing as did I. She hasn't used the cards yet and we haven't ha time to do the painting. I was really confused too about what we were meant to do with the contents of the box. I thought it might be something she could do on her own but it needed a gown up too. She hasn't played with any of this stuff since she got it.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

We are very unlikely to upgrade to a paid subscription but thanks for sending us this tester box.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Clearer instructions and perhaps a toy?

NotCitrus · 22/06/2017 14:09

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Letter - 5yo was excited to get a letter addressed to her but couldnt really understand it so I explained she should get a toy with a puzzle soon. 8yo with ASD didnt understand, hates Moshlings, screwed the letter up but eventially i got out of him that was because "I dont know what Moshlings even are". I pointed at the pictures and he conceded that they were quite cute and if he didnt like them then the school fair could have them.
After a week they had forgotten about the letter, which was just as well. 10 days between was rather too long given lack of info about what would be coming.

The boxes got very battered in the post but new toys always appreciated. Within minutes there was a fight over who had more cute Moshlings.

Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The Moshlings. They've been hatched about 3 times each now and taken out places.

Mobile game was too big to fit on my or DP's phones, but looks like the cards and link to the game are the main point of the box so will see if I can get it to work beforw the cards get destroyed.

Price - for three bits of plastic and a balloon and little else, it's a total rip-off and Ive seen better Christmas crackers - id go for a magazine over this. But if it's made clear it's some bits of stuff to go with a downloadable game so like say Skylanders for mobile, then it's not so bad i suppose - but that wasnt clear.

What did they think of the experience and personalisation?
A name on the box was all, i think? They were totally confused by the letter compared to the scattered bits from the box, and about the bit where you have to find the first bit of the code in the story, and then there's another page saying here are codes 1 and 2 and then theres one in ep 3. Its most unclear whether you have to pay for the app and other boxes - ds has convinced himself that two more boxes will be coming in the post...

It was only when i found a bit of paper given the shape codes for boxes 1 and 2 that i then could find the 'code' in the cartoon. Putting stuff in separate packets with numbers would have helped - i found salt sachets after they'd used kitchen salt to melt their first eggs.

The balloons and salt were good as freezing things in ice was perfect for this weather, but the other activities were less than an typical CBeebies mag for £2.99, wrapped up in the confusing story so i have no idea if we can get any more without spending lots of money.

I wouldnt upgrade to a paid subscription - a box like that would be good to buy in newsagents before long journeys, but it needs to be made clear that you're basically buying an app so a child without access to that would get very little out of it.

Crumble67 · 22/06/2017 14:27

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My son was intrigued and really excited to open it
Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
His favourite item was the Frozen Moshling Eggs-Cavation as he is really interested in how things freeze and likes to put cups of water in the freezer, so this was perfect for him
Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes, we downloaded the game and it has some good puzzles on there that are similar to other games that he plays, so I think it is good
These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think that this is too overpriced. Factoring in the postage I would still only pay between £5.99 and £6.99
What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He thought it was strange having his name on the box as normally it is only on birthday cards, but it makes it more personal. He liked the paper bags and couldn't wait to shake them out and see what was inside. I thought the instructions were very clear.
How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I think this would be for a special occasion rather than committing to a regular subscription so I wouldn't upgrade although if your child absolutely loved Moshi Monsters it could be worth it at a cheaper price
How do you think the experience could be improved?
We thought it would be more of a treasure hunt and related puzzles and clues would have their conclusion in each box which would be better and more rewarding an experience. The box looks good and the printing and quality of the paper and craft materials are pretty good. My son loves a wordsearch so that was good.

myrealfairy · 22/06/2017 15:58
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
When he had the first letter he was really pleased about getting a letter addressed to him, so that was a big plus for him and stirred his interest. When the box came he was excited to open it.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The cards were good for my son as he loves collecting cards.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes we downloaded the game and it was good. The music draws you in and it was interactive so that is something that holds my sons interest.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Pretty expensive for a box, something around £5 would be more realistic I think.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Loved it. He (and I) enjoyed the freezing the water in the balloon. That was something spot on for my son because it was about experimenting and water and balloons, great for him.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
It's a bit too expensive to be honest.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
A little cheaper. Some of the words used within the box were a bit too long and tongue twisters for the age range.
colinhewitt · 22/06/2017 17:57

Filled in by my DD as she wanted to fill in the feedback...

Q1. What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
A1. I was happy with my letter but was really excited for the box to arrive. When i opened the box, I looked at everything one at a time, taking my time with it.

Q2. Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
A2. I really liked the moshling and it was my favourite part of the box.
I played with it alot at first but not so much anymore.

Q3. Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
A3. Yes we downloaded it on the ipad and it is a great game! We still play it when possible.

Q4. These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
A4. From parents perspective, as our DD doesn't really understand how much that is worth, I find it a little expensive. It's nice that 2 are cheaper when bought as a bundle, but still would like it a little cheaper.

Q5. What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
A5. I like the way that the letters came in the post addressed to me and the box had my name on it, personalised for me.
The mystery box was awesome

Q6. How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
A6. From parents perspective, we would really like to do it - for both our girls (appropriate age as our DS is too young)

Q7. How do you think the experience could be improved?
A7. Maybe just some more suprises inside the box would be good.

FourEyesGood · 22/06/2017 18:22
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

DD (6) was very excited about the letter and took it to school to show her friends and teacher.
When the box arrived, she took all of the bits out and arranged them on her bedroom floor. Then she put them all back into the box.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

DD liked the balloons and mini moshlings; she loved doing the eggs-cavation activity.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

DD says the game is "absolutely perfect". She especially enjoys hatching the eggs and finding out which moshling is inside.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

That's absurdly expensive. The contents are very low in value.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

DD loved getting post addressed to her.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Highly unlikely, given the cost.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Ensure that the box arrives within 7 days of the letter; the letter said the box would arrive "next week" so DD was watching the letterbox from Monday onwards. The box finally arrived on the Saturday, by which time she'd lost quite a lot of momentum.

More toys would be better.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

He was so excited, he opened the box and read the letter, and was so happy as it was addressed to him! We did the experiments straight away.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

He loved the miniature figures, and is still playing with them.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Yes we downloaded the game, he's played the game each day after school this week, and hasn't got bored of it. He likes the graphics in the app. It was easy to download, and he understood what he needed to do in the app.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Really expensive for what you get I'm afraid. I wouldn't pay this I'm afraid, even though he did love the personalisation of the box and letter.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

He loved it. He loved the figures, the cards and the personal touch of the letter. And he loved trying out the app and doing the experiments.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Unlikely I'm afraid. Although the experiments were good, for what you get I don't think it's value for money.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Better instructions for the experiments, and perhaps a letter for parents explaining how they get to the end goal so we can guide them along the way. Also I think it would need to be cheaper or there would need to be more in the box to make it better value for money.

-What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

DD1 (7yo) was very excited and read through everything before starting any of the crafts.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

She like the frozen balloon and is still taking the penguin round with her.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

We finally downloaded it today and she doesn't seemed to be that keen on the actual game but loves the mini game apparently.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

A bit high, it only had two activities and I've seen similar boxes for £6, the £10 have 4 activities. My daughter is not a particular fan of moshlings although she does like cute creatures so it's not really worth paying an extra £4 for the brand.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

She absolutely loved the idea of the mystery box and really enjoyed getting post for her (although they already get personalised post from eBay etc so that bit wasn't such a big deal)

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Very unlikely, it's just too expensive and as previously stated, my daughter is not that into moshlings.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
There was a lot of uncertainty over when it was going to arrive.

Fudgefeet, MummyBtothree, and anyone else with a child who hasn't received their box -have you had any response from MN? I emailed them on Monday but have still not had a reply.

198 responses and I think I've only seen two saying they would definitely pay the £17.99 for the two boxes

I wonder if MindCandy will actually take this into consideration and reduce the cost Hmm

WindyWednesday · 22/06/2017 21:11

TBH I think they are stretching it a bit to say it's a "box". More like a large envelope to me.

However this has got me looking at other subscription boxes. Shame it was so expensive. I wonder if mindcandy will look at the price. Certainly seems MN has spoken.

- What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

DD (age 5) read her letter and straight away wrote a reply to Buster Bumblechops asking why he had chosen her to help him. She then stored the letter in her bedside table for safe keeping!

When the box arrived she again read all the material first. She really liked the poem on the box and the jokes. We've heard those jokes a lot this week. Grin Out of the items inside, she was most drawn to the little Moshling figure first of all.

- Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

The little red Moshling joined her collection of other Small Cute Things and has been incorporated into a few games. In fairness though she and her little sister actually are more enjoying pretending to be Moshlings themselves!

- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

We did, and DD seemed pleased but we haven't really ever played anything similar so don't have anything to compare it to. She particularly liked the ability to shop for her Moshling and decorate its house. In the app there is a link to follow to learn more about trading cards, including an opportunity to send off for free packets. I completed the form only to discover upon submitting that the form was closed to submissions! Seems a bit silly to make a feature of this offer in the Moshi Egg app shop if there is not even a chance to enter. Wasted our time on the form.

- These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Too expensive. If there were an extra activity/craft in the box this price would be slightly more palatable, but in all honesty I think I wouldn't want to pay more than £7 per box. I also for some reason thought testers would be given an opportunity to purchase the other two boxes in the series at a discount -- obviously I was mistaken?

- What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

DD1 really enjoyed the ice excavation activity and we will replicate this with some of our own toys another time. Whilst I think she was drawn to the Moshi Monsters world, I equally think her imagination can be captured by something a bit more affordable. I also think that the 'story' aspect of the box wasn't really in-depth enough which is a shame as for my DD this would have been the biggest draw for her.

- How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Unlikely at the stated price. If a discount code was offered to testers to bring it in line with other popular subscription boxes then I would consider it for this 'series' and see about further subscriptions in the future.

- How do you think the experience could be improved?

As above, a more reasonable price point, bigger range of activities and more emphasis on the 'story' element would make this really good fun for children.

I have taken some pictures of my DC enjoying the activities but I don't really want to publish them on MN -- happy to send them to Mind Candy if they want.
