This is the feedback thread for those MNers who tested ScreenLimit parental control app.

Here’s what ScreenLimit has to say about the app:

“ScreenLimit is a parental control app that allows parents to remotely manage their children's screen time from a smartphone, tablet or web browser on any computer.

It works on multiple devices, cross platform on Windows PCs and laptops along with iPhones, iPads, Android and Amazon devices (not Kindle Fire Kids Edition).

Parents can set a daily time allowance, instantly block access to sites, schedule times of the day when devices cannot be used, allow or block specific apps (not iOS), send their children direct messages and reward them for good behaviour. The innovative, built-in rewards function gives children the chance to earn ‘bonus’ screen time in exchange for completing tasks and household chores.

We’re a small team of dedicated parents with a mission to ensure children have a balanced childhood. If you have any issues we’re here to help and will respond quickly! Simply drop us an email at [email protected]

Testers: please answer the following questions:
• Do you think ScreenLimit could be useful for parents to manage screen time?
• How user-friendly did you find ScreenLimit?
• What did you think about the rewards system?
• What does ScreenLimit do really well?
• Are there any other features that you would like to see?

Please also add a review of the app in the Mumsnet reviews section

Everyone who leaves feedback on this thread and fills in the feedback survey will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £200 voucher from the store of your choice.

NON TESTERS If you’re not testing, but would like the chance to win a £200 voucher for the store of your choice, please answer the following question by sharing your reply in the feedback thread below:

Thanks! And Good Luck with the prize draw!

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear raspberryfluff,

Thanks for your comment.

With ScreenLimit you can do exactly what you're asking - if you time the YouTube and Silk Browser (in case they use the YouTube website) apps and then define all the other apps as unlimited. Alternatively you can simply block the YouTube app altogether.

Download the app on your device and your child's kindle, pair them together and join our FREE trial.

If you have any issues with the set up, email me at [email protected] and I will guide you through the process.

Thanks,

Jeremy Drayton.
CEO ScreenLimit"

The most used App has to be YouTube. They watch all those stupid blog videos

Sleepysausage · 06/06/2017 19:43

Non tester ...
The most used app in our house is probably the BBC Iplayer to watch Bing.

Tester
•Do you think ScreenLimit could be useful for parents to manage screen time?
Yes, the concept is a good one and that is why I wanted to try it. It's easier for small chunks of screen time to add up over the course of the day and I would like my children, especially the older one, to have some limits.
•How user-friendly did you find ScreenLimit?
Not very. I didn't realise when I set it up that it works better with a control device and a child's device. I particularly wanted to be able to set limits on my phone for when we are away from home. I eventually did manage to work it out, but you do need to keep entering the pin to not be blocked yourself. It was also really complicated and not that intuitive. I didn't test all of the features with my child because I found it quite annoying.
•What did you think about the rewards system?
It's a good idea, but again it was quite complicated in practise to set up.
•What does ScreenLimit do really well?
I'm not sure it does anything really well - it's a good idea but it's quite frustrating to use and it also frequently crashed for me and I eventually got fed up with it. If I had downloaded it to try out normally I would have deleted it.
•Are there any other features that you would like to see?
A set-up guide (e.g. video tutorial) - I tried the help pages but they were very long winded and I got lost trying to find what I was looking for. Also, it rearranges the apps on an iPhone after it's been in 'child' mode. This alone is a reason why I wouldn't use it.

So many apps get used at our house! YouTube being the mist followed by Facebook!!

I'm a tester.

•Do you think ScreenLimit could be useful for parents to manage screen time? Yes, I think it's very effective, a great idea.

•How user-friendly did you find ScreenLimit? I thought it was very straightforward and intuitive to use, very well designed.

•What did you think about the rewards system? I was particularly impressed with this feature, made it easier to introduce changes in the amount of time my daughter used her iPad by making her view this time as a treat rather than something she can do for hours.

•What does ScreenLimit do really well? Design - the app is clear, easy to use and this is what makes it so effective.

•Are there any other features that you would like to see? I can't think of anything additional - it had everything I would expect.

Non tester - Youtube and Roblox

rosel27 · 07/06/2017 16:14

What app is the most used/misused by your children?

Definitely YouTube. DSS is glued to it. Minecraft videos and stupid stunt videos usually. We have parental controls on it but I often worry about what could slip through the net

lnice · 07/06/2017 16:41

Non tester - You tube, its never off my phone or tablet

likeawestern · 07/06/2017 19:32

•Do you think ScreenLimit could be useful for parents to manage screen time?
I found it very useful. Like others have said, you allow a set amount of screen time and then get distracted by life and the cheeky monkeys sneak more.

•How user-friendly did you find ScreenLimit?
I found it tricky to start with but then my 13 year old showed me how to use it - he found it very user friendly!

•What did you think about the rewards system?
I often reward good behaviour with an extra 10 or 15 minutes so really liked this feature.

•What does ScreenLimit do really well?
It's fast. Children sat next to each other arguing about minecraft, quick flick of two buttons and their apps all disappear. No question why with the speed.

•Are there any other features that you would like to see?
My son uses his iPad for school so I had to put him on unlimited every day so he could do his work - I would have liked to be able to limit his gaming apps but allow access to his school ones.
Not alphabetise the apps. We're all a bit confused about where everything is now!

Dianeayr · 07/06/2017 20:35

Non tester - You tube, there is a lot of good stuff on there, I use it myself but there is also a lot of rubbish and stuff that I really don't think kids should be seeing.

jandoc · 07/06/2017 21:03

non tester. he doesn't have a favourite yet

Anj123 · 07/06/2017 21:51

Non tester. You Tube, my daughter watches lots of videos on this. I try to keep an eye on what she's watching but it's impossible to do this all the time. I have spoken to her and warned her there is some stuff that is inappropriate. I don't think she would deliberately set out to watch something inappropriate but am concerned that she might accidentally stumble across something.

tdm1 · 08/06/2017 10:48

Non-tester - definitely youtube is the most used app

Liked the idea, especially as my teens constantly wind one another up and then complain that their sibling wasted their time - hoped app would stop this.
Found it complicated to set up with multiple devices - gave up in the end.
Like idea of rewards system, but don't know how it would work in practice as never got that far!

ChasedByBees · 08/06/2017 20:37

My DD most often uses the iPlayer for kids app. I'm quite happy with this as I can trust it won't be inappropriate. She also likes YouTube but then I have to watch it like a hawk to make sure nothing dodgy comes on.

Dixiestamp · 08/06/2017 23:36

Have you tried YouTube Kids, Chased?

lexy2009 · 09/06/2017 00:21

Without a doubt YouTube

ChasedByBees · 09/06/2017 00:44

Ooh no Dixie! Must look at that, thanks!
