This is the feedback thread for those MNers who tested ScreenLimit parental control app.

Here’s what ScreenLimit has to say about the app:

“ScreenLimit is a parental control app that allows parents to remotely manage their children's screen time from a smartphone, tablet or web browser on any computer.

It works on multiple devices, cross platform on Windows PCs and laptops along with iPhones, iPads, Android and Amazon devices (not Kindle Fire Kids Edition).

Parents can set a daily time allowance, instantly block access to sites, schedule times of the day when devices cannot be used, allow or block specific apps (not iOS), send their children direct messages and reward them for good behaviour. The innovative, built-in rewards function gives children the chance to earn ‘bonus’ screen time in exchange for completing tasks and household chores.

We’re a small team of dedicated parents with a mission to ensure children have a balanced childhood. If you have any issues we’re here to help and will respond quickly! Simply drop us an email at [email protected]

Testers: please answer the following questions:
• Do you think ScreenLimit could be useful for parents to manage screen time?
• How user-friendly did you find ScreenLimit?
• What did you think about the rewards system?
• What does ScreenLimit do really well?
• Are there any other features that you would like to see?

Please also add a review of the app in the Mumsnet reviews section

Everyone who leaves feedback on this thread and fills in the feedback survey will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £200 voucher from the store of your choice.

NON TESTERS If you’re not testing, but would like the chance to win a £200 voucher for the store of your choice, please answer the following question by sharing your reply in the feedback thread below:

What app is the most used/misused by your children?

Thanks! And Good Luck with the prize draw!

Hi everyone, here is a comment from ScreenLimit to DemiTomato's post:

"Dear DemiTomato sorry you had some issues, there is a set up guide at www.screenlimit.net/help. With regards to the PIN, ScreenLimit works best if you control the device that your child uses from another parent device or from the ScreenLimit website on any browser.

If you download ScreenLimit on a parent device and the child device and pair them together by entering the same account details you can then control the child device from the parent device without the need to use a PIN. You only need to use a PIN to override a single device that a parent shares with a child. This is explained in the help set up section.

You mention that you would like a weekly report, this function will be being added to the app shortly.

Please contact us at [email protected] for any other issues and we can guide you through the process.

Thanks, The ScreenLimit Team."

Here is another response from ScreenLimit:

"Dear MTBMummy,

Sorry you had some setup issues. You mention that you had an issue locking yourself out before having the option to set the PIN. ScreenLimit works best if you control the device that your child uses from another parent device or from the ScreenLimit website on any browser. If you download ScreenLimit on a parent device and the child device and pair them together by entering the same account details you can then control the child device from the parent device without the need to use a PIN. You only need to use a PIN to override a single device that a parent shares with a child. More information can be found in the help set up section www.screenlimit.net/help.

For the rewards system,Children can't claim rewards without parental approval. Children can claim they have completed a task, this alerts the parent so they can check the task is completed before granting the reward.

You can manage individual apps on all platforms apart from iOS (due to Apple's restrictions). We are working on an iOS version of this which will be released soon. For the MDM profile on iOS, there is information about our privacy policy on the terms and conditions when you sign up for an account. There is also a notification before you install the MDM profile about the re-arranging of apps, this is an annoyance that is due to Apple's policies and we are lobbying them to improve the system. This rearrangement also happens if you use Apple's in built restrictions.

For step by step guidance we would be delighted to assist if you email us at [email protected]

Thanks,

A few more messages from ScreenLimit:

"Dear Mummyeme,

Thank you for testing ScreenLimit.

What device(s) is your daughter using? We can differentiate between homework apps and games on Windows PC's, Android and Kindles, just not on iOS at the moment. We are working on an iOS solution for the future. If you are using any of those devices other than iOS please email me at [email protected] and I will gladly help get that set up for you.

With regards to the initial setup we are working on making that easier and more intuitive and will have a better solution in the coming weeks.

For your comment on the rewards system, you don't need to use rewards. We are in the process of upgrading that too so that instead of earning credits to spend on more screen time, you will soon be able to define rewards for non screen time activities such as a trip to the zoo.

If you have any other queries please don't hesitate in contacting me.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear Fourmagpies,

Thanks for testing, I'm sorry you found it difficult to set up ScreenLimit, we are working on a new set up wizard to simplify the process. We will look into the issues that you had with the spinner that flips between Blocked, Timed and Unlimited and see if we can improve this.

With regards to the messaging, the message initially pops up on the screen as a notification, if you then go into the app you can read the messages in the message section. We will work on making that clearer for future users.

ScreenLimit works on wifi and mobile networks, unfortunately devices must be connected in order to receive commands from our servers to be able to block/unblock etc.

We are in a constant state of fine tuning and improving the app, we are a start up business comprising a handful of dedicated parents with a passion to ensure that our children have a balanced childhood. I'm really keen for you to get the most out of ScreenLimit and would be delighted to run through your setup, please email me at [email protected] to get this sorted.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear Justamoment,

What devices do your kids use?

On Android, Amazon Kindles and Windows PC's we can block individual apps such as youtube, you can also put a time limit on all apps apart from say educational apps which could be allowed for an unlimited amount of time.

With all devices including iOS you can put a time limit on how much time your children use the devices and when the time is up they can't use the devices. You can also set times of the day such as night time when devices are inactive.

I hope that helps, if you want to know more then check out our website www.screenlimit.net where you can join the free trial.

Thanks,

Hi MNers - another message from ScreenLimit below:

Dear Hairygodmother,

Thanks for testing ScreenLimit.

I'm glad you found it useful, we are working to eliminate any glitches that you mention and also to improve the initial setup process with a setup wizard.

With regards to your point on the rewards system, please note that children can only claim that they have completed a task in their dashboard. Once they have claimed the task and alert will appear in the parent dashboard which the parent can then check and then award that task (parents can also simply award credits for completed tasks without the children having claimed them). The children then store the credits earned and can use those to purchase screen time. We are also working on a future release whereby parents can define other non-screen rewards that children can purchase with credits such as a trip to the zoo.

You can also stipulate negative credits in the rewards system such as -5 credits for being naughty - so the sanction system that you request is already built in!

For the messaging, an alert should pop up on the screen at the time of sending. Children and parents can also view the conversation thread in the message section of the dashboard.

You can contact me at [email protected] if you need an more information.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton
CEO ScreenLimit

Here are a few more messages from ScreenLimit:

"Dear Superoz,

Thanks for testing ScreenLimit.

We are constantly improving the app and so your feedback is very useful, we will look into the niggles with icon size and delay in credits being awarded to see how we can improve.

We are developing a way to be able to manage individual apps on Apple and also a MAC version. If you would like to be one of the first to trial this then please contact me at [email protected].

Kind regards,

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear Bec0mum,

Thanks for testing ScreenLimit, your feedback is very useful.

We are working on an improved set up process which should be up and running in a couple of weeks. I'm really glad that you found our customer service quick and helpful, we work hard to ensure our users have the best possible support available.

With regards to your comment on the rewards system, one of our expert advisers recommend that screen time should not be taken for granted and that children should earn it. So some of our users don't give any screen time to their children until they have completed a set of tasks. Clearly all parents deal with the issue in different ways and we have plenty of related articles on our blog www.screenlimit.net/blog.

With regards to a help manual please go to www.screenlimit.net/help where you will see a range of articles to help with set up - this we are also improving.

Please don't hesitate in contacting me at [email protected] if you have any further queries.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear Suzi2910

Thanks for testing ScreenLimit, your feedback is very useful.

It sounds like you could have entered an incorrect email address on sign up, so when you tried to install in the second device the system didn't recognise your email and account. Did you receive a welcome email when you initially signed up? If not, that will be the problem.

We will update the sign up system in our next version release in a week or so to ensure that users need to confirm their email address on sign up.

If you email me at [email protected] I can check our system to see if there is a similar email account registered, but with perhaps one incorrect character. We can then get you properly up and running.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton
CEO ScreenLimit"

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear raspberryfluff,

Thanks for your comment.

With ScreenLimit you can do exactly what you're asking - if you time the YouTube and Silk Browser (in case they use the YouTube website) apps and then define all the other apps as unlimited. Alternatively you can simply block the YouTube app altogether.

Download the app on your device and your child's kindle, pair them together and join our FREE trial.

If you have any issues with the set up, email me at [email protected] and I will guide you through the process.

Thanks,

Jeremy Drayton.
