This thread is for the 15 Mumsnetters who tried Universal’s Decorative Egg Wraps with their DCs.

Here’s what Universal say, “These shrink to fit Egg Wraps featuring your favourite movie characters the Minions, E.T. and E.B. The Easter Bunny are great fun to watch – place one around a medium hard boiled egg, add to boiling water and they will shrink around the egg to make a cool Easter breakfast or the basis for movie themed Easter Egg hunt! Better yet, these wraps are free with selected kids DVD’s starting from just £3. Titles include Despicable Me, Hop, Coraline, Moshi Monsters, Mr Bean and Curious George and many more.”

Non-testers: Have you ever used Egg Wraps before with your DCs? If so, what did you think of them? If not, do you decorate Easter eggs in another way with your DCs?

Everyone who adds their comments to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 John Lewis voucher!

Testers: We’d like you to answer the questions below but please feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What were your overall impressions of the Egg Wraps? Did you like them, or not? What did your DCs think?
  2. Which Egg Wrap was your favourite? Why?
  3. Can you describe to other Mumsnetters how you had to use the Egg Wraps? Did you find the overall process easy, or not?
  4. Do you think you’d recommend them to friends and/or family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?
  5. Do you think you’d use them again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please also post a picture of your decorated eggs on this thread so that other Mumsnetters can see what you’ve made Smile.

I've never heard of egg wraps before. We have decorated eggs by painting, with felt tips, and by sticking various decorations on.

tester:
1)What were your overall impressions of the Egg Wraps? Did you like them, or not? What did your DCs think?

I thought they were an awesome idea - original and unique and yet so simply to use.

Kids loved the characters and the idea of it 'magically' working by putting them in boiling water.

2)Which Egg Wrap was your favourite? Why?

The minion one looks so impressive because minions are kinda that shape anyway.

3)Can you describe to other Mumsnetters how you had to use the Egg Wraps? Did you find the overall process easy, or not?

You need to boil your eggs first so they are cooked as you like them (i.e. hard boiled or soft boiled). Then I ran the eggs under cold water so I could handle them. Slip on an egg wrap, then using a spoon, lower into pan of boiling water. The egg wrap instantly shrinks to fit around the egg.

4)Do you think you’d recommend them to friends and/or family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?

Love the idea - love the designs - easy and fun to use so yes I would recommend.

5)Do you think you’d use them again? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would use them again. Far healthier to have fun with eggs with the kids like this than with chocolate eggs.

However the downside is less creativity of their own (whereas if they decorate their own with craft materials they can get creative) - but on the other hand you can eat these whereas you can't if they are covered in paint and glue!

Other problem was that it left quite a small gap to get into your egg to eat it, so next time I would snip off a bit off the top and bottom of the wrap before using to make them a narrower wrap so that there is plenty of space to get into the egg.

We made the minion, ET, the hop bunny and the girl who we don't recognise.

I've never used egg wraps - are they messy enough?
We always found the messier our egg-decorating session, the more fun we had !
We started off painting them, then one year we decided to try dipping them in different colours - we got some lovely effects from mixing colours and dipping the eggs lots of times.

lhlee62 · 16/03/2015 23:22

These look lovely, it would be nice if they came in more designs, but I guess that these are also to see if they would appeal to people. It's a shame they are quite easy to make and not a bit more fun.

I will be doing the old fashioned painting on boiled eggs, I remember doing it in school years ago and feeling a bit sad when they had to go in the bin

jazzitup · 17/03/2015 10:16

Have not heard of egg wraps but we just love to decorate eggs, fun for the family.

vincenta · 17/03/2015 11:06

Yes we use wraps to decorate our Easter eggs, they look lovely and are easy to apply, especially if you put egg in bowl and pour over boiling water, that way wrap fits much better!
Egg wraps are great idea, especially with minions my son will love them definitely will buy for easter.

i am a non tester but they have certainly caught my attention i had never heard of them before this and they look really eggciting and will keep my eyes peeled and get some for next year hopefully

sallyc06 · 17/03/2015 12:56

We hand decorate our eggs, sticking bits of cotton wool for hair and making funny faces with paints, then we have a little competition but of course all the children win a prize.

I havent ever used egg wraps but i would love to try them!

Anj123 · 17/03/2015 15:30

Non tester. I had not heard of these until I read about them on Mumsnet. I think my daughter would like to try them. We would normally use pens, glitter, feathers and stickers to decorate eggs.

lionheart · 17/03/2015 19:17

Have not used these before. They look fun but fiddly. I like the minion.

mrstiggy · 17/03/2015 19:24

Hi, thanks very much for the egg wraps and DVD. The film was an unexpected but very welcome surprise, the kids love The Lorax!
I'd never heard of egg wraps before, but our general experience of egg related crafts were dire. We've had all manner of failed dye attempts and badly glued on disasters, so this seemed right up our street! The children all loved them and enjoyed choosing which picture to use first. The pictures themselves are great quality.
The egg wraps are incredibly simple to use, literally slip the boiled egg in and put it in water. My children loved watching the plastic shrink around the egg like magic the second it touched the hot water. And the finished eggs look fantastic! We've put our eggs in lunchboxes for tomorrow's school lunch so my children can show them off to their friends.
We would certainly recommend them to friends and family, it's a quick and simple and the end results are great.

DD and I love doing crafts together.

Not used them before (or even heard of them until now), we usually just use pens and paint for ours.

grannybiker · 17/03/2015 21:55

Wow, now I've seen these egg wraps am impressed, however mine love to be rather more, ermmm "Spontaneous?!" LOL!

Yes I have heard of them, but the children love more 'free expression' !!!!!!
We colour the shells while boiling with food colouring, then we use felt tips and anything else, like stickers, fabric, feathers and try to make 'people', perhaps with hats. Then all our characters are given 'eggxiting' names

Ritakd · 18/03/2015 00:32

Never seen them but they look fun. We always put all our arts & craft gear out, glitter, pens, furry bits..... & go for it!

imrankhanpost · 18/03/2015 06:42

Not sure what this is however willing to explore. I use tradition paintbrush or markers.

Candyperfumegirl · 18/03/2015 09:20

I have never heard of egg wraps before, but these look like lots of fun :) I prefer to decorate using polystyrene eggs instead of real ones, using real eggs seems like a waste of food to me.

Jennyba · 18/03/2015 10:21

I have used the egg wraps and my DC struggled but I managed to do it, he choose Minions as they are his favourite characters at the moment and they look really professional and fun would definately recommend them although can be a bit fiddly. Will definately be using them again x

gizmosmama · 18/03/2015 11:05

Never heard of egg wraps but we'll be blowing our eggs and decorating them. Some just painted, some glitter dipped, some decoupaged with tissue paper.

Iggy131313 · 18/03/2015 11:44

these look great!! I havnt seen them before but im buying some RIGHT NOW!! We usually use felt tip pens and also dye to make a colourful easter display
