This thread is for the 15 Mumsnetters who tried Universal’s Decorative Egg Wraps with their DCs.

Here’s what Universal say, “These shrink to fit Egg Wraps featuring your favourite movie characters the Minions, E.T. and E.B. The Easter Bunny are great fun to watch – place one around a medium hard boiled egg, add to boiling water and they will shrink around the egg to make a cool Easter breakfast or the basis for movie themed Easter Egg hunt! Better yet, these wraps are free with selected kids DVD’s starting from just £3. Titles include Despicable Me, Hop, Coraline, Moshi Monsters, Mr Bean and Curious George and many more.”

Non-testers: Have you ever used Egg Wraps before with your DCs? If so, what did you think of them? If not, do you decorate Easter eggs in another way with your DCs?

Everyone who adds their comments to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 John Lewis voucher!

Testers: We’d like you to answer the questions below but please feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What were your overall impressions of the Egg Wraps? Did you like them, or not? What did your DCs think?
  2. Which Egg Wrap was your favourite? Why?
  3. Can you describe to other Mumsnetters how you had to use the Egg Wraps? Did you find the overall process easy, or not?
  4. Do you think you’d recommend them to friends and/or family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?
  5. Do you think you’d use them again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please also post a picture of your decorated eggs on this thread so that other Mumsnetters can see what you’ve made Smile.

Everyone who posts their feedback and picture on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Never even heard of egg wraps before but they look like something I would get the kids to have a go at, but I like tradition of getting the pen, glue and art box out and letting them use their imagination to create something.

houseofnerds · 15/03/2015 22:56

I'm with Archery Annie. Where is the creativity?
It just sounds like another unnecessary money grab destined for the landfill, with little longevity or even skill.
I can't even imagine trying to eat a shrink wrapped egg?

Are they people so stifled in creativity that they really think this is a 'fun craft'?
Weird.
Never heard of them before, and I hope I never do again!...

Smooshface · 15/03/2015 23:41

Well, watching the shrink wrap do its thing was actually quite fun and daughter liked the motifs. I would probably combine these with regular eggs for a hunt.

I'm not totally devoid of ideas, just given the opportunity to try them was fun and daughter really enjoyed doing them. I should perhaps tell her she was wrong, she didn't enjoy it because we didn't create the things ourselves, it's all about making your own fun and not using anything that can be bought or given away free with DVDs we buy.

These look brilliant. I'm going to keep an eye out for them and try them out.
We decorate eggs for the school Easter egg competition. My little girl is only 5 so we've only done two so far but the next one is coming up soon. We use whatever we can find at home. Here's our two;

I have never heard of them and have never decorated Easter eggs before with the children, but these look fab!

NerrSnerr · 16/03/2015 05:47

I'm a none tester.

I had never heard of egg wraps until I read this thread! I decorate eggs the old fashioned way (like we used to at school at Easter time) sticking stuff on it with glue!!

My children would love these.

We will drain and then design a face or pattern on our eggs. We got big goose eggs last year from a friend and they looked great.

funkyfish586 · 16/03/2015 10:12

Hello, I haven't ever tried these but I think they look like lots of fun. The only thing I would be worried about is that when you break the top off & the plastic breaking in to the egg?

Catmadroo · 16/03/2015 10:15

I've never heard of egg wraps, I have tried decorating eggs with my son with paint, stickers, and generally sticking things on but it doesn't work very well and he isn't really interested in crafts, he enjoys painting them though.

Never used egg wraps. Quite like the sound of them because you can then still eat the egg afterwards.
Sounds a bit party pooper I know, but decorating eggs only to throw them away seems a bit, well, wasteful.
And, no, please don't suggest blowing out the contents to decorate the shells. Can anyone actually do that without swearing?

Haven't used egg wraps but we use glue, paint and whatever we can find around the house. Last year we made a fairy using toilet roll, feathers and glitter glue

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2015 14:32

Non tester. I have used egg wraps before but am very Envy of the testers because these look really cool (much more so than the ones I have had before, which were more traditional twee Easter scenes and bunnies and stuff), but we don't buy DVDs these days - is there no way to just buy them Sad?

We have also done wax-resist and dyes, and have blown eggs and then painted them in the past.

createbeauty · 16/03/2015 14:48

I have not tried any egg wraps with my son yet, but I think he would really enjoy them!

maureen3733 · 16/03/2015 14:53

i have never used egg wraps. hadnt even heardof them.

diamondsrock · 16/03/2015 15:05

We've never used egg wraps or heard of them before. We usually use acrylic paints and glitter glue, plus odds and ends like sequins and stickers to decorate eggs.

CMOTDibbler · 16/03/2015 15:13

Non tester - we try and decorate eggs, but are a bit rubbish at it!

julieef · 16/03/2015 15:43

No I have not used it, but mygrandchildren rap in brightly coloured paperad glitter

Yes we have tried egg wraps before and really liked them. We also like to experiment with food dyes and painting eggs. Great fun. :)

ArcheryAnnie · 16/03/2015 17:06

Oh, give it a rest, smooshface. You can have as much fun as you like with them - it well may be fun. Fun isn't the same as creative (which it isn't), and that it's just turning a nice little craft activity into a standardised corporate thing (which it is).

supernaan · 16/03/2015 17:18

We were given egg wraps as a gift and the kids loved them and were easy to use so they all had fun. Not seen them myself whilst out shopping but the person who gifted them to the kids will be getting more for us so should be a lot of fun in store for the kids again.

stewaris · 16/03/2015 19:37

We boil in food colouring and I dilute down food colouring and let them paint designs on. I would try the wraps as the food colouring is a bit thin, like water paints, and the food gel is better. Besides they love it, especially as I have my own chickens and there is great delight in choosing which chicken is your favourite and picking that egg.

Kandboys · 16/03/2015 19:43

I have not even heard of these before! Definitely need to find more information before Easter

Maiyakat · 16/03/2015 20:00

Non-tester. I'd never heard of egg wraps until this thread - to me it kind of takes the fun out of decorating! We enjoy decorating eggs with paint and glitter.

justgina · 16/03/2015 20:07

never used them but they look like a lot of fun! we've just always used dyes, paints, coloured glues and glitter :)

gingercat12 · 16/03/2015 22:26

Not heard of egg wraps, but will try to get some. I feel brave this year, so we might try painting eggs.
