UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

Serena's battery died on the way back from Morrisons. Grin I thought she had gone quiet.

chickensandbees · 09/10/2014 15:54

1% downloaded 2 hours 5 minutes to go!

chickensandbees · 09/10/2014 16:43

its at 38% now with 10hours to go!!! How is that even possible???

MimsyBorogroves · 09/10/2014 16:56

chickensandbees - mine was like that yesterday once it stopped been stuck at 100 hours plus It ended up taking about 5 hours in the end.

Allisgood1 · 09/10/2014 16:59

Eddie, she doesn't like american accents either Smile

Pikkewyn · 09/10/2014 17:40

Serena is doing a sterling job, she let me know there were 6 minutes of delays this morning on my way from school to the town but the 15 minutes of delays she predicted on my way to work never materialised. I confess I ignored there 'traffic delay red road' warning as i knew if there were 15 mins of delays the traffic wouldn't have been moving past Costa and the whole town wold be a standstill.

VeryStressedMum · 09/10/2014 17:59

What is supposed to happen when i shout Hey TomTom?

alemci · 09/10/2014 18:01

i was ok on journey to location but then returning home it wanted to takebus somewhere else and i couldn't work out how to keep any locations on file like Google maps does.

speed camera warning good and like the way it labels roads clearly

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2014 18:03

I know I have already asked, but why did we have to vote for a famous voice? I thought it said we would get whichever one got the most votes? or am I mistaken?

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 09/10/2014 18:13

Are they going to open a new thread for feedback?!

did everyone download the instructions or just do it instinctively.

Some good, some not so good feedback. Journey down the M1 and round the M25 to Heathrow today.

The good - clear lanes and good traffic information, but not convinced it updates the traffic that often, as I think it over estimated the length of delay. Clear instructions and took me to the door of my destination, which is not always the case at Heathrow.

The not so good - couldn't make it respond to Hey Tom Tom, so ended up using the touch screen which is not the safest (but I wasn't moving most of the time). It took me a short cut getting to the M1 which I knew would be longer due to traffic so I ignored her and she got a bit insistent.

The most irritating things was the time it gave me to consider an alternative route. All the way round the north west M25 towards Heathrow there was constant traffic queuing due to a broken down car in the middle lane. I lost count of the times it offered me an alternative route but only gave me a few seconds to consider it, by which time it had flicked back onto the main screen. I couldn't look at it for long as I needed my eyes on the road. I wonder if you can program it to keep it on the screen for longer?

ChippingInLatteLover · 09/10/2014 19:44

Does anyone know how to set up a route between two 'my places'?

Or to set a 'scenic route'. I don't always want shortest or fastest never likely to want most economic but I would like scenic.

My thoughts so far... (after 2 days of full on use)

Pro's

If you ignore its first 'route' it quickly changes to a new one and doesn't shout at you!

It's a lovely screen.

Con's

Voice activation is not going well. I have to shout at her, but even then she doesn't understand half of what I say & tonight I couldn't get her to go 'Home' 'via' another location. [and as far as I can work out so far, you have to turn the voice activation on each time, sort of defeating the purpose I'd have thought!?).

I'm finding it annoying that it's not more 'intuitive' but maybe I'm expecting too much? I go out of the street the same way every time. It doesn't seem to adapt to that and still insists on sending me the other way. As I say, it's not the end of the world, just a tad annoying.

Even on 'night' setting it's too bright (can I adjust that further? I don't want to lose the brightness in the day, so will have to try again later).

The point where the charger plugs into the holder is difficult (for me anyway) to access when the holder is in place. It would be better on the front of the holder or on the actual unit itself (I can't see why it wasn't better positioned so that it only needs to plug into the unit, not the holder? I don't want the wire there all the time (has to go on top of the steering wheel), but neither do I want to have to take the holder off of the windscreen everytime I need to plug it in.

I can't get the holder to adhere to anything other than glass, and I feel it's too bulky to have on the windscreen really (not helped by the fact that I'm short).

It needs to come with a case, even if it's just a cheap neoprene cover to protect the screen in your bag.

Blondieminx · 09/10/2014 19:46

I picked mine up today from the courier base 10 mins up the road and I can now solve the missing texts/updates issue ... Our contact details were not entered by the company that despatched the packages at the time they booked the couriers. As Interlink were not given our numbers, they couldn't use them to send us texts etc.

Anyway I had a play. It won't listen to Hey Tom Tom. She was very polite when I ignored her to go the easier route to my mum's house.

I am also keen to know the size of the files before I attempt these updates

Like SocksRock up thread, i'd really like to know what is the trigger point for "traffic"?

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2014 19:47

YY to the case. I am going to rummage in the house for something suitable because I just had to throw it in my handbag today. For the price it should include a case.

lougle · 09/10/2014 19:55

Definite yes to expecting a case and a UK plug as standard.

My dash board is very deep (Ford Galaxy) so putting it on the windscreen is not practical. It has been positioned very nicely on the front triangular widow in the corner and I like the range of the rotation of the arm.

The voice recognition isn't 100% and when it does recognise the address, saying any of the numbers on the list kicks it back to the address finder page. Frustrating.

SocksRock · 09/10/2014 20:09

I think if you updated, they changed the voice activation phrase to "Hello TomTom" - that's what mine responds to now, and it was definitely "Hey TomTom" before the update...

And for the love of little fishes, I wish it would pronounce Witney properly. It's Wit-knee. Not Wit-neh...

And for the home commute - the traffic disconnected itself and wouldn't reconnect. No shortage of mobile signal, I had full 3G on the phone, so don't know what that was about. Wondering if this is a regular problem...

After swimming - it found mcdonalds easily with the voice activation...

Am about 50/50 on it at the moment.

I love love the new windscreen holder, fitted easily to my windscreen in the bottom right corner (Ford Focus), and it dead easy to clip it in and out.

alemci · 09/10/2014 20:26

i worry about putting on windscreen because it leaves marks then could cause break in as they think sat nav could have been in car

Floralnomad · 09/10/2014 20:26

Mine was a bit hit and miss with the voice recognition ,it seems to need to be spoken to in a certain tone - I've sent it out with DH tonight with instructions only to use the voice recognition . I really like it compared to my older tomtom especially the holder and connections ,the screen is also lovely .

lougle · 09/10/2014 20:30

Oh I didn't think you can take the holder on and off the screen? The hose thingy is sticky, isn't it?

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 09/10/2014 20:38

Mine definitely doesn't work with Hey TomTom, even with me and DS shouting at it. Will try Hello instead.

James the Aussie is annoying me now, how many times does he need to tell me to grab my sunnies etc before I actually arrive at the destination? Was three times this morning.

Did like how it added minutes on to my journey and I could see exactly where on the route. It didn't suggest an alternative so I tried one and it probably took about as much time so I can understand why it wouldn't have bothered.

Very clear screen and directions. DS enjoyed being able to see them from the back although he did say it was bossy

NoMoreDelays · 09/10/2014 20:45

Just collected mine from neighbour's house. Having looked at some of the posts here I will tackle it on Saturday. Very unusually I am commuting to work by train all this week!

ChippingInLatteLover · 09/10/2014 20:59

The hose thingy is sticky, isn't it?

Lougle Are you on the right thread Hmm??

Grin No idea what you really mean though? What 'hose'?

Yes Lougle it just twist 'done up' 'undone' :)

Alemci I just leave the holder on the windscreen and take Tom with me. I am not undoing the fecking holder 20 times a day as well. it's enough of an arse taking tom tom out every bloody time

Lookslike he's Australian they're all fucking annoying he wouldn't want you to forget your sunnies mate........ the Kiwi bloke is nicer :)

It would be good if it could stop the radio playing when they speak like the built in ones do.

NoMoreDelays is this a thread specific namechange Grin

TequilaMockinBird · 09/10/2014 21:00

I'm having problems getting on to TomTom.com - apparently the website is having technical difficulties!

How do I know if it needs updating? Will it only tell me on the website, or will the unit tell me too?
