UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

Update complete!! I'm telling you this at almost 4am because dd2 woke and needed feeding so thought I may as well pop down and check and not because it suddenly dawned on me that I'd left my laptop switched on, on the fabric sofa and was worried I might burn the house down Blush

TequilaMockinBird · 09/10/2014 07:56

Mine was delivered to a neighbour yesterday so picked it up last night. Will be plugging in and updating after work tonight ready to be used at the weekend Grin

Mine took all night to download and then time this morning to add them. Will use it later for the swimming run.

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2014 08:21

Short trip to DS1's bus stop. Serena is very good, telling us the names of the roads. DS and I didn't know the name of one of them before today. Blush Grin

OK, first commute done. So far, Socks 1 - TomTom 0. I have to commute via horrid Oxford traffic, and having done this for a year I know most of the shortcuts, but it depends very heavily on the traffic as so which one will be quickest on any given day. It did not pick up the traffic on the A40 Eastbound between Witney East and Eynsham correctly, as I hit the back of the traffic jam around 0.75miles before it said I would. It then didn't reroute, until I turned down a shortcut I already know. It recalculated the route, which was 7 min quicker than the one I had been on - but it didn't do this automatically. How often does it reroute? As the one I took was quicker than the one I was on, even without the additional traffic it didn't;'t pick up.

It didn't detect slow traffic on the A4095 in Long Hanborough, I was doing 15mph in a 30mph zone, albeit moving all the time. Does it know where I am and transmit that data back to TomTom? ie are all users of TomTom's contributing to the traffic reports? No button to say "I'm in a traffic jam".

What is the definition of slow traffic? 10% below the speed limit? 50% below the speed limit? At 50% below I would expect that that would qualify as some sort of delay...

On the other hand - the voice control worked beautifully, was very easy to add a stop to my route (via childminder), very easy to add my current location to My Places, and the voice was nice and calming (Serena, I think as she was reading road names). She was having trouble competing with Bon Jovi at volume 11 though, so I missed a couple of turns she advised and was driving on autopilot - possibly not a fair test in that case! Will turn the radio down tomorrow and concentrate on her a bit better maybe...

I can't find an additional voice? Which one won and how do we download it?

On the whole, easy to use - but not convinced it can pick up the exceptionally quickly changing traffic situation on my normal route.

So ours arrived yesterday as expected, but with me being at work and DH being home he didn't think to plug it into a computer to download bits so he is doing that today. So tomorrow will be the first outing. So far it looks good, but I haven't had much chance to see much as Wednesday is my course night so I didn't get in till 10PM. Will have a proper look tonight and will use tomorrow onwards.

nicename · 09/10/2014 08:53

What is everyone downloading? I plugged mine into the PC, it asked me what language I wanted and where I was... And that was it. I had a play, scared myself by fiddling with the sound level (much to the amusement of my niece who then went on to do a long impression of a dinosaur) and that was it.

SophieBarringtonWard · 09/10/2014 08:59

My download was instantaneous Hmm feel like I must have missed something!

Allisgood1 · 09/10/2014 09:10

Did I do the update wrong? Mine took 2 min max. I plugged it in, went to the tomtom websute, downloaded something and then clicked on it, clicked through all the agreements and then tomtom said it was up to date! Did I miss something out?

CMP69 · 09/10/2014 09:50

Mine was plugged in from 5:30 ish last night until 7:45 this morning and on the pc it said 87% but TomTom said complete. So I just unplugged it. Not one of my usual trips today but it took me the way I would have gone anyway and I got stuck in roadworks Angry Not a great start!

lynniep · 09/10/2014 09:59

Well mine was delivered to work yesterday, so I now have it. Having read all the comments I'm not even considering plugging it into my work pc as I have to leave in 3 hours. Will wait till I'm home...

whoops · 09/10/2014 10:41

I've used mine this morning to get to the hospital and it told me it was going to take me 2hrs to get through traffic that took 10mins to get through and didn't offer an alternative route.

It did take me a route I wouldn't normally go though and seemed a
Little quicker.

The map hasn't been updated to show a roundabout has now been changed to traffic lights And it wanted to take me across a bridge that has been closed since March and is supposed to reopen in November it did show me road works that haven't been going very long though!

ilovemonstersinc · 09/10/2014 11:31

Do I have to update?

ilovemonstersinc · 09/10/2014 11:34

Also Flowers to whoops lo. Its shit when they are in hosp so much

lougle · 09/10/2014 11:43

I used it this morning but it seemed to get stuck on a route that it wanted me to go on and I couldn't get out of it to the main menu screen. I had to turn it off and turn it on again.

IAmAPaleontologist · 09/10/2014 13:03

Well i think mine is with my neighbours but i am on day 2 of 3 13 hour shifts so won't play until the weekend.

alemci · 09/10/2014 13:57

mine was downloading maps. still not sure what to with it. would rather have a paper manual of sorts.

new computer nightmare at same time

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 09/10/2014 14:02

Got mine today, was going to use it to do the ballet run after school but the updates are going to take 12 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My laptop will overheat if it's on for that long, no updates for me I think.

Allisgood1 · 09/10/2014 14:11

I think my tomtom is deaf Hmm I have to shout for her to respond, cue my two year old shouting (in an american accent) only then she became quickly bored of shouting "hey tomtom" when I did so then had her whining "I don't like hey tomtom" every time I was shouting trying to get its attention.

Floralnomad · 09/10/2014 14:15

We did the updates last night and it took about 4 hours but I think some of that was my DH trying to make enough space on the laptop ( I'm computer illiterate) . I took it out and about this morning and it warned me about a mobile speed camera and on the return journey asked me if it was still there ,which is quite clever . Its much nicer than my old tomtom when you decide to take an alternative route to the one it has chosen, it quickly just found a new route whereas my old version keeps shouting 'turn around when possible'.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 09/10/2014 14:15

I can't get mine to understand my scottish accent! And as for scottish street names, oh dear. It can't understand a street name near me that's spelled like Edinburgh (not outing self ha ha). I can't get it to respond to "hey tomtom" either - prejudice against scots, no? Grin

whoops · 09/10/2014 14:35

I was trying hey Tom Tom and found that Hello Tom Tom worked

VeryStressedMum · 09/10/2014 15:16

Well mine finally arrived!!! It's updating at the moment 27% done after an hour..I'm going out out so hopefully this evening it will be ready.
Can't wait to start playing with it Smile

chickensandbees · 09/10/2014 15:38

Mines just arrived. Not much in the way of instructions. Will get the old laptop out to get started and hopefully try out tomorrow.
