UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

My laptop is telling me there are two more updates but I haven't connected it today. It seems like they release a lot of updates, perhaps each one is responding to something we've suggested...

Chipping maybe instead of reminding us to take our sunnies, he should remind us to hide take TomTom.

CMP69 · 09/10/2014 21:23

Angelie we need a Fred. Lots of people have lots to say and it's only day 1

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2014 21:26

DH just shouted 'DS2 YOU HAD BETTER BE IN THE SHOWER' from the hall, up the stairs and Serena replied!

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 09/10/2014 21:30

Grin Sparkling I'm listening...

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2014 21:34
Shock
ChippingInLatteLover · 09/10/2014 21:41

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2014 21:50

ChippingInLatteLover · 09/10/2014 21:52

CMP69 · 09/10/2014 22:35

Soz this is a luverly thread, I just thought we'd get an official TomTom one Smile

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 09/10/2014 22:44

Me too. Perhaps one entitled 'Serena's listening'

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 09/10/2014 22:48

Hurray, DH has finally managed to get mine to link up to the PC (apparently PC was not automatically getting drivers or sumfink or other) so it is updating now.

Already took it to work and back, it was alright but had a few niggles. I agree they should have a case (worried about scratching it in my bag), and I very much agree it is a PIG to get the wire into the back of the car mount thing, especially if you have mounted it low down! Even getting it out again was tricky. On the plus side the mount was easy to put on (and take off again repeatedly when I couldn't get the dratted cable in or out!).

Serena was very good at the road names and numbers, taught me a few I didn't know! It took me my regular way to work, except that it tried to get me to take the naughty rat-run option with the 20mph limit and traffic calming past a school, so I ignored it to take the usual (very slightly longer but more intended for through traffic) alternative. It also got a bit confused by the big work car park and kept telling me to turn round Grin

Coming back I confused it a bit by forgetting to tell it I wanted to go by the-route-via-the-shops, but it adjusted well. Took me a slightly different route from my usual at one point but I don't think there was much in it really.

I did get a bit annoyed with it repeating some of the directions twice in the space of a few yards, and also it was sometimes a bit late with the directions - OK for today as I knew where I was going, but not so good if you were in a strange place. We have a notorious double roundabout and it only told me where to come off the second one as I was already pulling off... Generally though it was a good start considering we are still getting used to each other. I'm looking forward to the free voice though which should make it a bit more fun!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 09/10/2014 22:49

Oh I forgot to say the "Hey Tomtom" worked fine at home but NOT AT ALL in the car today Confused even when I switched the radio off. Oh well, maybe tomorrow...

Floralnomad · 09/10/2014 22:54

Well DH is back and used voice recognition with absolutely no hassle ,obviously our Serena prefers to talk to men !

ChippingInLatteLover · 09/10/2014 23:33

Floosie!!

CMP69 yeah, we will :) But I think MN have a few things on their plate at the minute so another thread for this might not have reached the top of their list We can C&P our relevant posts if need be, or they can just wade through our waffle Grin

inigo - glad it wasn't just me! Not too sure what I'm going to do about it, maybe just charge it via the laptop?!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 10/10/2014 00:06

Hey TomTom no longer works for me, it seems I have to say Hello TomTom now.

Chipping you can go to settings and switch on automatic voice control by using the wake-up phrase (Hello TomTom). Saves having to switch it on each time.

I have been very impressed today - love the screen size and resolution, and I find the voice recognition very very good. I love the way it recognises an address when you say it rather than having to type it in. That is my favourite bit so far.

I wonder why MNHQ has been so quiet about the voice vote and setting up a feedback thread?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 10/10/2014 00:08

Oh forgot to mention the one thing that is really annoying - Serena's inability to pronounce the city where I live. She has a very weird way of pronouncing the "ee" sound. It comes out as "eh" and is very very irritating.

ChippingInLatteLover · 10/10/2014 01:14

Anne I had done that, but it didn't seem to 'stay' done. I'll have to try again, but I think something else I'm doing might be 'undoing' it?! It's a bit annoying that it doesn't tell you that doing x will change y. For example I picked the voice of Tim, but when I went to settings I chose miles & feet. Then today some woman was yakking and I thought Hmm that's NOT my Tim!! Turns out after a bit of faffing, Tim doesn't support miles & feet, only miles and yards, but instead of asking me if I wanted to change M&Y to M&F as it would mean losing 'Tim' it just changed it. Now I know it's a sat nav, but even so...

I think they might have gone quiet due to a few other things happening, nothing to do with this (bit of a legal to do with a religious group and a close down on Saturday to do technical stuff) Mind you, it shouldn't take the whole team Grin Also, they might be waiting until they've all been sent out. Who knows Grin

Serena has a rather irritating voice!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 10/10/2014 07:57

Oh I see, Chipping, I haven't made other changes yet, so that's probably the issue. Will see what happens today.

Oh, didn't know about the MN issues - real life has annoyingly got in the way this week. It always happens when I don't pay attention.

I am not going to be able to keep Serena if she doesn't buck up her pronunciation. What is Tim like? Can he speak properly?

ChippingInLatteLover · 10/10/2014 08:37

Tim seems OK, but he's not had too many challenges yet he's been on silent so I can hear the radio most of the time and you get stupid Serena anyway when you use voice control, I'm guessing the others haven't been programmed to be able to do all that.

SarahSnail · 10/10/2014 09:04

I've only just received my Tom tom yesterday, so today will be spent setting it up and seeing if I can find a short cut to work later ?? x

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 10/10/2014 10:02

Argh we have now managed to get ours to connect to the PC, but it tries to download for a few minutes and then fails EVERY time despite me spending ages trying to make it work. And now it looks as though somehow the attempts to update have wiped the ORIGINAL maps, so it is saying it has no maps = presumably totally unusable! [tearing hair out face]

whoops · 10/10/2014 10:16

Does anyone else have an urge to drive somewhere random to test it out or listen for really bad traffic jam and see if the alternative route works
BlushBlushBlushBlush If it's just me!!

redastra · 10/10/2014 11:03

Just received mine this morning, so tonight will be spent setting it up and then using it tomorrow hopefully!!

ChippingInLatteLover · 10/10/2014 11:07

How's it going Sarah?

Inigo - Hope you can get that sorted without too much hassle!

Whoops you may or may not be alone in that not I was planning on giving it a long distance work out tomorow with some diversions, but just found out the small people's piano concert is on in the middle of the day, not the late afternoon as I'd thought! Grrr. Maybe Sunday.

Good luck red

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 10/10/2014 12:59

I used mine again this morning to go to my yoga class. There's not much route choice to this location, so on the way home I deliberately tried to confuse her by taking a different road and heading off down some track roads/unclassified roads. She coped well, knew exactly where I was even if she was a little insistent that I take a short cut when I wanted to take the scenic route!

Still can't get her to use the voice commands, felt a right tit shouting "hey tomtom" and "hello tomtom" at it in the carpark at yoga. I think mine is deaf.

Anyone else find the "main menu" button is too small to press when your driving, I need to take my eyes off the road and really look for it. And another vote for no bloody plug! I can't charge it in the house, the Pdf Manual says not to use the computer for charging but recommends the 3 hour charging period should be done in the car. Hmmm. Oh, and the cable is a pain in the arse to connect to the mount when it's stuck to the window. Why make the mount cover the power slot on the unit?
