UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

I love the voice control, it even understands mine and dh's thick Yorkshire accents. The only time we confused it was after dh activated it and when she replied 'I'm listening' he remarked 'well I'm glad some bugger does!' Apparently she didn't understand that. Wouldn't be the first time his complaints fell on deaf ears. Still no free voice tho, and we've updated everything.

Fishstix · 08/10/2014 20:30

Mine arrived. Managed to switch it on accidentally when taking it out of the box, lovely big screen, clear, love the choice of voices...esp the fun Aus and NZ guys (bit sexist though, all the girls sound boring!)
Yet to update, dh has nicked the laptop nd not home til late. Cant wait to try it!

Fishstix · 08/10/2014 20:30

Do we yet have a feedback thread?

CMOTDibbler · 08/10/2014 20:32

Mine arrived, am super excited to get started with it!

Katz · 08/10/2014 20:42

Mines arrived currently updating, did have a panic that it wasn't Mac compatible but realized I was just being daft!

DurhamDurham · 08/10/2014 21:19

A very kind neighbour took in the parcel for me, just unpacked it and it looks fab. Very neat and expensive looking. Heavier than I had imagined but I guess that's because it's full of very technical clever thingies to make it work so well Smile

MimsyBorogroves · 08/10/2014 21:25

I want to try voice control tomorrow, but I fear it'll be a nightmare when DS1 and 2 discover it too. That could make drives a lot more interesting...

6kidsandcounting · 08/10/2014 21:25

Received mine today, super excited to use it. Thanks

CMP69 · 08/10/2014 21:45

4 hours and only 67% that's mad. I'm not loving it yet!

SocksRock · 08/10/2014 21:53

mimsy telling the kids (6 and 4) that you shout Hey TomTom at it may be the biggest mistake of my life so far...

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 08/10/2014 22:16

I don't get it, why do you have to plug it into the computer? Mine just switched on and worked out of the box and seems fine, I have it plugged into the PC now but it just seems to be charging and not trying to do anything particular. Should it be? I think maybe it doesn't actually need to do anything.

Allisgood1 · 08/10/2014 22:19

Myname. Just plug it in and go to the tomtom website to ensure you have up to date maps. Mine also turned on and was functional right away.

Pikkewyn · 08/10/2014 22:21

I got mine in and haven't connected to the computer yet. We used it to get to and from a violin lesson today and red roads that show high traffic were very useful as we were running late, I could see the traffic standstill and change route accordingly. I haven't sussed how to make the map turn to direction of travel without having the navigation mode on.

nightswift · 08/10/2014 22:23

Mynameis....

When you plug it in a register the device (so you get email updates to update the maps etc in future) it prompts you to do 4 updates - 5 hours and counting at 84% complete...!

LadyWithLapdog · 08/10/2014 22:24

Mine arrived. Still getting to grips to basic stuff. It seems that HOME is already input, some place in the middle of bloody Spain. So I had to save my home address as HOME xxx which makes me sound like a super-rich wanker with multiple homes. More to follow.

Mine decided it didn't like our street so rehomed us in the mews behind. I agree with its decision.

SocksRock · 08/10/2014 22:39

Good God. 67% complete and still 6 hours to go apparently. Although it's only been going 3 hours so far, so I'm guessing it might be a bit quicker as our rubbish country broadband gets a bit faster as people go to bed.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 22:41

Rudy is that in case the case gets stolen with sat nav in? Never even thought about that in all the years I've had them... Ooops

ChippingInLatteLover · 08/10/2014 23:09

Nicename Grin

My laptop is not going to cope with any of that, so unless it's necessary for the Feedback, I'm not going to do it until I get my new laptop/mini/something.

Lady that's weird, was it in a cellophane wrapper?? You can 'edit' the home address :)

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 23:40

Chipping I didn't even realise I needed to do the updates so got going straight away. Seemed to work perfectly well!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 08/10/2014 23:49

Hmph well mine is now connected to the PC but not being recognised Confused so not sure what to do next, I've clicked various things to try and get help but got no further. Although it still seems to work fine without the updates, so I guess it doesn't matter unless something has changed on the maps since the one it's already got...

ChippingInLatteLover · 08/10/2014 23:54

Looks - yes, I've used it today, but I'm not sure it will be doing everything it should be without the updates - it's fine for what I need, but if the feedback requires us to have done it, I'll have to find someway of doing it. My laptop will just not cope with any of that malarky!!

Squiffie · 08/10/2014 23:56

Just plugged mine in to do the updates. Wish I hadn't bothered, I have to go to bed and leave it and will probably wake up to an error message and have to start over

I'm with SocksRock on the whole telling the kids business too. DS (6) spent the entire 20 minute journey to my parents' house shouting 'hey TomTom' not that Serena paid any attention although I think that just made it worse Hmm

ChippingInLatteLover · 09/10/2014 00:11

Well, that's one mistake I'll not be making (letting on about Hey Tom Tom) Grin Thanks guys!!
