UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

Voice recognition never works with me unless I put on a voice like the queen.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 17:44

Installed really quick, then 4 updates installing now, say 30 mins.

Maybe quicker if you register and use device first? Who knows...

mine wasn't too long and i registered first but it wouldn't let me put log in details in actual tomtom.

will use tomorrow. looks goodSmile

Ok, I'm just back from my first trip out with it. I think it's good. Serena's very solemn. I found it too quiet - should have sorted that before I went.

I've just looked on the MyDrive site and there's a 5th update, so that's plodding away.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/10/2014 18:32

Just updating mine now - it keeps saying 20 minutes and I get all excited, then it says 1hr 59 minutes, so it is just playing with me.

First impressions: lovely clear screen, easy to programme destinations, but also shocked that something of that price didn't come with a case.

No sign of a free special voice either. Wonder what happened there?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/10/2014 18:35

It is taking the piss now - it said 2 minutes and now it is saying 2hrs 46 mins!!

lougle · 08/10/2014 18:43

I was surprised it didn't come with a plug, tbh.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/10/2014 18:45

It is now stuck on 5 seconds. Hmm

Anyway, I have been playing with the voice control and it is fabulous! You can say any address and it finds the route! I love it! Who needs to take it in the car? It provides endless entertainment at home! I do feel a bit of a tit saying "Hey TomTom" all the time though. I would prefer to be able to name it myself.

bluebump · 08/10/2014 18:52

Mine arrived today, managed to turn it on by accident wrestling it out of the box so had a quick play and i've just plugged it into the laptop so it can do it's updates. It's currently downloading software or something.

It looks very swish, I can't wait to take it out and have a play around.

dozily · 08/10/2014 18:53

Mine has just turned up completely out of the blue!! I had texts from the courier company but nothing from Mumsnet - maybe I entered my email address wrong in the survey

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 19:28

Anne can you really just say 'Hey TomTom'? Or are you just trying to make us all feel like tits?! Wink

( o )

Also, when I've selected James as my voice, why is Serena in control of the voice? Who made her the God of SatNav?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/10/2014 19:32

Well mine has finally finished updating everything so I am ready to go. Can't wait to try it tomorrow.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 19:33

Ah, figured out the Hey TomTom thing. Helps if you read instructions Blush Still don't understand why you have to talk to Serena. She's annoying.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/10/2014 19:34

Yes you can, Looks! You have to switch on the option for automatic wake up with the wake-up command, and then you say "Hey TomTom" and it says "I'm listening" and then beeps. You can then get it go to an address, turn the volume up or down, zoom in or out, loads of stuff. I'm sat here happily playing with it now!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/10/2014 19:34

Cross posts!

Sparklingbrook · 08/10/2014 19:49

Question. What is now different about the device after the 6 hour download? Confused

Squiffie · 08/10/2014 19:49

Up here in Yorkshire the voice control is a tad unresponsive. Hmm

I think it needs to respond to "ey up TomTom"
Grin

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 19:52

No difference that I can see Sparkling, think maps updated or something.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 08/10/2014 19:53

That would be magical if you had to use a Yorkshire accent to wake it up Grin It's very regionist.

SocksRock · 08/10/2014 20:11

Right, mine arrived literally as I was leaving the house to get the kiddos. Only now have I managed to get going with it.

First impression - definitely surprised it doesn't come with a case of some sort, it's pricey kit to be kicking around the footwell because I definitely didn't kill my last satnav that way

I thought the quickstart guide was quite clear to be honest... And the tour was good - not too long and covered the main things to get you started. Like a lot of things, gadgets tend to be easiest to figure out ju.st by playing with them

So far I've managed to get the colours to be a nice jazzy lime, and decided I prefer Jane over Serena.

Update is 9% done with 4 hours to go...

Hopefully it will perform on my commute to work tomorrow!

SocksRock · 08/10/2014 20:15

Hmm. First annoying thing - I'm using Windows 8, and the software doesn't seem compatible? I've installed it via the desktop, and then went back to my preferred Internet Explorer (10?) and it's telling me to install it again. I wanted to get into my account and have a look at accessories available. This means that I have to use Chrome? I would have expected it to be compatible with the major web browsers? Anyone else find this?

Allisgood1 · 08/10/2014 20:22

It took me about 2 min to update but the damn thing doesn't recognize my voice Angry
