NOW CLOSED: Lyclear head lice Treatment Shampoo: Feedback thread: now with final questions added

KatieBMumsnet · 30/08/2013 16:07

This thread is for the 100 unfortunate MNers who have recently experienced head lice and trialled Lyclear Treatment Shampoo.

Here's what Lyclear have to say about their product, "Lyclear Treatment Shampoo is and is as easy to use as washing hair. (1) The unique double action formula suffocates and dehydrates head lice and their eggs and is free from insecticides. The shampoo acts in a purely physical manner, ensuring the head lice do not become resistant to the treatment."

Lyclear Treatment Shampoo is suitable for adults and children over 2 years of age. Note: You should only use Lyclear Treatment Shampoo if you have live head lice. Do not use if allergic to any of the ingredients.*

So if you're a tester we'd like you to add feedback to this thread at least twice: Once when you first use the shampoo and once again after the second application (7 days after the first).

Lyclear says after checking the hair for lice with the fine toothed comb enclosed you should evenly apply the shampoo to dry hair, massaging from root to tip, paying particular attention to the neck and behind the ears. Leave on for 10 minutes then wash and rinse the hair thoroughly. Remove dead head lice and eggs with the fine toothed comb, thoroughly cleaning after use. Repeat the treatment after 7 days.

Please note your comments may be used by Lyclear in marketing material, on their website and possibly elsewhere.

So for your first feedback post please share:

Firstly about head lice:

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  3. What treatments have you tried in the past?

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?
  2. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs
b. Ease of use
c. Convenience
d. Greasiness of treatment
e. Ease of washing out treatment
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:
  2. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?
  3. Any other comments on initial use?
  4. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought

All selected testers who add at least two lots of feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win £250 worth of Love2Shop vouchers.

Thanks and good luck (with everything)

I've re-treated my hair. It's been itching like mad the last 2 days! Found 2 during initial treatment and itching stopped by the next day!
Found none tonight which I'm pleased about but doesn't explain why the intense itching has returned. Hopefully will be ok again now.

Will re-treat DDs tomorrow. Manic day today and no time before bed.

Sorry for the delay. Here's some feedback.

Treated both girls - one aged 9 and the other aged 7. Both have very long, thick hair which makes this whole nits thing hideous. Multiple attacks despite both having their hair tied up all the time. I have used many other treatments before - Hedrin, FullMarks, wet combing, etc.

  1. first treatment. Went on we'll although greasiness had me dreading the 'washing out' process. Comb is useless - teeth way too far apart and I resorted to using others that I have which we're much more effective. Some Lice on both children still alive after the 10 minute period. Washing out blew me away as the product came out so easily and this is the only treatment I have ever tried that hasn't left both the girls with horrid greasy hair for ages afterwards.

Itching on both girls returned after about 3/4 days so I (or the product) must have missed some.

  2. second treatment. Went on well and no complaints from the girls. Again washed out easily. Combed through and pulled out some more - including 'grown-ups'. Some again, still wriggling, so not all had been killed. Did this second treatment on Friday evening and so far, no more itching. I do intend to wet comb this week though to see what happens, although I'm really hoping this works.

So overall - well if you ignore the useless comb and use a nitty gritty, then this is probably my most favoured treatment after simple wet combing with conditioner.

Did second treatment and as expected more lice seeing as they weren't dead after the first application and still weren't dead after second application Hmm. Used Nitty Gritty comb as superior to the one supplied. Unfortunately got impatient and decided to Hedrin her hair today instead which ensured everything was dead.
Won't be using again as for us it doesn't work and whilst it washes out easier than the usual treatments that's not enough of a positive when the lice are still crawling.

Just reading the thread is making me itchy!!
On the basis there doesn't seem to be extra questions for the second application here goes.

DS2 (9) - who has had nits pretty much all summer despite many attempts to clear now seems to be nit free!!! Smile Smile
Second application didn't find anything at all.

DS1 (12) - who we'd previously thought was clear but then found more 10 days ago - first application found probably hundreds of eggs and about 15-20 lice, a few still active so wasn't overly hopeful that the treatment would have worked. Second application last night found no lice at all and a few eggs or egg casings only (less than 10).

DH and I are really impressed that the DC seem finally to be clear after months of attempts. I shall kill any child who reinfects them!!

I would buy this again although comments are

  • Not enough for 8 applications (unless you have hair only a few mm long)
  • £14.99 is loads!

Overall am really impressed - thanks for the free bottle.

Ireallymustbemad · 09/09/2013 08:00

I would add a further comment - the comb isn't half as good as a nitty gritty comb.

Fingers crossed the dc stay free of nits now.

  1. Shampoo used on myself and children aged 9, 5 and 3. (2 boys and 1 girl)

  1. We have had headlice twice before

  1. Treatments in past were Hedrin for children and combing through with not comb for me

  1. I cannot comment on the comb because it was not included in my pack

5 I found shampoo very effective on my children's hair as they have Afro hair which can't be combed

  1. Shampoo very, very easy to use

7 it was very convenient

8 we had no issues with the greasiness, it was as expected for this kind of treatment

9 very easy to wash out

10 smell was ok, as expected for this kind of shampoo. Children did not comment

11 my children were happy to be treated with the shampoo. I find Hedrin and other treatments to be messy and the children complain. There were no problems using the shampoo and I would do so again.

Firstly about head lice:

  1. Shampoo used on DD aged 4 (shoulder length hair)
  2. She hasn't had head lice before
  3. Have tried (not for DD), anti-lice ayurvedic shampoo (brand name Mediker) from India

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. Received fine toothed metal comb (not plastic) which was easy to use - used in combination with a Tangle Teezer
  2. a. Same effectiveness as not got rid of lice. I had got rid of some lice and eggs when checking for lice, before the application. Found few live lice and loads of eggs after the application.
  3. b. Lyclear was better to use. Clear Instructions. Would have helped if a measuring cup was included to measure out the approximate 25ml suggested per application. Or if the bottle included markings.
  4. c. Lyclear's nozzle bottle was better; more convenient to use then the sachets tried in the past.
  5. d. The greasiness was the same; ingredients in both treatments include oil
  6. e. Lyclear was better and easier to wash out.
  7. Yes, the fragrance was pleasant; DD liked it.
  8. Step 3 of the instructions: 'Add sufficient amount of water to the hair to work up foam'. No foam was created - I am not sure if I used enough of the product (though covered hair and scalp as per step no. 2)
  9. Yes, DD liked the shampoo and was excited about using it as she had seen the ad.

But DD still itchy and not got rid of lice...

Applied after 7 days, Haven't seen much improvement and Was struggling with DD about the 10 minutes wait as she hates washing her hair :( Does not look like, the fine toothed comb is getting more lice and eggs as haven't managed to get any out of her hair though she had some. Overall, The 10 minutes wait is the one thing I felt can be reduced!

I'd say the words I would use seeing as dd still had crawling lice would be an expensive. ineffective treatment that in no way meets the claims of its advertising campaign which is also misleading as it makes no mention of the need to comb before and after treatment nor the need to repeat the process after seven days

  1. Did you find that Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was effective at killing all head lice and their eggs after the second treatment?

No dd was still crawling so used Hedrin which ensured the crawling lice were dead.
  1. If you have treated head lice before, did you find Lyclear Treatment Shampoo more effective than previous treatments? Please explain

It wasn't more effective in fact it performed the same service as a cheap bottle of conditioner for 15 times the price
  1. If your child or someone in your family caught head lice again would you buy Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? (RRP £14.99) Please explain

Never! £15 for two treatments that didn't work on dd and a comb that is laughable I consider a complete waste of time and money.
  1. Would you recommend Lyclear Treatment Shampoo to other people? Please explain

No have already told dd's friend's mum not to bother with it and stick with Nitty Gritty and Hedrin as we normally do.
  1. What are your top tips for getting the most out of the treatment?

Use it as a conditioner before you comb using a nitty gritty comb because the greasiness helps the comb to go through easier.

Sorry Lyclear I couldn't be more positive but out of all the treatments I've used on dd I don't remember any of them not killing the adult lice and if that doesn't happen then repeating the process after seven days isn't going to work either as there will be more eggs laid and nits matured in that time.

snorris · 11/09/2013 12:55

I have now done the second treatment on my unfortunate victims volunteers and for us certainly it has been effective. With 3 daughters to do and myself it was easy to have a bit of a production line going of checking, applying, washing and combing. With regard to treating the youngest (aged 4) it was more hassle free than combing with conditioner as she hates having her hair washed so I was able to keep rinsing to the bare essentials. I wouldn't say it is totally non-greasy but it washed off hands well and out of hair and I felt my girls' hair looked good afterwards too.

Prior to the first treatment I had found adult lice on the two older girls and none on the youngest. This time only one of the 10 year olds had some immature lice before application and after treating there were some more on her which were most definitely dead. I didn't find any at all on the other two before or after treatment and I still haven't found any on myself despite still itching Confused. I combed with my nitty gritty comb after using the comb provided and nothing else came out so it has been effective. In addition I noticed the youngest had stopped scratching her head after the first treatment.

I would buy Lyclear if my usual method (combing) wasn't working as it has broken the cycle but it is quite expensive and what happens if they get re-infected from school/nursery? Would you constantly be using Lyclear? I would recommend it though to others as it seems to have worked for us and it is relatively easy to use.

I think there could be some way of gauging how much to use on each person as I seem to have a fair bit left over so I would say don't be afraid to put more on than you think. When I did my second treatment I put more than the first time and got a much better lather. I also found the tip in the instructions about dividing the hair into sections for combing useful as I had never thought about that Blush.

a,b,c, de nitting is never hassle free and always greasy, this shampoo was very slippy.

  1. Did you find that Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was effective at killing all head lice and their eggs after the second treatment? NOT enough left to do second treatments, myself and dd have long hair so with us two and ds that was all used up.

  1. If you have treated head lice before, did you find Lyclear Treatment Shampoo more effective than previous treatments? Please explain

Well we all seem to be nit free after one treatment so works well.

  1. If your child or someone in your family caught head lice again would you buy Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? (RRP £14.99) Please explain

I think so, although would need two bottles to treat everyone in the house.

  1. Would you recommend Lyclear Treatment Shampoo to other people? Please explain

Yes I would, as per above seems to have done the job.

Please copy any relevant answers that apply in your post and add any additional comments

b. Convenient nit treatment never is, but this was as convenient as it gets
c. Easy-to-use please see comment below from my original post on having two smaller bottles in the pack
d. Hassle-free see answer b
e. Non-greasy yes I did not think it was greasy

  1. Did you find that Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was effective at killing all head lice and their eggs after the second treatment? yes
  2. If you have treated head lice before, did you find Lyclear Treatment Shampoo more effective than previous treatments? Please explain definitely more effective than wet combing alone. I felt like I have really got rid of it this time.
  3. If your child or someone in your family caught head lice again would you buy Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? (RRP £14.99) Please explain Yes I would as it has done the trick this time and faster than endless wet combing night after night
  4. Would you recommend Lyclear Treatment Shampoo to other people? Please explain Yes I would as it worked
  5. What are your top tips for getting the most out of the treatment. Really massage it into the roots and scalp

Below is my first lot of feedback before the questions were given
The second treatment was carried out last night on dd.

In the time between the first and the second treatment she did not complain of any more itching, but I wanted her to have the second treatment anyway.

I would have preferred the pack to have two smaller bottles in it so I could completely use one bottle for one treatment then completely use the other. Perhaps they could be labelled with 'first treatment' then 'use in 7 days'. Honestly when you are tired and busy things are not as obvious as they should be when things are less hectic!

Anyway because of this I felt like I did not have as much treatment left for the second application. Perhaps I went too OTT the first time as dd found it so soothing for the itching.

Despite this after applying to hair, leaving then rinsing, the wet combing revealed no more live or dead lice. So fingers crossed for lasting success.

I would use this product again.

Thanks Lyclear.

b. Convenient - about the same as wet combing
c. Easy-to-use - yes

e. Non-greasy - yes, not that greasy but DD's hair is on the dry side usually

  2. If you have treated head lice before, did you find Lyclear Treatment Shampoo more effective than previous treatments?
