This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Below are some questions for you to answer but please do feel free to add any other comments you may also have. Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean Chicken Pasta with Cheesy Crumb Topping
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)?
2/5 Mediocre.
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Ok. Nothing special. A bit bland.
How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
The mix itself was simple to use. I found the dish a bit of a faff to create though. To be fair, pasta bake isn't something I cook really, its not my style. If I were going to make this dish on a regular basis I probably wouldn't muck about with packets and extra chopped tomatoes I would just chuck a jar in.
Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I added mushrooms instead of some of the chicken.
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No. This dish required 2 pans and an ovenproof dish all within the space of twenty minutes. I don't mind doing that but I wouldn't say it was any easier than if I had made it from scratch.
Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
On the evidence of two meals so far its 50/50. I won't be buying this particular mix but maybe some of the others.
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
DH says liked, DS1 wasn't fussed either way, neither was I. It was underwhelming.

Our second go: Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes

This was SUPER easy to use! I stuck to the suggested ingredients aside from using 3 1/2 lb of chicken legs instead of a whole chicken.

I've got roast chicken pretty much how the family likes it and the prep time wasn't that much faster or easier with the packet. The potatoes WERE much crisper and crunchier though which was a massive hit with one of my kids.

I probably wont buy this particular one again because even though the chicken came out lovely and we all liked it (the kids liked the chicken a lot - it all got scoffed) only 1 of the 3 kids liked the potatoes, the younger two (3yo and 1yo) found them too crispy. But if you like crispy like my eldest (5yo) does then it's a win!

The kids rated this on 3/5. Yummy chicken, too crispy potatoes. Sorry Schwartz, you did too good a job on them! :D

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? I did the chicken pasta bake yesterday
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) I would rate it as a 4 out of 5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? We all thought it was quite nice. We weren't too keen on the topping but if/when I make it again I would just use less of the topping.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? I found it really easy to use.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? I followed the recipe on the packet but it would be really nice with mushrooms, more peppers.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? I don't think it made it easier or harder really. About the same as normal.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes I think I would buy them in the future.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? I'd say I liked this one. Looking forward to try the others soon.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
The roast chicken and potatoes one
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The chicken seasoning was ok, but the highlight was the potato mix. My son has never eaten ANYTHING to do with potatoes willingly, not even chips, yet said these were yummy!
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed the recipe on the back but added veggies to our roast meal.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It was easy enough and it meant my son ate potatoes without moaning, so yes, it did make it easier!
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I might buy that one again, if only for the potato mix!
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
I would say I found it easy and delicious.

Which 2in1 recipe Did you try?
The roast chicken and potatoes one, although DP forgot to buy potatoes so we had roast chicken with salad

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)?
3/5 - ok

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
It was nothing special - the skin was flavoursome but meat not so much even though I scored breast and legs before putting it on

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Easy but much more faff than just doing a plain roast chicken

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We didn't have potatoes but followed chicken recipe

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not particularly as it was more faff than just bunging a bit of oil on and putting it in oven which is what I would normally do

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
This is 1st one I've tried and we had it as I had a whole chicken in, not sure I could be bothered with this one again as it is essentially just a flavoured rub and I could put some herbs on chicken from store cupboard for much cheaper and for more flavour. Maybe it wasnt amazing as we didnt have it with the potates! Some of the others look more promising....will try and report back...

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
A bit non plussed - it was ok

shanelle5 · 24/06/2013 22:17

Cooked 2 of the mixes at once for our first go at dinner this evening. We had the southern style with BBQ dip and garlic and herb with cheese and chive dip chicken bites. I served these with Sweet potato wedges and pitta bread so we could use up all the dip. I decided to do both as I have a large family with 4 kids who eat a lot, and this was plenty, clean plates all round even from my fussy eldest teenager!
Would give them both 4 out of 5, and yes would buy again as my teens like a bit of junk food and this felt like I was giving them a more healthy version of chicken nuggets! Proper chicken breast, and home made dips has to be better than pre packaged reformed chicken strips/nuggets.
For the flavour - we'd rate the garlic and herb one better, but strangely we did not think this looked that nice. Quite pale, looked like balls of stuffing! Also the cheese and chive dip that went with it, same deal - looked pretty yuk but tasted lovely! The kids all liked this dip a lot. I preffered the BBQ dip. We did all like the southern style chicken but the garlic and herb won hands down. Shame about the look of it.
Yes followed the recipe exactly, No dont think it made it any easier, infact its more time consuming making your own chicken pieces and dips than opening a packet but much better as I said, also they enjoyed making tea together. One dipped in the egg and coated chicken, the other made dips. It was fun but no, not easier.
Yes would definately buy again for the reasons mentioned. I would feel better about my teens eating these chicken nuggets than pre-made packaged ones. I would say we liked rather than loved them, but its close! : )

Tonight we've tried the Chicken Tikka. I'd give it 3.5 out of 5. DH and I enjoyed it. DS1, 2.10, is a rather fussy eater and wouldn't try it or the raita. DS2, 8mo tried it all and enjoyed the raita, but I think the chicken was too spicy for him. (Incidentally, it would have been nice to have a breakdown of the nutrition information for the two components, so I was more informed as to how much salt he was having.) DH found the recipe mix easy to use (he does most of the cooking here, and is a very good cook). He pretty much followed the recipe, although we didn't have any red onion so used white instead. He didn't think the spice mix significantly saved him any time compared to using a curry paste. I'm not sure we'd buy this one again. It was nice, we enjoyed it, but I don't think it gave us significant benefit compared to other curry pastes we've used before. Overall, I'd say we liked this spice mix.

Questions

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Southern Style Chicken with bbq dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

4

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

it was nice - the bbq sauce was genius, as we often end up binning 3/4 full bottles of bbq sauce that just haven't been used (well, have binned 3 in 10 years!) because we use it so infrequently, so being able to make a really small amount up was great. DH and I liked the chicken and the sauce, DS was unconvinced by the sauce, but liked the chicken, and DD just rubbed it into her eyes and cried.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

very easy

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

followed the recipe

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

not really, but it didn't make it any harder - I make chicken schnitzel and chicken nuggets fairly often, and wouldn't say that this mix made it much easier than my usual flour/egg/breadcrumb routine does! loved the bbq sauce though.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

this one, yes, as we quite liked it. It tasted nice, and was pretty easy to follow.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

liked it

Questions

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

chicken tikka and raita

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

2

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

it was lethal - far far too hot. we made the chicken edible by scraping the coating off and the coating it in raita, but even then it was fierce. DH found the coating very bitter and unpleasant. DS took one bit of chicken, and cried, and refused to eat the raita, and we didn't let DD have the chicken, but she rubbed the raita into her hair quite happily.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

easy

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

followed it apart from the red onion, as raw onion disagrees violently with me. I served it with green beans and pitta breads.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

if it had tasted nice, then yes, it would have been easier than my usual curry recipes.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

not this one, as none of the family liked it.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I disliked it, rest of the family hated it.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic & Herb Crunchy Chicken Bites

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)?
Somewhere between 0 (my oldest) and 2(one of the friends who popped in whilst we were eating).

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The chicken was reasonable. The crumby coating was a bit too lumpy. The real downside was the dip. Utterly revolting. 4 of the 7 people around the table refused to even try it. The 3 who did only stomached one taste. I have chives in the garden. I should have just added them to some yogurt and mayo. Definitely not a good idea to add the grated cheese to the dip, not a hit.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
The chicken coating was simple enough but the dip was a bit of a faff. You need mayo, yogurt and grated cheese for this one and the results meant those ingredients were wasted. The dip went pretty much entirely into the bin.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the recipe on the packet and I wish we hadn?t
.
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Unfortunately not because nobody really wanted to eat the chicken bites. DS3 always claims he doesn?t like chicken anyway. This did nothing to change his mind. My DH makes lovely garlic chicken bites. I wish I?d just left him in the kitchen to get on with it!

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
On the basis of this recipe we wouldn?t consider buying them again. It wasn?t particularly labour saving, it didn?t have very good results and unfortunately it didn?t all get eaten ? the bin was fuller than DS1?s tummy.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
This one gets a thumbs down from us. We won?t be eating this recipe again.

All these mnetters across the country having the same chicken dishes for dinner :)

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Tried the chicken tikka one
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

Would rate it a 3.5 out of 5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Thought it was quite spicy actually must be a wimp! and DS is 2 so didn't eat it

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Found it really easy however the marinating over night would need planning ahead rather than the usual sorting dinner out with no planning we usually do!

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Followed it other than had no cucumber so couldn't put it in the raita mix - think it would've tasted better with it in tbh

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It made it easier in taking the decision making out of the evening but as above the having to plan ahead with overnight marinating etc made it less easy

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Probably would buy it again, nice to have variety in dinners

We liked it :)

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Tonight was DD1's turn to cook and she used the mediterranean pasta & crispy crumb topping. However, we had no chicken defrosted, so she adapted the recipe and used tuna & sweetcorn instead.

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

I'm not a mad fan of tuna past bake but this version was a little bit zingy and the herby topping was a definite upgrade from our usual one made with crisps! So overall I'd say a 4. I think i'd like to try it using chicken next time though.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

DD2 was away at camp, so didn't try it. But DD1 loved it. We both had second helpings Blush Grin

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

DD1 had no difficulty whatsoever, once she's got a recipe in front of her she goes onto autopilot Grin

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

She swapped chicken for tuna & sweetcorn! But didn't add anything else.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

So much easiern tonight as I was busy finishing the cleaning and could just let DD1 get on with it! All I did was make a nice side salad to go with it - lovely Smile

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes definitely.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I liked it, a handy addition to the store cupboard.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Garlic & Thyme Roast Chicken & Crispy Roast Potatoes

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

4/5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

5 year old was not impressed but he doesn't really like much at the moment, so I wouldn't expect anything else. Myself and DH liked the flavour of the chicken although it's not a very strong flavour. Potatoes were nice and crispy and tasted nice but I wasn't keen on the texture

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I did it as instructed

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

No, I wouldn't say it made it easier

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Probably not, but not because we didn't like it, it was tasty but personally I wouldn't go out of my way to buy the packet when you can do it without. If the rub for the chicken was available on its own, I would probably buy that

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

We liked it

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)?
4/5 on average

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
We cooked these alongside the Garlic and Herb bites. This was vastly better. A nice flavour. DS3 has always said he doesn?t like chicken. On eating his ?orange chicken? he was heard to announce ?I like chicken now!? The BBQ dip was good too.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy to use. The dip was just ketchup and the mix from the packet. DS2 enjoyed assisting with this. The mixture coated the chicken well.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the recipe on the packet but added a bit more ketchup to the dip as there wasn?t really enough to go around. My DH claims to be a BBQ dip expert and he said it still tasted ok.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
I wouldn?t say it really made mealtimes easier. We are pretty used to making up our own coatings for chicken so usually have a pot of mixed spices to hand. However, the boys enjoyed having something a bit different and the BBQ dip made a nice change from ketchup/mayo.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
We might consider using this again, but it wouldn?t really provide enough to feed a family of 5. To be honest, I?d probably prefer to stick with making up our own coatings.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
We liked this. I only wish we?d received 2 packets of this and not bothered with the Garlic and Herb. Children might not have been returning asking for more to eat an hour later if all the chicken had been ?orange?.

- Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean Pasta & Crispy Crumb Topping

- How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
I liked the flavour, it had an expected zing, but not too much for the dcs. My two eldest dcs liked it a lot but my dh thought it was quite bland.

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was very easy to make, following the instructions on the packet and lovely and quick.

- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
There are six of us so I increased the amounts slightly and my dh used my pepper in a salad so I had to leave that out! Even though the sauce was a bit diluted due to the extra ingredients I don't think it made a big difference, it was still tasty (although this could have been why dh found it bland...)

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It did make it easier, it was quick and easy to do and uses mainly freezer/store cupboard ingredients (I always have chicken in the freezer) so very handy if in a bind.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would keep a packet of this in the cupboard, for those days when I can't be bothered to do something more labour intensive! I would also like to try it with tuna and sweetcorn, even easier than frying chicken and chopping pepper!

- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

We liked this recipe mix.

Moodykat · 25/06/2013 12:22

We tried the Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes

We would give it 5/5.

We really liked it. The crispy potatoes were lovely, I have never used a topping on roast potatoes before and it was yummy. The chicken was also very tasty and we all had clean plates!

It was very easy to use, but surely that is the point of a packet mix?!

We followed the recipe exactly, although the chicken was roasted all the way through without tinfoil as we had run out!

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would say that the 2in1 recipe mix made last nights meal easier as it almost took the thinking out of the cooking! And after a long day at work and then coming in with the kids, thinking is often something I am not capable of doing!

I think I probably would buy this flavour again - can't wait to try the others!

very easy to use

I followed the recipe for this one
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It wasn't as easy as buying ready made chicken dippers, but it was easy to make and felt much healthier and only took an extra 10 minutes
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
yes i would buy them again for a change. we all enjoyed it and it made a nice meal served with oven cooked 'chips' and salad
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Tonight we did Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites + cheese & chive dip.

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) DH says 5, DS says 4, DD says 3. I didn't have any cos I'm going out for dinner - yayyy!

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
This one was very popular. Everyone liked the chicken and DH LOVED the sauce. In DH's opinion this is the best one yet (have done the tikka and the southern-style so far). I had a little taste of the sauce and thought it was v nice.
How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Very, very easy.
Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Followed the recipe exactly (polishes halo). Added salad and veg to the final dish.
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes - it was nice not to have to think what to make and to serve something the family wouldn't usually have.
Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes - being won over now. Would probably look to buy, and buy, the mixes. DH certainly would and he does a lot of the cooking in these parts.
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? Kids liked it. DH loved it.

Mediterranean Chicken Pasta.

Give this 4 out of 5.

Very good flavour quite strong. DP says it easy 'contradictory, but I don't know what he means by that!

Easy to use, I enjoyed making it.

I followed the packet instructions, but added some steamed fine beans at the same time as adding the pasta.

Didn't make it easier, but I certainly felt as though I'd out in a good effort to give my family a tasty meal.

Yes, I'd use this mix again.

Overall, we all liked it a lot.
