This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Below are some questions for you to answer but please do feel free to add any other comments you may also have. We'd like you to post at least 3 sets of feedback - answering the same questions for each recipe mix you try. Please also upload any pictures you take of your creations. Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern Style Crunchy Chicken & BBQ dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
DTD's refused to eat the chicken, so I removed it, sliced it and then they loved it (they are 2.5 so notoriously fussy) I also really liked the dip, it would be useful to buy as I occasionally buy BBQ sauce but it usually goes off as it's rarely used, much easier to mix herbs & seasoning into ketchup.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
very easy to use
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed the recipe
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
About the same, I usually put rice crispies with paprika & Parmesan in the blender and use that as a coating. I think for people who usually just buy freezer products or ready meals it is a good step to starting to actually cook & follow recipes (I don't mean that to sound patronising I learnt to cook starting with El Paso Grin )
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Possibly

Today we tried the Southern Style Crunchy Chicken Bites and BBQ Dip which we would rate as a family 4/5.

I thought this was a tasty midweek recipe which was extremely easy to make (I did say even "can't cook, won't cook" DH would be able to do it). My DH who is not really a chicken lover (not great for the taste testing but he is happy to do it) that he really enjoyed them and he particularly liked the BBQ dip and it was "better than the crap you get on takeaway pizzas". DS1 (age 5) said he really liked it, it was on the "yummy" end of the scale when asked but not quite as yummy as chocolate. DS2 (14 months) went back for more and didn't throw any on the floor which is a very good indication he enjoyed it. Personally I liked the chicken, thought it could do with a little more pepper in the mix to make it more "southern style" and I don't like BBQ dip (or ketchup for that matter) so that was wasted on me. I liked how easy it was though and how the chicken was certainly better quality than the equivalent you would find in the freezer aisle.

I followed the recipe exactly however next time I will add some back pepper in at the egg coating stage. This recipe did make the mealtime easier as it was so simple and if I wasn't photographing it for the review doesn't cause many dishes to wash up (dishwasher free family).

Overall we did like this mix and we have already agreed we would buy it again. We said that we felt it wouldn't go too well with hot vegetables but it went really well with salad which is how we would serve it each time.

First mix from the Schwartz 2in1 range i used was Garlic & Thyme Roast Chicken + Crispy Roast Potatoes. The back of the packet had clear easy instructions to follow and was easy to open with one part on the top and other on the bottom. Starting with the chicken, i mixed the seasoning with oil and after scoring the chicken many times i brushed on the mix and bunged it in the oven. The potato mix was easy peasy, par boling them for 10 mins, covering them in the powder and placing in a roasting tray with pre heated oil and also putting them in oven. Ok so for the results! as you can see from my picture, the dishes looked amazing :) The potaoes were delicious, perfect balance of flavours, just right. The chicken was very nice, m husband and daughter were ver impressed, the flavour went all the way through and was ver distinctive, myself though i thought it was just a bit too overpowering. Anyways overall this product was very easy to use and added a little something extra to our Sunday dinner.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean chicken pasta with cheesy crumb topping (made with tuna and sweetcorn).

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3 out of 5.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
DP thought it was nice, I thought it was average. We both agreed that the cheesy crumb topping was a nice addition. DS (3) didn't like it too much and DD (7 months) had a few bits of pasta - it was quite a salty recipe mix so I was conscious not to give the DC too much.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was very easy to use.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Substituted the chicken and peppers for tuna and sweetcorn.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
It was easy to prepare and quick to cook and was a meal which could be pulled together using store cupboard ingredients.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'm not sure I would buy this recipe mix again, particularly for the DC currently due to overall salt content.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
It was OK, but we probably didn't like it enough to have it again.

babsmam · 25/06/2013 19:17

We have not tried southern style crunchy chicken bites. I added potato wedges and pease.
I would give it 5/5
It went down very well with the adults and children in the house. The flavour was nice but not too spicy and overpowering.
It was very easy to use and we followed the packet.
It did make mealtime easier as it was just so quick to do.
I would buy this again but not regularly due to the salt contents
Liked it

doughnut44 · 25/06/2013 19:25

We had Garlic and Thyme chicken and roast potatoes. Recipe was really easy to follow. I would give it 5/5 for ease of use and taste. My children for once complained that they couldn't have seconds (I didn't make enough). They loved it. Really easy to use and def made my cooking easier because I didn't have to start messing around crushing garlic etc.
Can't wait till next one

Today, we have made Chicken Tikka and Raita dip

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Tikka and Raita
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
Myself and DH thought 4/5 ~ the Tikka was really tasty (I had marinated it overnight) the dip scores 3/5. DCs only tried the chicken and thought it was nice.
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Good, DD said it was spicy but DS enjoyed it very much.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Simple to make, it is just yoghurt, chicken and spices though so hardly difficult without the sachet.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Recipe was followed closely except I finely chopped the cucumber instead of grating it ~ just wanted more texture.... I did serve the Tikka and dip with Rice and Bombay Potato.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
We did enjoy the taste of this mix but I dont think mealtimes were made easier by using it to be honest.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, we have tried 2 packets so far and both have exceeded my expectations Smile
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Loved it, not fussed about the dip though!

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Southern Style Crunchy Chicken Bites and BBQ Dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

DH rated this 4, DD 3, me 2

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

DH really liked this - he said the spicyness was just right and the BBQ dip was perfect with it. DD seemed to enjoy it but wasn't very vocal about it, and I found I didn't like the peppery after-taste (but then I'm quite fussy).

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy. This week is the first time I've used packet mixes like this and I definitely can see myself using them again.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Followed the recipe exactly.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Easier in so far as I didn't have to think about what I was cooking. Certainly they have made mealtimes interesting this week!

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. It is nice to have a change without too much effort, and with these you know you are getting good quality meat, rather than pre-made items you have no idea about.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

DH really enjoyed this one. I liked it because it was an easy dish to make and it proved popular.

I tried the Mediterranean pasta + garlic and herb crispy crumb. I made it with tuna as I love tuna bakes and wanted to give it a go.
For a packet mix I would give it 5/5. My husband, DD and I all loved the taste, especially the crumbly layer. I make lots of pasta bakes from scratch and have never thought of doing this before.
It was really easy to make, especially as all I had to cook was the pasta then mix everything together. I followed the recipe on the back but in future would probably add pineapple and capsicum. It was such an easy dinner so I got to spend more time with the family instead of slaving over the stove. All the ingredients can be kept in the cupboard until needed.
Being pregnant, this is definitely the easy meal that will work well with a new bub as it is super quick and easy. I will definitely be looking for this one to keep in the cupboard for an easy dinner at the end of year - and before then as well! I loved the Mediterranean Pasta 2in1 mix.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

The Mediterranean chicken with cheesy garlic crumb topping.

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

It tasted like a packet mix. It was quite salty and I do generally use salt in my cooking, so I'm used to it. The flavours were very punchy.

DH and DD both really enjoyed it however.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I cooked it according to what I had in the cupboard Wink As suggested as an alternative, I used tuna in the mix rather than chicken. I discovered that I didn't have any tinned tomatoes so I used passata instead. And I didn't put any cheese on it because I don't like cheese!

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

No. I didn't find that there was any advantage to using the recipe mix over cooking from scratch, it didn't make it any more convenient for me.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not this one. The flavours weren't great, and if I were going to dirty a chopping board and a pan following the instructions on this mix, I might as well just make a pasta sauce from scratch.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

It was ok. To be fair, it was the one I had the most reservations about, and I will reserve judgement until I've tried a couple of the others I'm more enthused on.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Chicken tikka

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

3.5/5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
DH and I thought it was nice but lacked a bit of flavour. Had a bit of heat to it, but not much of a strong tikka flavour.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very simple
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed the recipe but drizzled with little extra oil before grilling as I thought it might be a bit dry. And I put the chunks of chicken onto wooden skewers to make it easier to turn
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Was very simple do made mealtime easier

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
DC though it was 'very good' and 'yum', polishing it all off very quickly. DH and I liked it too. DH didn't know it was a packet recipe.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I used sweet corn and chicken as DC not keen on peppers. I also made the chicken mix the day before and kept it in fridge as the chicken needed to be cooked that day to stay within its sell by date! Added cooked pasta and topping just before heating.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes it was easier
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I probably would buy again as the DC ate it all happily

I liked it, DC loved it
cocoplops · 25/06/2013 21:37

Forgot to say halved the bake as DC ate earlier. Grilled theirs but baked other uncooked half as wanted to heat up pasta as well. 30min 175c -topping looked tad dry but pasta wasn't and was still nice and moist.

Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip

5yo said it was "really good" and ate it all without a fuss. Fussy 3yo said it was too spicy but then ate it all too. Little 1yo did very well with it, didn't finished eveyrthing on his plate but ate most of the chicken and ALL of the BBQ sauce.

It was VERY easy to use. Found it hard to make my usual 5min review video it was so easy. I sis stick the the instructions and recipie apart from the size of my chicken pieces which were chunks not strips.

We liked this 2-in-1 and I can see us buying it again, probably try it with wraps and salad, or with something other than chicken.

We gave this one 4/5

Which recipe mix did you try?

  • The Southern style crunchy chicken & BBQ dip. We had it with wedges and salad.

How would you rate it out of 5?

  • We all liked it and would give it 4 out of 5

What did you think of the overall flavour?

  • DH liked the fact the coating isn't greasy and that it was quite spicy. I liked the smokiness of the BBQ dip and the DC's loved the dip and armed to like the chicken too as sometimes they can be a bit fussy about breaded chicken (unless it's KFC popcorn chicken )

How easy was it to use?

  • A bit fiddly coating the chicken as you need 2 dishes and a baking tray but fairly quick to do and the dip takes a few seconds!

Did you follow the recipe?

  • Yes

Did it make mealtime easier?

  • I'm ashamed to say I've always meant to but never got around to making my own chicken nuggets so it was good to try this one and yes nice and easy as the coating is pre mixed and the dip means you don't need a bottle of dip sitting in the fridge which rarely gets used.

Would you buy it again?

  • Yes I would use this mix again.

Did you love or hate it?

  • Everyone said they would eat it again so it's got to be love!
jodee · 25/06/2013 21:59

For Sunday Roast we had the Garlic & Thyme roast chicken and crispy roast potatoes

I would have given it 5/5 as I really enjoyed both the chicken and spuds but reduced my mark to 4/5 because DH loved the potatoes but not the garlic and thyme on the chicken, DS was the opposite.

Also, DH is a bit "funny" about having a chicken for Sunday roast as we have chicken during the week and he prefers beef or pork.

I did think the roast potatoes didn't crisp up as much as usual, but that could be down to the amount of oil I used (not enough).

mrscog · 25/06/2013 22:12

- Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Chicken tikka with Raitia

- How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 5! That is high praise from me but it was really good. DH said it was as good as a takeaway taste but actually better as you can use ethically sourced chicken. DS (16MO) ate some too, which is a compliment as he doesn't like anything other than Ready Brek at the moment.

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? We all thought the flavour was excellent. I was sceptical about the dip as I'd normally make my own seeing as I keep mint in the garden, but to be honest I think the extra garlic/onion powder really added to the overall taste. The chicken was an excellent texture and I found there was enough mix to cover all the pieces properly.

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Very easy.

- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Not exactly - I didn't have a lemon so I used lime juice, and my grill isn't working so I oven baked it all for 20mins. I served with some roasted cherry tomatoes (went AMAZINGLY well), and a naan bread for DH and salad for me .

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? I think this one did make the mealtime easier - I think as the flavour is so spot on, it's nice not ferretting around through the spice draw looking for all the spices.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? This one, definitely, I was really impressed.

- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? Loved!

- Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Southern Chicken with BBQ dip.

- How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) Ok - mixed, the southern style chicken coating I would rate 5, the dip 1.

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? Loved the flavour of the southern chicken on it's own, but the BBQ dip was no different to BBQ sauce you buy in a bottle and was WAY too overpowering. DS didn't try any but he was giggling away at the rolling the chicken in the coating part - obviously something very amusing about that to a toddler!

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Very easy

- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Stuck to the recipe, but I particularly liked the fact that these were oven bake. So often things like this are shallow fry and I hate the unhealthiest and mess that shallow frying causes.

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Slightly easier for this type of dish.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I don't know, I have very mixed feelings about this one. I loved the chicken coating and if I could just buy a large jar of that to keep in the cupboard I would definitely buy again. However, I don't want to be buying the BBQ dip it doesn't really go with the flavour of Southern Chicken, it's too high in sugar and I hate to waste things so I'd be left with umpteen packets of the stuff unused.

- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? Loved the chicken, hated the sauce. Please please please consider manufacturing a big jar of the chicken coating - I would definitely buy that!

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Mediterranean chicken pasta & crumb topping
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
We thought the pasta sauce tasted similar to a fairly cheap jar of pasta sauce and was also slightly metallic. The topping was really tasty but did smell a bit like pot noodle when I put it on which worried me!
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed the recipe and added sweetcorn and probably extra cheese.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
The sauce part of the mix didn't make much difference but the crumb topping was easier an quicker than making my own breadcrumbs.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don't think I would buy this product in the future as I think pasta sauces are already quite easy to make from scratch. I might consider buying a mix that was just a topping for pasta bakes.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Overall we liked this product.

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

I liked the crumb topping flavour and texture, but found the flavour of the sauce a bit too reminiscent of student pasta dishes where you'd just add some random herbs to some tinned tomato and hope for the best. I used tuna and sweetcorn rather chicken and that worked OK. However, the overall flavour wasn't bad. DH thought it was "good" (man of few words, that's fairly effusive for him). I didn't tell him it came out of a packet though, or he'd have gone mad: he is pretty fixed in his views of how things should be prepared and would consider packets like this a big waste of money when you can make everything yourself from scratch. Even f I'd told him it was a free sample he'd have ranted about it being a gimmick which we don't need.

DS (aged 2) spurned it, but he does sometimes just refuse to eat things for no apparent reason, so I wouldn't take that too personally.

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy. Although the bit where you have to tear down the side of the pack is a bit annoying, it doesn't tear very easily or evenly, meaning bits of powder got spilled everywhere. Also it doesn't divide into 2 separate sachet sections easily, which is annoying; would be better if it was perforated between the 2 sections for easier separation.

- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed the recipe and used tuna and sweetcorn rather than chicken and peppers, just because that's what I had to hand, didn't add any other bits. I served it with extra steamed greens on the side.

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

To be honest, not really. I could just as easily have made a quick tomato sauce with an onion and some herbs, or indeed opened a jar of pasta sauce and it wouldn't really have taken any longer, especially as I wouldn't need to follow a recipe as it would already be in my head. I guess theoretically it takes the thinking time out of deciding what to have for tea, but you still have to look at the packet, consult list of ingredients, decide if you have those or could make some substitutions, in which time you could have just looked in the fridge/cupboard and come up with a similar idea.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not for this particular recipe, as I don't think it would represent good value for money as compared with, say, a jar of sauce, but I will reserve judgement on the range til I've tried the others.

- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

This one I liked and so did my partner.

3

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

DH and DDs quite liked the chicken, but said it just flavoured the skin really, not the actual chicken. We all liked the potatoes for flavour, and it made a change from normal roast potatoes but wasn't nicer - just different.

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Extremely easy.

I followed the recipe, but also stuck a lemon in the chicken which is what I would normally do when roasting a chicken.

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

I don't think this mix made doing a roast any easier or harder. It's basically just adding a different flavour just sprinkled on.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I wouldn't buy this one, the meal was no nicer than an ordinary roast chicken dinner.

- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I would say everyone liked it - but not more than an ordinary roast dinner.
