This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

I might buy this one, but not at over a quid,

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
  • Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites + cheese & chive dip
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5
highest) 5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
My daughter again unwilling to give it a go. She wanted the coating taken off. My son ate it without any fuss so must have liked it. I liked it.......haha yay. One I actually liked. This is my kind of thing though. The dip flavour was lovely and strong which made up for the mild flavour of the chicken coating.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Added less cheese as I use strong cheese and it was still a bit too much but apart from that I followed it.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Wouldn't say easier just different.

Maybe if we fancied a change.

- Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
We are a family of 6 so did both the Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites and cheese & chive dip and the southern style chicken and BBQ dip.

- How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites - DS1 gave this 4.5 and DS2 gave it 5! I would give it 4.

Southern style chicken and BBQ dip - Both DS's gave this 5 and I would give it 4.

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The southern style chicken was a massive hit and both ds's and I loved the bbq dip. The garlic and herb chicken had a subtler flavour but again the the boys loved it. DS2 and I loved the cheese and chive dip but ds1 wouldn't even taste it! I was very concerned when I saw the cheese and chive dip as it looked a bit ropey but I really liked the taste.

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was very easy to use, ds1 helped me make the chicken bites and ds2 made the dips (quite messily!)

- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the recipe to the letter with the southern style chicken.
I didn't want to buy a pot of yoghurt to just use 3 tsp in the dip so I used all mayo in the cheese and chive dip, which was fine.

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not really as if I was going to have chicken dippers I would probably just buy them.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think that we would buy these mixes as it was an easy meal that the kids loved and was great for them to help me with. I loved having the dips especially the bbq which was delicious and v easy to make.

- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

We loved these mixes.

- Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic and thyme roast chicken with crispy roast potatoes

- How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
2

- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
I found the chicken mix very synthetic tasting, although the potatoes were nicer.

- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy to use.

- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed the recipe exactly.

- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not really, I do pretty good roast chicken and roast potatoes anyway so felt that this did not help or enhance the meal at all.

- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not this particular mix, but I have enjoyed the other ones that I have used.
- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
I have to say that I hated this mix.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) - 3.5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? - the seasoning tasted nice, but it was limited to the chicken skin and potatoes, didn't absorb into the chicken. The chicken was quite dry. The potatoes were nice.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? - really easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? - followed the recipe exactly.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? - This one didn't make mealtime prep any easier. I usually do a fairly simple roast chicken recipe anyway that tastes great and produces a juicier chicken.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Maybe. I'd be more inclined to buy it if it were on offer.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? Somewhere in between.

Here's our 5th and final review! Thanks very much for the opportunity to try these recipe mixes.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Our final recipe mix was for the garlic chicken bites with cheese and chive dip.
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4.5. This was very popular with DH and the DDs. Knocked half a point off because the DDs didn't like the dip, although to be fair, I think that this was their fault, not the fault of the dip. (I loved the dip and finished it off with some pitta fingers and carrot sticks)
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Dh and the DDs really liked this one, said it was tasty and crunchy. DH said it was his favourite of the 5 mixes we have tested. The children didn't like the dip - dd1 said she would have rather have had the bbq dip from the Southern chicken bites (that was her favourite thing we tested.)
How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy.
Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I added slightly more yoghurt - and I used Greek yoghurt, because that's what I had in the fridge. Added less of the mayonnaise. We also had pitta fingers and carrot and cucumber sticks with it - it does make quite a lot of dip.
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think this did make it easier. Very straightforward and easy to do, took next to no time to prepare.
Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think this one would be a contender, yes. I preferred this one to the other crunchy bites one, because I liked the dip and I could eat that with veggies, so it saved making a whole different meal for me, which I often end up doing.
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it
I'd say liked a lot.
This one was DH's favourite, and he loved the bites and the dip.
He also loved the pasta bake - which was DD2's favourite - although this one was close.
DD1 loved both the crunchy bites, but only liked the bbq dip (which she loved) and didn't like the cheese and chive dip at all.

ilovepicnmix · 08/07/2013 20:45

4th review. Southern style chicken and BBQ dip. I made it for me, ex, our son and step sons. We all enjoyed it but the boys scored it 5 and said it was exactly like KFC. To them this was a compliment! Boys loved the flavour, adults thought it was fine. I followed the recipe exactly but I forgot to put the dip on the table so it wasn't used. It made mealtime easy but then I wouldn't normally make stuff like this. We had it with mac cheese and salad. I probably wouldnt buy it but maybe when my son is older as he's only one. Me and ex liked the flavour, the boys loved it and the wee one hated it but he won't eat chicken at the mo.

5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Me and dh loved it, it smelt like some of the other packets so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much, but I was nicely surprised Dd only nibbled one chicken bit then ate one small piece once the bread crumbs were off
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
This one was very easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
I followed the recipe with how to make the chicken and dip, then put it in a salad and dipped it in the sauce

It gave something good to eat without having to think too hard, as you can put them with lots of other things to make a good meal. Like I said with the other reviews it can create more washing up.

Review#4

lottietiger · 08/07/2013 21:59

We tried the southern style chicken and BBQ dip last night. It was very easy to prepare as long as you have tomato ketchup to hand. The dip tasted really good, chicken was nice but not as crunchy as I expected, may have been my cooking. I'd buy this one again as it was good for a summer evening with a big salad and new potatoes or wedges.

Review for Chicken Tikka & Mint & Cucumber Raita:
Last night we tried out this recipe mix for tea and although it was nice enough, Im not so sure I will be buying it again. As a family we rate this 3/5. It was easy enough to prepare, although a little fiddly which is how we feel about the other packet mix's we have tried in this trial. As a busy Mum, I don't have much time to be 'faffing' around, and to be honest, there wasn't enough seasoning to prepare a big enough meal to feed a family of 5.

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

They really liked it and it had the rght amount of spice for them, DP and I liked it, it made a nice cahnge for dinner

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Really easy, its just mix and go! :)

I didn't have a red onion so I used very finely sliced Asparagus with the cucumber instead. It was delicious.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

In this case yes, I marinated the chicken in the morning which took only a couple of minutes and the grilling only took 10 mins max which is good for something quick and a bit different.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would, I would like to try it with Salmon or Lamb.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Southern chicken bites.

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Thought it was a lovely flavour, not too bland and not too spicy. A really good alternative to takeaway chicken. DH and DS both ate it and enjoyed it.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy indeed.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Used chicken thighs/drumsticks instead of breast fillets.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Definitely - don't have the time or the inclination to make breadcrumbs from scratch for a weekday dinner so this is a really easy alternative and made dinner quick to prepare.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would consider this one again, although the dip is fairly pointless (though tasty).

Garlic and herb chicken bites.

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

4

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

I liked it, and DH absolutely loved it, especially the dip.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Used basa fillets instead of chicken and creme fraiche in the dip instead of yoghurt. Neither seemed to matter much and I thought the coating worked very well with the fish.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, definitely, the crumbs were really even and coated the fish much better than when I have tried to make my own breaded fish.

Yes.

I made the southern-style chicken bites with bbq mix which went down really well. It was easy to make and everyone loved the flavour. I'd give it 4/5 and would certainly look out for it again in the shops as it makes a nice change and tastes so much fresher than the frozen ready-made ones I've bought in the shops before. I think it's a brilliant solution for people like me, who want food that is fresh and tastes homemade but don't have the time to make every meal from scratch. I'd say we loved this one again.

My parents came over for lunch on Sunday so we made the Garlic & Thyme Roast Chicken & Crispy roast potatoes. As it was so hot I cut the potatoes up into small cubes so didn't have to boil them first & then served with salad & coleslaw.

I'd probably give it 3/5 overall. We all thought the chicken had a nice flavor but it wasn't particularly strong, the potatoes were a bit disappointing as they weren't as crispy as I'd hoped.

The mix was really easy to use, I just coated the chicken as it said & shoved it in the oven, same with the potatoes. But then again it didn't save me any time as I would have done the same anyway.

I pretty much followed the recipe but as I said I cut the potatoes up quite small so skipped out the par boiling.

I wouldn't have said it made it any easier as it's pretty easy to rub oil & herbs onto a chicken without a mix & I would usually make the potatoes with garlic & Rosemary which would have taken just as long.

I probably wouldn't buy this mix again as we didn't think it added that much flavor to the chicken & the potatoes were a bit of a let down. It definitely didn't save me any time so I don't think it would be worth spending the money on a mix when I could have just used the herbs I already have and probably get just as good a result.

I wouldn't say I hated the mix, it seems like a good idea but we just thought it was a bit mediocre.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Garlic & Thyme Roast Chicken and Crispy Potatoes

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

3

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

The crispy potatoes tasted nice, but the mix didn't really add much. The chicken flavour was limited to the skin which we pull off as we are all watchin our weight so that was dissappointing. I did score the chicken but the flavour did not penetrate.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

It was easy enough.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed the recipe

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

No not on this occasion. I would normally roast the chicken plain and the potatoes just go straight in to hot oil so the mix added to the work.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I might, but not this particular one

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

This was disappointing so I would go with hate though it seems a bit strong. It just didn't deliver any flavour.
