NOW CLOSED: Tesco’s Naturally Powered (antibacterial spray or non-bio washing powder) product testers review thread

AnnMumsnet · 01/05/2012 14:54

This thread is for the 1000 Mumsnetters who are trying out the Naturally Powered range of cleaning products by Tesco.

If you don't know about these products, here's what Tesco has to say:

"In the past, green cleaning products have been let down by their performance. Working closely with a team of chemists, scientists and environmental experts, we have created the Naturally Powered range of eco cleaning products - specially formulated to have a reduced impact on the environment than other leading products and with the cleaning performance you'd expect."

Mumsnetters have been testing either the antibacterial spray or the non-bio washing powder. In addition, all testers received a trial-sized sachet of washing up liquid.

If you are a tester, please state which product you were testing and answer the questions below - feel free to also add any other comments you may have.

Everyone who adds their comments to this thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one person will win £200 of Tesco vouchers.

Questions:

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? I was more than happy to go into it with an open mind, and I loved the smell of the spray

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? Like the smell, like the feel, performance not so great. I tried it in the kitchen, not so bad, but on the bathroom it was hopeless.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? Worse, I would say

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? If the price was similar I wiuld buy green, if not, I would not buy an overpriced product.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? No, I found it ineffectual

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? Stronger and more powrful, while retaining the lovely scent.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? No, please see above.

TheMonster · 08/05/2012 18:52

An update on mine! The spray has been fabulous on my hob. DP always lets things burn on and they are a nightmare to get off - the spray, left on for about ten mins, and wiped (using a bit of elbow grease) with kitchen towel, worked much better than Dettol kitchen spray and a scourer! Well impressed!

PartOfAWednesday · 08/05/2012 19:06

Really, Eeyore? I'm off to try that right now.

SayHelloToMyLittleFriend · 08/05/2012 19:10

I tried out the antibacterial spray.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? I had never heard about this range before.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? I've used the spray in my kitchen, bathroom and on my babies highchair. It works really well and I liked the smell.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? It worked just as well as my usual products and I liked that it was a multipurpose spray so I could use it everywhere.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? Although I do like to buy "green products" where possible, my most important thing just now is that the product works well and is a good price.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? If it is around about the same price as my usual sprays then yes, I would buy it again as I like everything about it.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? Nothing.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? I would recommend the spray because I think it is just as good as any other product I've used however I didn't like the washing up liquid. I didn't feel like it was cleaning my dishes properly and it didn't have a nice, fresh smell like my usual one.

Coca · 08/05/2012 19:16

Washing powder.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
No opinion, hadn't seen them

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
Quite a strong smell at first but not once the clothes were dry.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
It appears to do the job as well as some other powders I buy.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'm fairly slobby when it comes to green credentials.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
I really like the one I buy from lidl, it makes the clothes smell lovely for ages.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
None, it works and will appeal to better people than me

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would if they were looking for a greener alternative

HammeringBird · 08/05/2012 19:37

Just got back from hols. Assume the parcel waiting for me at the post office is the washing powder so will collect it and crack on with the post-holiday washing tomorrow!

susiey · 08/05/2012 19:59

I'd never noticed them as i was happy with my current washing liquid

I liked the smell very fresh.product cleaned well.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

I usually use persil small and mighty non bio.and it cleaned just as well.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

to be honest its not something I really worry about!price is more of a concern to me.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

depends on how my machine fairs with powder rather than liquid and the comparative cost compared to persil when its on special offer.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

a measure ment for a 8 kg drum I had to guess how much to add

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

yes if they were the kind of person that cared about the environment but again would depend on the cost.

Washing Powder

Q1. Didnt have an opinion before using Naturally Powered products.

Q2. Surprised how good the washing powder was!

Q3. Probably better, especially on grubby white socks! Grin

Q4. I'd prefer to buy 'green' things, but ultimately I care about performance & cost, sorry! Blush

Q5. Yes, if the price is right.

Q6. None

Q7. Yes, if we were talking about washing products! Shock

GiraffeAHolic · 08/05/2012 21:03

Tested the Anti-Bac spray

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

Had not heard of them so no prior opinions

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

The spray seems effective enough, left kitchen tiles shiny and was good for the dining table
I have to say I found it really chemically, I found myself holding my breath while using it seemed to get into my throat and breathing in made me cough (maybe an asthmatic thing)

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

I normally use Waitrose kitchen cleaner and Dettol Anti-Bac, I'm unsure if this product is supposed to do the job of both? It seemed to be about the same effectiveness, although I seem to have used more than I would of my normal products

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

I tend to slightly steer towards 'green' products but there was little information about what actually made this product green?

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Honestly, I very rarely shop at Tesco. But I would like to try some of the other products in the range

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

My only criticism is the chemical smell

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would say that it worked well enough, but wouldn't specifically recommend it over others

Will report back when I've tackled the hob with it Hmm

NinjaChipmunk · 08/05/2012 21:10

I had the anti bac spray

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
I didn't really have one as was unaware of the product until it came up for testing.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
Smelt quite nice and citrusy, seems to clean pretty well so far so am happy with the product.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
About the same, but smelt nicer.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
It would affect my decision slightly as I prefer more natural a\nd less chemical however the decision is also money motivated. If it was competitively priced then yes I would buy it again.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
Possibly, see above - I need to check on the pricing.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
There is no mention on it of any surfaces you should avoid putting it on/ try a corner first. Is it really for cleaning absolutely everytrhing???

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think so although it didn't wow me enough to start a conversation about it!

Babysamrocks · 08/05/2012 21:14

i had never heard of them before!
Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
the spray was fantastic at cleaning surfaces including the floor! i thought it smelt nice and not too overpowering.
Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
i think it worked better than the tesco antibacterial cleaner that i usually use
Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
i do like to do my bit to be enviromentally friendly but have never really bought eco friendly products as the price usually puts me off.
Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
if it is the same price as my normal products i will definitly be buying it again!
Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
more to the packaging than the product. wghen squirting the product it often leaked from the trigger onto my fingers which was a bit of a pain!
Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
yes would recommend it as it has done the job better than my usual cleaner and also like the fact that it is eco friendly!

Halbanoo · 08/05/2012 22:29

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I knew nothing about them prior to the product test.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I absolutely love the antibacterial spray. The smell is so pleasant, crisp and fresh without screaming "I'm a cleaning product smell!" It is like a surface cleaner and an air freshener all-in-one. The washing-up liquid was less impressive. It did, too, have a very pleasant scent but I did not feel as if the product was as effective as others when it comes to washing my dishes.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

The spray is much better both in quality and scent compared to my usual cleaning products. The washing-up liquid did not make me feel like my dishes were truly clean.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

I try to use green products when I can, provided the quality of the products is good and the price is right.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

I will certainly buy the cleaning spray, but would pass on the washing-up liquid for now.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

The spray bottle could be a bit more robust. The spray trigger on my bottle has already cracked after a few uses.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would definitely recommend the spray, based on the pleasant scent alone!

DeepPurple · 08/05/2012 22:56

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

I hadn't heard of them.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I loved the smell of the washing powder and washing up liquid. The washing powder worked really well and left clothes smelling fresh and clean. I was disappointed in the washing up liquid as it didn't seem to foam and didn't feel like it removed grease effectively.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

The washing powder worked as good as my usual powder. I thought that the washing up liquid was worse.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

The green credentials are not at the top of my priority list. However, if they cost a similar price to other products of a similar quality then I would buy the green version.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

I will buy the washing powder again but not the washing up liquid. I would happily try the other products.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

The washing powder was in a plastic bag inside the cardboard box. I thought this was unnecessary. The espresso cup that came with it wasn't clearly marked with the 30g mark all the way around so the first time I assumed that I needed to use a full cup. The instructions on the box do say "a cup" and not "to the line"

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend them, especially the washing powder.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 08/05/2012 22:59
  1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?

A bit bland to be honest. Packaging very basic but plus points for being eco and recyclable.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?

I have two young children, one who thinks he's Alan Titchmarsh and is always grubbing around for worms and snails and the other who gets more food on her clothes then she does in her tummy. My partner does a lot of running so has plenty of sweaty clothes for me so all in all it has been quite a challenge for any washing powder! The Naturally Powered did as well as any of the powders I have used in the past and removed all the stains and smells from my laundry. It left them looking right and clean and smelling fresh. Not over-powering, just a subtle scent.

The washing liquid was great. Cut through grease no problem and the suds stayed until the end.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?

They worked just as well. I couldn't tell the difference. The smell was more subtle. Nice and fresh.

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?

It is important for me that the products I use are kind to the environment, and to my families skin so the green credentials of this product would determine whether I would buy it or not.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?

Yes I would but I do get bored quite easily so would like some more variety in the range to keep me interested.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?

The papar measuring cup was a bit wider than the box it came in (but that may be because the box was a sample size?) which made it a bit difficult to scoop the powder out so I would make the box wider or the scoop narrower. The box could also do with jazzing up, I found it a bit unappealing and bland.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would as I always try and get friends and family to use environmentally friendly products and this passes the test as it actually works and is green.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 08/05/2012 23:02

I forgot to add that the washing powder did leave a bit of undissolved gloop in my drawer too.

droitwichmummy · 09/05/2012 07:40

I tested the washing powder.
Q1 I shop online with Tesco and hadn 't noticed these products
Q2 Performance was good - the same as my usual brand with no white marks or clumps
Q3 See above
Q4 I prefer to buy green products but price is a factor too
Q5 I may buy this dependant on price
Q6 The instructions are a little confusing. The refer to using 1 cup (30ml) but the cup provided is actually twice this size. I only realised after a couple of uses when I happened to spot the 30ml line on the cup
Q7 Yes I would

Piggychunk · 09/05/2012 07:59

Q1. Box was very simple not very eye catching so I would probably walk past it in isle unless on offer with sign.

Q2. I felt the smell wasn't strong and have smelt a lot stronger. It worked as well as current powder but did leave residue in the drawer. My son has Eczema and it gace him a flare up

Q3. Worked same as regular powder but not as give as the Ariel ultra

Q4. I never really look for Green products

Q5. No due to my sons eczema and as I didn't like the fact it left a mess in my washing machine drawer and prefer products I can put straight in the drum

Q6. Make the product more eye catching. Make the product dissolve fully in drawer

Q7. No as I couldn?t use it on my son with eczema

sparklystar · 09/05/2012 08:03

I tested the Naturally Powered Antibacterial Spray.

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? No used them before, curious to see how they worked in comparison to my usual product.

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? The anti bac spray worked on everyday items but not so much on ingrained dirt, overall I was happy with the performance, I liked the smell fresh and clean.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? The product was similar to my usual spray just a different smell

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not? I feel this is important, I do try wherever possible to buy the eco friendly products but sometimes unfortunatly price / performance dictate otherwise.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? I feel I would purchase this product again, as I said earlier overall I was happy with the performance etc.

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? To the antibacterial Spray I would maybe look at the bottle as mine leaked (not sure if this is a problem for others not had chance to read the thread) and also the washing up liquid was ok when first used but soon lost the bubbles etc

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not? I would recommend to a friend as I feel we all need to do our bit for the environment and these products do the job

ProfCoxWouldGetIt · 09/05/2012 09:51

Tested non-bio washing powder

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
They looked nice and I liked the clean look of the packaging (not luminescent orange/yellow/green)

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
I was fairly underwhelmed by the washing up liquid, I felt that you?d need a lot of it to actually be able to clean your dishes.
The washing powder works well, although having used tablets for a good few years, I found the quantity required quite surprising

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
The washing up liquid don?t come close to fairy (but that said I?ve yet to find a washing up liquid that does)
The Washing Powder did a good job, and unlike some other powders I have used recently, it did not leave a soapy residue on the clothes

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would prefer to purchase Green products, but have struggled to find one that cleans as well as the more chemical products. I may consider using the washing powder long term, but is there a tablet variety?

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
If I can find a tablet variety of the washing up powder I will happily purchase it, but as I own the world?s smallest kitchen with no storage, the size and number of washes you get from a package is a big part in my decision making process

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
The washing up liquid needs to be stronger, even in very hot water, it didn?t remove oil from a pan, and I had to run a new sink full of water and re wash it.

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I?d recommend the washing powder happily as it does a good job, and I like the green credentials, but I would not recommend the washing up liquid as I felt it did not do a good job.

happyglamper · 09/05/2012 09:52

Anti Bac Spray
Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them?
No opinion - hadn't seen them in store or any advertising

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products?
overall I liked this product, the bottle was a bit flimsy - if you pick it up and squeeze it product leaks out of the lid - worked really well on my gas hob and work tops looked very shiny. Loved the smell, very fresh and clean and more natural than other citrus cleaners I've tried.

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use?
I live in a really hard water area, so have a range of descaling and anti bac products, this spray did seem to reduce the amount of watermarks. Much better than another kitchen cleaner that I use

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?
I like to use eco when I can but not at the expense of functionality, if this range works then great, if not then it can be as green as it likes but I won't use.

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not?
possibly. see below

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing?
produce it in wipes form. Much easier to allocate chores out if it involves a wipe than a spray in our house!

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'd recommend they give them a try

Saltire · 09/05/2012 10:31

I was testing the washing powder

Q1. What was your opinion of the Naturally Powered products before using them? - I wasn't really aware of them

Q2. After using the products, what was your over all opinion? Did the products work? Were you happy with the performance? Did you like the smell and feel of the products? - I was more than happy, it hasn't irritated my eldest sons skin, it got clothes clean, even got felt pen out. The smell was nice when it was in the box, but felt the clothes didn't really smell as nice when they came out the machine. Even got stains out on a cold wash!

Q3. How did the products compare to your usual cleaning products? Did it work just as well, better or worse than the products you usually use? - Better on the whole, certianly in terms of getting stains out

Q4. How important are the green credentials of the Naturally Powered range to you? Would this affect your decision to buy? If so, why? If not, why not?- I tend to buy household products based on price , my son's skin and performance. SO far this is ticking all the boxes

Q5. Will you continue to buy the Tesco Naturally Powered range? If so, why? If not why not? - I would buy it again, I liked it

Q6. What, if any, improvements would you make to the Naturally Powered products you were testing? Can't think of any

Q7. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the products to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend it, but I don't usually discuss cleaning things with ym friends!
