sorry snapespeare Blush

crunchbag · 14/02/2012 10:45

I have 9 sachets going spare if anyone is interested. Sorry Quaker Oats, but is seems a shame to waste them.

Bluebell99 · 14/02/2012 10:49

Where do we add feedback? This thread or somewhere else?

miaowmix · 14/02/2012 11:28

Oh dear, that didn't go well. DD didn't like it at all, said it wasn't chocolate-y, and has now declared she has gone off porridge!

As for me I hated porridge to begin with and this has put me off further... it looks very much like baby food, texture far too gloopy, and taste quite horribly sweet.
Reminded me of chocolate blancmange , that really fake chocolatey taste.

DP refused to even try it, he's also not a porridge fan.

I'm afraid I have given my remaining sachets to a friend with a 5 year old son and asked for his comments and feedback, which I will report later.

On the plus side, I LOVE the packaging Grin. It looks as though it should taste more healthy, oaty and wholesome somehow. But it doesn't. Sorry!

chocolateyclur · 14/02/2012 12:41

No feedback thread yet?

Correctmeifiamwrong · 14/02/2012 13:42

No bloody porridge yet...

TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 14/02/2012 13:49

Bluebell and chocolatey - the feedback thread isn't quite ready yet so please add any comments you have here in the meantime and I'll let you know when the other thread is up.

I now have porridge but no children Hmm so tasting will have to wait until Sunday.

I like the packaging (I'm a sucker for a cute bear) but would like to know what the "natural flavourings" are if they aren't chocolate (as implied by "chocolate flavour ")

rosie17 · 14/02/2012 14:32

My two liked the packaging too. My eldest is still giving it 1o out of 10 but says it's a bit powdery but your youngest says 'no, no, no it's way too sweet and tastes like yuk'

JambalayaCodfishPie · 14/02/2012 14:51

We have ours now. Will be trying tomorrow. DD, 7, wants to know if she can do the feedback herself -she says it's important you get it right. Grin

strandednomore · 14/02/2012 14:59

Hi
dd1 (6) quite liked it but didn't want it the 2nd day. Hers was a little too watery as we added too much cold milk to try and cool it down enough for her to eat (always a problem with porridge). Dd2 (4) thought it looked like poo but ate it all and claimed she liked it. DH thought it tasted like "cheap chocolate".

ohyouBadBadkitten · 14/02/2012 15:13

will the comments be transferred over OtherHelen? - how long will the feedback be open? tis a bit tricky for some with it being half term.

We liked the box - nice and efficient packaging and cute design.

The first time I made it, I realised the amount of milk you put in depends on how you hold the packet. I filled it to the line allowing the packet to open up as I did (but the packet then folded a bit and some fell out) so I had to put more in.

On the positive side of making it, it didnt try and climb out of the bowl in the microwave - stayed where it ought to. But unfortunately it was too milky by quite a long way, so I added in a bit of ready brek.

dd didnt like the taste - the sweetness was right, but not at all chocolatey.

So the second time I made it I added in a teaspoon of cocoa powder and used less milk. Then it was ok, but kind of defeats the purpose.

Calories wise it contains around 200ish. dd is 12 and that isnt enough for a breakfast to keep her going (I think she should have between 400-500). But with a glass of juice and a yogurt it just about squeaks in. I think the packs need to be bigger.

whoknowsme · 14/02/2012 15:54

I didn't seemt to get an e-mail but found the parcel and card addressed to mumsnetters on the doorstep last week.

Ds1 was our first tester and he loves his grub. He said he liked it but that it didn't taste chocolatey. He has since declined to have another one for breakfast and gone back to the golden syrup flavour.

I then tried it and have to agree with him. I'd say it tasted well.....marshmallowy really. It wasn't unpleasant but was sweet in a way that masked the underlying oaty taste wich is part of the point of eating porridge. The golden syrup flavour, whilst sweet, doesn't seem to do this.

Haven't persuaded ds2 to try it yet which is a shame as I think he would enjoy the taste. Never say die though, the delay in the arrival of a real feedback thread may give me chance to persuade him to give it a go.

lynniep · 14/02/2012 16:02

not good :(
DS1 (4) was really excited when he got the package. Couldnt wait to try it.
He took one mouthful and said 'yuk mummy - whats wrong with it?'. He did eat it, but pulled faces the whole time and left some.
The little one (2) just spat it out immediately (and theres nothing I love more than cleaning up blobs of porridge). And he normally eats my porridge as well as his own. I'm returning to fruity flavours as they like those.

iwantavuvezela · 14/02/2012 16:08

Not sure where the feedback thread is ....

My daughter has had it three days in a row ... and she has asked for it!

I was glad to learn on here that you can use the packet to measure the milk -i had no idea.

I absolutely love the packaging ... and it feels more in line with the health foods type cereal I buy. I think I will buy the honey one and try that as well.

It is really quick and easy to make .... it does seem dry after awhile, but then I am not a porridge person, and my daughter has enjoyed it, so i would have a box of these in the cupboard.

We went away for the weekend, and i took a sachet with me which was also very convenient as I had an easy breakfast with us without having to pack some giant box of rice crispies.

I would say for us its being a thumbs up!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 14/02/2012 16:09

Finally got to the post office this morning to pick it up so we shall try it tomorrow. Smile

PurpleKittyKnitting · 14/02/2012 17:03

I am another one still not received it :(

aristocat · 14/02/2012 17:07

no porridge here either Sad

VivaLeBeaver · 14/02/2012 17:25

OK, I'm being thick about Oat So Simple in general. The marked line on the pack that the milk goes up to - do you leave the oats in and then put milk in to the line, or empty the oats out and fill to the line with milk?

Anyway I put the oats in a bowl with what seemed like the right amount of milk. Blasted it for a minute, added a bit more milk and then another minute. Looked OK.

dd dIDIN'T LIKE IT, HAD ONE SPOONFUL AND NO MORE. Said it didn't taste of chocolate but was "yuck". I tried some and wasn't keen, just a bit of a nasty taste really, like cheap, really cheap foreign chocolate. Have gone back to the cinnamon flavour one.

chocolateyclur · 14/02/2012 18:44

Packaging - loved it, as did DS1 (3yo). It's easily recognisable on the shelves, which makes it easy for him to natter for it.

First impressions - it looks like porridge oats with some cocoa powder dusting. I'm not sure what I expected, but my first thought was that I could make it myself more cheaply than the RRP in shops. It smelt nice though.

The idea of pouring milk into the packet is a good idea and gives one less item to wash in the morning - but with a 6 pint milk bottle it was a recipe for disaster. Used the jug instead.

When it came out of the microwave it did not look appealing. I was expecting a rich, chocolatey colour, and nice thick porridge. Instead I got lumpy creamy brown stuff in thick milky liquid. It looked better after it had stood for a while, but then it got the dreaded PORRIDGE SKIN. Used less milk the next time and was happier.

Given the texture, I was amazed that DS1 was still enthusing about eating it. Must have been the magical "chocolate" word. He's usually a bit funny about textures - even from the look of them, but he was still hovering and wanting to try.

From the first try, he loved it. He said it "wasn't really chocolatey", but still noshed it down happily. Note: we had it for supper the first time. It was SO hot that, had it been for breakfast, we would have been horrendously late for preschool when it had cooled to a child-friendly temperature. I plan to make his half and half next time.

One of my reasons for wanting to try was that I'm breastfeeding, and feel that I should be eating porridge for my supply. Ready Brek doesn't "feel" like it does the job properly, but this looked like traditional porridge, and so psychologically it feels like it'd work.

My thoughts, however, were not as positive about taste. It was way too artificially sweet, and really did not taste of chocolate. It wasn't inedible, but I don't think I could stomach it for breakfast.

Overall, I wouldn't say it was the biggest hit. If DS1 nags for more, I will make my own, as aforementioned. It has, however, made me want to change back from Ready Brek to porridge oats in the morning (but with golden syrup). As Quaker Oats are what I think of when I'm imagining porridge (not that regularly...) I will probably buy Quaker plain oats in the next shop, so it's achieved something for them.

Thanks MN and Quaker. Looking forward to the official feedback thread!

TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 14/02/2012 18:53

Feedback thread is now live here. I'll email you all the link to it as well. Everyone who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win £250 Amazon vouchers.

Thanks for all the comments so far - we'll make sure we share this with Quaker as well as the feedback thread. If it's not too much trouble, please visit the feedback thread and answer the questions there too - you'll be entered into the prize draw if you do!

For those who haven't received their porridge yet, thank you for your patience - with any luck it should be with you by Friday at the latest (hopefully sooner).

We've got loads of testers on this one and realise it's half-term so the feedback thread will be open for a couple of weeks.

Thanks! H
