I didn't receive an email, but surprise this morning the postman had a parcel for us!

Thanks mumsnet! Grin

smackapacca · 11/02/2012 10:14

We have ours now. Thank-you.

aftereight · 11/02/2012 10:22

Our porridge arrived and the DCs even went to bed early with no fuss so that morning would arrive sooner! Choc porridge seemingly a big hit. Now, on day 2, one asked for Cheerios, and the other is still in bed at gone 10am..

BehindLockNumberNine · 11/02/2012 10:27

Taste test in progress in the Behind household...

Smells nice, cooked easily (we don't have a microwave).

Dd (ge 9) "Mmm, yum, I like it"
Ds (age 12) "Mm, yes, very nice"

And now it is lovely and quiet whilst they eat it all Grin

I tasted a bit too. And whilst I am a huge chocolate fan, this is not for me. But then it is aimed at children so definately not aimed at me anyway...)
It is nice, sweet, warm, but a little bit sickly for my liking.

Ooh, dd jus spoke again: "Mmmm, I love this"
Ds said "Good starter, what is our main breakfast" I think that means one sachet is not enough for him...

Thank you for letting us try this - very nice!!

sasslejaney84 · 11/02/2012 10:29

Received mine yesterday! DD (aged7) tried it this morning! In her words "was beyond scrummy!) Thank you very much for allowing us to try this! A massive hit in my house!!

MissBerta · 11/02/2012 10:36

Ds2 loved this! DH had two sachets and declared it delicious, but they are oatsosimple experts at the moment!! As I've said before, in our cereal cupboard are five different flavours, White choc and raspberry is going down really well.

It's very quick and easy to prepare, on a morning when the frost is two inches thick on the trees (never seen it like that before!) it was a very welcome breakfast.

FannyFifer · 11/02/2012 10:39

Got our pack yesterday afternoon, thank you. Grin
DS tried it this morning, he ate it but said it didn't taste like chocolate, looked quite like rice pudding. He enjoyed it as he ate it all.

HattiFattner · 11/02/2012 10:46

ours arrived yesterday - chocolate - and I made some this morning for the hungry one for when he came home from swimming. As its -10C here, I though a steaming hot bowl of oats was just what the doctor ordered.

Sadly, disappointed. The chocolate flavour is just not there - it smelled and tasted like playdoh or "marshmallows" says DS. There was no chocolate hit, and it was not really sweet enough for my tribe - they tried it with a little sugar and no improvement. I think there were expecting more intensity of chocolate and a rich brown colour.

I tried it and have to agree WITH DS1 that it tasted like porridge made with weak drinking chocolate. 'tis neither one thing or another.

Tortoise · 11/02/2012 10:46

DDs tried it this morning.
DD1 said its okay but doesn't taste like chocolate. Then once eaten she said it wasn't that nice!
DD2 said it was nice.
Not a huge hit so far.

TheCunningStunt · 11/02/2012 12:36

I got mine just now! Didnt even know I was selected so Thankyou! DCs ate it right away and asked for more, so far so good!

rosie17 · 11/02/2012 14:50

Our 9 year old loved it awarded it 10 out of 10. While I wasn't looking he had put half a ton of honey on it so this may have been a factor. Our 5 year said she just didn't like it.
Our 9 year old's only negative observation was that the porridge was 'too powdery'.

MegBusset · 11/02/2012 15:18

Mine arrived this morning. Pretty stoked for breakfast tomorrow :)

Grockle · 11/02/2012 15:56

Ours arrived today, DS is looking forward to trying to tomorrow. I'm not sure about the ingredients - 85% oats, sugar, natural flavouring - that means 15% of it is sugar/ flavouring which seems like a lot to me.

Usually I make chocolate porridge out of oats and a square or 2 of chocolate - will see how this compares.

JambalayaCodfishPie · 11/02/2012 15:58

There were a million people waiting in the sorting office when I went to collect ours, decided it could wait until Monday! Grin

GossipMonger · 11/02/2012 15:58

ooh got ours too

c0rnsilllkrunninglikealaydee · 11/02/2012 15:59

still don't have ours

HavePatience · 11/02/2012 16:21

We got ours and now DS wants his for supper. We've had evening porridge before but not with an added dose of sugar.

worriedsilly · 11/02/2012 16:34

Got ours, Thank you.

DD1 (7) wasn't mad keen. Although to be honest she wasn't really keen in any breakfast this morning, so we will try again.

DD2 (3) wouldn't even try it.

I had it and didn't like it. Sorry. It tastes of synthetic something or other, vanilla and maybe a bit powdery.

I'd like to say that as far as the marketing goes, I wouldn't buy this. Th eingredients don't tell me enough. Like what is 'natural flavouring'? I'd like to know what what is actually in it, so I can estimate if it should be a staple breakfast or a treat breakfast.

My dd love porridge and will eat it plain or with a little golden syrup - so I am not motivated to add a whole load of sugar or 'natural flavouring' without being sure it is worth it.

So to that end, I could just put some cocoa in the milk and know what is in the breakfast.

Also - the sachet sizes. I had one sachet and it wasn't enough. Are they aimed at children?

Oh by the way - my kids eat chocolate and sweets and processed food. Of course they do - but I can't control what goes in a bar of dairy milk so I accept that and know a little now and again won't hurt.
Howvere porrisge is completely 'known' and so I don't want to turn it into a processed additive based meal unless I have to. Hope that makes sense.

reallymissingsleep · 11/02/2012 19:54

Neither of mine liked it, but they have not been keen on porridge before I was just hopeful the chocolate would swing it, sadly it did not. But hubbie thought it was tasty and plans to finish all the sachets. Am sure that children who normally eat porridge might like it. I think their Blueberry one sounds nice.

TheSkiingGardener · 11/02/2012 20:00

Got mine today. We'll try it tomorrow.

But what are 'natural ingredients'? How have you made it chocolatey because the fact that you haven't put 'cocoa' makes me think it's full of rubbish?

notcitrus · 11/02/2012 20:02

Ate some with DH, SIL, and ds and dn (both 3) this afternoon, when they wanted something hot and a treat.

They were all unimpressed, which given that it involved chocolate, milk, and porridge seemed quite a feat. They microwaved it and it didn't look very chocolatey compared to say chocolate shreddies. The oats were so powdery it was a bit slimy (ds most unimpressed) - maybe less cooking time would have worked, as I use normal porridge oats and 2 min in the 600W microwave.

Both ds and dn thought it wasn't properly chocolate and ds nearly had a big strop over being diddled out of a chocolate treat!

DH and SIL felt much the same, plus it was very sweet, so left me to finish the bowl.

My opinion - hugely oversweet, almost no taste of chocolate, and too finely ground, like ReadyBrek, but that last is a matter of personal taste. Then I looked at the ingredients.

84% oats means 16% sugar!!!

I'd love to disbelieve the 'only half the sugar of other choc cereals' but not having ever bought any this may well be true - but if others are indeed >30% sugar at least they tend to taste better! Will have to look at chocolate own-brand shreddies to see what's in them, as they don't taste nearly as sweet (not that I buy them; the ILs bring them...)
And 'natural flavourings' - does this mean carob and other things that aren't actual chocolate? Given it says 'chocolate flavour' not 'flavoured' in the OP, that means there may be no chocolate involved - which shows!

I'll add the rest to my own porridge oats over the next few days, but would never buy these. Even for travelling I could take a plastic tub, oats, and cartons of UHT milk and some drinking chocolate for well under half the price!

Disappointing. How about apple and cinnamon for a child-friendly flavour instead?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2012 20:02

Thanks for this. Dp and dd1 tried it this morning. They both thought it was okay but dd1 said it wasn't chocolately enough and dp said that he needed two packets to not still be really hungry (he IS greedy though!).

TheLittleFriend · 11/02/2012 20:07

Tried ours this morning. dd said she liked it for a couple of mouthfuls, but then changed her mind. She has never been willing to try porridge before though, so it's progress. I finished the bowl & thought it was very nice!

MeDented · 11/02/2012 20:14

Ds tried it this morning and gives it 10 out of 10, he likes it the same amount as the new golden syrup weetabix he loves so a hit here so far.

beachhutbetty · 11/02/2012 21:07

Ours came this morning, after breakfast, so will take the first test in the morning!
