We tried it this morning - DS1 and DS2 are big porridge fans so were v excited at the idea of chocolate porridge. They liked the box - appealed to all of us - and thought the measuring milk out in the package was cool. However, they didnt like the look of the porridge after the 2 minutes (was much runnier than they normally have it) - when it came to tasting DS1 - aged 5 - had one spoon and said he didnt like it and asked for normal porridge (I think it was an issue with the texture rather than the taste). DS2 - aged 3 - ate half a bowl of it and said it was yummy but not chocolatey at all. DH refused to go near it.

californiaburrito · 12/02/2012 21:00

Tried it on Saturday morning with DD (3). She's going through one of these stages were she'll only eat chips so I wasn't hoping for much. Dutifully she had one spoonful and declared it to be "too yucky". However, I did notice that she swallowed the spoonful rather than spitting it out and as such I am counting that as a small victory for chocolate porridge.

I thought the flavor wasn't bad- I'd never even imagined chocolate porridge before- but I felt that the chocolate went well with the nuttiness of the oats. The texture, however, was not so good. I'm sure I've had Oats So Simple before and it was less gluey.

It didn't go well

ds1, loves golden syrup porridge. He had to be pressed into trying it because it 'looked weird' and 'smells funny'. He didn't like the taste because it 'tastes of powder' Confused . He is a big porridge fan and has it every morning and also has it in a flask on the way home from training 3x a week. He only had a spoonful of this.

dd is a porridge refuser but was blackmailed into trying it she didn't like it because its gloopy and tastes of nothing. I wasn't really expecting her to be enthusiastic.

ds2 has severe speech delay. One of his few words is porridge. I couldn't persuade him to put it into his mouth and had to placate him with golden syrup porridge as he sobbed.

DH, eats everything, apart from chocolate porridge apparently. I had to show him the box to prove it was chocolate flavoured, he thought the colour was really bad and the taste was 'rubbish'.

I ate it, but mainly because it was in front of me and I was hungry. I wouldn't have it again. I thought it tasted v slightly of vanilla but not much else. As an aside, the cinnamon one doesn't have nearly enough cinnamon in and it probably wouldn't hurt honey and almond to have a bit more almond.

We all liked the box.

Oh dear. I so wanted to like the chocolate porridge. I avoid sugary cereals and have never offered them anything with chocolate at breakfast but given the comparatively lower sugar content I might have been persuaded to buy this.

I like the packaging. I would say there does not seem quite enough in each sachet. I am always somewhat suspicious of vague descriptors so "natural flavouring" rings alarm bells. I don't assume that natural always mean safe and healthy which is no doubt the intended purpose.

The smell upon opening the sachet strongly suggested I wasn't going to like this product. To me it had a weird synthetic cherry smell.
I am not sure what I expected, perhaps chocolate rolled oats, but was surprised to see it was merely oats and a few spoonfuls of some pale powder. I wonder why I would bother to pay a premium for this when I could simply add some high quality cocoa powder to plain porridge.

I prepared the porridge as the instructions suggested although I used a little more milk. It was given to DD1 (4yrs 10mths) and DD2 (2yrs 10mths). DD2 sniffed it, nibbled a little, and asked for Weetabix instead. DD1 was far more enthusiastic and declared it "delicious". She began to eat with gusto which surprises me not given that this child would eat a sewer rat if it were dipped in chocolate. However, despite always finishing her breakfast, she gave up half way through (which wasn't much considering the portion size) and asked for toast.

I then tried it myself and it was pretty bad. It's admirable that they have tried to keep the sugar content low but the result is a product that just doesn't taste very nice. I am disappointed to say that in it's present form I will not be buying this porridge.

But many thanks to Quaker and Mumsnet for the trial opportunity.

Oh, I have just gone back through this thread, have I posted in the wrong place? Is this not the actual feedback thread?

shaka12003 · 13/02/2012 10:09

Post has been and ours still hasn't arrived Sad

thrifty · 13/02/2012 10:12

Ours came last week, was left on doorstep as too big to go through the letterbox. Maybe your neighbours have snaffled it. BTW where is feedback for it.

lubeybooby · 13/02/2012 10:13

No the feedback isn't due yet but I just wrote down first impressions to refer back to when it is feedback time.

thrifty · 13/02/2012 10:25

Well I tried it on Sat too. Ds declared that he hates porridge and that chocolate and porridge should never be together, so we didn't start well.
The packaging was fine, and as i opened the pack I had a sniff, Nd thought that it didn't bode well as it smelt of that watery vending machine chocolate, you know the fake stuff.
I liked the way you measure the milk in the pack, however after 2 mins in an 800w microwave I had a bowl of lumpy sludge, I gave it another minute, stirred it well, then let it sit for 5 mins to cool down then it looked quite good, I had a little taste and it was pretty tasteless. I managed to blackmail ds into tasting it, but that was as far as we got, he didn't even swallow it. So i ate it cos it would have been a waste to throw it away. Texture wise it was fine and porridgy, but the flavour was awful, and did in fact tasted as it smelled. Sorry, I so wanted ds to like it as we are really running out of breakfast ideas. I might offer it to the neighbours and see what their reaction is.

shaka12003 · 13/02/2012 10:29

thrifty its ok my dp is a postie so brings our mail home thats how i know it hasnt arrived yet. Smile

cornykabana · 13/02/2012 10:40

ours arrived this morning.
I liked the packaging and ds2 was attracted to it also - he liked the look of the fudge porridge on the flyer
I eat porridge anyway and I think it tastes okay. A bit bland maybe and not particularly chocolatey.
It was the appearance that really put ds2 off - it doesn't look very appetising really as the colour is a bit weak. He refused to try it.
I think that there is enough in the packet as porridge is so filling. I also cheated and made it in a pan so that I could add the milk gradually according to taste.
Personally I think that porridge is nicer with a bit of texture. When I was younger I would sprinkle sugar on the top of plain porridge which made it a bit crunchy in a' creme brulee' kind of way. Now I usually mix porridge with a chopped banana. I think porridge with chocolate stirred in may be nicer although I've never tried that.

Correctmeifiamwrong · 13/02/2012 10:47

Still no porridge.... Is it coming by Royal Mail or courier?

TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 13/02/2012 11:15

The feedback thread is coming soon but please add your feedback here in the meantime if you want to. I'll post again when the feedback thread is live and will email you all too.

Thanks!

mine came by courier but all my parcels have been late over the last week.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 13/02/2012 12:19

I assume mine came by RM as I was out so it was left at tge po for me to collect.

vogonmothership · 13/02/2012 12:32

I made it for DS(6) but it was a lot thinner than the other versions we have tried, slurpy like soup. I too was slightly perturbed by the 'natural flavourings', why not just say what ingredients are?
Anyway, Ds who likes chocolate and porridge only had a few mouthfuls, he just didn't like it. Chocolate fiend DD(3) couldn't even be persuaded to get a spoon near her mouth.
I have to say it tasted of 'nowt nor summat', bit meh. We love the golden syrup one but this didn't taste of anything in particular and I really couldn't understand why the texture was so different.
Sorry! We will give the Blueberry one a try though.

GrownUp2012 · 13/02/2012 12:38

The kids ate it, so it isn't inedible, however I don't think they thought it was amazing, the chocolate flavour is a bit bland and boring for them. We're going to try it mixed with banana tomorrow, they've tried it with honey added today, which they preferred to on it's own. I think we prefer the other flavours to be honest, golden syrup and cinnamon are both favourite at home.

We love the packaging, it's really cute. Definitely a plus point for the kids. Like the portion control, but a bit worried about the ingredients list which is a bit vague.

SoupDragon · 13/02/2012 12:39

No porridge :(

newlark · 13/02/2012 16:32

Ours arrived on Saturday (after breakfast) so we took it away with us for the weekend. I made a sachet for the children to share on Sunday momrning (with skimmed milk which is all we had available).

Dd (5) who normally has porridge with honey every morning declared that it tasted like custard (which she doesn't like) and asked for toast instead. Ds (3) said "that's delicious" and ate the whole lot (he does have a sweet tooth and is a custard fan though).

I had a bowl too - the portion size was too small and and it was too runny for me. I would want two sachets to keep me going until lunchtime and I also prefer my porridge made with less milk and cooked for a shorter time so that it is thicker with the oats still being a bit chewy. I found the taste perfectly pleasant though - a bit on the sweet side for me as I normally have unsweetened porridge with a few raisins in - but I was quite happy to eat it. I made it to my normal consistency with about 100 ml of milk cooked for 1 min on the second morning and preferred that. Ds ate a whole portion again (this time with semi-skimmed milk) and was clearly happy doing so.

I found the sachets a bit fiddly for measuring milk - I make porridge using the microwave every morning so am used to measuring by eye and prefer to do that. I think I would only buy it as a treat or if going away for a few days - I will probably try the other flavours for dd for a change. Thank you for letting us try it!

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/02/2012 17:21

still not got ours yet and I have found out we do seem to have an issue with packages, not giving us the cards to let us know it needs collecting

I went in today and nothing there for me to collect

tethersend · 13/02/2012 17:28

I did it as per instructions for 2 mins in the microwave and it exploded everywhere.

It could have tasted like manna from heaven, but after having to clean it up, all I could taste was bitterness. It was like napalm.

DazR · 13/02/2012 17:37

BIG confession here - my DH accidentally set fire to the porridge box Shock which I had carelessly left on the ceramic cooker top . He was trying to cook dinner (as I had had an operation the day before) and turned the wrong hotplate on..... So - no porridge for us but luckily caught early enough when we spotted smoke drifting into the lounge...... Blush

iseenodust · 13/02/2012 17:40

Still awaiting porridge delivery Envy

4madboys · 13/02/2012 17:56
