NOW CLOSED Samsung fridge freezer feedback thread

NewGirlHelenMumsnet · 02/08/2011 09:46

This thread is for the MNers who have been testing a new Samsung G-series American-style fridge freezer.

This is the first stage of feedback, asking you for your initial impressions of the fridge freezer. The second stage of feedback will happen in a couple of months when you've had a while to get to know your new fridge freezer!

Below are some questions to get you started. Please feel free to add your own comments as well.

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?
  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?
  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?
  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?
  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?
  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?
  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

Thanks very much for taking part,
MNHQ

It is a Brita kettle MBJ - has a maxtra filter in and I got it a couple of years ago as I was fed up of scummy tea.

BUT after bragging about my bargain filters, just got a cancellation from Amazon and now the price has gone up to £30 Shock, apparently it was a mistake! Hmmph! Where's the not amused smiley?

pengymum · 12/08/2011 09:35

MBJ - if you don't need a new kettle, just get a Brita jug - can usually get a cheap offers for these, and use the water in your kettle - same thing in the end. Just have to remember to only use filtered water in the kettle though. I still descale kettle (but nothing like as frequently as before) but that is because I like the inside to be nice and shiny!

Macaroona · 12/08/2011 10:47

Frozen - I've been using the water from the fridge to fill the kettle Smile I must buy a new kettle as ours is already all limescaley.

Another positive for Samsung - non-scummy tea henceforth!

pengymum · 12/08/2011 13:24

Macaroona - isn't it a bit expensive to use cooled water to make tea? First you pay to cool the water then you pay to heat it up again! Confused

WhipMeIndiana · 12/08/2011 16:33

also Id have to wait about 6hrs for that tiny little water spurt to fill my mahoosive kettle

WhipMeIndiana · 12/08/2011 16:34

oddly, one of my dh's only willingly done chores is descaling the kettle. he loves doing it. even when he didnt tell me he'd done it and we all drank cups of tea of descaler water....tasted the same.

pengymum · 12/08/2011 16:39

eurgh! descaler water tea!
Modom is not a tea connoisseur? (said in very snooty tones)
(neither am I - Assam or PG is my tipple, can't stand perfumey tea! Earl Grey - boak)
Brew

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?
I love it. The contents of my previous fridge have just vanished inside. DH feels it is a bit deep - its normal applicance depth plus doors. But he likes to watch TV while washing up and it is impeding his view. It absolutely dwarves the bin, a similar shape which is quite amusing. Bin sits beside like a tiny puppy.
  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?
I already had a ss fridge so used to it. I like the bobbly plastic side bit, no need to worry about finger prints on it. The handles don't look smeary either.
  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?
I could almost fit my whole family in it! I really like the way the door compartments are deeper than just one bottle / jar, makes it so much more versatile and easy to fit in things of different sizes. It is difficult to replace the left hand veg drawer, there isn't much clearance and I will try very hard not to remove it again - I had to when removing packaging. The pizza thingy is not good for pizzas, too small, but I will get plenty of use for bread storage in it - I make all our bread.
  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?
I can't find anything worse. The old one kept dripping water which froze and spoiled the veg. The ff before last had a nice little lidded box which I kept raw meat in but I've still got it so no probs. Agree with everyone else, the manual is well shit in comparison with the marvellous appliance.
  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?
This is so easy to use. DS who is 6 worked it out straight away.
  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?
Yes we are using it loads, our water pressure is rather poor though and that is making it dead slow to get the water out. We like the ice, crushed especially. Son is drinking squash instead of fizzy drinks or pre-mixed so we should save lots of money there.
  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?
It isn't going to stay in its current location. My kitchen is rather long and the old fridge was right down one end, I'd hoped to get new Samsung to make the triangle of sink / cooker / fridge but it is cutting the room in half. Will move it all tomorrow. We had to fit a splitter to the dishwasher water supply ourselves, but the fitters did everything else.

Thank you so much Samsung and Mumsnet, I can't wait to really start getting to know how it works and reporting back.

WhipMeIndiana · 12/08/2011 22:48

pengymum -- after drinking we realsied error, and box said do not drink, but didnt have a skull& crossbones logo, so we thought we'd survive...

I like my tea very strong. HATE the perfumed shite too, and any de-caff nonsense.

WhipMeIndiana · 12/08/2011 22:50

caught ds(3) opening the freezer door and shutting again repeatedly to watch the pretty lights Hmm

wish it had a freezer door lock.
it's just his height!

TheFrozenMBJ · 13/08/2011 06:19

Oh you philistines! I love a cup of Earl Grey, in fact am having a nice one right now Wink

DS isn't strong enough (19 months) to open the freezer door yet but it was my first though as he is runs up to it and holds on to the handle while leaning back, it is just a matter of time. A simple clip, type lock on the handle would sort it, I think. One that an adult can unclip with the thumb, IYKWIM?

WhipMeIndiana · 14/08/2011 22:08

dh mis-shut a door tonight, cue fridge alarm
dh - mumbles 'those doors are tough to shut.'

WhipMeIndiana · 14/08/2011 22:08

they need a bit more weight to 'swing' shut a bit more easily

fishie · 15/08/2011 09:39

DS has spent the weekend making everyone drinks with ice in. It does go on the floor a bit but fortunately we have an ice-loving dog.

When is the next feedback due? I am considering buying a somewhat advanced book on breadmaking and Amazon reviews says only for people with really enormous fridges and freezers.

swampster · 15/08/2011 10:26

DS3's fridge magnets are scratching my fridge. Just made fruits of the forest ice cream with DS!

pengymum · 15/08/2011 11:36

fishie - why does the breadmaking book need to be kept in fridge? Does it come with ingredients? Confused
Ahh its yeast - recalls yeast should be kept in fridge or freezer!

(Feels very smug to have worked it out Grin)

NewGirlHelenMumsnet · 15/08/2011 14:00

DH has suggested the addition of an integrated soda-stream type of cartridge so we could have sparkling water on tap too.

WhipMeIndiana · 15/08/2011 16:53

wowowow sparkling water on tap. fizzy.

WhipMeIndiana · 15/08/2011 16:54

respect to the advanced breadmaker on the thread
Grin

I can make wicked muffins.

TheRealMBJ · 15/08/2011 17:29

MummyBerryJuice - a previous incarnation. I name changed to get away from the 'Mummy' but have absolutely no imaginationGrin

DurhamDurham · 15/08/2011 19:37

I would love sparkling water on tap!!

That's something for Samsung to think about Grin

nenevomito · 15/08/2011 20:28

Another vote here, by the way for an easier to mop up drip tray. DS is very enthusiastic about drinking cold water, but sadly very messy.

pengymum · 20/08/2011 20:32

Hi is anyone else's freezer frosting up? I thought it was the kids not closing the drawer but have been inspecting it at regular intervals to check and that is not the case but still frosting up??! Can't see any gaps in seal that would account for it. Any ideas what could be going wrong?
TIA

WhipMeIndiana · 26/08/2011 20:38

yes, mine is suddenly a lot frostier am shaking it off the ice lolly packets
