NewGirlHelenMumsnet · 02/08/2011 09:46

This thread is for the MNers who have been testing a new Samsung G-series American-style fridge freezer.

This is the first stage of feedback, asking you for your initial impressions of the fridge freezer. The second stage of feedback will happen in a couple of months when you've had a while to get to know your new fridge freezer!

Below are some questions to get you started. Please feel free to add your own comments as well.

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?
  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?
  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?
  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?
  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?
  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?
  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

Thanks very much for taking part,
MNHQ

another thing I noticed today ; being a cheapskate recycler, I sometimes refill those fruitshoot juice bottles with squash and it was quite a challenge to refill such a bottle with a backwards slanting water tap.

think it would be easier to aim and do if flow was vertical

  1. God God, it's huge! And it is, but it's fantastic. DH was very impressed when it arrived, he'd been checking out the spec on the Samsung website, but it's very different to actually see it in real life. D1 said, "I'm not allowed to put magnets on it, am I Mummy?" Wink

I loved the look of it and the fact that it fitted so perfectly into the space that the previous owner's of our house had left. They took their American fridge freezer with them and we'd had a bookcase in the space since moving in. Having the new fridge in there has really brought the kitchen together.

I didn't like the fact that I had to wait three hours before I could switch it on and start playing with it!

  1. Love the stainless steel finish. It matches my oven and looks very modern. I've previously only had white gloss fridges, but much prefer the look of steel. Shame that the sides are grey-plastic textured. You can see part of it as it juts out of the space it's in, not that great looking.
  1. Storage space is great, a weekly shop takes up hardly any room. I love the shelf that flips up so that you can stand bottles upright. I also like the separate drawers, especially with the humidity controls.

The freezer is also fabulous, I love the way that the drawers pull out (and light up! Disco!). I now have a separate space for my cornettos Grin

The only thing that is really missing is a wine rack. That would have made it perfect Wink.

  1. I felt very sad consigning our old fridge freezer to the garage. The only thing that it did better was have a cheese drawer that slotted under one of the shelves. But with the number of compartments in my beautiful new fridge, it's not a real problem.
  1. The LED panel is very intuitive so easy to use. It's like something from the Starship Enterprise (not that I've been beaming myself up or anything Blush)
  1. The water dispenser is great, although you have to use a large glass or jug to avoid splashing the fridge - which sends me rushing for my e-cloth to buff the steel! Buff it! Same with the ice, which can get a little messy. Has been a Godsend in the hot weather, and we're all drinking more water, which can only be a good thing. We're all enjoying playing with it Smile
  1. It's in the kitchen and has really finished the room off. It was already there, ready and waiting - inlcuding the water supply which the delivery drivers were amazed to see Grin - and it looks great.

Other comments - we're holding a first birthday party for D2 this weekend, so it will be insteresting to see how the fridge copes with it. Will report back!

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?

It felt huge to start with but it fills the space nicely. My previous fridge was normal width but unusually tall. The proportions of this one are far nicer. The use of space inside is amazing. It is very shiny.

I dislike the grey sides, I think the water/ice-dispenser is very flimsy. And I really hate the handles, I think they are incredibly ugly and they would have been a deal-breaker for me if I was considering buying this fridge. The peel-off plastic was annoying to get off and there is some still stuck in the joins that I cannot get out. DH likes it but agrees about the handles.

The DCs love the ice and water dispenser. I think it will mean they drink more water (rather than juice) than they used to. DS1 who is seven enjoys being able to help himself to drinks. DS2 who is five and fascinated by how things work thinks it is the best thing ever and wants to know where the water comes from and how the ice gets in it. He loves the lights and says: "This is the best fridge we've ever had!". DS3 who is two loves the lights and playing with crushed ice.

  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?

I would much prefer another finish. I used to have a I used to have a retro red Bosch fridge before I had three kids and it was utterly beautiful. Not great for a large family though which this Samsung is. I think the stainless steel finish takes itself a bit too seriously, lacks humour and gets damaged too easily. I would love to see this fridge in a pale mossy green or eggshell blue.

  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?

I love the storage, I think the configuration is cleverly done and it makes really good use of the available space. I don't quite get the pizza pocket thing and I can't figure out where my eggs are supposed to live. The product spec says there is an egg container and a wine rack but I can't find them. And it looks like I'm going to have to start drinking my beer out of a can instead of a bottle...

  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?

It dispenses water and ice! My old fridge couldn't do that. You have loads of control over temperature and humidity, my old fridge had very basic temperature controls. This fridge sings and dances. My old fridge didn't. Thought it is a similar size, the clever use of space means there is a lot more of it. It is much easier to find things in this fridge freezer than in my old one. My old fridge had an A++ rating which was one of the reasons I bought it. This one is only A.

  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?

I find the LED a bit... bright blue. It is fairly easy to use though I find the temperature settings a bit confusing/unintuitive. And the user manual does not explain them (or anything else) very well. I like the child lock but I bet it won't take long before the five-year-old figures out how to work it. The seven-year-old already has.

  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?

The cold water/ice dispenser is wonderful. Everybody loves it, and I'm happy that we are all drinking lots of filtered water.

  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

It is living in the kitchen where the old fridge used to live. It looks a bit like the Tardis has landed, slightly incongruous in my beautiful but dilapidated kitchen. Getting the water supply there was a bit of a juggling act but luckily my DH is very hands-on and I found a lovely plumber before the fridge arrived.

GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer · 05/08/2011 13:39
  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?

First impressions were of the sheer size of the thing. It is a lot bigger than I envisaged, however I like the design as my current fridge/freezer is about 7 feet tall (exaggeration) and is really inconvenient to use, as well as looking daft in my kitchen. I like the dual door design of it with the freezer underneath. Its arrival cause great excitement - my daughter invited her boyfriend around for its arrival Hmm. We all stood in the hallway and got in the way cooing over it.

  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?

LOVE the stainless steel finish. It goes beautifully in my kitchen (which is stainless steel, black and white) and I like the 'industrial' look about it. I must say I agree with everyone else that the grey textured side panels really let it down. I would have much preferred it to have stainless steel side panels to match. I suppose in many kitchens this wouldn't matter as the side panels would be hidden by cupboards/units, however they are very visible in my kitchen layout so it is a little disappointing. The textured grey just looks cheap - if it could not be stainless steel it would have been a lot better to have plain untextured black. Not grey as it is not quite the same colour as the stainless steel and looks like an afterthought.

  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?

The storage space is incredibly well designed. A friend has an american fridge (the usual side by side fridge/freezer design) and although it is huge on the outside, the inside space is actually quite small. Plus it is a pest to use, with a lot of the storage being at the bottom of the fridge. This fridge is configured a lot better. I like the fact that the shelves are adjustable, and really WIDE door shelves which is great, as these are usually too narrow in many fridges. The deli tray is also a really good idea - this is going to be my favourite feature I think. I have no idea about how high the humidity should be set however I will look this up. I think the freezer space is brilliant - really like the big door and handles. It actually looks as if it won't store much on first glance however it is rather decieving and it holds a lot. My daughter screamed when she opened the freezer!

  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?

There is no comparison. My old fridge was rubbish. It frosted up all the time, leaked, the door seals didn't work properly and it was hateful.

  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?

I haven't been anywhere near this as my daughter and partner have played with it - no doubt I will have a go in the next few days!

  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?

Unfortunately when the installation team came they couldn't fit the filter, so we cannot use the water/ice dispenser. The Sprint man thought that the wrong filter was sent, however I rang Samsung helpdesk (which was a farce at first because nobody recognised the model number, however in the end someone realised this fridge was part of a trial for mumsnet and was able to help) and they confirmed that the filter was the correct model, however there could be a problem with the fitting the filter plugged into. They have arranged for a Samsung engineer to call me within 48 hours and to arrange a service visit.

  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

I am lucky in that my kitchen is large, so the fridge has got price of place along the back wall (where there was previously nothing). However I cannot fit my table and chairs in the kitchen anymore (which is a good thing as I hated them and wanted an excuse to get a new and smaller table anyway)

Update - DP read the instruction manual and it turns out that the installer hadn't tried to insert the filter correctly. So DP has fixed it in and we now have filtered water and ice. Grin

I LOVE the water filter thing. We keep on having loads of water. The crushed ice is brilliant (yes it does go all over the floor) and I know we are going to use this feature a lot.

DP and DD have just come back from the supermarket (they went to Asda - the OUTRAGE at putting Asda food in the new fridge) and they bought loads, and the fridge and freezer look half empty. I cannot WAIT until Christmas as I usually have a nightmare fitting things in the fridge, and end up storing loads of stuff in the car boot Hmm.

I really like the handles by the way - a really good design imo.

Dislike the manual - it would be far better to have had a glossy manual printed. The drawings in the book are lame. It would be far better to have clear photos of the features. I can't work out where the pizza pocket is either.

But THANK YOU SAMSUNG. What a brilliant bit of kit.

HattiFattner · 05/08/2011 23:03

i have a little constructive criticism......the resevoir under the water dispenser - it would be better if it drained somewhere....ours gets full every day and I have to mop it up or have water all over the floor.

WhipMeIndiana · 06/08/2011 21:19

Oh where oh where is our pizza pocket, oh where, oh where can it beeeeeeeeee

nenevomito · 06/08/2011 21:24

Well I cheated on my fridge freezer today with an LG in my friend's house.

The space in the samsung is so much better. However their ice dispenser didn't spill ice on the floor as I took the glass away. I liked it. I used it again and again,

I've not been able to look Arnold Fridginator in the doors since we got back. Will he know that I fiddled with the dispenser on another? Will he ever forgive me?

GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer · 06/08/2011 21:27

Well, I don't blame you, if Arnold keeps shooting his load all over the floor.

MrsKwazii · 06/08/2011 22:44

Evening all! Held a party today and the fridge is officially a super-dooper entertaining fridge. Christmas is going to be a doddle.

I used ice and the chilled water to fill the drinks bucket and fitted many platters of food and numerous desserts into the party fridge. It was also the centre of attention as everyone came in. They couldn't believe that I was testing it and had been given it for free Grin

My only gripe is that there isn't that much ice to be had in one go, and it does take quite a while to make more. Would probably start stockpiling into the freezer a few days before a party next time.

nenevomito · 07/08/2011 00:03

Grin GetOrf.

Its not my fault if Arnold is so big and manly and full of all those things that make me happy - Chocolate on the shelf, wine in the door and the body of my DH in the roomy freezer drawer.

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?

I thought OMG its huge and was a bit worried that it would dominate the kitchen. It does but I don't mind!!!! My children loved it and were very excited. I actually liked the handles and the look of the front...looks very expensive and well built imo. I agree with others and didn't like the sides - especially as in my kitchen they are exposed. The sides are just ugly but I plan on getting some 'fancier' magnets and using the side as a notice board.

  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?

I like the stainless steel finish - black gloss would also be nice but wouldn't match my kitchen.

  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?

The space is very well thought out. I like the double fridge as the side by side arrangement of most american style fridges has put me off them in the past. Plenty of space - did a full shop which was usually squeezed into the old fridge but this time the firdge looked almost empty. I like the large bottom draw which is very very useful and the folding/ sliding shelves are a great bonus. I would like somewhere to store eggs as i do use the firdge for that and currently have them in a bowl in there but there's no way to sort by their age iykwim. Not really bothered about the loss of a wine shelf....the wine shelf in the last fridge used up way too much space.

Can't work out the humidty levels of the veg/ fruit boxes and the instructions need to clarify what thats all about but there is enough room for lots of veg in there.

Also like that there is lots of storage in the compartments at the side. This is really really useful.....and the milk compartment is large enough to fit a 6 pint carton which is great for me as my children drink alot of milk! Couldn't buy the 6 pint ones before because they wouldnt fit in and then leaked if placed sideways.

  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?

It is much better. We had a cream smeg which probably looked a little nicer if you like that retro styling but inside the smeg was crap. Very cheap plastic which meant that all the freezer doors were broken within the year and always dripped water all down the back making food soggy and meaning that I had to constantly mop it up.

the samsung thus far seems to have neither of those problems.

  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?

Yes its easy to use - kids have worked it out quickly and thank god for the child lock which my youngest has not quite cottoned onto yet!

  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?

we love this - one week in and the children are still using it alot and drinking plenty of water. The ice thing is great too and its good to have it on tap. If I was being fusy I'd say the ice comes out too quickly and its not crushed and cubed, more like broken and lumps - but this doesn't bother me.

  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

Its living in the kitchen in the space where old fridge was. We had more space here as the bin and spare breakfast bar stool lived in the gap but I've just relocated them to make room. We have a galley kitchen and it does dominate the room and you have to see the sides. I think it would look best if it was set into cupboards rather than stand alone, but it still is a lovely treat to have.

One further thing is that it seems 'noisy' the whirring noise etc has anyone else found that? Also it makes a bit of clunk from time to time - presumably thats the ice!

Overall I'm thrilled and so is everyone else who's paid a visit to see the beast!

mygirllollipop · 07/08/2011 13:00
  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?

First impressions were that the FF was HUGE and sleek. DH and DC love it too. Not sure whether I like the space and status better or the water and ice dispenser. Is it frost free? Because we seem to be getting frost on the left hand side of the freezer. If it's not frost free I think that would be silly to make a FF this big and modern without it being frost free. I'm not fussed on the can rack in the fridge as we don't use cans. I'm not keen on having a chest-style freezer that I have to bend over to get to.

  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?

Love the SS finish, definitely prefer it to other finishes, anything other than SS wouldn't be modern. It would look better being SS all around BUT I am compelled to clean the front at leasdt twice a day, if there was more SS finish I would be forever cleaning it!

  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?

We went shopping twice to come close to filling the available space. I am liking the amount of space. There's enough room for everything we used to store in our old FF and more. I like the versatility of the shelves, should I need space. Shelves/storage are squuezed into every available space. I can't think of a different set-up except for the inclusion of a wine rack!

  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?

This FF is so much more bigger and sleeker than my old one, it has much more space and versatility and I now have a water and ice dispenser and temperature/humidity control.

  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?

I like being able to control the temperature et al from an LED display - it has more status than turning a kno inside the fridge! I find it very easy to use, all self-explanatory.

  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?

How much water is my family drinking now I have a FF with filtered water dispenser! Having ice and cold water on demand over the warm weather has been a god-send! The dispenser is used daily by everyone in the household.

  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

The FF is in my (first floor) kitchen. The only problem we had getting it there was having to take the bannisters off the stairs.

MrsKwazii · 07/08/2011 20:03

Oh, one thing that my old f/f had that I wish this one did is an alarm if the door is left open. Left the fridge door open earlier for about 15 minutes. My old one would beep after two mins, which was very handy.

I'm a bit late to this thread, as only managed to get someone in to connect the fridge to the water supply yesterday. I absolutely love it, thank you so much mumsnet! To answer your questions:

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?

I absolutely loved the fridge as soon as I saw it. It is almost twice the size of my old one, and the space is used really well. I don't have a DH/DP and only one DD who is 5, so she's not really interested in it to be honest! The best thing about it is the icemaker and water filter, without a doubt. I also love the overall appearance of it, and the digital display panel. The lights inside are fantastic as well. My only concern was that the fridge may use up more electricity than the old one, as I am on a tight budget. It is too early to tell whether or not this will be the case.

  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?

I like it. My last fridge was white, and constantly dirty. I think this one will be easier to clean, and the sticky fingerprints won't be quite so obvious! It looks much better in my kitchen, which has black tiles and work surfaces, than the old white one.

  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?

I think it's a really clever use of space designed really well. I like the divided shelf that slides into itself, and I love the fact that the doors have so much storage, perfect for all the bottles and jars of sauces/condiments/jams and pickles which used to get lost somewhere at the back of the old fridge only to resurface months later, well past their use by dates! My favourite part is the huge deli drawer at the bottom - it's so well hidden that my DD hasn't discovered it yet, so it is currently home to my secret stash of chocolates and cakes that I don't want her to find! Blush

  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?

Nothing worse about it at all, it's miles better in every way! Sturdier, bigger, better looking, better use of space and with the added extra of ice and water dispenser.

  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?

I'm still getting to grips with it. When I first got the fridge it displayed the temperatures of the fridge and the freezer. It no longer does this for some reason - I don't know if this is usual or not, I will have to consult the manual.

  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?

I've only had the use of this facility since yesterday so haven't fully got to grips with it yet, but DD is looking forward to having ice in her drinks, and I think it will be a Godsend on hot days. I'm also planning to use the ice facility for cocktail making, which I am looking forward to!

  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

It is in the kitchen, in the space where the old fridge stood. Easy to find space, I just had to move my table and chairs over slightly in order to be able to open the doors fully. I had a bit of trouble getting it connected to the water supply as we had to drill holes through the back of the kitchen cupboards to thread the tube through, but it was well worth it!

bucksmum · 08/08/2011 10:38

Wow I have a self healing fridge freezer! yesterday the lights came on and we now have cold water and ice!! No idea what happened suspect we probably have a loose connection but hey its working now :)

  1. What were your first impressions of the fridge freezer? What did your DP/DCs think? What did you like best about it? What didn't you like, and why?

I thought that it was a huge monster of a fridge but at the same time it looks elegant and very sleek and shiny. DH thought the same and spent quite a while opening it and closing it! I like the fact that the sides are different and are the mottled dark grey colour.

  1. What do you think of the stainless steel finish? Do you prefer it to other finishes or is there a different finish you'd prefer?

I think the stainless steel finish looks very elegant. I do worry that it'll be difficult to keep fingermark free though, especially with 21 month old DD around! As above, I like that the sides are different.

  1. How are you finding the storage space available in the fridge and freezer? Are there any compartments/shelf arrangements you really like? Or any you'd prefer to be set up differently? Is there enough space to fit everything you want in it?

I like the arrangement of the fridge, however, I find that there isn't much space for open bottles. I've had to put the folding shelf up to stand bottles there. This dramatically reduces the space in the fridge. I like the two drawers in the freezer so that not everything is piled on top of each other.

  1. How does the fridge freezer compare with your old one? Is there anything specific that's better or worse?

My old fridge freezer is also a Samsung but it's a cheaper model. However, my old one has more space in both the fridge and freezer and has a clear ice box so you can see how much ice you have. I can't decide yet if side by side or top and bottom is best. Time will tell.

  1. What do you think of the LED display panel? Do you find it easy to use or not?

I like the LED panel and I did find it easy to set the temperatures. I haven't used it for more than that yet but I think it's easy enough to use. I like the blue colour and I love the way the freezer lights up when it's open.

  1. And how about the cold water/ice dispenser - are you using it much? Does your family like having it or not?

I use the cold water and ice dispenser every day, several times, and it is encouraging me to drink more water. For some reason DD finds the sound of the ice dispenser hilarious! The cat is less impressed.

  1. Where is the fridge freezer living in your home? Did you find it easy or difficult to find a space for it to fit in to?

It is in the kitchen. We already had space for a large fridge freezer. It's only a matter of time before DD covers it in fridge magnets.

MrsKwazii · 08/08/2011 20:27

Ooh, does it MBJ?
