Honest question. Is this site a religious site?

It seems to me there's a large amount of Christian posts. I've also noticed a fair amount of disapproval for other religions.

I am an atheist. I don't really want to be part of a christian site posing as a parenting site.

So is this actually a Christian place?

onager - you mean it stinks and it makes you cry?

beanieb · 26/01/2009 19:04

I'm an Atheist and I haven't noticed any religious bias. Just as in life mumsnet has some Christian people on it. As an Atheist I choose not to live my life making constant jusdgements about people based upon their religious choices just as i would hope they don't..

OrmIrian · 26/01/2009 19:05

No.

How odd that you should think that.

Hecate, good one!

I was probably thinking of Shrek's "Ogres are like onions, Donkey. They have layers" but I don't always read what I type in.

There have been a bunch of religious things recently partly around the whole Rev thing, I think. Mumsnet doesn't strike me as a Christian place at all. It is a place where if you use "witch" in a negative context you'll be pulled up by the pagans, and where you'll get Jewish posters discussing the ins and outs of kosher cooking and other things that I forget (I can name several Orthodox Jewish posters off the top of my head, anyway). And there are oodles (relatively speaking) of Muslim posters. And lots and lots and lots of atheists. As someone said, just wait for the next faith schools thread (although I've given up posting on those now, I imagine UnquietDad is still rallying the forces).

I can also think of several avowed Christians on the site. But no more than simple statistics would suggest. And only a few who bring it up a lot (and I don't resent those posters bringing it up a lot because it's clearly an intrinsic part of who they are and they are warm and funny and intelligent posters and post on lots of other subjects too).

I do have the Religion topic hidden, mind you, so for all I know maybe the Christians are all plotting board takeover in there. But I rather doubt it.

It's not a Christian site, no. It's not a pro-anything site, really. There are lots of posts on almost any subject you care to mention. As others have said, there are plenty of bumsex threads but I don't think this is a bumsex site masquerading as a parenting site...

EffiePerine · 26/01/2009 19:40

I was going to suggest posting about what colour to paint your kitchen to judge the depth of materialism on the site

then I saw your thread about ramekins

PadDad · 27/01/2009 07:11

Quite a few posters here seem to be saying, "How could it be a Christian site? Look at all the references to bumsex!"

Is there a prohibition against that in the Ten Commandments?

Or, conversely, do you have to have bumsex to be a good agnostic/atheist?

BlueSapphire77 · 27/01/2009 07:37

Non practising tho

You will find lots of religions on here, but not one person that shoves their religious views onto others, at all.

Most MN'ers are very tolerant and helpful, and i find religion comes into it not one little bit.. And i am fairly new here too.

Takes all kinds to make the world so interesting

OP hope you settle in soon and begin to enjoy the site and the ppl on it

BlueSapphire77 · 27/01/2009 07:39

WHERE are these fabled bumsex threads can't seem to find them

hallowed be thy name

on earth as it is in heaven.

piratecat · 27/01/2009 07:47

but what are you reading to get this impression??

I have used mumsnet for nearly 3 yrs , and looked at that many topics, and would never have contemplated your question. Have you honed in on one or two threads, that have been a debate?

Also, if you have an opinion of other religions, then surely it is your right? Have you seen dissaproval from Christians, if so where?

and no, i'd say this was a multifaceted site, that reflects the broad spectrum of religions, beliefs right across the board.

psychomum5 · 27/01/2009 07:50

WHERE have you been looking to even think this about MN??? You clearly haven;t looked hard, or been here long, or did you type one word into the search bar and it threw you here??

or are you just trying to test the waters on here before coming in and starting a complete ruckuss(however the fuck yoou spell that word??)............

Fleurlechaunte · 27/01/2009 08:00

Eh???

This really is the absolute last thing I would have ever thought about MN.

glitterfairy · 27/01/2009 08:20

havent read all of this but will later!

LOL at christian site as a born again Richard Dawkins admirer! Perhaps this is an atheist site but hides it well.

MaryBS · 27/01/2009 08:21

Would you like me to pray for you?

cmotdibbler · 27/01/2009 08:31

This is the place I have seen the most humanists ever - we just don't feel the need to shout about it that much

I'd say in this respect (though not necessarily in all others), Mumsnet gives a fairly accurate representation of the general population.

The difference is, that this being the internet many people find it easier to be open about their beliefs, and there are more serious conversations going on than you'd have in everyday life.

I have friends in RL who probably don't know that I'm a Christian, not because I'm ashamed of it and trying to hide it, but because our level of communication tends to be about everyday things, the things we know we have in common (the weather, the local community, the school). I'm not the kind of person who accosts people at bus stops to tell them I'm a Christian.

UnquietDad · 27/01/2009 10:08

Plenty of humanists, atheists and agnostics on here - all pretty vocal, you'll find.

But it is unusual in that it's the only forum of any sort I've seen with a dedicated "Philosophy, Religion and Spirituality" section. An awful lot of woo is talked in there. Don't go in if you value your sanity.

Various other groups are disproportionately represented here, e.g. private school users and cupcakers.

pavlovthecat · 27/01/2009 10:08

I would say, if there are a large amount of christian posts, that is because there are either a large amount of christians wanting to post, or that there are a few christians who have a lot to say !!!

Nothing wrong with christians posting is there? I know for a fact that there are people from other religions, and people from no religions here, all with views, opinions, support and advice to give.

Siriusmew · 27/01/2009 10:18

I think this OP has come about because of the recent Rev debacle.
