Honest question. Is this site a religious site?

It seems to me there's a large amount of Christian posts. I've also noticed a fair amount of disapproval for other religions.

I am an atheist. I don't really want to be part of a christian site posing as a parenting site.

So is this actually a Christian place?

surely that would depend on your own relgion. I mean I'm a Christian and a lot of my family are also Christians, I go to church where I have friends that I see outside of churcfh - of course they too are Christians.

I dare say if I were a Jew then chances are a lot of my family would be Jewish and I would have a social network that included a lot of Jews.

lljkk · 26/01/2009 18:22

When I first joined there was a strong "Church of Gina Ford" flavour to MN, but that's as close to religiousness as I've noted.

TheThoughtPolice · 26/01/2009 18:22

definitely less scandalous, after all we've nothing to rebel against

So at the OP I had to roll my eyes twice!

Portofino · 26/01/2009 18:23

I'm sure that some of the Bum Sex and the recent guilty secrets threads would have any really religious people running for the hills!

combustiblelemon · 26/01/2009 18:24

Catholic circles are very neat. With the slightest hint of old incense and a whiff of guilt.

onager · 26/01/2009 18:33

Onager climbs to the top of mumsnet and runs the Atheist Flag up the pole

(it's transparent so you can see clearly through it)

MegBusset · 26/01/2009 18:41

I'm an atheist and would never dream of being biased against certain religions -- I disapprove equally of all of them

follderol · 26/01/2009 18:43

Why are you raising your eyebrow at the OP? theresonlyme?

Because of your sentence -

"I don't really want to be part of a christian site posing as a parenting site"

You sound like you think MN isn't honest about what it is and make it sound like Christian people are not worth exchanging posts with.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 26/01/2009 18:47

Thereis also someone on here who is aboutto be dumped by her Vampire boyfriend

fryalot · 26/01/2009 18:48

I used to be an agnostic but I just wasn't sure.

then I thought about being an atheist but finally decided I didn't believe in anything

folderol - nah, this isn't a religious site at all, but there are quite a lot of religious threads around at the moment. Stick around and you'll see that us lot can fall out about anything, from bottle feeding, to ear piercing, to P & T spaces in supermarkets, to religion.

Just don't mention the antichrist fruit shoots

MoreSpamThanGlam · 26/01/2009 18:49

I used to consider myself a Christian...if anything Mumsnet has made me go in the opposite direction.

combustiblelemon · 26/01/2009 18:49

Yup, MN is full of stealth Christians waiting to leap out and convert you.

Blu · 26/01/2009 18:51

I have never thought that MNHQ was an undercover evangelist operation..the Mn philosphy seems very secular. They might be a marketing arm of Boden though.

My views are v athiest, but am pleased to hear the views of others and many of my fave posters and MN friends are women of faith.

madlentileater · 26/01/2009 18:51

where are all the humanists! come on let's be having you!
I don't find MN a religious place, but I do value reading other people's (religious or otherwise) viewpoints, experiences etc.
i remember ages ago asking Muslim MNers to shed light on my ignorance, would be too worried it would seem nosey/intrusive in RL, here people can ignore a q if they choose.

Well I was asking the question whether it was or not. And I didn't make any value judgement of Christians nor did I say they aren't worth exchanging posts with, just that I'd not choose to spend my spare time on a religious site.

perhaps the site is going through a contemplative phase

wait till the recession lifts and we'll be back to shoes and home improvements

Tortington · 26/01/2009 18:57

you haven't looked around enough or spent enough time on here if thats the pigeon hole your putting mumsnet in.

its is literally all things to all people.

take your time

mysterymoniker · 26/01/2009 18:59

what's with the 'honest question' in the subject line?

is it akin to 'I'm not racist but' or 'I'm not trying to be funny but' or ?

onager · 26/01/2009 19:00

To me Mumsnet is currently a small onion.

Desiderata · 26/01/2009 19:01

What a strange OP.

I haven't noticed any religious affiliation on here. I would have said that most of us are irreligious, tbh.

I'm personally into trollism, and it's gaining ground, I can tell thee!

eekamoose · 26/01/2009 19:03

IME the number of "Christian posts" is far outweighed by the number of

knitting posts
chicken keeping posts
mooncup posts
