Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

Another one deeply invested in the outcome.

I quite liked the idea of GPs but we ended up with gerbils instead.

I've just discovered this thread as I'm sitting watching our 3 guinea pigs run around our living room floor. I'm so excited to see your new arrivals when they appear :)

OP I hear you about all the work guinea pigs entail. We switched to aubiose/hay for the main hutch and kept fleeces for floor play. It's so much easier, but far more messy! (ours live full time in our living room too)

Thank you so so much for your kind offer but I'm actually pretty well set up ❤️ xxx I've spent more than I care to admit on Guinea pig accessories and equipment over the years 🙈

You're welcome.

BuffaloGirl · 15/02/2024 20:43

Just another place marker 😬

RandomMess · 15/02/2024 20:50

I am so gutted that I am now very allergic to hay SadSadSad

Not to mention several house cats now in residence.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/02/2024 20:52

Another one watching and very invested!
can’t wait for the pics 😍

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/02/2024 20:55

I'm so following this and I've never had guinea pigs.

Except that time when we hosted the class pig over a half term to my dogs' delight.

NCTDN · 15/02/2024 21:02

I really thought there would be news today!

ymemanresu · 15/02/2024 21:05

Excited to see baby piggy pictures and you sound great by the way! 😊

Soonenough · 15/02/2024 21:06

We had a similar experience. Bought guinea pig and all the necessary for our daughters birthday . Thought she was a nice looking healthy pig. My daughter adored her and was so diligent about care. Two weeks after we had her my daughter came screaming one Saturday to tell us that the pig had had 4 babies ! Four perfectly formed tiny guinea pigs in various colours .Scrambled to see if they needed any special things but they were fine.It was Sumner and we had an outdoor pen for daytime. All the kids on the neighbourhood had such fun watching them . Knew it was time for good homes when Mum seemed to get fed up of them crawling on her. Had to get rid of all as no way of sexing them and didn't want to have inbreeding .

Looking forward to seeing the babies, they are do very cute ..

Lurking for the pics.

Somethinggenericandforgettable · 15/02/2024 21:27

Have a dissertation due soon but here I am checking back for mini bundles of fluff.

PointerSister · 15/02/2024 21:44

Oh my goodness *shamelessly placemarking 🤩. My DD and I are totally on board with pig watch 🥰

InAPickle12345 · 15/02/2024 21:55

Oh wow, so many new people to share this experience with! I love the shameless place marking ❤️

@Somethinggenericandforgettableany chance you could switch you dissertation topic to GPs? I promise I'll provide lots of research content! 😂

@Soonenough im actually so glad I'm not the only one that didn't notice my GP was pregnant until very late, I've felt a right fool since the realisation dawned!

@ymemanresu you're so kind, thank you so much x

@NCTDN I was convinced that today would be the day, I kept waking every 2 or so hours last night with pure nerves! Any day now 😬

You're all so lovely, I'm so glad I started this thread. The advice and the stories and camaraderie is just great... all we need now is babies!!!

@InAPickle12345 A topic such as "Do GPs have a soothing effect on stressed students?"

Alpacasarefluffy · 15/02/2024 21:59

Also placemarking! I love Guinea pigs, had four growing up. My now DH is allergic so probably won’t have them again, but they are such lovely wee animals! Sending good wishes to the expecting mummy pig!!

So I used to use wood shavings for bedding, bit dusty but I didn't mind it. Disposing of it was a bit of a nightmare, I had filled two compost bins in next to no time.

When my girl lost the use of her leg, I switched to fleeces. She drags her little leg behind her now (barely slows her down though!) so the fleece is softer for her to do that. When it happened the vet was concerned that the leg would start being grazed and damaged, that it would start to just lose all muscle mass and she had reached out to other specialist colleagues to prepare for amputation when the time came. We've even checked out little GP wheelchairs.... I know, I know! 😂

BUT, this girl is bullet proof! Muscle has definitely wasted but absolutely no grazing of the leg and she is more than just coping, she's a real happy little girl and the vet and I even spoke this week about how we don't think she'll ever need an amputation now. She has just adapted like the little champ she is!

The fleeces are a pain but I think they're best for her.

I would support this work without hesitation!!! And I think it's an incredibly important topic that requires extensive research! Imagine every students dorm room had a GP? Exam stress would plummet I'm sure! 😊😜

I need to see these baby piggies, so exciting 😍

Advice400 · 15/02/2024 22:10

Ooohhhh popped back to see if they've arrived! I get so excited everytime my inbox has an email saying "Shit..!!!" 😆

TriceratopsRocks · 15/02/2024 22:13

Ah yes I see - I can imagine it's so much gentler and easier for her to get around on fleece. I hadn't thought of that. It was just your post gave me flashbacks of the amount of laundry and drying we used to get though! We'd turn the fleeces one day and wash them the next. Plus the giant floor fleeces, which we still use (which started life as king size mattress protectors). The main hutch now only takes 30 minutes to fully clean out once a week. But I really need to add on to that the weekly taking the hoover to bits to pull out all the stray hay that I try not to hoover up but invariably manage to! (Yes, the hay does end up everywhere...)

ShrinkingDaffodil · 15/02/2024 22:14

Following 👀🐽

TriceratopsRocks · 15/02/2024 22:14

Oh and guinea pig wheelchairs! I never imagined they could be a thing. Your old girl really does look and sound wonderful.

Following too ☺️

😂😂😂 I should have chosen a better title really, but 'Shit, shit, shit!' was all that was going through my mind at the time 🙈

No babies yet... it's funny, I'm so excited to provide adorable baby pics for all the lovely people here, but equally terrified that there will actually be babies in my house 😂
