Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

Awww, they're beautiful! Well done mama pig.

I'm so pleased everything went well, op.

Redmat · 18/02/2024 12:36

We used to be fascinated by the different colours our babies were . All so different . I think it was one of the reasons we kept breeding them forso many years! Dont worry we were not heartless breeders. We had different mums and they were all adored. Baby guinea pigs are the best.

spottydinosaur · 18/02/2024 12:44

So glad they are here safe & sound! Another one who can't believe how big they are!
Congratulations 🎉

SussexLass87 · 18/02/2024 12:45

Ah congratulations OP! Just found this thread and it's made my day.

CorvusPurpureus · 18/02/2024 12:46

The one with the crest could be Sundae. Like a squirt of cream!

Very cute OP 😊

Robin198 · 18/02/2024 12:46

I don’t have Guinea pigs.
I do have a significant presentation tomorrow I should be prepping for now but I am fully invested in these baby Guineas!

Great thread!

Robin198 · 18/02/2024 12:50

Can somebody please tell me why I’m crying actual tears over these baby Guinea pigs…..

MrsH497 · 18/02/2024 12:52

Congratulations OP and mummy pig; they are adorable. I've been silently following this thread for a while (we used to have guinea pigs too) and its been a delight to read. The best thread of the year so far:-)

Crumbs, babies could turn up at any minute. They're generally pregnant for less than 10 weeks. Try not to disturb her too much... Baby guinea pigs are really cute, tiny versions of their parents when they're born. Fully furry with teeth, not all pink and helpless like rabbits. I'd rather have surprise piggies than buns. Good luck... Send photos, lol.

They are cute indeed!

Absolutely gorgeous.

We had a similar "surprise" many years ago when one of our two "girls" turned out to be pregnant. Two lovely babies

I say "girls", because two months later she had another litter. Guinea pigs experience something called "postpartum oestrus" - ie if they get the chance they mate again immediately after giving birth. Turned out that "Norma" was "Norman" and had taken advantage of her. (Or she had taken advantage of him - whatever.)

EDIT: Just seen I am late to the party.

Congratulations - they are a delight!

Fudge sundae. Sunny or fudge for short.

BlueFlint · 18/02/2024 13:23

Congratulations!!! They are wonderful!

We had the exact same thing happen with a childhood piggy. Of course my parents said we couldn't keep the babies, can't have a mix of boys and girls etc etc. And then it turned out that all three babies were girls! And so, so cute. Guess who got to keep the lot in the end? 😄

I think Fonz because it's got a quiff!

One of mine has a crest - unfortunately the colouring of the poor girl combined with her sticking out ears means that she looks like the love child of Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak - but I loves her to bits!

RollOnSpringDays · 18/02/2024 13:35

yay! Congratulations. I had guineas for many years and a fair few litters of mini-pigs - they’re the most amazing baby animals in my opinion. Enjoy ☺️

Mrspatmoresspoon · 18/02/2024 13:46

Wheek Wheek!! The babies are here!!

Sending you a virtual basket full of dandelions and basil from my Guineas - Messi and Ronaldo (never let a 6 year old name your pets) 🙈

Peanut, pudding and honey are my suggested names ❤️

@smaaktlekker great prediction! 👏 You were spot on!

Mum and Auntie are now happily snoozing in bed together... they have never slept together! I can't believe how attentive my older girl is 😭

I wonder if auntie pig was treating the new girl differently because she sensed the pregnancy. So they might become closer now?

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 18/02/2024 13:48

I've been watching this thread for days. Delighted they are finally here safely. And SOOOO cute.

Congratulations.

And my vote is Biscuit, Fudge and Truffle.

DBSFstupid · 18/02/2024 14:21

OP what an absolutely lovely thread and story! My sincere congratulations to you and Mummy and Aunty and the 3 little fluff-balls!🤗

Eggsley · 18/02/2024 14:21

Aww I'm going for Biscuit, Fudge and Toffee 🥰

Todayzname · 18/02/2024 14:22

We had similar...... Guinea pigs are hard to sex with absolute certainty.

However they know.

So one of our females got pregnant from out other 'female'. Fine we could cope with that. The jump from 2 to 3 would be fine.

We didn't know when no.3 would arrive. We knew we'd have to keep our 'female' apart.

So one morning we came down to find a wonderful New Guinea pig. Just like an adult but smaller. Father separated.

Few weeks later the real female was pregnant again. They can get pregnant the day they give birth. He had a small window of opportunity that he took.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/02/2024 14:28

Similar to @Emotionalsupportviper years ago I had a "female" then DBro got a female ...who actually was female .
Litter as a result .
My Dad was adviced by "a bloke at work" to let the boar stay with them "he won't hurt the babies"
No , the boar loved the babies and straight away him and the sow created their second batch of piglets .

We learned from this and he lived side-by-side with Mum and her only female who we kept .
Couple of years later I bought a new sow ( I checked she was female) , she was already pg and had 1 sow piglet who we kept .

I think McVitie is a good name for a biscuit coloured animal GrinOr Topaz

Cafuddle · 18/02/2024 14:42

Something similar happened to us. Baby piggy had one baby. Other baby was a boy we got him neutered and keeping the 3. Had to separate them so no more babies appeared. Or rehome home once he is big enough.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/02/2024 14:46

They are huge !! How did your tiny piggy have such massive babies ?! Gorgeous OP, so pleased all is well.
