How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

I asked DP this evening and he didn't so much as bat an eyelid. Once a day he said, as if it was completely normal. A bit more at the minute due to I Claudius.

He also thinks about the Tudors a few times a week🤣

rachtimm · 13/09/2023 23:11

Appartly never but also got a rant about roads lol.

HellHound · 13/09/2023 23:28

DH responded as if he'd been caught doing something very naughty! "Erm well, there are some days I don't..." but to be fair he's a history buff, always reading miltary history in particular and loves linguistics.

Pallisers · 13/09/2023 23:30

For my dh it is the thirty years war. All roads lead to the thirty years war in his mind. He isn't an historian.

ErinBell01 · 13/09/2023 23:35

Just asked husband and he thought it was a weird question - then said, 'Probably a couple of times a week.' He then wondered why I laughed my head off but was happy to be told he seems to be 'normal'!

MrG answered "Maybe once every 6 to 8 months" and when I said "No, seriously ..." he laughed and said, well, he had absolutely no idea but that seemed to him like a reasonably vague answer.

Fair enough, really. I mean, how often do you think about Genghis Khan?

I was just enjoying giggling at this thread, but then I had to reply to say that I actually think about Genghis Khan 2-3 times a week.

Never but the Romans never came to Ireland. I do think their armour was cool and I have read I, Claudius.

Ah, but this is one reason why my (Irish) DP thinks about the Roman Empire almost every day, apparently. To quote, "Why didn't they want us?"

I haven’t got a husband but I know I think about the Roman Empire quite often. Some of my all time favourite reads and films are Empire related, e.g. Simon Scarrow’s Eagle series of books about Macro and Cato, HBO’s Rome. So anytime I see any of the cast of Rome it brings it to mind.
My daughter often has a Caesar salad if we’re out for a meal. Said daughter had an emergency Caesarean section with my oldest g’son. Said g’son graduated in Civil Engineering this year, so that brings in roads, viaducts, central heating etc. and how advanced all those were.
Politics and corruption- so widespread in the UK today - the Republic failed, but then the individual Emperor system also failed eventually.
Language and it’s often mis-use - “bread and circuses”, decimation, a Century of Legionaries was made up of 80 men not 100 (plus a Centurian, Optio, Standard Bearer and Clerk) as most people would think.
I’m in Scotland, and a great many people think the Romans didn’t go further than the two Walls. Not true, they sailed as far north as Orkney. They fought a fairly major battle no more than 30 miles from where I live on the East coast.
So, these aspects and more are all inter connected in my mind, when I think of one, the rest just follow.
Maybe I’ve just lived alone too long 😂

Every day for me. I'm doing Latin on Duolingo, having done it to A-level a million years ago. I've also just finished watching I Clavdivs. But I think about etymology a lot, and Roman remains all over the place, and the other day on a winding road, I was muttering about where were the bloody Romans when you need them, and then a few bits of Catullus and Pliny pop into my brain from time to time (long ago set books - less likely to think of Sallust and Tacitus, though Virgil and Ovid may pop up) and I find repeating verb tables to myself can be calming, which includes Latin ones, and then there's Asterix...

I also think about the Reformation/Tudors, the Industrial Revolution and the First and Second World Wars mostly daily, and the British Empire, but I did history at uni. Lot of Anglo-Saxons and Mediaeval stuff lately, too.

Copperfield27 · 14/09/2023 07:34

Everyday, multiple times. He says it's because he's a professor of Roman history but excuses, excuses. 😉

Indiagrace94 · 14/09/2023 07:36

My husband said “quite often, I made a quiz on it the other day” 😂😂😂

VenusClapTrap · 14/09/2023 08:03

“Not very often, perhaps once a week”

DebbieLouiseDairyleaCheese · 14/09/2023 08:53

Wtf?!

Just asked DH, and he scoffed "never, apart from when I'm driving on a Roman road, holding a coin or having a bath, so probably every other day...everything comes from Romans!!" Confused intense😂

mustardrarebit · 14/09/2023 09:01

My DH was very puzzled. "Never, consciously. Unless we're in a museum or it's on TV. I think about power tools." He's Italian.

belinda789 · 14/09/2023 09:04

Is "Thinking about the Roman empire" a euphemism?

Annemaria · 14/09/2023 10:24

This has to be a joke surely. But then I think about WW2 every day and I’m a woman.

MoxieFox · 14/09/2023 10:25

The Romans couldn’t afford Ireland given all the issues with trying to get Scotland, the rebellions along the Rhine, the invasions into their Egypt and also the growing threat of Persia in the East.

Strabo writes extensively about how while Ireland was a very rich island, it would be better to be trading partners than to invade, conquer and have to fund garrisons and fort-towns.

Hambleshamble · 14/09/2023 11:10

Great thread. Thank you!
Asked DH. Answer: Just when it comes up… yesterday actually! Then something about Stewart Lee’s partner Bridget and orgies. 😳.

Borka · 14/09/2023 11:19

My DH said "quite a lot, about twice a week "

I wonder what the equivalent historical period is for women. Mine would be Tudor or medieval.

Biddie191 · 14/09/2023 11:23

Loving Crostini's superior SH 😂
Mine said 'actually more often than you'd expect', and when pushed, 'a couple of times a week'

Is "Thinking about the Roman empire" a euphemism?

This is what my dh said when I asked him last night😆

He said he only thinks about the Roman Empire if it's to do with Monty Python Life of Brian. The 'What have the Romans ever done for us?' scene, or the one where the person is writing Romans go home, but can't write the language

Bloody daft post and even dafter thread.

Misery-guts.

I know - lol 🤣. Although I am beginning to think it could be a euphemism like some posters suggest 😂

Vikings and the Neolithic, for me personally.
