What is your post-apocalyptic occupation?

AIBU to ask you what your post-apocalyptic occupation would be?

With all the recent news about the shortage of skilled workers - HGV drivers, farm labourers, and today there are news about an emergency visa scheme considered for abattoir workers, I started wondering what would I do if the modern society suddenly fell back into - well, not Dark Ages exactly - but, say, mid-late 19th century ways of living.

And realised that I actually have very little in terms of real-life tradeable skills. In a world without computers, my other skills are worth zero to the community, and I would probably immediately fall to the bottom of the newly established social order. Grin

What about you?

I'm a paramedic, so would probably be an all round medicine women and midwife with whatever equipment, drugs and textbooks I could get my hands on.

But I can also navigate in mountains and (sort of) sail a yacht, so I could sail myself and others to the nearest (zombie infested) Island.

FreedomFaith · 15/10/2021 12:44

While my actual job is to do with computers, I'd probably be fairly useful in a post apocalypse world.

I can ride and train horses. If we can still use cars or vehicles, I could fix them. I'm good at archery and shooting. Good at cooking too. Know a reasonable amount on wounds etc that I could get by on keeping myself healthy and avoid infections.

I am a crap gardener though, so I'll definitely die from hunger unless I find a gardener to grow our food. Grin

JinxandBinx · 15/10/2021 12:51

I’m dual qualified as a nurse and midwife, so as long as there is people around, my job role won’t change haha

Thecathouse · 15/10/2021 12:56

I grow food and keep chickens already so I will be a poultry farmer / vegetable producer. In between that I will knit everyone's jumpers for them 😁

Also wildlife rehab will still be important right? I think I might be a busy person if life goes backwards

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/10/2021 12:57

My DH just burned lunch after being left alone with it for five minutes. Nonetheless, I am still fond of him and he will cause no trouble if we build him a spreadsheet out of sticks. Would it be OK if I bring him?

FindingMeno · 15/10/2021 12:59

Seems I need to try hard for selection.
I can grow veg, forage, make a decent fire and cook on it, shoot accurately, skin and gut, navigate, build shelters and I have a calm head in a crisis.
I would prefer to have employment on the home base and let other more disposable people fight and scavenge please.

FindingMeno · 15/10/2021 13:00

@JesusInTheCabbageVan in would your DH be interested in scavenging?....

Depends on whether we'd be interested in food poisoning, I suppose.

Also, he's not keen on rain or mud.

Jaxhog · 15/10/2021 13:05

I'm post-menopausal and really good at telling men what to do. So I could take charge of that stud island of men and be in charge of selection. I could make them do tests and run challenges.

Lemonyfuckit · 15/10/2021 13:06

@MrsTerryPratchett

I'm a crack shot. So that.
Ooo,that reminds me - there I was thinking my response would be something like making soup and bread etc but it turns out I'm actually a crack shot with a bow and arrow. So that could be quite handy post apocalypse.

Man slayer. Only the useless ones though.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/10/2021 13:07

I think I'd get by as a medic-type but could also grow veg.

LaBellina · 15/10/2021 13:09

Tarot reader (I do readings as a hobby and have been told that some of my readings are scarily accurate Shock)

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/10/2021 13:09

I can lance boils, suture wounds ( ordinary needle and thread will do until it runs out), remove foreign bodies from various body orifices without special medical equipment, splint broken bones with improvised materials if necessary.

Happy to offer my services but would likely be without anaesthetic, sorry!

RainbowCrossing · 15/10/2021 13:12

I find people are remarkably shite in a crisis and I am quite good in a sort of long running/things needs organising/where shall we start/life or death decisions kind of situation.

So I shall be organising teams to do all the needs-doing stuff and having the last word

Although a zombie will probably eat me on day 2 and it will turn out I was just a promising early character - like the guy with the camper van who died before they even got to the Greene farm. Or Carole's daughter.

dreamingbohemian · 15/10/2021 13:17

It's interesting that we're all predicting zombie apocalypse, when I was growing up it was always a nuclear apocalypse. I don't know which would be worse.

OneTC · 15/10/2021 13:18

Zombie apocalypse: lean protein supplement

Technical regression: I can trap and hunt

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 15/10/2021 13:20

I’m very organised so I could do a lot of getting the community in shape, that sort of thing. Checking on stocks and supplies.

I’ve also seen every episode of greys anatomy at least twice so could make a passable assistant medic if things were particularly bad.

Zombies just have us knocked off our top spot on the food chain don't they? Whereas nuclear has us all dying slowly of radiation sickness and bleeding out of our bottoms a la When the Winds Blows Confused

Are you Tara?!
Mynameisthecatwhogotthecream · 15/10/2021 13:31

probably medic/herbalist as I have studied pharmacognosy(study of meds derived from plants)

SockFluffInTheBath · 15/10/2021 13:38

I’m good at growing things, making lists, shooting far away things (I’m too squeamish to kill things but if you need a tin can knocking over I’m your woman Grin ).

BadlyFormedQuestion · 15/10/2021 13:40

Personally, I suspect that the apocalyptic event will get me. 😂

PyjamaFan · 15/10/2021 13:43

I've thought about this before!

I can grow fruit and vegetables, we keep chickens and bees, my Dad can fish and shoot. My DH and I can both cook and make things like jam, pickles, cider and wine. I can also knit and my DH is good at fixing things and building things out of wood.

I like to think we would be quite highly prized!!
