How do you catch a hedgehog?

This prickly butthead is Jumanji, she/he visits every night to eat all the cat food and, if you're stupid enough to be sitting outside with your shoes off, attack your -worms- toes.

Usually we just greet each other of an evening, however the last couple of visits I've noticed she has something around her neck, it's like blue plastic. It isn't stopping her eating or behaving normally - yet. But ideally I'd like to get it off of her.

Unfortunately she is very fast (hedgehogs can run and it's hilarious) and I don't have a trap.

Any ideas? She's sat opposite me munching a slug at the moment so I don't think she's is imminent danger.

Oh, I've missed this thread!

@Intercity225 I also missed your reply! Thank you for indulging my train obsession. Grin

Well apparently we’re back because I am now infested with Borrower hedgehogs!

I've just had an update about our hedgehog from the rescue lady - she is still alive but the poor girl has roundworm, lungworm and flukes.
She is tolerating the medication but still has a way to go.

Poor little hoglet. Well done for getting her help, you've more than likely saved her life.

@YesitsBess

Bess, so much for your new place not being suitable for hogs!! 😂🤣

have you had any updates on jumanji?

(name changing hog lover)

As far as I know Jumanji was released to live the life of Riley somewhere in Hampshire, however I’m now convinced him and his mates caught the bus down here?

Ask a catbrescue to borrow a small cat trap maybe? Not sure if they work for hedgies, but I'm sure they will advise

YesitsBess · 26/08/2022 10:57

sweet If you to respond but all is well and this is a zombie thread, we’re just having a small reunion tour 😂

LOLZ

I’ve name changed a few times since but I’m H8! Waves at @YesitsBess

Good to see the thread still going… we’re preparing for our 2022 influx which will no doubt start next month!

@EthelbertaChickerel … well done! Your hog has a long road ahead but it wouldn’t have stood a chance had you not intervened. Fluke is not good…

YesitsBess · 26/08/2022 20:47

@Halstead H8 Mate! Lovely to see you again! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY HEDGEHOGS AND WHY ARE THEY STEALING MY SOCKS!?!

Good to see you too!

Err… Because they’re prickly weirdos? 🤣

Or… they think it looks like good nesting materials. Maybe. But probably the first one.

YesitsBess · 26/08/2022 21:05

They’re out there now H8…..snuffling! I’m logging away diligently, ever since you told us about the hog log I do it for every hog (even when we first moved here and there was a dead one in the front garden 😢).

I’m also favouring the former. Maybe they think the socks have toe worms in them?

Any hog news?

They don't have any socks of their own? Poor deprived hedgehogs. <sobs> I have Victorian street urchins in mind, but these are Victorian street hedgehogs. 😁

More like Sea Urchins the spiny, sundry-stealing gits. I can’t afford to support six (SIX!) of the bastard things in their sock habit.

Actually I once found a snail in a sock of mine, it was a clean one I'd hung out to dry, and I'd left it overnight (to be darked on!) Spider willies don't bother me, but I didn't think I'd have to worry about sneaky snails! I think I started a thread about it!

YesitsBess · 26/08/2022 21:11

Brilliantly I am also responsible for the spider Willy thread. Misbehaving wildlife is my jam.

😀

Fair point, they are similar! They're Victorian hedgehog urchins, stealing socks from hardworking Mumsnetters! Very naughty of them, send them to the workhouse!

SapphireSeptember · 26/08/2022 21:13

Lol! I didn't know that was you, although I found that thread extremely funny. 😁

YesitsBess · 26/08/2022 21:17

I’m not responsible for ‘darked on’ although I genuinely wish I were because it lives rent free in my head!

I sent my daughter (now 22) the original spider thread recently and she loved it, it was like a diary of when we lived at the old house.

OP posts:
SapphireSeptember · 27/08/2022 21:57

I think of it often. Although I no longer dry clothes outside, since finding out it was making my hay fever worse.

Aww, that's really sweet! I read that thread years ago. Makes me feel all nostalgic.

YesitsBess · 27/08/2022 22:28

I hadn’t been on here for years and then found it and it was just a lovely read. I’d forgotten all about the sausage-eating kestrel, the jar of spiders and Thumbwitch and her walls full of bees! 😂

SapphireSeptember · 27/08/2022 22:59

Can you post the link to it please? I googled it and couldn't find it.

It also features the many swans who chose to ruin my life/inhabit the downstairs bathroom.

We have been remarkably Hog Drama Free so far this year!

We still have a few few regulars that we are feeding and watering religiously given the weather but we haven’t found any teeny ones yet… I wonder if the weather will put some of them off having second litters this year? Time will tell.

Give it another 6 weeks and we’ll probably start acquiring our winter 2022/23 visitors 🦔 I’ll let you know (and provide photos of course)!
