How do you catch a hedgehog?

This prickly butthead is Jumanji, she/he visits every night to eat all the cat food and, if you're stupid enough to be sitting outside with your shoes off, attack your -worms- toes.

Usually we just greet each other of an evening, however the last couple of visits I've noticed she has something around her neck, it's like blue plastic. It isn't stopping her eating or behaving normally - yet. But ideally I'd like to get it off of her.

Unfortunately she is very fast (hedgehogs can run and it's hilarious) and I don't have a trap.

Any ideas? She's sat opposite me munching a slug at the moment so I don't think she's is imminent danger.

Ooh HART has an Amazon wishlist. What a great idea! I wonder if we can ask for them to put on 'donated by Mumsnet' on the hedgehog houses?

YesitsBess · 03/11/2021 12:28

Thanks H8 mate!

I'm back up at the old place tidying up a few bits and am leaving one last bowl of cat food out for Slartibartfast.

4 hogs! What's the collective noun for hedgehogs? Please say a prickle...

@GrrrlPwr maybe just baffle them by saying "from Jumanji" Grin

I have no idea if anyone will ever read this, but I am sitting in my garden in Sussex surrounded by many sex crazed hedgehogs and I am giggling amd thinking of this thread and you all. Especially @H8H8H8 FUCKING HELL THEY ARE LOUD!

Of course this will get read.
I expect they're all shouting "CAREFUL!!!" at each other.

YesitsBess · 27/07/2022 00:00

Hehehehehhe! I am hoping for many Pikelets in my future!

I hope so too, as I'm sure you'll update us.
(This thread needs bumping for other insomniacs to enjoy)

FelicityBeedle · 27/07/2022 00:31

@YesitsBess So the new house has plenty of road savvy hedgehogs? Fantastic news.
perhaps we start a society, Horny Hedgehog Hunters for Hoglets

FelicityBeedle · 27/07/2022 00:31

As in we are hunting for horny hedgehogs producing hoglets, not that we are horny

YesitsBess · 27/07/2022 09:36

Hahahahaaaaaaaa!

Yay for more hedgehog news!

I accidentally broke up some horny hogs recently! There’s was a horrendous noise coming from the garden, I went to investigate to find the hedge rocking and so much huffing and puffing going on! I think I startled the love nest and they ran away! Still hoping for some hoglets though!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/07/2022 19:55

It definitely was hedgehogs? (Remembering a thread about noises from a hedge which weren't.)

FelicityBeedle · 27/07/2022 20:19

@ErrolTheDragon
The hedge that weren’t? Isn’t that a Children’s book :D

My fellow insomniacs we are now at SIX (6) that I can see and they're huffing up a storm. WTF is going on?! I mean....I don't need an explanation but I'm out here enjoying the cool air and it's like the Frog Song but with grunting hate potatoes.

They're rehearsing their Haka for the Spiky Hate Potato Rugby World Cup, clearly.

@NeverDropYourMoonCup I knew you'd have the lowdown! I saw one potato a few weeks ago and thought "aw, remember when everyone was telling their hedgehog stories on MN"

And then tonight I just thought "I AM UNDER SOME KIND OF MUMSNET CURSE WHICH INVOLVES ME BEING SURROUNDED BY HEDGEHOGS"

Honestly not sure how I continue as apparently I'm the local sex club/snack hub. How the fuck do I log this?!

Hello - Can I please have some hedgehog advice? We found this baby hedgehog yesterday- left out food and water.

When I checked on it this morning, she had fallen into a drain!

Thank goodness she was still alive, so I rescued her and have put her in a box with food and water, well away from our cats.

What should I do with her now? Put her back in a safer bit of the garden tonight, or take her to a rescue?

And what is the white bit on her back??

YesitsBess · 06/08/2022 09:41

The white bit on her back looks like a tick. Your local vet may well check her over and recommend a wildlife place to take her to. Keep us posted!

Missed this thread originally but so pleased to catch up with it now.

Fantastic thread and lovely to read about so many people helping hedgehogs. I am in NZ and have one or maybe two who visit the garden, drives the dog wild the following day as she tries to find them.

YesitsBess · 24/08/2022 21:28

What are you doing with that sock you prickly weirdo?!?

I've just had an update about our hedgehog from the rescue lady - she is still alive but the poor girl has roundworm, lungworm and flukes.
She is tolerating the medication but still has a way to go.

YesitsBess · 24/08/2022 21:52

You have done a brilliant thing then! She’s 100% in the right place and you’ve made that happen you wonderful person.

I love this thread. Mine are eating my socks and yours are in intensive care. It’s all going on.
