I am going to launch DP into the SUN for this.

Ten years. TEN YEARS of careful seasoning of my cast iron pan and he has "cleaned it". With wire wool.

After I pay Elon Musk to devise a trebuchet large enough to launch him directly into the Sun, does anyone have any advice as to whether this is even vaguely salvageable?

The very least he can do is put himself under the patio without further ado.

burritofan · 03/10/2021 20:46

How have you not brained him with it!

RB68 · 03/10/2021 20:47

salvageable but will need reseasoning, whatever possessed him

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 20:48

@Mariell you are so right! He's still maintaining he "cleaned" it! He destroyed it, he has destroyed my pan!

@burritofan it's tempting...the full Tom & Jerry...

He needs to buy you a new one. Although I will acknowledge his heart was in the right place!

HemanOrSheRa · 03/10/2021 20:48

Shock Oh dear Shock. Can you strip it right back and re-season it? I'd be furious too OP. I've got cast iron pans inherited from my Mum.

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 20:48

He has form for this. Don't start me on the wok....

It will re-season.

Pita tho.

APerfectSky · 03/10/2021 20:49

Hmm, difficult to say if it's salvageable. Has he admitted he was at fault? Is he likely to do it again?!

MrsRobbieHart · 03/10/2021 20:50

Aww I bet he’s a spoony fucker too?

FelicityBeedle · 03/10/2021 20:50

@Leeds2
His heart was not in the right place! It just shows he is consistently so far removed from household cooking and chores that he didn’t know how to look after a pan

cookiemonster5 · 03/10/2021 20:50

I am just starting to get there with my cast iron and before it even came into the house I warned everyone that no one touches that pan. I am the only one allowed to clean it.

I would be in tears.

No court in the land would convict you.

littleloopylou · 03/10/2021 20:50

That is absolutely horrific.

pastabest · 03/10/2021 20:51

Pretty sure that amounts to criminal damage

EKGEMS · 03/10/2021 20:51

Start rehearsing the 911 call and writing the "Suicide note" 🤣

Couldhavebeenme3 · 03/10/2021 20:51

Ooooh cracking opportunity to (get him to) strip it all back, using a wire brush drill attachment if he needs to be incentivised by manly power tools, and re-season.

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 20:52

@Leeds2 he can bloody well season the thing too. Ten years of love, I may file for pre-emptive divorce.

@HemanOrSheRa you feel my pain here right?! He's now asking how to fix it. Have suggested a time machine or listening to me about the only two pans in the entire house that he's not supposed to touch (in his family if you can't clean it with bleach and a sandblaster it gets thrown out).

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 20:56

I'm so pleased I'm not the only one who would be annoyed by this!

In his (pathetic) defense he did get himself a whole set of pans so he didn't have to deal with the "pans you get cross about" (two. There are only two pans).

He is good with housework and cooking except the bit about not cooking tomato sauces in a seasoned pan but cannot wrap his head around this particular pan.

Wroxie · 03/10/2021 21:02

I know cast iron (I have two pans that have been in my family for over 150 years and are like black mirrors, plus a collection of newer pieces that I had professionally ground to get rid of the pebbly surface left by modern sand-casting methods of production, and which are also like black mirrors) and my first question is - are you sure that is cast iron, and not carbon steel or something else? Because I've never seen actual cast iron with riveted handles. It's far too brittle and inflexible for that. And secondly, I think he has done you a favour because the "seasoning" left around the edges is a mess.

I'd be sticking the whole thing in a bucket outside with caustic soda for a couple of days and starting from scratch whether it's cast iron or carbon steel. This piece was long overdue for that anyway.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 03/10/2021 21:03

I don't really understand seasoning a pan. Can someone explain?

Wroxie · 03/10/2021 21:05

(I've just googled and it does appear that you can get cast iron with riveted handles - so I'll take that bit back!)

FluffyBooBoo · 03/10/2021 21:07

@EKGEMS

Start rehearsing the 911 call and writing the "Suicide note" 🤣
Do this! Leave a suicide note lying around with attempts at forging his signature at the bottom, and go around quietly rehearsing being the grieving widow!
Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 21:07

@Wroxie Interesting, it was a hand-me-down so your insight is useful there. My other pan has no rivets (and has been hidden now) and has a much better finish.

Gatekeeper · 03/10/2021 21:08

Show us yer pans @Wroxie!
