I am going to launch DP into the SUN for this.

Ten years. TEN YEARS of careful seasoning of my cast iron pan and he has "cleaned it". With wire wool.

After I pay Elon Musk to devise a trebuchet large enough to launch him directly into the Sun, does anyone have any advice as to whether this is even vaguely salvageable?

I've learnt so much from this thread after googling what seasoning a pan is. Does anyone season non stick pans?

Georgyporky · 04/10/2021 19:37

Got room for another stupid DH in the trebuchet?
Marble & wooden stuff in the dishwasher as well as a cast-iron griddle pan ?

TheChosenTwo · 04/10/2021 19:47

Oh god dh is a cast iron pan seasoning bore, I just sling them in the dishwasher. Life’s too short. He moans, I tell him to wash the fucking things up himself by hand if he’s that bothered.
Pans. They’re bloody pans!

TheChosenTwo · 04/10/2021 19:48

I put literally everything that will fit into the dishwasher. Wooden stuff, saucepans, whatever. He washes his knives separately himself, should bloody do his poxy pans too, they always look greasy and crusty to me anyway Confused

Pebbledashery · 04/10/2021 19:49

I'd be doing a Pauline Fowler and knocking him round the stupid head with it.

Bontanics · 04/10/2021 20:07

This is my worse nightmare. I've just invested in a cast iron pan after lusting after one for years. I've twittered DHs ear off about its special treatment so much that when he went to use it for the first time he actually asked me for a lesson before using it for the first time.

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 04/10/2021 20:17

OMG I would be FUMING! I inherited my cast iron pans and guard them jealously. Caught ex trying to put one in the dishwasher once. It wasn’t the last nail in the coffin, but it was definitely one of them! My dad spent 40 years seasoning them, and while he may have have been a terrible husband and not the best dad ever (well, he was lovely when he was there, he just just wasn’t there much much, my poor mum), he was a very good carer-of-pans!

Diva66 · 04/10/2021 20:23

I am shocked by the number of fabric scissors abusers out there!

MrsPepperpot79 · 04/10/2021 20:35

Mine put my beautiful, rosewood handled, sabatier boning knife in the dishwasher. He now looks nervous every time I sharpen it!

ThistleTits · 04/10/2021 21:07

@Yesitsbess

I'm so pleased I'm not the only one who would be annoyed by this!

In his (pathetic) defense he did get himself a whole set of pans so he didn't have to deal with the "pans you get cross about" (two. There are only two pans).

He is good with housework and cooking except the bit about not cooking tomato sauces in a seasoned pan but cannot wrap his head around this particular pan.

You wrap the pan around his head then.
Amitskitshaw · 04/10/2021 21:26

Had he not washed up before? In 10 yes? At least he didn’t put your Le Crueset behind a tree in the garden where would remain until found 12 months later!!!! All because he couldn’t be arsed to destroy it with wire wool.

Heavens to Betsy! That's some next-level kitchen shenanigans right there.

This might sound a bit weird, but personally, I've been waiting for @Wroxie to get her pan pics out.

As well he should. I hope you maintain eye contact whilst sharpening.

Are they clean?

Could I use them to cook for DD with allergies, if I had cooked using allergens last time I used the pan?

Yesitsbess · 04/10/2021 21:52

@Amitskitshaw the pans predate him.

I read him the responses in the car today and we both laughed a lot. He has asked, in detail, how he can fix the pan and look after it so am now worried he may take over as the pan nerd of the family. I'm keeping baby pan in my handbag just in case.

I wouldn't want to advise on allergies, that's above my nerd level. But hopefully someone can give you safe and sensible guidance

@NotMyCat

My ex once used metal utensils on my non stick pan. And then half a 500ml bottle of my limited edition ££ shower gel as "it smelled nice" Yeah, that's why I don't use 250ml to shower, I mean who needs that much?!
This would also be a declaration of war. I once watched a couple friend of mine become quite animated about the metal scrapey things in the very expensive Teflon pan.

Nightfeedwatcher · 04/10/2021 22:59

I’ve been reading this getting more worried that I used to scrape my mums pans to death trying to clean them…but after seeing a picture of a cast iron pan it turns out hers were actually just gross haha

calvados · 05/10/2021 00:38

That’s nothing. My husband soaked my inheritance silverware in a sink filled with caustic soda as he believed it would give it a thorough clean. It now resembles something a blacksmith would put on a horses hoof!

Mamanyt · 05/10/2021 00:44
@Mamanyt I may have done a slightly romantic sigh there reading about your sourdough starter.
AWWWWWWWWWWW! Her name, BTW, is Matilda. Once you've lived with something for that long, and you realize how alive it is, you tend to name it. I talk to her every time I feed her (you feed sourdough starter weekly....it gets to almost be a family pet!).

I'm glad you are looking after baby pan but please don't ignore big pan, big pan needs love and care too.

DebHagland · 05/10/2021 09:05

I am still mourning the loss of the most wonderful frying pan that my mum threw out when I was a teenager because it was "scruffy and burnt", it made the best paper thin crepes ever and never stuck.

Yesitsbess · 05/10/2021 10:17

@Mamanyt I was going to ask if it had a name! How lovely.

I'm off to work and then I'm going to assess the state of big pan...

Rub it with oil and put it in the oven or on the hot plate. Do not throw it away.
