To feel "posh"

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

@FuckingHateRats

I regularly take my these kids into a bookshop, buy us all a new book and then decamp in the nearest coffee shop for hot drinks and cake, and to read our new books.

My mum thinks this is the epitome of extravagance 🤣🤣

I am so doing this next week with DD. Genius!
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/07/2021 21:52

@Hdhdjejdj

I agree with the pp who mentioned the towel hoodies. They felt like the kind of thing a posh and organised mum would have her dc wear.
My mum made my DD one out of an old white towel. It had a somewhat peaked hood. DD looked like she was in the Junior branch of the KKK...
goldpendant · 22/07/2021 21:53

Oooh yes, so many things.... that are probably quite normal but felt posh at the time.

Towelling shorts from Boden
Snurk duvet covers
Camelbak water bottles
Helly Hansen rain coats (reduced on brand alley)

I felt posh when I gave up my first class plane ticket and hired a private jet instead to go to a 10 star hotel in Barbados.
Sigh!

wink1970 · 22/07/2021 21:53

Brilliant idea OP, as long as you don’t nurse the coffee for 3 hours: even Costa needs turnover, but especially independents.

Posh for me = the day I routinely bought from Waitrose and M&S, sadly no or not many independent shops round here.

Should have put on the non-posh towelling shorts cos I have pissed myself laughing at this 😂

When my DD was gifted a silver cross dolls pram I felt very posh walking around the park with her and enjoyed these trips more than she did.

I always feel quite posh when I take my dc on trips to castles/museums Grin

When I was pregnant one of my clients gave me a huge bag of baby clothes. Turned out they were all gorgeous French brands (Petit Bateau and similar). My baby looked so adorable in them I’ve ended up 4 years later completely addicted to buying beautiful children’s clothes on ebay (for less than what cheaper brands cost new, to be fair).

My siblings and I were all dressed exclusively by Oxfam, passed down between 4 of us 😳 (my mum does love my son’s clothes though!)

Hamster33 · 22/07/2021 21:57

I felt posh tonight, I got a Thai meal box thing from ma nd s for a tenner... but then cooked extra rice to make it feed 4.
Just can’t spend without feeling guilty!

thefirstmrsrochester · 22/07/2021 21:57

DH and I bought oysters and champagne when we were driving yesterday. Shucked them at the most beatific of lochs, him with Tabasco, me with lemon, and I guzzled the champagne as he was driving. All in cost less than £50 but I felt sparkly and special inside. And I brought some back for my darling neighbour so she could feel sparkly and special too.

Lemonmelonsun · 22/07/2021 21:57

Fucking hate rats 😍❤️ gorgeous idea.

MotherWol · 22/07/2021 21:57

When I had DD1, I bought a secondhand buggy - we were on a tight budget and I reasoned better a secondhand Bugaboo than a new cheap buggy that would need replacing. That buggy lasted until DD was nearly four, and I never quite got the smell of the previous owner’s perfume out of the upholstery.

DD2 has now arrived, and I’m in a much better financial position than I was with DD1. I’ve saved most of the baby stuff from the first time, but buying a new Bugaboo felt like saying I’m allowed nice things now, not just the cheapest things.

Sitting round the campfire meal, she asked the guide if they'd accidentally forgotten the red wine in the Bolognese because she couldn't taste any!! Her teacher was in stitches for similar reasons to your story.

Absolutely brilliant, love her!

Lemonmelonsun · 22/07/2021 21:58

Hamster that Thai box 😍, its wondeful!!,

Lemonmelonsun · 22/07/2021 22:01

Arghhhhhhh, mother wol, same with me and dd 2..

I didn't have any money to spend on dd1 and the one cute set of baby grows I got I stupidly shared with Mil, trying to include her and she rained all over my parade and was peculiar about it.

I was hoping for a new pram but didn't get one in the end however... I did indulge myself in getting her gorgeous clothes even if many were still second hand.... Lots of lovely pieces and no Mil to ruin it.

FogHornInTheAttic · 22/07/2021 22:01

I've bought Ds 7 a hugo Boss coat for his September start at primary.Fuck it.

StrangeToSee · 22/07/2021 22:01

I buy Polarn O. Pyret winter coats for my dc. It's a massive extravagance for me as I'm a single parent and get UC top up. I buy them with Klarna to spread the cost and the eldest dc's coat gets passed down to the youngest each year so only ever buy 1 at a time

PoP coats are lovely, although I like Molo too. A good quality coat can last forever years if taken care of, and holds its retail value. Although after losing a couple of expensive coats (one at nursery one at school) I’ve switched to secondhand PoP or cheap outdoor gear places like Trespass for jackets and summer coats.

I initially worried DC might be cold or the seams might leak but they’re still warm and dry, and the coats seem to cope with school playgrounds.

Definitely prefer Scandinavian brands for winter though. DD wears merino wool underlayers at school in winter, much cosier than cheap polyester thermals.

Knittingnanny · 22/07/2021 22:03

@SummerBreeze1980, where I live there was a shop in the 80’s ( might be still there) where they made and sold extravagant dresses for little girls and each one had a little brass jingle bell sewn somewhere inside. You were definitely posh if you could afford one! Not me, I had three boys and the cost of one dress from there would have clothed all of them in Ladybird clothes for a whole year.
I feel quite posh when I waft around the food hall in Marks and Spencer. A couple of times a year maybe.

Hdhdjejdj · 22/07/2021 22:03

Grin at the poor child wearing a white hood

Etinox · 22/07/2021 22:04

We scrub up well. We rarely do, but on occasion, when we have to, we can look great. It’s a lovely feeling looking at my tribe and thinking, ‘what a smart family!’

Mrsmadevans · 22/07/2021 22:05

I don't think Boden is posh TBH

Hdhdjejdj · 22/07/2021 22:05

Boden is posh to some people.
