To feel "posh"

leopardprintpants · 22/07/2021 19:48

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

@Knittingnanny

I’ve loved this thread! I wish my lovely old dad was still here, he would have loved hearing all these stories and no doubt added loads himself.

I really really want to go on a night train to Cornwall. It’s brought back a long forgotten childhood memory of a night train to Aviemore . My dad worked for British Rail and this must have been a perk of the job! Only time we went anywhere than Sandown or Weston super mare!

gogohm · 25/07/2021 10:17

@FuckingHateRats

I did this (bookshop had a coffee shop) and my mum thought we spoilt them too as they had so many books

peaceanddove · 25/07/2021 10:17

I've just added catching the night train to Cornwall to my Bucket List 😊

longwayoff · 25/07/2021 10:23

Love these trains. Friend lives in small country town that has preserved its station and not concrete and steeled it into modern oblivion. When I get the train from there into London (are u going to Town?) It feels very Enid Blyton/Agatha Christie. Lovely.

marthasmum · 25/07/2021 10:40

I’ve been on the night train to Cornwall! Lovely looking out at the passing scenery and I got a free cuppa and bacon sandwich which was an unexpected bonus. The night train to Cairo sounds amazing!
Agree re Agatha Christie type stations. In fact you’ve just made me realise why I love watching Agatha Christie on TV - it’s the element of old
fashioned posh
I agree, this is a lovely thread and is making me feel grateful for small luxuries that are personal to you.

doorornottodoor · 25/07/2021 11:07

Travelling first class on the train from Cairo to Luxor thirty years ago when I was 18. ❤️

doorornottodoor · 25/07/2021 11:09

I loved Agatha Christie, still do! Death on the Nile.

@Maggiesfarm are you the thread fun sponge? Confused You still don’t seem to get the light heated aspect of this thread!

Maggiesfarm · 25/07/2021 12:36

Oh sorry, I'll bow out. It was just that talking about night trains to and from Cornwall reminded me because, at that time, I was planning on doing that journey.

Not all the posts have been lighthearted - but no matter.

All over now. C U later.

doorornottodoor · 25/07/2021 12:39

Up to you @Maggiesfarm - it is a lovely thread in the main. A bit of gentle escapism. And I’m enjoying hearing all about everyone’s special moments. Those of their own and those they’ve shared with their children. ❤️

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 25/07/2021 12:56

Posh for me was being able to afford enough socks and underwear to last over a week. That was a while ago.

These days, it's dropping three figures on lunch for four, having parmesan cut from the wheel, and building a gaming PC because I'm 60 and fuckit.

RainbowCrayons · 25/07/2021 14:02

I got DS a toweling all in one outfit for this summer. It's only from Next and in the sale too but very cute and at 2 he probably won't want to be dressed up like that much longer.

Althoigh I'm not really an authority on 'posh'. As a teen I was reading a friend's copy of tatler and the cover model was covering up the L and my mum asked me if the magazine was called 'tater. To be honest tater magazine would probably be more me!

NordicBerry · 26/07/2021 10:59

I've just spent 2 weeks in Italy and having a cocktail delivered to my sunbed next to the roof top pool, whilst gazing at the glorious scenery of Lake Maggiore, seemed marvellously decadent. Especially after 18 months of looking at my back garden.

MrsMackesy · 26/07/2021 12:46

The greatest threat on the night train to Cornwall these days is being disturbed by the neighbours: 'Hugo, darling, we are trying to sleep. Do be a sweetie and don't poke Mummy and Daddy in the eye with the pole of your crabbing net'.

Oh God, actually I bet you're absolutely right. We were in Cornwall 2 weeks ago and there were a plethora of Hugos, Oscars and Cosmos.
Cam22 · 26/07/2021 13:48

This is fairly current (2018). It’s a list of what is unacceptable, according to Tatler:

Non–U:

Dietary requirements

The word ‘posh’

Public displays of abstinence

Mouthwash

Most white wine

Being friends with your parents

Facebook

Elaborate gin and tonics

Talking about yourself

Tissues

Jacob Rees-Mogg

British Airways

The South-East

France (except Paris)

Wearing make-up outside London

Dips

Trophy spouses

Windsor

Tinder

Social climbing

iPads

Cryogenic freezing

Supplements

Soho Farmhouse

Air freshener

Cortados

Fruit in plastic

Knowing about yachts

Three-day weddings in Burma

GreyhoundG1rl · 26/07/2021 13:56

What a random list. "Knowing about yachts", seriously?!

DeflatedGinDrinker · 26/07/2021 13:58

I persuaded teen to join the local sailing club as I thought it sounds good 😂 but it's not posh it's surprisingly reasonably priced.

toconclude · 26/07/2021 14:06

For the first time in my life I have spent more than 10k on buying a car. I'm 60.

pepsicolagirl · 26/07/2021 14:11

DS has a £40 towel. I could hear my ancestors voicing their disapproval as I made the purchase.

(no regrets)

Might not sound very posh to some but I grew up in a house where we would regularly be without electricity/gas between pay days.

Monday26July · 26/07/2021 14:27

I bought air con for my baby's room when he was 8m old. Cost £1500 for one small room. It's the only room in the house that has it! The house gets really hot and it was interfering with his sleep, and therefore ours. It was really stressful knowing the weather was heating up and that he would be hot and sweaty all night, what to dress him in in case it cooled down, would he sleep okay without a sleeping bag just in a vest...

Bought the air con, set his room to a steady 20 degrees and dress him the same as I do in the middle of winter. It's the biggest extravagance and I can't actually believe I'm a person who has air con in their toddler's bedroom. I know it's the height of luxury!

Oh yes. A couple of years ago we went to Lake Como and I felt like this lounging by the hotel's floating pool (on the lake). Even though the cocktail came from our all-inclusive hotel across the road, which was full of pensioners like us that we'd travelled over with on a National Holidays coach. Grin
