To feel "posh"

leopardprintpants · 22/07/2021 19:48

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

There are some wonderful posts on this thread and I pity the posters who don't get it.

@diddl

"I think you missed my point. They both go with salad. I buy mayo all the time now, and I know it isn't posh. But that first time, I felt posh, which is what this thread is about. Not what IS posh."

I'm not saying that one is posh & one isn't.

For me salad cream is for salad & mayo is for chips!

Ah! Now I understand Grin

The day I am invited to a royal wedding I will feel "posh".
I fear I might wait awhile though Grin

@Perky1

Fully robed chorister son suggesting salmon sandwiches for the the choir snack.
This reminds me of a wine tasting course I went to with a friend once. I'd met her at work and I didn't realise how genuinely posh she was. The course was run by a very grand wine merchants in the hall of a private school in Chelsea. Again super posh but I was very young and naive and the significance of all this passed me by. Every week we turned up and paid £5 and got absolutely legless while the yummy mummies of Chelsea delicately sipped and spat and then ordered huge quantities of wine.

On the last night the theme was wines to go with food and we were encouraged to bring in food to try with the wine. I bought an M&S prawn sanger and some ham. When I got there the Chelsea ladies had bought huge sharing platters of smoked salmon, poached salmonfruits de mer, a whole sliced fillet of beef, pates, bread olives, etc etc. For me the penny finally dropped and I realised how very grand this whole experience had been.

To be fair to the rich Chelsea ladies they were all lovely, very friendly and welcoming and eager to share. I ate and drank like a Queen that night and saved my M&S sandwich for lunch the next day.

Can't seem to get salad cream where I am so when I'm back in UK it's a treat!

Bet you never thought you'd hear that said about salad cream!

corkernewyorker · 24/07/2021 16:37

Just used up our last bottle. No plans to travel back to the UK anytime soon so I feel your pain @diddl

ZaraW · 24/07/2021 16:41

Of course no clothes are actually posh, the materials are all produced in the same way and using the cheapest labour and facilities no matter which brand you buy, often factories in China

Not true at all. I have clothes which are hand knitted in Ireland and Scotland from local sheep. Also have knitwear made in Italy, and dresses made in Japan all beautifully made.

I love to make organic sencha green tea in a pot and shopping in Selfridfes food hall.

“In a month (hopefully) we will be getting the night train to Cornwall as a treat, and I will feel posh. And I can't wait.”

Goodness just the name, “The Night Train to Cornwall” sounds special. How exciting for you all. In the context of our times it could just as well be The Orient Express!

ArabellaScott · 24/07/2021 21:15

once refused a cheese sarnie as he could see evidence of two kinds of cheddar

Quite right.

NCkitchen · 24/07/2021 21:20

@MySecretHistory

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)
I'll just drop this in...

Prince George was wearing Boden shorts for his 8th birthday 'official' photograph.

Sorry, I'm calling your bluff. His weren't towelling. (Unless you're double bluffing, and the shorts you bought weren't towelling)

I could tie myself in knots here with triple and quadruple bluffs Grin

Really?

I have some leopard print knickers in my drawer upstairs. Haven't worn them for years, I might now just for a treat.

Geraniumlemon · 24/07/2021 22:09

I’ve loved this thread so much. Posh for me is a day out in Manchester finishing with a wander round the perfume hall in Selfridges and a cup of tea at the cafe there. Other things would be using Deliveroo (we did this on holiday recently- we can’t get it in our village) it felt really exciting! Anything at all to do with Liberty’s fabric and secondhand cashmere. I recently found some gorgeous Boden fully lined wool trousers (secondhand) and I’m very much looking forward to feeling posh in them!

Bunnycat101 · 24/07/2021 22:41

There have been a few moments.

  1. at university doing formal meals. I’d gone to a crap state school and then put into this world of Harry Potter-esque dining with gowns. I thought it was amazing.

  2. when I moved from grad scheme to the next stage my salary went up significantly and I got myself a mulberry Bayswater to celebrate. I felt all swishy and like I belonged in the successful London crowd.

Knittingnanny · 24/07/2021 23:10

I’ve loved this thread! I wish my lovely old dad was still here, he would have loved hearing all these stories and no doubt added loads himself.

Anyone of breeding would forbear to mention this.

Night train to Cornwall just screams Famous Five to me, I hope its as wonderful as it sounds.

Maggiesfarm · 25/07/2021 07:08

Night train to Cornwall makes me think of a fire on a train with me in a sleeper carriage and the door not opening.

That happened to some unfortunate rail passengers when I was a teenager. It was on the news. I had been thinking of going to Cornwall, which I loved, on such a train, had always fancied a sleeper. I've never wanted to do it since.

I don't think I have ever felt 'posh', I'm just me.

Dizzyhedgehog · 25/07/2021 07:09

I do feel a bit posh when we are out for a bike ride with DS. He has a Woom bike and we've also got a FollowMe attached to my adult bike. Seems incredibly middle-class where we are. Not sure whether those are a thing in the UK.
Also makes me feel posh that I have to go and buy school uniform for him because he's at private school. No school uniforms at state schools here...(I work there, so we get a large fee reduction.)

Imissmoominmama · 25/07/2021 09:10

DH usually works at weekends, but one Saturday had a cancellation. I needed a dress for a charity ball that we were going to a few weeks later, so we went into Manchester with DD. DH treated me to a gown from Biba, plus another dress, and DD chose some clothes too. Then he took us downstairs to an Italian cafe where I had a glass of crisp dry white wine and a lobster risotto.

I felt proper posh that day- I usually get mine and DD’s clothes from charity shops (by choice- we love a good rummage Grin).

Me too, pp. I used to get the night train to Cairo some years ago and it felt rather Murder On The Orient Express! I loved it and wish one day to be able to do it again but with my family unlikely . Wishing you a lovely time @Genderwitched
